How to escape those awkward iMessage group convos

You know how it is — you get invited to a multi-person chat via iMessage with people you sort of know and it gets all kinds of awkward and annoying as the group blows up your iPhone with a ton of messages you really don’t want to pay attention to.

What’s a popular girl or guy like you to do? There are a couple of ways to get out of those iMessage group conversations so you can finally relax.

First, you can leave the conversation itself, as long as the group has more than four people in it (besides you).

To do this, tap the Details button in the upper right of the Group message screen. You’ll be able to swipe to the bottom and tap on “Leave this Conversation” in red. You’ll get a confirmation button to slide up that will let you actually leave or cancel (just in case you change your mind).

If you’ve added people to the chat group, you can swipe to the left on their name and then hit the Delete button. They’ll know you’ve dumped them, though, so be sure to be mindful of that.

If your group convo is taking place among three or fewer people (not including you), then you only have the option to mute the conversation. Tap the Details button again, then swipe down to “Do Not Disturb.” Toggle that bad boy to ON and now you won’t get notifications for the conversation anymore. This is very handy when you want to see the conversation but not get buzzed and pinged every time someone posts a quick thought.

With those two strategies, you should be good to go — and no longer terrorized by the whims of a large number of casual acquaintances who like to talk in large groups.
