This week’s must-have games roundup kicks off with the latest Need for Speed title from EA games, which is quite possibly the best arcade racing game available on iOS right now. We also have an excellent dual-stick shooter from Gameloft, Disney’s Wreck-it Ralph, and more.
Need for Speed Most Wanted — Universal ($6.99)
EA’s much-anticipated Need for Speed Most Wanted made its debut on iOS this week, and it’s an instant purchase if you’re into arcade racing games. It features some of the hottest super cars money can buy, which you’ll use to outrun the cops in some of the most dangerous Need for Speed pursuits you’ve ever experienced. All while enjoying console-quality visuals that will blow you away.
I’m not kidding — the visuals in this game are jaw-dropping. It’s the first racer I know of that gives Real Racing 2 a run (race?) for its money in the graphics department. And what’s more, its high-speed police chases make it far more exciting than any other racing game you’ll find on iOS.
Zombiewood — Universal (Free)
In my opinion — and I know not everyone will agree with me — Gameloft produces some of the best games on iOS. Zombiewood is the latest addition to its lineup, and it’s awesome. It’s an intense dual-stick shooter in which hordes of zombies have invaded the glitzy street of Los Angeles. Rather than fleeing the city like most inhabitants, you’re one of the few taking advantage of the opportunity to turn the carnage into the ultimate movie.
While the camera’s rolling, you’ll be given objectives by your director for each and every scene, and for each one you complete, you’ll be awarded a golden film reel. There are 11 different movies to play through — each with multiple scenes — and 10 different game modes. To help you combat each one, you’ll choose from 20 different weapons.
Zombiewood might be a freemium game with in-app purchases, but you don’t need to spend a penny to have a great time with this title.
Wreck-it Ralph — Universal ($0.99)

Wreck-it Ralph is a new app from Disney that boasts three awesome arcade games based on the new movie, including:

Knights of Pen & Paper — Universal ($1.99)
Inspired by the great RPGs of the ’90s, Knights of Pen & Paper is an indie turn-based game with retro pixel-art graphics, which aims to make your feel like you’re playing a traditional pen and paper RPG. You control both the characters and the dungeon master, and your choose which battles you’d like to take part in.
Put together a team of monsters from 17 characters in 12 different classes, and play more than 100 quests, fight 50 monsters, and collect over 100 hidden treasures. There are two campaigns in this release, but the title’s developers are promising more later on. If you’re a fan of RPG games, Knights of Pen & Paper will keep you busy this weekend.
ARC Squadron — Universal ($4.99)
In ARC Squadron, you play an “elite pilot” whose mission is save the universe from an evil race known as the Guardians, who are ravaging planets and killing peaceful life forms. You are the galaxy’s only hope for salvation, so it’s up to you to annihilate enemy forces in exciting head-to-head combats.
ARC Squadron boasts gorgeous visuals optimized for Retina display devices, a massive 64-level campaign, more than 20 environments, and 15 challenging levels with nine boss battles.
