Samsung Mocks The iPhone And Its Fans In New Galaxy S II Ad

While Samsung itself is quick to take Apple’s innovation and pass it off as its own, resulting in a number of lawsuits, the Korean electronics giant is still happy to mock the device that inspires many of its Android-powered smartphones. In a new TV commercial for its popular Galaxy S II handset, Samsung pokes fun at the iPhone and its devoted fans who wait in line for hours to pick up the device on launch day.

I think someone’s a little jealous that they don’t see endless queues when they churn out a new product.

To be fair to Samsung, it is rather humorous. My favorite bit: “You know, if it looks the same, how will people know I upgraded?”

While i guess this add is great, but why not make it on the Galaxy Nexus? Surely they should be trying to promote their new phone rather then the old one! Shouldn’t they?

  • aidan taylor

    love it.

  • aidan taylor

    nexus is google.

  • KillianBell

Well, the Galaxy Nexus isn’t a Galaxy S II successor, so it won’t replace it. Although we’ll see Galaxy Nexus ads, it still needs to sell the Galaxy S II.

  • KillianBell

But the device is made by Samsung.

  • Twistedcerebrum

The Point Is..They Still Needed An iPhone To Create A Noticeable Ad…

  • Jabjabs Lefonte

While them using the iPhone to push their product is a little weak, I do appreciate the effort they put in. It’s not a horrible ad to be sure just a little shallow in their concept.

  • Ed_Kel

The entire commercial is based around the iPhone. Not one reference was made to the features or OS; probably because they know that their latest and greatest is still an Android P.O.S. and the only way they can turn a profit is to mock iPhone users.

  • Radiopearl

The nexus is only running google software..They didn’t make the phone.

  • Howie Isaacks

It’s funny to poke a little fun at obsessed iPhone/Apple fans (I’m one also), but what did this commercial say about what the new Samsung phone actually does?  None of the Android phone ads ever really state what you can do with it.  The iPhone ads do show what you can do with the phone.  What this commercial really shows is that Samsung is jealous of the intense enthusiasm that Apple customers have.

  • techgeek01

I believe Google helps design the phone as well and chooses what components as well.

  • gola99

I don’t get what the fuss is about this ad, it just looks cool meh…

  • David M

I feel embarrassed for them watching these ads, and even more so when they’re presenting their new products.

  • gareth edwards

approx 35 seconds in and the phone has the Mac OSX space desktop wallpaper – how telling. Once again Samsung is cutting it’s new, brave and individual designs into the market. The shame, the shame.

  • Andy Mayce

Yeah, it’s at 0:40. If you put the video in 1080p you realize it’s basically Leopard’s Aurora wallpaper but sideways. Creative.

  • Stephen Yuwono

samsung release s2 back in summer right? they release another new replacement phone already?

  • Grahas

The iPhone 4 and 4S look different not the same, and both the 4S and the Galaxy S 2 are NOT 4G, lastly the pixel density is shit on the Galaxy S  2

  • csman

    “I don’t buy Samsung, I’m creative”
    “Dude, you’re a barista.” :D

  • Kamuro

As Gruber said, the Mac vs. PC spots made fun of the PC, not the people using it, this spot makes fun of the people using iPhones, not the iPhone itself. So it’s not working that well. Nevertheless, the phone looks good, but why the S II and not the Nexus?

  • Joches

Now BIRDS are shooting to GUNS…

  • Keith

but isn’t the S II running on google software as well? um. i’m confused.

  • Ed Kim

“I think someone’s a little jealous that they don’t see endless queues when they churn out a new product.”

Yeah, but Samsung also does not have worldwide specialty shops (Apple stores) either.

  • SapirKraus

So what samsung is saying that apple has a huge line when they launch new products, while samsung people stand in the middle of no where and watch them wait?

  • Theyseeyoutrollin

Samsung’s philosophy: make fun of Apple, then copy everything.

  • gareth edwards

is it really that noticeable? I watched it and it just made me think about Apple not Samsung – own goal springs to mind.

  • Asda

It has a bigger screen… in fact it is so big that you can’t use one hand to operate the phone…

so I still prefer the iPhone screen size.

