Phil Schiller says iPhone X will dictate the direction of smartphones for the next decade.

Apple marketing guru Phil Schiller has heard the haters saying the iPhone X wasn’t the first smartphone to get facial recognition. But according to Schiller, that doesn’t matter at all.

“They all stink,” says Schiller in a new interview discussing Apple’s new facial recognition feature. The wide-ranging interview touches on everything from AirPods to virtual reality, but what sets Face ID apart is what got Schiller the most excited.

Why Face ID may never support multiple users

Face ID on iPhone X was designed to be operated by just one user, and that’s not going to change anytime soon.

Apple’s Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, says there are no plans to add multi-user support.

Apple’s latest series of videos are out to show fans why they should consider ditching Touch ID for Face ID.

With the new True Depth camera on the iPhone X, Apple’s magical software can unlock your iPhone just by looking at your face. In four new videos published on the company’s YouTube, Apple shows how Face Id can be used to bring your favorite animoji to life and more.

Watch all four right here:

Quick Tip: How to force Face ID to pay attention to you

Face ID is almost perfect, but that only makes it even more annoying when Apple’s facial-recognition tech doesn’t work like you’d expect. For instance, if you’re sitting at your desk and you glance at a notification on your propped-up iPhone X, the screen unlocks and lets you read the notification’s full content. But sometimes it doesn’t notice you looking, and the notifications stay locked.

What do you do in this case? Do you grab the phone and give it a shake, the same way you do to trigger raise-to-wake on other iPhones? No. There’s a shortcut, although you will need to lift at least one finger to use it.

Why the iPhone X needs its notch

The "notch" is not a problem.

Ever since Apple unveiled the iPhone X, naysayers have been complaining about “the notch.” But in today’s video, I’m going to do my best to convince you that the controversial cutout at the top of the iPhone X screen is totally not an issue.

Here’s why I think the iPhone X actually needs the notch.

Anyone that says Apple can’t innovate anymore obviously hasn’t spent some quality time with the iPhone X.

According to Time’s annual list of the year’s best inventions, the iPhone X is the only smartphone that makes the cut — but so did the fidget spinner. The magazine calls the iPhone X the world’s most sophisticated smartphone and it’s not hard to see why.

Killing the home button on the iPhone X was a no-brainer, according to Apple’s design boss Jony Ive. But figuring out the best way to replace wasn’t an easy task.

In a recent interview on iPhone X, Jony Ive revealed some of the design decisions his team had to make in order to bring huge innovations to this year’s flagship device.

Face ID is, by most accounts, an amazing technology. You pretty much set it and forget it, and the iPhone X just unlocks itself whenever you look at it.

But what if you’re too lazy to point your eyes and your face at your iPhone whenever you want to look at it? What if you prefer to give it a sidelong glance, to show it who’s boss? Then you can disable attention awareness, which speeds up the Face ID process and unlocks your iPhone X faster.

The iPad Pro is set to get a huge processor upgrade in 2018, based on the latest rumor out of Apple’s supply chain in Asia.

Apple supposedly plans to slap an octa-core processor in next year’s iPad Pro, making them the most powerful tablets Apple’s ever made. The chip will allegedly be manufactured by TSMC and will pack a few features the A11 chip on the iPhone X doesn’t have.

Cousins trick Face ID into thinking that they’re the same person

Apple has touted the security of Face ID, but there have been a couple of exceptions to the rule.

There have already been multiple reports of close family members being able to successfully unlock each other’s iPhone X using Face ID.

After publishing a story yesterday on a kid who managed to unlock his mom’s handset, however, we heard from another pair of individuals. The difference? That this time they are not mother and son, or siblings, but “very distant” third cousins. (Although it’s still not an issue you should worry about.)

Check out the video below.

Another way to circumvent the iPhone X’s Face ID security system has been discovered — but, don’t worry, it’s not going to be one that affects the overwhelming majority of users.

The Face ID “hacker” in question is the fifth-grade son of an iPhone X owner, who apparently looks close enough to his mom in appearance that the system recognizes them both as the same person.

Hackers may have already proven that Face ID isn’t quite as secure as secure as Apple claims.

Using a simple 3D printed mask, Vietnamese security firm Bkav, has posted a video showing an iPhone X being unlocked after unveiling a composite 3D-printed mask made of plastic, makeup, silicone and paper cutouts for some facial features.

What do you do when Face ID doesn’t recognize your face? Do you reposition your face? Reposition the iPhone? Stare a little harder at the camera, to tell it you really mean business?

Stop! Instead of acquiescing to your iPhone X’s silent demands, you should use this as a teaching moment (and show your phone who’s boss at the same time). Face ID learns how your face changes over time, but you can also teach it to recognize you better. Here’s how.

The iPhone X hasn’t even been out for a week but this new concept has got us lusting to upgrade already.

Mockup artist Martin Hajek has created an all-new concept of what the Plus-sized iPhone could look like in 2018 if Apple brings its edge-to-edge display to the larger device and it looks absolutely amazing.

Now that the iPhone X is out and into the hands of customers, developers are eager to roll out new app updates, taking advantage of the handset’s new TrueDepth camera system.

One of the first is glasses manufacturer Warby Parker, which is already employing the Face ID facial mapping data feature to make suggestions about which glasses would suit people’s face shape.

iPhone X review: Apple’s finest smartphone ever

Don't worry about burn-in on your iPhone X.

Smartphones are changing, and every manufacturer possesses its own take on what the future should look like. Apple’s vision is the iPhone X, which arrives 10 years after the original with big changes and an even bigger price tag.

For iPhone X, Apple did away with aluminum unibodies, chunky bezels, Touch ID and the beloved Home button. In their place, iPhone X sports polished stainless steel and smooth glass, an edge-to-edge Super Retina HD display, and Face ID.

The result proves stunning. Apple just made the iPhone exciting again. But is iPhone X worth $999?

We finally have our hands on iPhone X and we couldn’t be more excited. I haven’t put mine down since it arrived at my door this morning, and while it’s too early to give you our full review, we are offering our first impressions.

Here’s what we think of the smartphone of the future so far, along with our iPhone X unboxing video.

iPhone X keeps your notifications secret from people who aren’t you

Thanks to Face ID, the iPhone X knows when its owner is looking at it, and can hide the content of your notifications until you do so. Now, if somebody else picks up your iPhone X and takes a peek at your incoming alerts, it will only see a list of the apps that have notifications for you. The content of the alerts remains hidden until you look at the screen, and Face ID expands the boxes to show you your messages.

The twist is that you can already do something very similar with Touch ID, just by changing one setting.

Using Apple Pay on the iPhone X is a little different than using it on the iPhone 8 and earlier. That’s because Apple Pay on older iPhones uses both the home button, and Touch ID, neither of which feature on the iPhone X. So how do you make an Apple Pay purchase with your new iPhone? It’s easy. Here’s how.
