VLC made a comeback on iOS today, but if you didn’t get it within a few hours after it became available, then you’re out of luck, because it has disappeared again. But don’t worry — it hasn’t been pulled; an App Store issue is preventing it from being found.
We had feared that the pesky licensing issue that caused VLC for iOS to get the chop two years ago had reared its ugly head again and Apple had pulled the app, but then we decided that the developers behind it would have surely ironed out those kinks before launching VLC again.
And fortunately, that’s not the problem here. According to one of the developers, it’s just an App Store problem.
“Something appears to be wrong with @AppStore’s CDN today,” wrote Felix Paul Kühne on Twitter. “VLC on and off throughout the world, no top charts.”
As Kühne notes, there are no top charts for the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Canada, Denmark, Finland, and lots of other countries. Apple’s system support page says iTunes and the App Store are both working fine, but its developer center has been down for more than 24 hours.
“This site is undergoing maintenance for an extended period today,” a message reads. “Thanks for your patience.”
Apple is clearly doing some major maintenance behind the scenes, and that’s the reason why VLC is disappearing in some territories. If you don’t see it yet, then, keep looking — it should reappear sometime later today.
