0:17
thanks how where Were You by the way I was Griffin had no idea what what a bad
0:24
yeah I asked him where you went he's like I don't know I'm like you didn't think to ask Chicago and kosha Wisconsin Kenosha
0:32
Wisconsin went to Kenosha for a wedding okay and how
0:38
was Chicago well I was only in Chicago for like I don't know the night when I flew
0:45
in and then yeah got an Italian beef delivered that was awesome you got an Italian beef delivered uh oh with the
0:52
Italian beef sandwich okay I was going to say do I even want to ask
0:58
what's look you've been G for a week maybe you forgot the tone of this show but there's some things we keep to
1:04
ourselves leis the uh yeah so that was great you know spent spent the day the afternoon
1:10
with uh some friends of my wives and uh then we drove up to Kenosha where we I'm
1:16
sorry we were driven up to Kenosha which was nice wow and uh traffic you won
1:21
believe it but traffic in Chicago nightmare not good not and uh kosha was fine y Still Standing yep love it
1:28
wedding was awesome oh cool went back to Chicago we spent afternoon Chicago got some uh deep dish Chicago style pizza
1:37
then we got on a plane and flew home oh man did you cut up the rug at all that wedding uh half a slow dance Lewis
1:44
Wallace style jamming out on the floor yeah right uhuh nothing no oh man you
1:51
know I love dancing at weddings really it's it's one of the few places where I'm like I actually I'm like yeah let's
1:56
let's get out let's get out there and cut it up like dancing with my kids like it's
2:01
always fun to like dance with my kids so that kind of that kind of helps cuz when you're dancing with kids like they don't
2:06
know what they're doing so you're GNA look stupid no matter what you know and you're like you know doing like the little kid Shuffle and like twirling
2:12
them around and stuff and everyone's like oh what a great guy that's the only
2:18
reason why I do it is for the accolades of others I'll tell you what man I was had an Italian beef sandwich right now what
2:25
okay we're GNA have to talk about this later you're not familiar with the Italian beef no man you seem to have a strange obsession with the Italian beef
2:32
which look whatever does it for you Italian beef
2:37
cake did you ever did you ever watch the bear oh boy here we go did you is did
2:43
did Leander Kenny introduce you to that show no I don't I don't know I don't have any familiarity about bears Buster
2:51
honey was the closest I ever got jeez yeah we're learning so much in this
2:56
episode about Louis's sick twisted past is it a show like with Bear Grills or
3:03
something you've never heard of it never seen it it just got nominated I think for the most Emmy Awards really yeah
3:11
yeah yeah never even heard of it I think it's a I think it's on Hulu all right take your word for it uh look Lewis
3:20
should we get this thing rolling I feel like I feel like without Griffin here we
3:26
can just be the real authentic us you know it's like when you have Griffin in here you know how like you have kids who
3:32
are with their parents and like their parents are trying to have fun and the kids are always like Mom Dad stop you know and now that he's
3:40
gone we can just let it fly we'll probably we'll probably crash again but this time because of YouTube taking us
3:45
down and not just the app but uh yeah I I was sitting at the airport ordering a
3:50
glass of wine when uh and looking at the thing and then I saw watching the podcast right and it's oh yeah L
3:58
technical issues during that show um oh man I forgot the Tweet action of
4:03
course we'll see if anyone even shows up for this it's summertime well after last week I know and also these new stories
4:10
while exciting I don't know if they're going to bring them all in I'll be honest with you come on now but we'll
4:16
see it doesn't matter like I told Griffin it doesn't matter what the stories are because we bring the the
4:21
magic about anything right oh my God I looked at Twitter for a second and I see
4:26
like a naked Danny DeVito what the you are Mac account follows some really
4:34
ridiculous what you are just digging yourself deeper and deeper and deeper
4:39
shout out to Matt bfo shout out to anth Towers shout out to Betty Reyes they're
4:45
all here they're demanding that the show begin Lewis so I think we should get this thing rolling because I got to be
4:51
walking out of here in 45 minutes I don't know if you know that we have we have vamped ourselves off an
4:56
entire show oh great um so let me go and queue up Mrs you know
5:02
who oh Mrs D My Dear Mrs D you're sound excited
5:10
today oh yes my dear did I hear someone mention a bear no M D look I'm G stop you right
5:19
there because I don't want to know what you're doing with LK in the comfort of your privacy of your own room well my
5:26
dear I make him wear a ball in his mouth with the leather straps ah no
5:31
l oh what bring out the
5:39
this I want to watch Pulp Fiction this is precisely your fault Lewis you've been going down this road for the
5:45
entire episode let's go ahead Mrs D you don't mind no one wants to hear about that ever again that's an image I put a
5:51
in it been seared in don't please don't say that to her that can only take us further into a
5:59
place we don't want to go lead to a medical emergency don't give her any ideas Louis
6:06
oh boy oh my goodness all right look when the Griff's away the gens will play
6:12
I just made it up and let's go ahead and get this thing rolling we got a lot of
6:17
show to do and I gotta be walking these sweet buns out the door in 46 minutes
6:23
not enough time not enough time so we'll get the music going we'll get started in three two
6:29
