As part of its effort to get a jump on the competition when it comes to 5G networks, Verizon reportedly plans to offer a free 4K Apple TV to customers.
Verizon will be the first mobile carrier to offer 5G residential broadband service in the U.S. later this year, and it’s trying to lure subscribers in with a deal on Apple TV 4k plus discounted YouTube TV, which usually costs $40 per month.
Originally Verizon was pursuing its own original content as a way to take on rival AT&T which now owns Time Warner and HBO. Those plans have been abandoned in favor of striking up deals with content creators instead.
“We believe 5G will disrupt the entertainment industry further and are excited to provide our customers with the choice of the best network, the best content and the best partners,” Hans Vestberg, newly named CEO of Verizon, said in according to Variety.
Verizon’s 5g network will launch in 4 major markets to start out with: Sacramento, Los Angeles, Houston and Indianapolis. Pricing on the plans hasn’t been announced yet. The mobile 5G network is expected to launch in 2019.
Plans to go all-in on Apple TV and YouTube TV come after Verizon shutdown its Go90 free ad-supported TV service last month.