  • GregsTechBlog

It makes a splash and will get people talking about their phones, so it’s a good commercial in that aspect.

The iPhone is still a better phone, and the screen size of the iPhone is perfect.

  • Al

OMG I wish my iPhone was too big to comfortably use with one hand, heavier, with a poorer battery life and a messy OS which is susceptible to viruses.

What a mistake I made! Why oh why did I waste my money on an iPhone when I could have had one of these trendy Samsungs?

I feel like such a fool.

  • Hampus

the nexus is a google experience phone (which is what the nexus name indicates), that is, it’s running pure Android (in this case 4.0 Icecream Sandwhich) without any of the custom launchers and what not that manufacturers often put on their devices.

  • Guest

Funny, I thought it was an ad in favor of Apple. Samsung, what the heck are you doing?

  • nthnm

The commercial is humourous. I personally don’t like Samsung Android devices though (others are alright).

  • nthnm

How do the 4 and 4s look different? They are identical on the outside. This commercial isn’t claiming the 4s is a 4G phone, it’s stating that it isn’t, while the Galaxy is (if you happen to live within on of the few cities that has an LTE network).

  • Michael Curry

    Well
it is obvious that Samsung started this just prior to the holiday shopping
frenzy, iPhone has overall consideration rate within consumers and is gaining market
share within the business enterprise. In our company alone they replaced every
single highly expensive business telephone with a iPhone docked into a ifusion
smart station running Cisco mobile app. I now have one devise for all my
personal and business communications needs. They told us all the power saving
alone in one year from the old desk phone paid for the entire project. Nobody
at this point can come close to this however please try for us consumers really
enjoy all the new and innovated products developed from the spirit of competition.

  • Eric

They forgot to say it’s big, meaning bulkier in your pocket.  Screen quality doesn’t compare to Retina display, camera is shite, dodgy OS, and 4G…well it may be faster…faster in sucking your battery dry.  lol  Samsung is “trying” though.  But that’s like someone trying to kick a big ass boulder to move.  They just end up looking stupid trying to.  Or a better analogy…Wyle E. Coyote vs The Road Runner.  Nuf said.  Hahaha.

  • Warren

I don’t see how this commercial could sway consumers.. 4G doesn’t even exist in NA, though these android-based companies keep on saying it does. And also it has a “larger screen” big woop, all that means is you’ll be talking with a pancake on the side of you face.

  • Warren

    Your**

  • RandyG

Judging by all the ruffled feathers around here, the add did exactly what Samsung wanted. iPhone owners are so protective of their phones it’s hilarious.. and and so pitiful.
Keep winding them up Samsung! *thumbs up*

It’s a similar image, but not the same image, apple does not own all photos of space or does it have an exclusive right to use them. The creativity is in how they succeeded in agitating apple fanboys with such a small thing.

  • sir1jaguar

I own apple products like iPad 2, MacBook pro, iMac, apple tv and iPod touch 4 for my kids BUT our smartphones – 4 lines are all android now…

We convert from iPhone 4 to REZOUND and droid razr and it’s way better, then myself I’m still buying the galaxy nexus…

The truth is, every component used by SAMSUNG, motorola, htc for their latest 4g phones are superior than iPhone now… Even the iOS 5 has lots of bugs (problems) and if you compare to the gingerbread of android is still lagging behind, how much more to the coming ice cream SANDWHICH….

We download the ESPIER on REZOUND and RAZR and were shocked, it’s like iOS UI and it has more feature and the phones has NO LAG AT ALL… Because ESPIER is like iOS that is boring UI with floating square thing in the screen, so those dual core processor can open and run tue system so smooth…

I hope APPLE will wake up… They should invent a new feature that NEVER copied, stole and bought from other real inventor of technology…

  • sir1jaguar

    Istupid,

I don’t want to reply to you BUT when you said the camera is shite, I was like – ARE YOU THAT STUPID?