hello and welcome to the coasty best 30 plus minut conversation you're going to hear all week long I'm your host a
6:37
Elijah join me today he was gone last week and now D Griffin Jones is nowhere
6:44
to be found this week he swears he has nothing to do with it but I heard Ohio
6:49
County Police they're not so sure and there's a full investigation underway
6:56
he's the managing editor of culac Lis Wallis is here here technically it would be the cadd
7:02
Sheriff's Office be honest Louis did you find
7:08
it uh no comment the ghilly suit the
7:13
preparation the bedroom escape hatch none of it helped none of it helped when
7:19
he woke up and he saw your bloodshot eyes staring at him from over the bed and those little fingers grasped on I'm
7:26
sorry little fingers well when little they're more powerful you know it's like a little grip action like a little like
7:34
a little rat rat holding on to a piece of cheese no way you're going to get that thing out of his little little hands yeah Griffin's out this week isn't
7:42
he he's in Jolly Old England this week isn't he I think that's where he said he was going yeah I it looked like he's on
7:48
his in the airport right now I don't know if he's made it England yet he might even be listening keep an eye on the chat might be a Columbus
7:54
International Airport with the other hundred people waiting to depart on the flights
8:00
hopefully the crowd strike doesn't get them oh jeez I know well we just barely
8:06
missed that we got in Thursday night it all went crap on Friday you you looked out big time so a couple of quick points
8:13
of order uh just real fast yes we crashed last week let's hope it doesn't happen again I was trying to adjust
8:20
Griffin's camera angle on the Fly and the whole thing froze and and bit the dust right there and that was it we
8:26
couldn't get back in the live stream I think it was a bug in our stream software which I updated right before we
8:33
went live so fingers crossed let's hope that doesn't happen again what could go wrong right yeah nothing like a last
8:39
minute update yeah L is running a new cutting uh Alpha version of Mac OS I'm
8:45
on Windows 12 Alpha what go wrong it's all GNA go great um also next week
8:52
probably no live show we may actually have no show at all I'm going to be out of town and so we can't do a live show
9:00
with migon at least not currently we probably need to figure that out and so Griff's going to be back and Lewis might
9:07
do an audio show we'll see I leave it to you I leave it to you if you guys want to do it so we may have no show next
9:14
week but we'll pick up the following week and then I'm going to have some time off in September too so we're going
9:21
to have to figure that part out I'm going to Disneyland so hopefully nothing can stop you nothing can stop me now I'm
9:27
going to have a good time a ball so we'll see what happens but just wanted
9:32
to give you a heads up all right we got a lot of stuff to talk about I should probably get into it uh we're talking about Apple's new iPhone 17 slim we got
9:41
a lot of new details we're going to cover you know if I didn't see these details coming from this Source I'm not
9:47
even sure I would believe this is a real thing but I think that this is actually going to happen I this this seems like
9:53
an oddball device to me but the source is pretty Rock Solid and we've got some
9:58
specs here to cover I'm also not totally convinced that this new slim model phone is not going to be
10:04
the rumored and uh incoming uh iPhone fold folding iPhone
10:11
you know like this formula just sounds like it would be the perfect formula for a folding phone and I kind of wonder if
10:17
these two stories are actually interconnected but we have some updates there as well we've got a new iPhone SE
10:24
coming down the pipe which LS is going to tell us about this is going to be I know it's always the best one one every time they release a new one but I think
10:31
specs wise this is going to be the absolute biggest best iPhone SE that's ever been released we got a pretty fun
10:38
Apple TV plus story you know they're spending all this money on all these shows and they're pulling in all these
10:45
alist actors and it's hilarious because I think they're finally starting to ask the question are we spending too much
10:50
money on all this stuff and now they're thinking about pulling back which is funny because that's what all the other streaming networks have done and apple
10:56
was just going you know they're going ham and finally I think they're starting to ask if all this investment has been
11:03
worth it or if they should be spending less and then of course there's a big story out this week about what's going
11:10
on with Redbox that service that that used to rent uh DVDs at those big red
11:15
boxes and then also sold digital movies they are it seems on the verge of going
11:20
under and a lot of people in fact I think all people who were who had
11:26
purchased digital movies from Redbox all all lost access to all the digital movies that they've purchased this is
11:32
the second time that we have seen something like this happen the first time being with Sony which I think after
11:38
all the public outrage um didn't end up happening but the question is a a
11:45
pervasive one like is your digital movie Library actually yours or is is is it
11:50
just a long-term rental and I think that the question might disturb you or the answer might disturb you in fact the
11:56
question and the answer might disturb you I don't know I'm not you but I'll tell you what won't disturb
12:02
you you ready for this leis what a Twist I uh I'm too good at
12:08
this leis I won't disturb you is our sponsor one password oh you've heard
