How well are U.S. carriers selling the iPhone? Verizon Wireless, the second domestic carrier to get the Apple handset, announced it sold 2 million of the smartphones during the third quarter. The company did not reveal how many of the latest iPhone 4S units it sold, however.

Thursday, rival carrier AT&T said it activated 2.7 million iPhones during the period, a low level many believe was caused by consumers sitting on the sidelines until Apple launched the iPhone 4S in early October. Although AT&T provided fourth-quarter sales of the 4S (1 million as of Tuesday), Verizon did not provide a similar gauge of consumer interest in Apple’s latest smartphone.

Verizon did say 3 million of the 5.6 million smartphones it sold during the third quarter were powered by Google’s Android. Nearly all Internet devices Verizon now sell is using the carrier’s LTE network, the company also announced.
