Which Smartphone Grills Faster: iPhone, Android G2, HTC Surround?

By

post-69425-image-733ddf0ac5eee44eae84d544e2370504-jpg

Who cares which is faster, which has the best operating system, or how much they cost? What we’re all dying to know is which lasts longer on a disposable barbecue out of an iPhone 4, an Android G2, and an HTC Surround.

In a video supposedly designed to promote the EZGrill disposable barbecue, all three devices are cooked like digital smart-burgers in a bid to see which lasts longer.

Without spoiling it for you and giving too much away, the Android was the first to give in before the iPhone’s temperature error popped up leaving it in second place. Check out the charred remains in the video below.

The team behind OpeniBoot, which allows users to run the Android OS on the iPhone 3G, are now hard at work on porting the hack to the iPhone 4 and the iPad.

Jailbreak expert Hexxeh posted a video on his blog yesterday that shows OpeniBoot running on the iPad. There’s not much to see at this point, but the video’s below if you’d like to see it.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIixUYaLufo

This is a great step towards booting Android on Apple’s latest iOS devices, and it shouldn’t be too long before the hack is available for release.

If you have an iPhone 2G, 3G, or first-gen iPod Touch, and you’d like to try booting Android, it’s now even easier through Cydia – check out John’s recent post here.

Hasbro ‘My3D’ Goggles to Bring 3D Content to iPhone & iPod Touch

By

post-68446-image-c19baff320d2abd0acc7cf173b83987a-jpg

Toy manufacturer Hasbro is set to unveil a pair of $30 goggles called ‘My3D’ that will attach to an iPhone or iPod Touch and allow users to enjoy 3D content, according to a report from the Associated Press on Monday.

It promises three-dimensional content that offers a 360-degree experience in gaming, virtual travel experiences and entertainment content. It’s aimed at both children and adults.

The device, which resembles a pair of binoculars with a slot in which users insert their iPod or iPhone, will be priced at $30. It will be available starting next spring at stores where Apple’s iPhones and iPod Touches are available.

Hasbro, which is the nation’s second-largest toy maker, has teamed up with Dreamworks Animations, Discovery, Sony, and IMAX to provide 3D content which will be delivered through specialized apps for the devices. The A.P. report also claims Hasbro worked closely with Apple to develop the My3D device.

I’ve been looking forward to 3D content on iOS for a long while now, and Hasbro’s My3D looks set to be incredibly popular. With a list of reputable companies helping to develop content to accompany the device, it should certainly be top-notch, and that price-tag isn’t too bad either.

By

post-67869-image-b7a6555e135be54fcaadc5b3adf005a9-jpg

Apple has released the second update to its new iPhoto ’11 application today, and version 9.1 reintroduces support for creating photo calendars that had disappeared in the iPhoto ’11 release.

The update also provides additional letterpress themes for holiday greeting cards, and fixes several bugs.

This update adds several new print product options to iPhoto ’11. It also improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues.

  • Provides the ability to create and order calendars in iPhoto.
  • Additional letterpress holiday greeting card themes are now available.
  • Fixes an issue that prevented videos downloaded from MobileMe or Flickr from importing correctly into iPhoto events.

The update is recommended for all users of iPhoto ’11.

This is the second update to iPhoto ’11 since its release just over two weeks ago. Apple quickly released the 9.0.1 update last week to address an issue that caused many users to lose their iPhoto data when upgrading from iPhoto ’09.

The iPhoto 9.1 update weighs in at just over 186 MB and can be downloaded via Software Update on your Mac, or from Apple’s download page.

White iPhone Missing from Apple Online Store: Cancelation Imminent?

By

post-66807-image-aef108a4fe95742697653fd8e4cdef87-jpg

The screenshot above was just taken from the iPhone page of the Apple Online Store. Notice something missing? The elusive white iPhone that Apple keeps promising us has now been removed, fuelling rumors that the device has been canceled entirely.

The white iPhone was delayed for the third time earlier this week, with its released date being pushed back until next spring. The exact reason we’re yet to get our hands on the white device is still yet to be confirmed from Cupertino, with the company simply explaining it’s “more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected.”

Several reasons have been speculated, however, including a color mismatch between the device’s glass and home button, light leakage out of the iPhone, and – as Cult of Mac discovered – light leakage in to the device that causes problems when taking pictures.