12:14
about them LS I know that you have tired of reusing the same passwords all over the place getting hacked well one
12:22
password does more than just consumer products and imagine this if you would
12:28
Lewis this scenario your company's security it's like the quad at a college
12:35
campus there are nice brick Pathways between your buildings there are all
12:40
these company-owned devices those are the nice brick paths the it approved
12:46
apps the managed employee identities ah doesn't that just make you feel good and
12:52
then there are the paths that people actually use those are the shortcuts
12:58
warrant through the grass fields between the paths and are the straightest lines
13:03
from point A to point B those are the seedier paths that unscrupulous people like Lewis Wallace probably use they're
13:10
not trying to March down those nice brick paths and those grass Pathways
13:16
those worn Pathways those are the unmanaged devices the shadow it apps the
13:22
non-employee identities like contractors now most security tools out there only
13:27
work on those nice happy brick path Lewis but as you know being somewhat of
13:33
a security expert yourself a lot of the security problems take place on the shortcuts that's where your problems lie
13:40
one password extended access management is the First Security solution that braks all these unmanaged devices apps
13:46
and identities under your control it ensures that every user credential is strong and protected every devic is
13:53
known and healthy and every app is Vis is visible imagine that leis full utter
13:59
control just like what you've been trying to implement in the cult Mac writers room sounds intoxicating I know
14:04
sends a chill up the leg doesn't it uh one password extended access
14:10
management solves the problems that traditional I am and MDM can't touch it's security for the way we work today
14:17
and it's available now at the companies with OCTA and coming later this year to to Google workspace and Microsoft entra
14:23
check it out at onep password.com product/
14:29
xam that's the letters xam that's one password.com
14:34
SL productx M thank you to one password for
14:41
supporting this episode let's Dive Right In Lewis some would say that we're
14:46
already in so I'll pass the Baton to you let's talk about the new iPhone 17
14:52
slim that looks like it actually might be a real thing yeah the headline on this is uh
14:58
iPhone 17 slim and of course that's in quotes because we don't have any idea what this might actually be called but
15:03
it could become Apple's new premium handset very exciting uh we keep getting
15:09
rumors about not this year's phones but now next year's I we've like Leap Frog the entire thing everyone's already over
15:15
the iPhone 16 that that is an interesting observation we almost never talk about it it's crazy they but these
15:21
uh these rumors keep coming out and supposedly uh this iPhone 17 slim or whatever they decide to call it iPhone
15:27
17 air I ever oh uh I like you know what I bet you that's it leis the iPhone 17
15:33
air that makes way too much sense y uh supposedly uh Apple's developing this thing supposedly slimmest iOS handset
15:40
ever first came to light this spring you know we've been hearing these weird rumors about it uh many specifications
15:46
leaked out over this weekend that uh come from an interesting Source a a tipster I love that word
15:53
tipster known as ice Universe you familiar with ice universe is body of work I I know that that
16:00
person has gotten some stories right but not a good pseudonym to inspire confidence it
16:07
does not Inspire that much confidence I mean it'd be cooler if he was like Iceman you know every time I read it I
16:14
just think Ice Ice Baby and you know 15 seconds of dude you know what it's funny small
16:21
tangent here uh Vanilla Ice is all over Tik Tok and I keep seeing videos of of
16:29
him showing his car collection and dude that that dude is rolling it I don't
16:35
know if he's still making money or if he just made so much off Ice Ice Baby that he was just set for life but I think he
16:43
still tours and stuff and is still popular I thought sug Knight when he was
16:48
hanging him over the railing by his feet got him to sign over like his music rights or something like that but I
16:54
guess not cuz sus in the pen and Vanilla Ice is living man he's got like a j
17:00
lentil level collection of cars wow I mean beautiful expensive fully restored
17:06
Automobiles and he loves talking about it anyway back to the story interesting that was an unexpected uh tangent anyway
17:14
uh so all this stuff comes from Ice Universe uh trim down iPhone reported will include a 6.65 inch OLED
17:24
screen H larger than blah blah blah supposedly the normal one is going to have a 6.27 in uh it's but so it's it's
17:32
larger than that smaller than the 6.86 in screen in the iPhone 17 Pro Max I I
17:38
why am I even discussing it anyway in between size Goldilocks you might say yeah
17:43
uh all these phones are supposed to have 120 hertz promotion screens which are
17:49
awesome uh so this is where it gets interesting slim handset won't offer the 48 megapixel camera going into the other
17:56
2025 models probably because the camera would be too thick so it's got a less
18:02
good camera inide for being significantly sleeker than it predecessors the outstanding feature of the iPhone 7 slim will be its price
18:09
tag supposedly $1,299 that's $100 above the projected
18:16
cost the iPhone 17 Pro Max so it's more expensive Slimmer less but less powerful
18:21
and less less camera so this all sounded weird but then and this came out over
18:27
the weekend right then yesterday we get kind of backing this up
