Hello and welcome to the Cultcast, the best Apple conversation you're going to hear all week long. Joining me today is
0:08
D. Griffin Jones. Hello, Griffin. Good evening. Right at the top of the show, I have a quick apology I'd like to make. Last week, I accidentally said the
0:14
Apple cross body strap was $99 when it is it is in fact $59. So, if I if that
0:22
discouraged anybody from participating in rampant consumerism, I apologize. Wow. Misinformation and disinformation.
0:28
Okay. Well, thank goodness we got that out of the way. Yep. Critical fact check,
0:33
right? And Lewis Wallace. Here's Lewis. Hello, Louis. Hey, how's it going? Good. It's all right. Although it's
0:40
muggy and and wet and all kinds of crazy weather here in San Francisco.
0:45
What is going on? I feel like I'm in Cincinnati. Yeah. Well, it's going to change this weekend. They've got a heat wave coming
0:50
in. What? It's be blazing hot. I just looked at the weather forecast. It's like hot,
0:55
hot, hot coming up. So, I'll believe it when I see it. Some California weather at last. Well,
1:01
anyway, on the show this week, we've got some insane Apple leaks madness. What's going on? What's going on over there in
1:06
Certino? It's completely crazy. Got the iPad Pro completely unboxed and
1:12
benchmarked even, you know, way before its release. So, we're going to discuss that. We've got some actually got some
1:18
uh one of our writers looked into it and uh got a good theory about how they got it. Um, also uh I mean the leaks just
1:25
keep coming. Vision Pro, MacBook Pro confirmed. All kinds of leaks coming from all sorts of places. It's leaking
1:31
like a sie over there. It's insane. Uh then there's some bad news though as well about the Vision Pro. Bad news.
1:38
Very bad news. And then we're going to talk about our very own David Snow's setup which is going to be the highlight of the show.
1:46
So stay tuned for that. Uh uh oh yeah, and there's a big up there that's huge news in the world of mice, right? A
1:53
massive massive mouse rodent infestation. What? Oh. Oh, it is an infestation. Yeah, it's
2:00
it's it uh Anyway, I can't wait to talk about that because Lewis knows a lot about this particular
2:08
steeped in knowledge. We're going to go deep deep deep into this particular story. But before we get
2:14
on with the show, we would like to thank our wonderful sponsors, uh Squarespace.
2:20

3:05
Squarespace before because they're look up a local restaurant or business. They probably got a website built with
3:11
Squarespace. They they have some great designs are just really intuitive. You know, collapsible menus, full full bleed

4:02
checkout. That's squarespace.com/cultast. All right. Very nice. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
4:08
Anyway, let's talk about this unboxing video, which I'm sure everyone's seen. This is completely bonkers. There's this Russian YouTuber called Wulaccom,
4:16
I think is how you pronounce his name. Viccom. How to do it in a Russian accent. Uh anyway, he was able to unbox
4:22
a 2025 iPad Pro and he ran he did this all on video and he ran benchmarks on the thing. Uh this is of course is the
4:28
this update to the new to the iPad Pro which hasn't been released yet. And um
4:34
this is bad. He got he he got a box product, you know, like uh uh pulled it out of its box and then ran the test on
4:40
it. This is I of course we we've never seen this before except last year when he did the same thing
4:46
with the um M4 MacBook Pro. Uh and he had this a month before the uh the
4:52
laptop launched. Uh so it's not a hoax. This this you know it looks like this is real. So he ran this uh these
4:58
benchmarks. He ran the Geekbench 6 multi-core CPU test and he found a 16% performance gain over the M4 iPad Pro.
5:06
Uh but uh where's the other one? The multiore was about what 10% or something? Something like that. Yeah.
5:12
Yeah. It was kind of modest. I mean, you know, kind of what you'd expect, but then there's this massive leap in 34 34%
5:18
in graphics performance. So the GPU performance of this thing is like is is is way up there. And this is sort of the
5:25
same thing that we've seen on the iPhone 17. Like, you know, yeah, a modest update to the CPU, but the the the
5:30
graphics, they have like machine learning accelerators in each GPU core, and it's got like, you know, six GPU
5:37
cores or five or six. So, you know, they they build the M5 out of the A17 Pro
5:43
chip and, you know, it's all it's all the same technology, all the same cores. And so, yeah, the M5 is also going to have a big leap in graphics. It it
5:50
allows for like you know more complex rate tracing, better games performance. Um but also AI, right? I mean this is
5:57
going to improve AI performance too now. Oh yeah. Yeah. Because that's all that's all based on like you know GPUs and you
6:03
know the uh and the actual neural engine itself. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And these things are already screamers anyway, aren't they? I
6:08
mean they're uh the these chips are way up. They're way better than anybody else than Qualcomm. Although Qualcomm, I saw
6:14
some tweet that they're catching up. Mhm. Uh in terms of um in terms of I think CPU performance, but
6:20
you know, this is a more modest CPU year. I I think the M6 is going to be a bigger bigger update for that and they'll probably pass them again, but it
6:27
is getting more competitive. You know, we we've seen, you know, reports of Apple losing some of their top talent on
6:33
the Apple silicon team, but it does mean that everything will be more faster and more competitive. It won't be, you know, Apple lapping everybody else year after
6:40
year. Yeah. Anyway, and so the other thing is it has 12 gig of RAM, which is uh top 12
6:46
G RAM. Whoa. For maximum headbutting.
