hi I'm Steve Smith with colon Mac so
0:05
over the last few days you've probably
0:07
heard about the recent iPhone Ransom
0:08
hackings in Australia basically people's
0:11
iPhones iPads and Macs have been
0:13
remotely locked by hackers unless money
0:15
is transferred via Paypal asking for
0:17
around $50 to $100 to have the iPhone
0:21
unlocked now this isn't a new scheme
0:23
it's been happening since 2005 and with
0:26
PCS and laptops across the US and Europe
0:29
but as it's all new to Apple and it's
0:31
already been reported to spread to the
0:33
UK with apple yet to comment on the
0:35
problem I'm going to show you how to
0:37
avoid it and what to do if it happens to
0:46
started so before I go through all these
0:49
tips I just want to say first off do not
0:51
send a single dollar or Penny to the
0:53
hackers remember it's your iPhone or
0:55
iPad and it's not your fault it's been
0:57
hacked so how do you avoid this
1:00
well there's a couple of ways firstly
1:03
make sure you've got two-step
1:04
verification on your Apple ID the way
1:06
these devices are being hacked is by
1:08
gaining access to your Apple ID account
1:10
and using find my iPhone to do this go
1:13
to my Apple ID select manage your Apple
1:15
ID sign in from iTunes or the Apple
1:18
website select password and under
1:21
security go to two-step verification
1:23
select the get started and follow the
1:25
onscreen instructions I would take you
1:27
step by step through this but then I'm
1:29
sure I'll get hacked I'm not that stupid
1:31
secondly make sure your device has a
1:33
passcode on if you're locked out at all
1:35
you can unlock it just by entering the
1:37
passcode so what if this happens to you
1:40
well if you've got a passcode or you use
1:41
Touch ID you can unlock it straight away
1:44
but you might only have access for a
1:46
couple of minutes so make sure to change
1:48
your Apple ID password straight away
1:50
once you've done that you leave the
1:51
hackers high and dry if you didn't have
1:53
a passcode and it's been locked it's
1:55
pretty likely the hackers have added one
1:57
for you but luckily there is a
1:59
workaround but it ain't that pretty
2:01
you'll need to erase your iPhone using
2:03
either iTunes or recovery mode then use
2:06
a backup to replace your data and
2:08
settings on your device but then again
2:10
don't forget to change your Apple ID
2:12
password you can find the links below
2:14
for Apple's howto for recovering your
2:15
passcode well that's it for this video
2:18
have you got any other tips to get out
2:19
of this sticky situation or maybe it's
2:21
happened to you if so leave a comment