18:34
uh a post from mink quo the Apple Whisperer who who's almost never the one
18:40
and only okay so he comes out he says the the ultr slim model is not
18:45
positioned to replace the iPhone Plus instead Apple's exploring new design Trends beyond the existing iPhone lineup
18:52
which sounds kind of exciting since it's been what four years of same old same old uh uh quot says it's going to focus
19:01
on design over hi Hardware specifications uh it'll emphasize Innovative formfactor design rather than
19:07
competing on hardware specs like the processor camera and so then he rattles off some specs about this thing screen
19:14
size approximately 6.6 in which tracks with what ice Universe said uh screen
19:19
resolution 20 2740 X 1260 I don't even ever pay attention to any of that right all the screens look great to me let's
19:25
see processor a19 chip while they higher end iPhone Pros are going to get the a19
19:31
pro so it's going to have a less good processor but higher price y Dynamic
19:36
Island area everybody's curious about this right and the answer is similar to current models which is completely
19:43
pointless detail uh this is weird though metal frame he says it's going to have a titanium aluminum alloy metal frame with
19:50
a lower percentage of titanium than the current pro and pro Max Metal Frames with other iPhone 17 models using
19:57
aluminum metal frames interesting 5G Chip he says uh it's
20:02
going to have Apple's in-house 5G chip which we've heard on again off again rumors about uh and here's the craziest
20:09
One camera single rear camera wide camera yeah that that is an odd detail
20:16
and if the phone's going to be super slim I can understand that but the fact that the phone has a higher price but is
20:23
less powerful with a camera that at least from what we've seen so far is not going to be nearly as capable as the pro
20:30
level phones is a real chin scratcher yeah nutty you huh yeah uh and
20:39
one thing I didn't mention so I I said it's not going to replace a plus but he in in his thing he actually
20:46
says the plus model currently accounts for only 5 to 10% of total iPhone shipments so Apple's going to
20:51
discontinue the 17 plus and so this slim isn't going to be positioned as a
20:56
replacement for that or it's not another iteration of that it's a whole different
21:01
thing it's very odd I mean if it were if they were positioning this as like a
21:07
mid-tier device that would make more sense because then there would be like the low tier devices the mid- tier the high tier
21:14
which you could argue it already exists with their current setup although I think if you had like a real mid tier
21:19
device it would allow them to make the lower end devices cheaper with less features and then the higher tier even
21:25
more expensive which is probably what they would why would they would want to do that but to have a phone that's less
21:31
capable and and its main selling point is that it's super SL okay chat tell me is anyone interested in this a super
21:38
slim iPhone that is less powerful and has a
21:43
less capable camera and fewer cameras than the prole phone but more expensive that something seems off in
21:50
this story and and the only reason I said I feel like this is actually credible is cuz Mingo is weighing in on
21:57
it and if I may where there any other details about this leis that's uh that's basically everything this ties into our
22:04
next story about the folding iPhone uh let's see here I'm getting
22:12
ahead of myself here but I think that that's actually might slot in so we've talked about a folding iPhone
22:18
before and I'm kind of wondering if this folding iPhone and this iPhone 17 slim
22:23
store are actually the same one now the folding iPhone all one in the same it's
22:29
like a ree's cup of rumors wow what an analogy yeah so having something that's
22:37
just purely slim for a higher price that's lower spec does not make sense to
22:43
me but if the reason that it's slim is so is because it
22:48
folds now it makes sense now it's new and novel now as the rumor goes apple is
22:56
reportedly moving ahead with making iPhone with a folding screen it came
23:02
from it was a multiple unconfirmed reports sent on Tuesday um but they're saying that it
23:09
would not hit the market until 2026 so I'm wondering if and this is
23:14
according to the information which has gotten a ton of stories right before but I'm wondering if the release date is
23:21
wrong and they are working on a folding phone and the iPhone 17 slim is actually that phone because they're obviously
23:28
going to have to make the iPhone much Slimmer in order for it to fold and if
23:33
you had a phone that folded with a less capable camera and a less powerful
23:40
um because it had less battery powerful small battery because it has a smaller
23:45
battery like that's not something people would be interested in unless it had some cool Marquee feature like oh the
23:51
dang thing folds now people are interested it like they don't care about the camera as much they don't care about the power as much because it's going to
23:57
be a folding phone I don't know but it's one of the weirder rumors we've heard
24:03
and and if if it was if it it I can't imagine that quo would say all this
24:08
stuff and leave out oh and by the way it folds but you know maybe it is what you're saying like it's like little
24:14
pieces are coming in from different different sources stuff it's I I don't
24:19
I've never understood how how they would charge the most money for the one with
24:26
the Lesser camera and the Lesser processor or just because it's slightly thin well I guess a lot thinner maybe I
24:32