So, has the time come for Apple to finally throw in the towel and admit that its white iPhone 4 will never hit the shelves? Are there even customers still waiting for the device, or have they just given up and just purchased its black counterpart?

We’d be interested to know if you’ve been holding out for the white iPhone 4, and how you’d feel about Apple cancelling the device – let us know it the comments!

iOS 4.2 For iPad Will Be Jailbreak-Ready On Release

By

post-66578-image-21eedc2778b4bb25cfe7717899b10960-jpg

When iOS 4.2 for iPad is released in November, jailbreakers won’t need to wait before they can have their way with their iPads.

iOS jailbreak expert, iH8sn0w, released some images today of a jailbroken iPad running the iOS 4.2 firmware. The image above shows an iPad running the MobileTerminal jailbreak application, that gives users access to the command line.

This is great news for those that like to jailbreak their devices, but it comes as little surprise to many who have expected the jailbreak release for several weeks since its announcement.

If you’ll be jailbreaking your iPad as soon as you’ve updated to the iOS 4.2 firmware, let us know what your reasons for jailbreaking are in the comments.

iSeeU Brings a Front-Facing Camera to Your iPhone 3GS… Sort Of

By

post-65763-image-74b00d42d8892c17e2338fbb5d1ee0dc-jpg

iSeeU is a new accessory from PLAYMASS for the iPhone 3GS that provides users with the functionality of a front-facing camera in a pretty novel way.

It’s a clip-on accessory with some carefully arranged mirrors that reflects what’s in front of your device in to the camera at the back, kind of creating a front-facing camera. Check out the video below to see how it works.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti8XI3X-eCA

Although the iPhone 3GS is not FaceTime compatible, there are video calling applications in the App Store that work perfectly on the older model, like Fring, Tango Video Calls and Yahoo! Messenger

iSeeU is now available to pre-order for $24.95 and will be launched in “early October.” A release date which I think may have been missed. It’s available in five colors and comes with a carrying case.

Jobs Confirms There Won’t Be An Option To Customize iPad Switch, Will Be Mute From iOS 4.2

By

post-65756-image-a961438f4cdefeedfb24e0124de9cd39-jpg

Steve Jobs is reported to have confirmed by email that the switch on the side of your iPad will forever be a mute switch from iOS 4.2 onwards, and that users won’t be given the option to change it back to an orientation lock.

When the iPad was first released, the switch on the side of the device was an orientation lock, and many users were very fond of this function. In the most recent iOS firmware, the function of the iPad’s switch has changed to enable users to quickly mute the device, just like they can on the iPhone.

One iPad user, named Robert, sent an email to Jobs himself to ask whether the iPad switch will always be a mute button from iOS 4.2:

“In IOS 4.2 for iPad is the switch on the side going to be the mute and not screen orientation lock from now on?”

Jobs replied with a simple “Yep.” and then Robert asked whether users might be given the option to customize the function of the switch:

“Are you planning to make that a changeable option?”

Jobs provided another simple reply: “Nope.”

So, your iPad switch will always be a mute button from iOS 4.2. As an iPad user myself, I have to say I’m a little disappointed that the switch has changed to a mute button – although it’s only a slight change, I felt the orientation lock was much more useful. Turning the iPad to silent was easy enough already in iOS 3.2.x by just holding down the volume button.

Qantas Airlines to Offer iPad for In-Flight Entertainment

By

post-64324-image-d5ac963bb84a66d3d35d1557e6193a13-jpg

Australian airliner, Qantas Airlines, is to begin offering the iPad for in-flight entertainment to travellers on its Jetstar flights.

Qantas have been testing the tablet device on its planes since back in June, and passengers had the opportunity to rent the tablet device for $10 (AUS). Following its success, the airliner is now ready to deploy the iPad across its Jetstar flights.

A spokesman for Jetstar told Dow Jones Newswires on Monday of their plan:

“We’re in the final stages of putting in place what would be a broader roll out across the network. We’re in ongoing discussion with the manufacturer around a more integrated network proposition.”

We’re unsure what an “integrated network” could mean at this point, but it seems that it might be a streaming service for music, movies, TV shows, and games, so that passengers can choose entertainment to suit them, rather than have to pick from what’s available on the device.
