The Last Remnant Remastered, an updated version of Square Enix’s 2008 RPG for Xbox 360, has received a surprise release on iOS.

The game depicts a world divided into multiple city-states, inhabited by four different species. The player controls Rush Sykes, a human who is searching for his sister during a war between the different groups, who are battling over magical artifacts. It was developed by many of the team members who worked on the SaGa and Final Fantasy games.

Check out a teaser trailer below.

The Last Remnant Remastered received a mixed response a decade ago. There were issues with its graphics, and its battle system. The battle system is different to many RPGs, with players controlling multiple groups of characters instead of individual units.

Square Enix released its remastered version of the game for PlayStation 4 in December 2018 and for Nintendo Switch in June 2019. It received a 70% score on Metacritic. The main improvements seem to be graphical, making the game appealing to a new generation of gamers.

Sure, so this isn’t one of the biggest Square Enix games fans would line up for on iOS. But it’s still a welcome surprise. For all its criticisms, The Last Remnant has some really interesting ideas. The game world is stunningly beautiful, too.

If the concept appeals, you can check it out on the App Store here. The Last Remnant Remastered costs $19.99 with no in-app purchases. The game will consume around 3.9 GB of storage initially, but you’ll also have to download data inside the game.