I saw some mockup that showed it it was like oh much much thinner right but I mean
24:38
this I guess it'd probably be lighter maybe so maybe it's so much lighter thinner it's another thing that has gone
24:45
missing from these uh descriptions of this phone is the weight yeah to your point quite odd if
24:52
it is I guess in my mind I'm thinking about it being like marginally thinner which wouldn't be a big selling point
24:58
but what if it was like half the thickness I forget what the actual spec was then actually that would kind of
25:05
make sense and maybe that's a step towards the folding phone so they make it thinner next year and then the year
25:11
after that they make a larger version with a hinge in the middle because they've already got the thinness locked in and now you have this phone that's
25:19
kind of like The Best of Both Worlds it's thin but it also has a huge screen and it folds so it's actually compact I
25:25
don't know we're just thinking out loud here yeah it's it's it's a hard one to kind of place your money in bet on right
25:32
it's like uh I I just don't I can't imagine it that would be a huge seller I mean the pro Max sells great every year
25:40
because it's got all the best features it's going be a hard hard sell like oh yeah this one's not nearly as capable as
25:47
that one that costs less I mean there's got to be there's got to be something else right there just has to
25:53
be something else I mean maybe it shoots lasers or something it doubles as a taser I mean it has to do
25:59
no that's a phone that's a phone I'd sign up for doubles is a taser the fry
26:04
phone I remember when I when I was first reporting for CAC and we went to
26:11
CES and I did a story on the taser booth
26:17
and I had my camera there and they were doing live tasering of people you know
26:24
like you had to volunteer did you step up no no no no are you crazy but might explain the hair to there was
26:30
this one guy watch it Loose watch it you're walking on Dangerous
26:36
Ground there was this one guy who stepped up and he's like I'll do it I'm not afraid and so I positioned myself in
26:46
like the perfect location and set up my camera like right in front of him so that I was taking highp speed images as
26:53
he got tased and like hit the deck you know because that thing drops you fast and you know he was okay I mean he he he
27:00
was a younger person and he came out of it fine he was a little shook up but he he was he had a great attitude about it
27:06
and so I kind of posted this like this lie hearted piece on CAC about the whole ordeal and some people were ready to
27:13
tear me limb from Liam Lewis they couldn't why because they considered like the taser to be like this barbaric
27:19
instrument and and maybe it is but he seemed like he was fine and look I don't
27:24
want to get tasted but if you gave me the option of being taser shot I know which one I'm shoot I'm picking you know
27:31
and like so the taser position I think at that time not that I I'm selling tasers here I've never even used
27:38
one uh but the position was it's like you know it's it's a non-lethal form of self- protection and
27:45
they were just giving examples which if you think about it it's kind of an awesome premise for a booth like come
27:50
watch people get tased in real time but uh that that story people were not happy
27:55
Le people were not still live on the site it probably is actually yeah search it out search CES taser on camac and I
28:03
think actually the story was pretty popular I got some pretty epic picks of that guy going down you know I was like
28:10
you know like every step of the way he was he was going for the deck we should we should bring it up is it odd there
28:15
did you turn into a gift uh let's see here I probably could uh CES Cult of Mac
28:22
taser it of course might might have got uh cs23
28:28
Cult of Max pick of the best was that year I found it dude I'm too good oh really look at that pick most
28:35
entertaining Booth taser shocks consumers with product lineup look at that guy's face a pretty
28:42
good picture I think I've got him going all the way down oh man oh yeah there he is
28:50
before look look at yeah for those of you listening there's there's like a
28:55
bunch of pictures before he got tased he's like SM in for the camera right he's ready to go oh my
29:02
God look at that one man he's getting his prostate exam oh my goodness that is the now I want to
29:09
emphasize he was a super good sport and he was totally fine afterwards you know
29:14
Great Looks on his face yeah what is that hair hair dude called it's called that it's called the 2011 crop top leis
29:22
I don't know pointy the Unicorn I'm posting this in the chat I we had to put
29:27
this in the show oh for sure I'll put this in the show notes for sure uh that's hilarious man
29:33
this this this 2011 wow that the story came out so darn good
29:39
piics uh all right look we got 23 minutes left here leis um and we got a
29:45
whole lot of show to get through but I do want to take a brief moment and
29:54
thank our sponsor notion for supporting us no is a place where any team can can
29:59
write plan organize and ReDiscover the joy of play it's a workspace designed not just for making progress but for
30:06
getting inspired oh my goodness if only you all knew the power of AI and Notions
30:12
AI can do all sorts of stuff for you if you haven't used it before hopefully you'll try it out
30:19
notion.com cultcast meetings have summaries docs find
30:24
themselves and every question has an answer notion AI turns knowledge into action from summarizing meting notes and
30:30
automatically generating action items to getting answers to any question in seconds if you can think it you can make
30:36