6:52
Yeah. Uh 12 GB of RAM. 50% more than the current M4based model. So, that's a
6:58
pretty big leap. 8 to 12. Not bad. Not Not too shabby at all. Uh uh but here's
7:03
the bad news. Or I guess the good news. I don't know. Is it good or bad? It's got the same design as the previous generation, the M4 iPad Pro.
7:10
if you got some um cases or whatever, it's going to fit no problem there. One thing that it doesn't have is a second
7:18
front-facing camera, or at least according to Wilskum, uh the Russian YouTuber, he could not find uh another
7:25
camera on the front, I believe. So, there was a lot of rumors about that. It was going to have two
7:31
cameras, but apparently it's only got one. Too bad. Um, and anyway, so basically this is the iPad Pro with the
7:36
M4 is being replaced by the M5 and a second Face ID scanner though, like people were saying, you know, it's
7:42
great that they moved it to the the the camera and Face ID sensor to the horizontal edge, but if you're if you
7:47
happen to hold it vertically, it's really easy for your thumb to cover up the camera or Face ID sensor and suddenly it doesn't work and, you know,
7:53
catches you off guard for a second. So, the rumor was saying, you know, they would have two of these, one on the long edge and on the short edge, but uh
8:00
apparently that was uh that rumor did not come to fruit. Too bad. Too bad. Yeah, it's a big big disappointment. Oh,
8:07
I'm sorry. So, Wilkum though is not a fan of iPads apparently. Like, he's much more of a computer guy. So, he didn't
8:13
really talk about how amazing this thing, how slim and lightweight it is, and he makes no mention of this this tandem OLED display that's way better
8:19
looking than any screen in any MacBook. So, I didn't even touch upon any of that stuff. Uh, but the thing is this is
8:26
probably rumored to be unveiled in just a few weeks in October, probably at Apple's October event. So, we probably
8:33
don't have to wait very long to see this. Um, but we are going to have to wait much longer for the M5 Mac book or
8:40
Macs. Anyway, M5 Max, they're probably going to be coming uh early next year, early 2026. So Rajesh uh writer had a
8:48
quick you know look around and this Whistleum guy has got like he's probably he's like the Marcus Brownley of Russia.
8:55
He's got 10 million subscribers. He's Mr. Tech YouTube. Um and speculation is
9:02
is that he got this the one thing they have in common between this iPad Pro and the M4 MacBook that he revealed last
9:09
year is that they were both made in Vietnam. Mhm. So the speculation is it's coming out of
9:15
the Lux share uh factory in Vietnam which Apple contracts out to and of
9:21
course there's no official Apple channel in Russia. You know the only way to get
9:26
Apple products is through sort of on the gray market or through third party resellers. Um so there's Apple doesn't
9:32
really have any, you know, the kind of clout in Russia to to to come down on these guys. Um it's a bit of a wild west
9:40
out there. If um if uh you know Marcus Brownley or some western um YouTubers
9:46
have got this, you know, they they they would have been such they would have been subject much more to the heavy hand of the law uh that Apple would have
9:52
broke down on them. So it's interesting. I thought though that you know they're getting these things. I mean this is Have we ever seen this before? The the
9:59
you know boxed products leaked before this before the M4 MacBook. I don't
10:04
think I don't think so. I mean the these are just fully unboxed and fully functional. Like I I think the theory is that you
10:10
know because in Russia Apple doesn't they they ceased all Russian operations. They don't sell any products in there.
