An earlier unconfirmed report indicated that this fall’s LCD iPhone will be the company’s last. That’s perhaps not surprising. given that OLED displays are superior in several ways

Samsung says it has developed a new “unbreakable” OLED display, which could be used for everything from smartphones to “military devices” (so you know it’s tough!). The rugged plastic panel can withstand repeated drops and extreme temperatures, the company says.

Having previously been the exclusive OLED panel provider for the iPhone X, Samsung now faces increasing competition from other companies that want a piece of the Apple pie. But the South Korean tech giant is fighting back!

Last year, only Apple’s OLED iPhone X was the recipient of the edge-to-edge infinite display. Owners of the regular iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, meanwhile, had to endure the indignity of the old fashioned iPhone design, complete with bezel.

That appears set to change with the 2018-era iPhone refresh, however. And a new report reveals the technology that will make it all possible.

The latest compares this upcoming model with the iPhone X. The two look similar, except for the larger display on the 2018 iPhone.

Apple is reportedly set to add another OLED display producer for the iPhone, helping Apple reduce its reliance on current OLED manufacturer Samsung.

For extra displays, Apple will turn to South Korean company LG Display, which will initially supply between 2-4 million screens. While this is a small number by Apple’s standards, it will work to ramp up its capacity to produce more in the future.

Samsung has joined the chorus of voices complaining about weak iPhone X sales, citing the “slow demand for flexible OLED panels” in its earnings report as one of the reasons for its performance in the past financial quarter.

Although the display making part of Samsung’s business experienced 3.4 percent increased sales over the three month period, this was less than the 20 percent growth of Samsung in its entirety.

Apple’s decision to slash iPhone X production has reportedly left Samsung looking for new customers to sell its OLED panels to.

Samsung ramped up production capacity in order to meet Apple’s demands, only to find itself sitting on excess production capacity now that Apple has reduced its iPhone X orders. While Samsung hopes to sell OLED displays to other manufacturers, many have been slow to adopt the technology due to the expense of changing from LCD screens.

However, only three of these are likely to ship to users. The question, therefore, is which three.
