At yesterday’s press conference, Apple made a big deal about how you could tether your new iPad to your laptop or other device, “if your carrier supports Personal Hotspot.”
Hey, guys, guess which of the two big U.S. carriers won’t support Personal Hotspot on the new iPad? Yup, the usual bastard: AT&T. But Verizon seemingly will. That means that if you’re an AT&T customer. there’s no way to tether your laptop to your iPad’s blistering LTE speeds… short, of course, of an A5X jailbreak.
The new iPad comes equipped with LTE 4G networking on AT&T and Verizon in the United States, and data plan prices for the nation’s largest carriers can now be compared. As you can see, AT&T offers the cheapest option with a $15/month for 250MB option.
Like always, these iPad data plans can be purchased month-to-month on either AT&T or Verizon with no long-term commitment. The new iPad offers Personal Hotspot for creating a WiFi network out of your 4G connection. LTE 4G will get you up to 72Mbps when available, but the iPad also supports HSPDA 3G for speeds up to 42MBps. Regular 3G will be used when nothing else is available.
Only half an hour now until the iPad 3 is unveiled, but a last minute leak says it’s definitely shipping with LTE. This is the iPad now showing up in Apple’s own inventory system:

While 4G LTE connectivity for the iPad 3 seemed unlikely just a few weeks ago, recents rumors have said that the super speedy mobile internet technology will indeed be making its debut in Apple’s new tablet. The latest report comes from The Wall Street Journal, which confirms the device be joining Verizon’s LTE network.
Remember when we told you earlier today that Verizon was teasing something new and mysterious on the front page of its website? Well, it turns out that AT&T is doing exactly the same thing. If you visit att.com right now, you’ll see the above banner.

It’s looking more and more likely that the iPad 3 won’t just be getting a Retina Display tomorrow, it’ll be getting LTE. The Verge’s Joshua Topolsky is now reporting that their sources indicate LTE iPad 3s will ship in two flavors for both AT&T and Verizon’s network.
If you go to Verizon Wireless‘s front page right now, they are hyping the imminent launch of something, which we can only assume is iPad 3 related.
But what is it? An iPad 3 with LTE is obviously a big contender, but I wonder if it could be something less splashy but just as important overall, like shared data plans.

iMore, the same site that correctly predicted the date of Apple’s iPad event on March 7th, has now said that the iPad 3 will “definitely” have LTE 4G. The Wall Street Journal previously predicted this feature with no indication of whether the speed improvements will make their way to the iPhone 5.
There’s also been no indication of whether 4G speeds on the iPad will be available outside of the United States.