it let me just give you an example man I use I'm using AI for all sorts of stuff now for like meeting notes especially I
30:42
use it for just summarizing transcripts and and I've actually taken this a step
30:47
farther further I should say there you go further I should say thank you um
30:53
movie with Sean connory and uh uh I can't remember the name of the movie where they talk about that word but if
31:00
you ever want to supercharge your learning sign up for notion okay it's
31:06
free and you can go to a YouTube page or a video where you're trying to learn
31:12
something copy the transcript paste it into notion and have it summarize it for you and in 10 seconds you'll have every
31:20
single point of that whole 20-minute video in your notes forever it is an absolutely insane tool for productivity
31:28
for Learning and it's Apple notes supercharged way more features than
31:34
you'll probably ever see in a simple notetaking app because it has the power of AI and you can use notion for far
31:42
more than just summarizing and for you know generative AI content you know
31:48
writing copy on your behalf which we've used on the show before uh as an example
31:53
and it wrote a terrific uh like summary of what the C is and who we are we were shocked by how
31:59
good it was but it also has like project management features built in so you can
32:05
like create like a con Bon board assign tasks to people make sure that you're
32:10
staying organized and use it in a team environment to make sure that your project is heading in the right
32:16
direction this may shock you Lewis I'm not naturally an organized person but I have to be organized in my
32:25
line of work and all the things I have to get done I have to force myself to be organized and a great notetaking app
32:30
like notion with all the AI capabilities is one of the best ways to do that so if
32:36
you're ready if I've convinced you to get your life in order and you're ready to try try notion for free when you go
32:42
to notion.com cultcast that's all lowercase letters notion.com cultcast and start turning your ideas into action
32:49
and when you use our link you're supporting our show which we appreciate notion.com cultcast
32:56
okay where are we going next leis this show is a Meandering Adventure full of
33:01
wonder are we going back up the page to the iPhone okay let me yeah let me at least let me at least mention this story
33:10
so talking more about the iPhone 17 iPhone 17 camera could get DSLR DS
33:18
DSLR like variable aperture we really should be say we really should be saying mirrorless because no one uses dslrs
33:25
anymore L they're all mirrorless now is that true yes a DS DSLR um single
33:32
lens reflex is what it means and the lens is what shot the image from the camera up
33:38
until up up until the um part that that you view with your eye I think that's
33:44
how that worked and mirrorless doesn't do that anymore so you should just really call it mirrorless but whatever small small detail but get your
33:51
act together uh I actually have to admit that I did not know that current iPhones
33:58
did not have variable apertures they might just be fixed which was news to me
34:04
and apparently iPhone 17 according to the information is going to get a mechanically controlled variable
34:10
aperture for at least one iPhone 17 model which would of course allow the
34:15
aperture to open and close which means you could control the depth of field which is
34:21
really useful in a lot of scenarios like you know when you get the camera really close to your face if you have a wide open aperture then everything behind you
34:26
is blurry well if you want that to not be blurry then you need to be able to control the aperture and make it smaller
34:32
and then you get greater depth of field so everything you know behind you is in Focus which is something that you know
34:38
filmmakers often want to do and and then also it allows you to control how much light hits the sensor which is one of
34:47
the best ways to make sure that you're not getting too bright of an image or too dark of an image because what you
34:53
need to be fixed often times is the shutter like what you don't want to do to control how much light hits the
34:58
shutter in a movie situation is is reduce your shutter speed or increase
35:03
your shutter speed you want to leave that pretty much the same and then change your aperture or your ISO if you
35:09
can't tell when it comes to cameras I know a few things leis here's a camera guy
35:14
camera King some people call me the camera King with two case camera King it's this whole thing I mean I haven't
35:21
actually ever had anyone call me that but they could and I wouldn't mind and
35:27
sometimes I think that to do like a camera YouTube channel but I don't think anyone cares about
35:32
cameras anymore I mean there are some don't get me wrong I love cameras I follow camera news but not nearly as
35:38
popular as like so much other technology where you can actually build like a thriving YouTube channel I digress
35:47
yeah you got more to say about that I was just I was thinking about it but then you interrupted me and I lost my
35:52
whole train of thoughts things just well so is there any chance that this is the camera that goes in the the super slim
35:58
iPhone and somehow it's actually better that would be interesting so it would
36:04
get a variable aperture but lose the the multiple different cameras is there is
36:11
there any way that I mean does anybody even really care about that so much I mean aren't the cameras
36:18
so good and and the digital stuff that happens in the background so effective
36:23
that a normal person doesn't care or even want
36:28
