What's up guys, Steve here, back with Sam Guilts from Sam Does Design
0:03
Today he has got me to do a challenge, a drawing challenge. I am not the best but I'm going to give it a go
0:08
and hopefully we'll learn a few things. There will be a longer version over on Sam's channel
0:12
so I'll link that in the description down below but let's not put it off anymore and get started
0:23
So the challenge that we're going to be doing today is we're going to be sketching these Beats headphones and we're going to be doing it in three rounds. We've got a 10 minute round
0:31
we've got a five minute round and we've got a one minute round and we're going to sketch the same headphones each time and each one we're going to get quicker and quicker and quicker
0:38
and you're going to see the difference between a 10 minute sketch and a one minute sketch. So even for me and this is a disclaimer now, even for me my sketch isn't going to be very good
0:47
so we'll see in 10 minutes how good we can get and then we'll take it along from there
0:53
Off we go. Cool so if I talk about my process as I'm going through as well so I'm going to
1:00
break it down into some shapes and I've got the ruler tool on here and I've just put in some
1:07
guidelines that I can then start to use the ellipse tool blocking in some shapes
1:12
I've got my pencils unpaired. How is it? How's it going? Badly, badly
1:26
What I've done as well just as you start going along I've started sketching things on different
1:30
layers so then now for example if I want to just change one ear cup I can go in and tweak it
1:39
a little bit there. And how long have you been sketching on your iPad? So I've been sketching
1:44
purely on the iPad now for about two years, almost every day, so I start to know tricks of the trade
1:52
how to cheat, how to get things done quicker. So when you colour in do you do that on a separate
1:56
layer as well? Yeah so I'll do all my colouring on a layer underneath or actually it gets really
2:02
messy with layers underneath. Right and is there any particular reason you use Sketchbook instead
2:07
Procreate? So I do like to hop between the two. I use Sketchbook because of the ellipse guide
2:16
and the rulers but Procreate has more image manipulation so it has things like levels
2:22
curves, adjustments and things like that. So I do hop between the two
2:26
Three, two, one. I've missed my B. I struggle with my B as well. Okay so there's a bit of a difference
2:46
A bit of a difference. You're learning to sketch from an image off to the side, you're learning to
2:51
sketch the beats, you're learning the new app, you're learning to sketch on the iPad, there's a
2:55
lot to learn there and I like the composition of yours. It wasn't intentional. It's always
3:03
intentional. That's what we say at the end. Okay so I think the 10 minutes one went pretty quick
3:09
it went pretty well. Now we're going to go down to five minutes. Half the amount of time
3:14
We've already done a sketch. I'm more confident now because I've used it. Exactly. So I have a
3:18
feeling yours is going to improve but because I already knew the app and I already knew how to sketch on an iPad, mine's going to get worse. A lot worse. So if we start a timer and we'll hop
3:28
straight in. Three, two, one, go. I'm going to press the wrong button
3:38
Headphones are quite difficult because there's not a lot of straight lines on them
3:43
So to be fair I've picked quite a hard thing to sketch. Well thank you
3:52
I thought it'd be easier using this ellipse tool. Is it not? I'm struggling a bit
3:59
Now again you're learning a new tool again. 30 seconds or so
4:09
I'm gonna go freehand. Yeah. Stop. Wow, yeah, do you know what? It's not great. But it's, would you say it's worse? It's cleaner
4:22
It's this bit that needs to be sorted out. Yeah, no, like you say it's cleaner. I think yours is
4:29
better. I think mine's worse. I don't know, it's still pretty good. You can tell what that is. Not looking forward to, was it one minute next? This next one's a one minute one
4:39
Frantic one. All right, I am ready to go whenever you are. Cool. Yep. Three, two, one, go
4:55
I'm going to lose followers based on it. No one's going to follow me ever again
5:01
That's it. That's it. That's it. That's it. Look at that. That is ridiculous. I've got half an ear cup
5:14
Yeah, I think we know who won that. Well, amazing. No, I think you've done really well. Like I said, learning so many things at the same time
5:22
and you've got sketches to prove that you've learned them. I still don't know which one's
5:26
best. I think the first one's the best. Well, that's it for this video. As I mentioned
5:31
Sam has got a longer edit of this video over on his channel, so make sure to check it out. I'll
5:35
