hey everyone today I'm going to show you
0:07
some of the secrets of spotlight now for
0:09
most of you i'm guessing that when you
0:11
go up to spotlight and just by clicking
0:13
the magnifying glass in the corner of
0:14
your screen to search for something you
0:17
probably type something like Apple and
0:20
you look for your results from there but
0:24
that's not all spotlight can do there's
0:26
a lot of the functions with it that
0:28
apple doesn't really talk about but they
0:30
make spotlight a really powerful search
0:31
tool and much more powerful than it
0:34
appears on the surface so let's start
0:36
off right away with a keyboard shortcut
0:38
now to access spotlight instead of going
0:41
up and clicking the magnifying glass
0:43
what you can do is you can hit command
0:45
spacebar and it'll bring up spotlight
0:47
and you can start typing so you don't
0:49
have to move your mouse all the way up
0:50
there and click that's pretty nice now
0:52
from here of course you can search
0:54
normal things like once again Apple but
0:57
you can also put things in quotes and
0:59
when things are in quotes I it restricts
1:03
the search so first of all if I search
1:04
something like Apple Computer anything
1:08
that has the word Apple and computer in
1:11
it can show up here in the list but if I
1:14
put quotes around the words Apple
1:16
computer now the documents or whatever
1:22
that shows up has to have that phrase in
1:25
the search so you're not going to get
1:27
results that have just the word Apple
1:28
somewhere and then just over a computer
1:30
you're gonna have you're going to get
1:32
that exact phrase that's handy you can
1:34
do some different words to separate your
1:36
searches as well and those are and not
1:39
and or and you have to type these all in
1:42
caps so the first of all the one that's
1:45
and and is what you're normally going to
1:48
see so if i would type in apple computer
1:53
same thing as typing in apple and
1:58
computer you're going to get the resume
2:00
results if you do that but if you type
2:03
in apple or and i once again in caps
2:06
computer we're going to get results that
2:09
have the word apple or computer you can
2:11
see when I search for apple
2:13
top hit is Apple script editor now let's
2:16
say i don't want apple script and i want
2:18
something else so i can type in apple
2:20
not script and it will give me not that
2:25
results so now i won't see anything with
2:28
script in it so you can see how that
2:29
kind of works another powerful thing is
2:31
i can use kind and then a colon and then
2:34
right after that type whatever kind of
2:37
document or whatever I want so if i type
2:39
kind colon app now it's going to show me
2:42
a list of application and there in order
2:44
of recently used or i could do kind fine
2:48
now it's going to give me a list of
2:49
different fonts this works for pretty
2:50
much anything so i can even do kind
2:54
folder and it'll give me a list of
2:56
folders the possibilities of using kind
2:59
are pretty endless you can do that for
3:01
aliases apps audio safari bookmarks
3:04
contacts emails folders fonts events
3:08
images movies pdfs etc etc keeps going
3:11
on i can also do the same thing with
3:14
name colon firefox i'm i'm only going to
3:17
get results with the name of firefox so
3:21
you can see it just shows me firefox and
3:23
in the firefox application that i have
3:26
on my ipod i can do the same for created
3:29
if i want to find documents that were
3:30
created on a certain date so i can't
3:31
i've been created and i'm going to colon
3:34
and then just for example 6 18 11 so now
3:39
it's going to search everything that was
3:41
created on today and it's going to list
3:45
those all off here and in order of when
3:47
you last opened them or were they when
3:49
they were last created rather i can do
3:51
the same with a date so if I second date
3:53
and I put a specific date it will give
3:56
me things created on that date I can
3:58
also use less than or greater than to
4:00
specify before or after a certain time
4:02
another cool thing if you're looking for
4:04
music you can type in audio bit rate and
4:07
then colon and I'll say go on 256 it
4:12
shows me all the songs with that audio
4:13
bit right Sam for composer to protect
4:16
composer no there's songs with composer
4:19
of Metallica I can do some things with
4:21
photos too so i can type is o and made
4:23
it on iso 100 their show me all the
4:26
pictures taken
4:27
with iso of 100 that's cool I can do
4:30
calculations on your too so out of
4:32
having to go to dashboard to open up
4:33
calculator or even going to open up the
4:35
calculator application I can go to
4:37
spotlight and I can type in something
4:38
like 6 plus 2 6 plus 8 let's say times
4:42
parentheses 9 and now you can see it did
4:45
their parentheses that way i can do
4:47
powers as well so i can do six to the
4:49
eighth power and then you can see that
4:51
pretty much any math function that you
4:53
do on the calculator application you can
4:55
do it here and then when i hit enter it
4:57
pops open calculator if I want to I can
5:00
do definitions to from dictionaries I
5:02
type in Apple let's say you can see
5:04
right here definition and hit enter it
5:07
will pop open dictionary and from here I
5:10
can see the definitions of apple and
5:12
also if I was searching for let's say
5:14
Apple if I go up and I want instead of
5:16
opening something I just want to see
5:18
where it's located in the finder Oh
5:19
first of all if I hover over hover over
5:21
it it will show the path or for
5:24
definition will show the definition but
5:26
if I command click on it then it opens
5:29
up the folder where it's located and
5:30
shows me right there that's handy and
5:32
also if I want to skip down in different
5:34
categories you can see I have top hit
5:36
definitions applications etc I can hold
5:40
down command and use the up and down
5:41
arrows to switch to different categories
5:44
that's neat as well so those are just
5:46
some of the kind of hidden features
5:49
within spotlight and if you and if you
5:52
utilize these to their full capabilities
5:54
spotlight can be a really really
5:56
advanced searching tool and almost as
5:58
advanced as searches within mac OS
6:00
itself in a finder window where you can
6:02
have all these different kinds of last
6:05
open dates you can make it almost as
6:07
powerful as that without having to go
6:08
through all the trouble of entering all
6:10
those things so I hope you found this
6:11
video useful and thank you for watching
