New MacBook Airs could launch as soon as the end of Q3 2018, according to a new report out of Taiwan that signals the wait for an affordable new MacBook is nearly over.
Apple hasn’t updated the MacBook or MacBook Air since June of 2017, but with a new update on the horizon, it could bring a big boost to Apple’s market share.
Taiwanese analytics firm TrendForce wrote in its latest market report that Apple is set to release new MacBooks this quarter as it comes out of a transition period.
“The second quarter was the transition period when Apple was preparing for the releases of the upcoming new MacBook devices for the year. TrendForce therefore expects MacBook shipments to again post a large QoQ increase in 3Q18, as Apple will be releasing a new MacBook Pro at the start of the quarter and a new MacBook Air at the end of the quarter.”
New MacBook Pros referred to in TrendForce’s note were launched last month at the beginning of Q3. Other analytics have claimed that new entry-level MacBooks will pop up in either September or October.
TrendForce’s report notes how Apple slipped in the rankings of top laptop manufacturers. Asus shot up from sixth to the fourth spot, supplanting Apple. Meanwhile, HP, Lenovo and Dell continue to hold a strong grip on the top 3 spots.
