HackCentre Lets You Pointlessly Hack Your Game Centre Scores [Updated]

By

cult_logo_featured_image_missing_default1920x1080

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBvfa4JX3Tw&feature=player_embedded

A new application called HackCentre which allows a user upload any score they want to Game Centre is making its way to the Cydia store. The application supports every Game Centre compatible game available, and is demonstrated in the video above using the popular Fruit Ninja slicing game.

You will, of course, need a jailbroken device to take advantage of this application.

Personally, I really don’t see the point in HackCentre. Whether your device is jailbroken or not, the application takes a lot of the fun out of Game Centre and is only going to discourage people from using the gaming network. If you enjoy trying to beat global high scores and getting your name on the online leaderboards, you’ve got no chance now that hackers can upload any score they want at the touch of a button.

And if you do choose to take advantage of HackCentre and upload your score, surely the novelty wears off when you’ve finished uploading the highest possible score you can for every Game Centre compatible app you own?

I’ll be looking forward to an Apple fix for this one.

UPDATE: It seems my earlier rant about HackCentre was unnecessary, as the hacker behind application has announced on Twitter that he will no longer be releasing it due to the “overwhelmingly negative” response it has received.

CDMA iPad Also Coming to Verizon, Says CFO

By

Screen-shot-2011-01-11-at-22.05.231.png

According to Verizon Wireless CFO Francis Shammo, it’s not just the iPhone 4 that’s going CDMA and joining Verizon. In an interview with Bloomberg, Shammo declared that a CDMA iPad, which connects directly to the Verizon network without the need for the carrier’s MiFi device, will be available in the future.

Shammo did not give any details on when the device might be available, how much it might cost, or whether it would use the network’s 4G service over LTE, however.

Although the iPad has been sold through the Verizon website for some time, it’s the Wi-Fi only model bundled with the carrier’s MiFi hotspot device, which is required to connect to the Verizon network. Some may argue that the benefit of having the MiFi device is that you can connect multiple devices and share the data connection, however, it’s possible the CDMA iPhone’s new ‘Personal Hotspot’ feature in iOS 4.2.5 could also be introduced to the CDMA iPad.

The announcement delivers another blow to AT&T, who currently have iPhone exclusivity until the device is also made available through Verizon in February.

AT&T iPhone 4 vs. Verizon iPhone 4: What’s the Difference?

By

Screen-shot-2011-01-11-at-21.37.272.png

Just like AT&T’s iPhone 4, the Verizon iPhone 4 will feature a Retina display, a front-facing camera, an Apple A4 chip, and HD video recording. Other than the CDMA chip in the Verizon device and the redesigned antenna, the hardware is exactly the same. So, how do you choose the best device for you?

We’ve created a handy comparison chart that will help you identify the difference between the two options. If you’re looking to purchase Apple’s latest iPhone, the chart below will help you choose the best carrier for your device based on price, data allowances, and additional features exclusive to each. By

Screen-shot-2011-01-09-at-13.50.19-e12945810995301.png

Now that the festive period is out of the way and we begin to settle in to the new year, Apple has returned to reviewing App Store submissions and games and apps are starting to trickle in again. Here’s our pick of the best iOS apps to enter the App Store over the past week.

8mm Vintage Camera is a great new video application that shoots old-fashioned 8mm movies in real-time. It was recently reviewed by the Cult’s own David Martin, who was very impressed with the app’s effects and awarded it 4 out of 5 stars.

Trimensional is a ground-breaking photography app and the world’s first 3D scanner for the iPhone. It cleverly uses both the screen and the front-facing camera on your device, detecting patterns of light reflected off your face to create a true 3D model. The results are extraordinary and you can check out some screenshots after the break.

If you’ve made any New Year’s resolutions for 2011, Zendre for your iPhone is the app you need to keep track of your goals and achievements. Reward yourself progress points every time you do something towards meeting your resolution, and get the motivation you need to keep your resolutions going.

Now that the festive period is out of the way and we begin to settle in to the new year, Apple has returned to reviewing App Store submissions and games and apps are starting to trickle in again. Here’s our pick of the best iOS games to enter the App Store over the past week.

Grimm is the first I’ve discovered, and probably the first you’ll play, in which your aim is to navigate a lost baby’s carriage and successfully deliver the child home to its mother. This side-scrolling adventure is set in a dark and stylized world and delivers something a little different that iOS gamers are sure to love.

Block Rogue claims to be the biggest mobile puzzle adventure ever made, and the game in which each solution brings you one step closer to the truth. Problem-solvers will love the hundreds of mind-bending puzzles and dark mysteries that Block Rogue has to offer.