10:16
Not since the you know Ukraine invasion but you know but people in Russia are still getting these things through the
10:21
gray market. And so now that means they're getting you know when Apple starts manufacturing these new products
10:27
they're getting the new stuff before everybody else on the same gray market. So kind of kind of fascinating there. Um,
10:33
it just so happens that the two products he's gotten his scoop on haven't actually been very interesting so far. Like, you know, the M4 Mac Pro is a bit
10:39
of a boring spec bump. The M5 iPad Pro is a bit of a boring spec bump. I mean,
10:44
dear it'll be really interesting if he gets his hands on like an an all new design like the OLED MacBook Pro that's
10:51
supposedly going to be like the M6 one, you know, next year. That the fact that these products were leaked in advanced
10:57
is probably the most interesting fact about them.
11:02
I don't know. I mean, it's beautiful looking machine. Uh, you know, I'd love to drop a couple of grand on one of
11:07
these, but um uh maybe um next year the M6, I think, is going to be the bigger
11:13
the upgrade, isn't it? And like you said, the the I mean, the new MacBook Pros that are coming out are going to be
11:18
pretty nice, but the one to wait for is the one after, isn't it? The one with the OLED screen and uh
11:23
and possibly a touch screen as we've been talking about before and another die shrink on the uh on the processor. So,
11:30
and when's that supposed to be when's that rumor to be coming out? I think next fall.
11:35
Okay. So, they'll have a they'll have a spec bump in the in the in the spring. Well, as we'll see in the next story,
11:41
the the M5 MacBook Pro might actually be coming sooner than we think. So, the FCC accidentally exposed Apple's plans for
11:47
several unreleased products, including an updated Vision Pro headset, new MacBook Pro models, and refreshed iPad
11:53
Pro devices, according to reports on Tuesday. uh the leaks mark uh the latest
11:58
in a series of uh unexpected disclosures from the regulatory agency that's uh
12:04
probably frustrating all those people in Certino. Uh earlier this week they
12:10
leaked iPhone 16e schematics like hundreds and hundreds of pages of you know confidential like technical
12:16
information just on a PDF on the web accidentally. So we wrote a separate
12:22
story about that and I I try like leafing through this document if you're not a hardware engineer.
12:28
It'll be complete nonsense to you but um yeah just like hundreds and hundreds of pages. It's 170 pages in super technical detail
12:35
about everything you'd ever need to know about the iPhone 16. Of course it's a gift for for Samsung and and Xiaomi.
12:41
Xiaomi especially, right? Their stuff is like cloned. Mhm. Yeah. Like like you know pin outs
12:46
for all the chips on the circuit boards and stuff like that. like crazy stuff. Um uh who's in charge of that FCC?
12:53
They're not doing a very good job. But uh uh the the these new leaks confirm Apple's work on a successor to the uh
12:59
Vision Pro that we've been hearing about. The current Vision Pro ships with an M2 chip. The updated model will
13:04
feature an M5 processor. So, sounds like it'll have a big big jump in performance
13:10
there. It'll definitely put that GPU to good use. Uh, notably the testing
13:16
documents indicate the headset will continue using Wi-Fi 6 rather than upgrading to Wi-Fi 7 as there's no
13:22
evidence of 6 GHz Wi-Fi support. That'll be sad for all seven people who are
13:27
going to buy that. Uh, the timing of this leak suggests a potential announcement could arrive soon, possibly
13:34
at an October or November event, uh, where Apple might also unveil M5 powered Macs and iPads. They they reference uh
13:41
model numbers for an unreleased MacBook Pro likely featuring Apple's M5 chip and
13:47
the uh iPad Pro variants that we've just heard about that were, you know, actually leaked uh both 11 and 13inch
13:53
models and Wi-Fi and cellular. Uh interesting, while the M5 iPad Pro models appear to support Wi-Fi 7, the
14:00
MacBook Pro doesn't. So, my theory about this is that the new iPad Pro is going to get Apple's N1 chip for Wi-Fi,
14:07
Bluetooth, and like Thread Radio support, and that's why that has Wi-Fi 7, but my guess is that the MacBook Pro
14:13
won't, and so it'll be stuck on Wi-Fi 6. Why would they uh not put it in the
14:20
MacBook Pro? Maybe it wasn't designed with that product ready yet. I don't know. Yeah,
14:25
I mean I imagine the MacBook Pro probably has a longer lead time because it has to get the uh M5 Pro and Max
14:32
chips and so maybe it was designed before the N1 chip was ready. I don't
14:38
know. Just a theory. Yeah. FCC filings typically appeared just a few weeks before a product launch
14:44
indicating Apple may be preparing announcements for the coming months. you know, with this document being leaked
14:49
indicates that the MacBook Pro might actually be coming this fall after all rather than the following spring.