My cousin is manager in one store in Houston for AT&T and he chose the samsung galaxy s2 over the iPhone 4s…

They did the unscientific test by taking a photo same time using his phone (SAMSUNG)) then his coworker iPhone 4s… After that they print the picture they took and showed to people (customer) and guess what, the picture shot from SAMSUNG galaxy s2 is more crisper looking and the color is so alive…

So please, don’t defend iPhone if you just watched biased YouTube video and very unfair reviews from tech sites that we know been paid by APPLE…

iPhone 4s is good but not great anymore as there more better smartphone now in the market…

  • aesopus

    samsung…. same song

  • gareth edwards

I think the point is that Samsung, once again are proving that, whilst they make good kit, they are spending energy trying to sell their kit in the wrong way. The majority of Apple users always wanted and Apple phone and now we have one it’s just another bit of Apple kit that we are glad to have – preaching to these people is a waste of time and energy.  Doing it in the way they do at the mo just hardens people’s resolve about Samsung.

I never had an axe to grind against them but the way they are goin’ about stuff at the mo makes me dislike them a lot (mainly because I’m a designer and I think what they are doing is on the verge of plain old theft).

The creativity you talk about doesn’t exist (we can all point to lots of recent posts across the web that supports this). This is not creative, this is desperate. Creative would be coming up with a way of selling their kit that is both memorable and iconic. This is how great brands are born. You take the heart and soul of a product and you inflate it, polish it, focus and distil it so that what you present is all good, witty, insightful, whimsical or whatever is required to get the message across and make it stick like glue.

But, what you don’t do (and it’s what Samsung is doing) is pollute, your own brand, dilute it and make it look like it’s fighting against somtheing. Samsung should employ some good copy writers, a bunch of good art directors and let them decide how to sell ‘Samsung’ not the Samsung vs Apple war. My point again, the most memorable aspect of the ad is Apple, not Samsung. They only succeeded in making fanbois get their knickers in a twist and we all know the money is in the big market, not here in nerd land. Agitated? Meh. Converted to Samsung? Nope. FAIL.

  • RangyG

So the same must apply to the I’m a mac, and I’m a pc adds. I’m not going to argue that samsung takes cues from apple – everyone does, the same as apple taking cues from others (dont know why samsung is the only one that gets all the attention).
I can understand that as an apple owner you may not agree with that add. I thought it was funny, and the points were valid, the consumer will decide on their own.
End of the day, it’s a wallpaper, it’s not even the same, it has nothing to do with the OS or the phone.

  • baby_Twitty

do u like to eat troll-tarts?

  • gareth edwards

I agree, it would if it not for the ‘I’m a Mac’ ads being so well made.  It’s not about being an Apple user, it’s about being a picky designer. I just think that Samsung are missing the boat by a country mile in how they promote themselves. Like I say, they make wicked equipment, the ads should be great ads that build the Samsung brand.

  • Samantha Watson

I’d rather bite my own arm off than own a Samsung phone

  • Rudy Aunk

Hetep and Respect, I offer my condolences to those who have burnt their money on the Iphone clone known as the Samsung brick.

Those who can not make the best phone, make bad commercials in front of the best phone store, lol. Too funny.

  • Enriko Lucas Menzies

I think it speaks volumes when Samsung’s attitude in this ad is, “If you own an iPhone and not a GSII, you’re an idiot and you always will be.”

While all platforms/devices have their downsides, the Galaxy SII is a very capable phone and Android is a powerful OS. The ad, however, spends little to no time pushing what the phone can actually do. Granted, trying to market them together in one ad might be dodgy due to Android’s fragmented nature, but even the phone itself isn’t hard to sell.

Instead with this ad they’ve done nothing but alienate potential customers and give even more attention to their competitors. Ads like this just cement the idea that Apple is the company to beat, whether or not that’s true.

Not that Apple hasn’t been guilty of this, and I’m glad to see the “Mac vs. PC” and “If you don’t have an iPhone…” ads finally die out.

  • Rehan Ahmed

You are right on that part but surely people will now prefer the Galaxy Nexus with its brilliant 4.65 SUPER AMOLED SCREEN, NFC, Facial Unlock and much more.

At least that is what I would do..! What is your opinion?

  • Rehan Ahmed

Hey bro, don’t loose your heart on that one! The iPhone is great in its own respects, and i think that you would have been saying the same thing if you had taken the Galaxy S II. While both platforms or phones are good, both have their own flaws in them.
