iPhone 7 Plus owners can finally start using Apple’s highly-touted Portrait Mode starting today.

Apple released iOS 10.1 to the public this morning after weeks of beta testing the new Portrait Mode. The software update comes with a couple of other tweaks for iPhone and iPad as well as a number of bug fixes.

Portrait Mode

The iPhone 7 Plus launched on September 16 with limited availability at Apple stores. With a dual-lens camera on the back, the iPhone 7 Plus can mimick the blurring effect of DSLRs using computational photography. Apple advertised the new Portrait Mode feature at its September keynote, but didn’t turn the feature on until now.

Other improvements in iOS 10.1 include transit directions for Japan. The iPhone 7 is also the first Apple device with Sony’s tap-to-pay FeliCa chip that is used by millions on Japan’s subway system.

Apple also made some minor tweaks to the Messages app interface by adding a scroll bar to the bottom. Apple says the Portrait Mode is still in beta, so we expect some significant photo processing improvements are still on the way.