14:55
Oh, I see. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that's what it looks like, doesn't it? I mean, if this all this stuff is queued
15:00
up. This looks like what they're going to This is the Isn't this the October event lineup where basically? Yeah, pretty much. I'm not sure if there
15:07
will be event. I I think we're probably in for another series of uh press releases. Press releases. Yeah. Especially since
15:14
last month's event was, you know, the iPhone event, but they they honestly
15:19
like breezed through it. It was super quick over and out. I wonder if Apple's, you know, sort of realizing that people
15:25
are getting tired of the event videos and maybe they're dialing them down a little bit.
15:30
I don't know. I thought they had I thought they were getting record numbers when they when they had millions and millions of people that tuned in for
15:37
Well, at least for the iPhone one anyway. Yeah. Yeah. But, you know, they they kept it quick, you know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. More mercifully. Thank
15:43
you. Thank you. Thank you, Tim. God.
15:49
Yeah. Looks like quite a lineup of stuff, isn't it? I mean, that that Apple's churning this stuff out fast and furious. You mean and I mean, the good
15:55
news, I think, for cheap skates like me is that you can get the the older ones, you know, they I mean, like the M1 now,
16:02
the M1 MacBook Air or M2 MacBook Air, even the uh you know, they're super
16:08
cheap these days, aren't they? And they're still like great machines. So, if you're looking for a bargain, I mean, you go get the the previous version.
16:14
Yeah. Oh, I guess also interesting, uh, unmentioned in this FCC report is the rumored, um, A17 powered MacBook that
16:22
was going to be, you know, much cheaper. Not mentioned in here, so maybe that's not coming out until next spring,
16:29
right? I thought that was the rumor anyway, wasn't it? But I guess I guess it's confirmed not to be coming this year.
16:34
Yeah. Right. Yeah. What's going on over there? I mean, all these leaks. I mean, this is I guess everything everything
16:41
this year that Apple's released has been leaked, isn't it? Or is going to release has been leaked. I mean, the iPhone 17
16:48
lineup, that was all well known. Almost everything, wasn't it? Pretty much the only surprise was the uh
16:54
the square sensor in the camera. Oh, on the on the selfie one, the the front camera. Mhm.
17:01
Yeah, there weren't many surprises at all. It's a leaky It's a leaky boat over there. What's Tim Cook? Come on. What's
17:06
going on? Steve Jobs is This much is out of his control. That's just the FCC. Like,
17:12
you can't do anything about that. Yeah. I I wonder if he's going to call up Trump and start berating him on the
17:19
phone. I braiding him by giving him another million dollar donation. Yeah, I think a gold trophy.
17:24
I think not. Uh anyway, let's talk about the Vision Pro, which is I mean there's a there's a bit of a shakeup here. Uh
17:32
right, Lewis? Yeah. Yeah. This this report just came out this week. Uh supposedly Apple
17:38
executives told employees last week that they're putting the brakes on the development of a lighter, cheaper
17:45
version of the Vision Pro. Uh supposedly Apple was going to release
17:50
this by 2027, but now it's like, "Oh jeez, let's stop working on that. let's start working on smart glasses because
17:58
uh you know this little company called Meta keeps turnurning out smart glasses and they're they're apparently uh
18:05
becoming popular and Apple is still like years away from releasing one. Right.
18:10
So, and Meta just came out with their first one with a screen that's apparently getting good reviews. The what's it called? The Meta Ray Band
18:17
display. Yeah. Yeah. I get confused with all the product names, but uh yeah, they they
18:23
just came out with that. It's a $800 thing. You know, of course, apples will be twice that much at least. Uh once
18:28
they met subsidizing them, aren't they? I mean, these are being sold at below cost, right? That's what I read. It's it's
18:34
like doesn't even that doesn't even cost it doesn't even cover the cost of development of the hardware.
18:40
But, uh let's see. Uh I mean, Vision Pro has always been like a stepping stone to the smart glasses, right? I mean Tim
18:46
Cook was talking about this I don't know maybe 10 years ago or something how uh you know augmented reality glasses
18:53
that's the future and uh the problem is like the technology doesn't exist right now to do it the way Apple wants to do
18:59
it which will be you know the best ever like they did with the vision pro which
19:04
so they come out with a $3500 headset that's the best that nobody can
19:09
afford or wants to wear very long. Well, they they are parting in the software because what I've seen from the meta
19:15
stuff, I mean, it looks just like it's a it's a it's a ripoff of of um of vision OS, you know, it looks almost exactly
19:20
the same same kind of, you know, interaction model, uh very similar looking menus and navigation and, you
19:28
know, I mean, like Apple, even though everyone's dissing the Vision Pro, it's it's setting the vision, isn't it, for
19:34
AR and and VR? Well, it's I mean, it's always been that, right? This is this is the best
19:40
device. Everybody, nobody says it's bad. Everybody says it's great. Uh, it's just
19:45
expensive and heavy and, you know, socially awkward and there's not that much immersive content, right? I mean, Apple's started to release some more of
19:52
that lately or they they laid out their plans for the stuff they're going to release, but but it's I mean, that's still the best
19:58
use for it, right? I mean, watching movies or watching immersive content.