The latest highly addictive iPhone game features a big, colorful elephant named Clumsy Bob, who’s about to set off on an adventure around the world. Bounce Bob across the vibrant cartoon environments as far as you can for your highest score, then challenge your friends to beat it.

New iTunes Movie Features Let You Search Film Scripts, Share Scenes With Friends

By

Screen-shot-2011-01-03-at-22.22.10-e12940933747601.png

New features have quietly been introduced to iTunes movies that allow users to search for specific words within a film’s script, and select their favorite clips to share with their friends through social networking sites. The features are being “quietly tested” in recent movies released by Sony Entertainment Pictures, as noted by PaidContent.org.

The movies that are known to include the new features at present are “The Other Guys,” which provides users with a search button enabling them to enter words to be found within the film’s script; and both “Salt” and “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” which include the “clip & share” function that allows users to select their favorite scenes and then share them with their friends through social networking sites. Users also have access to a playlist of songs from the movie and an opportunity to purchase them from iTunes.

The introduction of these new, iTunes-only features gives movie fans an incentive to purchase the latest films through Apple’s iTunes Store, rather than on DVD or Blu-ray. According to PaidContent.org, the capabilities found in the latest Sony movies are unique to iTunes, and not just a repackaging of additional content available on the Blu-ray or DVD counterparts:

“Mind-blowing add-ons? No, but they do represent the intent of studios like Sony, which declined comment, to offer differentiating value on digital platforms from that on DVD, where extras are often nothing more than a collection of additional short videos.”

These new features are only accessible to users who choose to purchase movies from iTunes, rather than rent them.

App Store Promo Codes Now Work Worldwide

By

post-72372-image-136bf768321d000be9c256e28250a2ca-jpg

Until today, App Store promo codes were only redeemable in the U.S. iTunes Store, meaning those of us in other countries and without a U.S. iTunes account were unable to take advantage of promo code distributions and giveaways.

Apple has now made developers aware that promo codes are no longer limited to U.S. customers, and that they can now be redeemed in any App Store.

Your promo code distribution is no longer limited to U.S. customers. Promo codes in iTunes Connect can now be redeemed by all App Store customers worldwide. Your Team Agent can request 50 codes per version of your app in iTunes Connect and your customers can redeem these codes in any App Store. To learn more about requesting promo codes in iTunes Connect, see the iTunes Connect Developer Guide.

MobileMe to ‘Get a Lot Better’ Next Year, According to Steve Jobs

By

post-72292-image-e82da1e906a72ca43778104b8fdfeb51-jpg

In an email to a frustrated user, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed that the company’s MobileMe subscription service will improve in 2011. Jobs’ reply was a signature short response, but it promises a better service for the many disgruntled users who sign up to Apple’s email, hosting, and syncing service each year.

One MacRumors reader became so dissatisfied with the MobileMe service, that he emailed Jobs to let him know.

I love my iPad and iPhone4 and am a huge fan of yours and all that Apple does. I desperately want to stay inside of Apple’e ecosystem as much as possible.

However, MobileMe is making it very difficult for me to do so. Unreliable/unpredictable syncing, creating duplicate entries (sometimes scores of them), etc. It’s almost unusable.

And I know from forums (including Apple’s own support boards) that I am not the only one experiencing these very real and frustrating problems.

Please tell me it will get better, and soon?

Jobs’ reply was simply, “Yes, it will get a lot better in 2011.”

Unsurprisingly, Steve’s response doesn’t give away much for us to get excited about, other than the reassurance of a significantly enhanced MobileMe service next year. Whether that means improvements to existing MobileMe services, or the introduction of new features is unclear at this time.

The $99 yearly subscription service from Apple providers users with email, file/photo hosting, and syncing across all of their devices, including Macs, PCs, iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches.

Apple Seeds iOS 4.2.1 GM to Developers

By

post-70191-image-061ff105d55eb3d4c7b7927b6d24a42c-jpg

Apple has just released another gold master candidate of its long-awaited iOS 4.2 firmware to developers. This version is iOS 4.2.1, and we assume it quashes the Wi-Fi bug that’s recently been affecting the iPad.

MacRumors reports that Apple has instructed developers not to resubmit their applications under the new build, suggesting that only minor fixes are included in this update.

Unfortunately it’s not the iOS 4.2 news many of us have been anticipating, however, it’s nice to see Apple are fixing these bugs before they release the firmware to the public.

Developers can get their hands on iOS 4.2.1 via the iOS Dev Centre.