like I mean are they talking about this giving you more control or just it automatically uses the uh different
36:36
aperture sizes to I don't know I I well you could probably control it manually and it does help in photographic
36:41
situations but I think the more the more powerful use case is in a video
36:47
situation where you need to control light and that's when or you want to control depth of field that's where it
36:53
would be a lot more useful to but yeah they already do so much of that with you
36:59
know with software that's true the portrait mode stuff and the I mean that's HDR mimicking the different
37:06
apertures yeah yeah and uh I mean so that it's just weird like making it
37:12
more complicated to do things that already does pretty well with software uh I would assume that you know there
37:18
would be more failures with a an aperture that's shrinking and and expanding all the time now the one thing
37:26
that the current I iPhones can't do is make your background more visible and
37:33
expand the depth of field the software can add a blurry effect which mimics a
37:39
small depta field but they cannot reverse that so if you get your phone close to your face and the background is
37:46
slightly blurred I'd have to check it out because I'm not even sure how blurry it is when you get the iPhone close to your face but or the camera close to an
37:55
object the adjustable apture would allow you to have a a much wider depth of field so
38:01
everything would be in Focus all the time and I don't think that's something that current iPhones could do so there is a use case for it I think but I mean
38:09
how how much would normal people actually want this feature probably not many but you know it's one of those
38:16
things you'd like to pay more for this well it's gonna be part of a sweet of upgrades leis like easier breakability
38:26
lower battery life yeah there was there was Zero indication that that's that's what this headed for right just to be
38:31
clear this is just us yeah pondering the possibility right because it did it just said in some iPhone 17 model I believe
38:42
that's true well look we've got 14 minutes left before I have to be walking out the door I'm sorry I know I I it's
38:48
become a meme at this point the sweet buns walking out the door Meme and it doesn't always happen although it feels
38:54
like it's happening more and more these days and and L and I started really late today unfortunately because we were having some technical issues but we've
39:02
got 13 minutes it's going to be a short show for sure uh do you want to rip
39:07
through this iPhone se4 rumor yeah you want to do it real quick and then we might have time for fast as I can okay
39:12
and and I'll I'll skip the per strings on Apple TV plus story because even though that one's fun I think the the
39:18
red box story is actually more important oh well let's skip the iPhone SE e no
39:23
what to well I do the Apple TV people okay iPhone se4 this is also coming from
39:29
Ice Universe supposedly display is going to be 6.06 in up from the se4 is 4.7
39:35
that's that's actually pretty substantial that's huge that's a massive upgrade uh other big news possible OLED
39:42
panel which would be a first for an SE uh let's see uh blah blah blah blah blah
39:47
previous rumors indicated it's going to look like iPhone 14 and run on the Apple a18 chip likely to come with face ID
39:55
instead of touch ID included 48 megapixel camera is going to be you know bigger than the the better than the one
40:03
in the most highend right that's crazy uh might support enough me more memory up to 8 gigabytes to support apple
40:10
intelligence probably going to go USBC and uh of course you wouldn't believe this but all those upgrades and things
40:17
might bump the price from $429 up to a rumored $549 supposedly coming iPhone se4 in
40:26
Spring 2 go but you know what 54 549 for
40:31
a phone with all that stuff is a darn good value in my opinion I mean that's
40:38
like the perfect phone for most people you get the OLED you get the USBC you
40:44
know it's got the internal does it have that the regular iPhone doesn't have yeah I know it what is it missing well it's yeah I mean it's gonna
40:50
be running slightly older it's slightly older uh internal components um but for
40:56
550 dude that's a that's a crazy that's a slap your mama price right
41:01
there you know what I'm saying you gotta you gota yeah you got to talk about the Apple TV thing because there's a at
41:07
least one statistic in there that was mind-blowing all right I'll do it real quick and then if we run out of time then I'll bump the red box
41:14
story because I do think it's important to talk about it about your digital movie Pur purchases I okay not gonna get
41:22
ahead of myself here I almost just dived in you're dang dangling that carrot list let's talk about TC you know what TC's
41:29
favorite thing to do is tighten the first strings list tight the pennies tighten yeah pinching those pennies and
41:37
sometimes when he puts on the Vision Pro and he's doing the invisible blueberry picking he likes to think of that as the
41:42
invisible Penny Pinchin that's what he loves to do uh I'm gonna go ahead and close the story because we're not even
41:48
going to cover that one and uh oh man I opened up all the stories there we go
41:54
Apple Titans the purse strings on Apple TV plus Apple reportedly wants to reduce
42:00
the amount of money it pours into Apple TV streaming service and the company also wants to get more bang for its Buck
42:08
the result will likely be fewer Apple TV Plus shows and decreased spending on Marquee projects plus underperforming
42:15
series can expect to get canceled more quickly o you know it's just amazing that that hasn't been happening already
42:22
but I think the Apple was so focused on like let's just do whatever we can to make this thing work that we're g to
42:28
like it's uh no expenses spared no expense spared Apple TV Plus cost too
42:34
much to produce Apple TV plus launched almost 5 years ago wow and there's been
42:40
questions from the start over whether it makes Financial sense for a computer maker to produce films and TV series by
42:45
one measure Apple TV plus is doing well the streaming service recently earned 72 Emmy nominations no one cares it's most
42:52
ever only three of its Rivals earned more that's a lot of Rivals earning more
42:58
you're in fourth place that means uh holy dude they got 72 and
43:05
they're in fourth place they're handing out way too many Emmys give me a break 72 and you're in fourth place well
43:12
nominations oh nominations okay well still I mean if you are getting
43:18
nominations then those are potential awards that you could walk away I guess you could be have multiple companies
43:23
nominated more times anyway okay mind uh Apple toally start supposedly starting
43:28
to question whether it's paying too much for what's getting Apple Services boss Eddie Q has been having regular meetings
43:34
with Studio Chief Studio Chiefs Zack van Amberg and Jamie erck to go over budgets
43:41
pushing them to exert more control over spending on projects oh boy the Golden Days Are Over no more
43:48
just spending whatever you want you know it's like that line from ghost Ghostbusters eventually the
43:55
private sector expects results total spending so far on Apple TV plus is more than $20
44:02
billion wow it sank 500 million into the killers of the flower Moon Napoleon and
44:08
Argyle alone and only one of those recent films became even a mod of
44:14
success according to Bloomberg and that's the thing about these streaming services you know it's like you just
44:19
don't know if a show is actually being watched by anyone even shows that become actual
44:25
hits don't necessarily prove financially successful Severance is a beloved s Sci-Fi series but problems behind the
44:31
scenes mean that it allegedly cost 20 million per episode and Apple's paying
44:36
the cast of Emmy nominated the morning show 50 million to do the upcoming
44:41
season 4 and I just don't know how do you measure Lewis whether a show is
44:47
bringing people in how do they attribute new subscribers to specific
44:52
shows I don't know I mean I guess by how many viewers are watching it yeah that maybe that one maybe seem
44:59
obvious and I'm sure they have all kind of Statistics that they'll never share with anyone but uh yeah it's weird and
45:05
that's so much money and the whole idea is that it helps sell
45:11
more iPhones interesting well I don't know if that is the idea I think that used to be the
45:18
idea the services used to be a reason to purchase into the Apple ecosystem but I
45:24
think TC is completely removed them from that position now it's
45:31
we have all these people buying iPhones the iPhones sell themselves how do we squeeze every last drop of profit from
45:38
the tee of our consumers that's why your teeths are always sore Louis I told you
45:43
that's got to be it it's TC milking every last decimal of profit out of
45:49
every person and with the
45:55
iPhone diminishing in I don't want to say in popularity but in growth they had to find another way
46:02
to pad TC's Pockets but like week after week we run a story about you know one
46:09
this this TV show or movie or one or another on Apple TV plus is you know at the top of the charts according to uh
46:16
you know not neelon because they don't they apparently they don't cover like streaming on all devices but uh you
46:24
know like every every week There's an Apple TV Plus show that's like the most
46:29
watched or one of the most watched on streaming According to some of these these people who you know come up with numbers from God knows
46:37
where Tim Cook's Tim Cook's rumor machine no uh they they measure things
46:42
differently than neelon but anyway yeah although I think neelen more recently started tracking
46:51
how many people are watching streaming shows cuz for a long time they didn't it was a complete Black Box cuz you know
46:56
Netflix doesn't want people to know their metrics those are private same with apple and there's all sorts of ways
47:04
to spin how popular a show is right it's like you've heard companies say this is
47:10
the most streaming we've ever had on a second Tuesday in a leap year to our
47:15
knowledge it's like wow it makes the show sound like it's popular and then you find out the show's canceled for season two because everyone hated it you
47:22
know there's all sorts of ways that they spend stuff to get just to keep their stock price up and create like this
47:28
perception that a show is more popular so that people go and watch it because no one wants to watch a loser show it's so difficult these days to just break
47:35
through but uh and it's so so fragmented yeah well look I could talk about the
47:42
story all day but you know what that's a lie because my my day is over I have to
47:47
go so we got to go ahead and wrap it up there red box delay we can't do the red box we'll have to do that one next week
47:54
and hopefully you'll be back next week with a new show which I won't be there
47:59
for so probably not even next week but maybe the week double delay or maybe I'll record a segment and and off topic
48:07
there you go maybe we can do an off topic is off topic yeah we should do an off topic maybe we should make that the off topic okay problem solved and if
48:14
people want to support that was easy off topic support. cast.com support.the