20:03
Apple's trying to push it as like a productivity thing, trying to get uh enterprise businesses to use it. But
20:10
well, we have Mr. Vision Pro productivity right here, Griffin Jones, who you know, when was the last time you put it on?
20:16
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's the thing. I've I've had to do more work that's required my computer. So, I haven't been able to use it because I don't have
20:22
Final Cut Pro on the Vision Pro. I don't And you know, WordPress, which is the thing that I write all of my articles
20:28
in, that's been kind of broken on Vision OS as of last I checked. So, I was like, "Well, I can't do that anymore." So,
20:34
please don't tell me you're writing in the CMS. Oh my god. No, I I I do writing in Marsdit, which
20:39
is another excellent Mac app that isn't available on the mission pro. So, right. Yeah. Adds a bunch of dodgy code
20:45
to your stories, but popping that. It's just a non-breaking space. I I
20:50
don't think it's a big deal. Uh let's see. So, I guess we should give credit where credit's due. I know you
20:56
hate this later, but that scoop about the delay comes from German who cites uh
21:01
people with knowledge of the matter, anonymous sources, of course. So, uh he also gave kind of an update on where
21:07
Apple's at with getting smart glasses happening, and this is this is a direct quote from him. The company is working on at least two types of smart glasses.
21:14
The first one, dubbed N50, will pair with an iPhone and lack its own display. Apple's aims to unveil this model as
21:19
soon as next year ahead of a release in 2027. Apple's also working on a version
21:24
with a display, something that could challenge the just released meta rayband display. The Apple version had been
21:30
planned for 2028, but the company is now looking to accelerate development. So, the story here is that they're
21:36
pulling the engineers off of the cheaper Vision Pro product or, you know, killing that and then hoping if they throw more
21:42
engineers at it, they can get it done faster, which Yeah, makes sense. Yeah. So, what is it? The one without the if
21:48
it doesn't have a screen, what will it have? Cameras, speakers? Yeah. I mean, that's what like the the first version
21:55
of the meta glasses was, right? It's just like basically just a camera and speaker. Yeah.
22:00
Yeah. So, I I really don't understand why anybody would strap a pair of
22:05
glasses on for those features. Uh I wear glasses every day for the past god knows
22:11
how many decades. And uh if I didn't have to wear glasses, no way would I.
22:16
So, I can't imagine wearing it just to have like a you know, mediocre camera on my forehead.
22:21
Yeah. But who's going to buy these things? Nerds and Apple enthusiasts who like 90% of which already wear glasses.
22:28
Well, if if if they come up a way where the prescription uh like if I could if I
22:34
could have a zoom in in my glasses so I could actually see the where the dart landed in the board, I would 100% go for
22:41
smart glasses. Yeah, that that's a feature that they've just built into Vision OS 26. They have
22:46
a new accessibility feature where you can have like a like magnifi floating magnifying glass in the center of your vision that's zoomed in.
22:52
Wow. So a bionic eye. Yeah. Yeah. And you know presumably Does it do that?
22:57
The the version with the display that could that that could have that too. Whoa. That sounds really cool. Have you
23:03
played with that? I haven't yet. No. I'm going to strap mine on right after this. It's right up there because it's
23:08
on it's on it's not charged up. But yeah remedy that an hour after that.
23:15
Yeah, that's a really cool idea. That's a very very cool idea for really good use case. I don't know having a camera.
23:20
Remember the whole glass hole thing though? I mean, do you think it's going to fly? You know, there's there's going to be a lot of social backlash. I think
23:28
even if it does, even with an Apple product, I I think Google Glass took the fall so that Meta can like pick up the baton and
23:34
keep going because, you know, they these meta glasses have been incredibly popular even though they're basically just a camera and headphones that just
23:41
blast sound around your ear. Have you actually ever seen one in real life though? I mean, no. I mean, maybe I have my
23:48
normal glasses. Right. That's the thing. Like I The thing with Google Glass was it looked like something out of a '90s sci-fi
23:54
movie, right? So, you walk in with this weird offcenter. I don't whatever. I don't
24:00
remember exactly what they looked like, but they weren't like normal glasses. Those Ray-B bands look like normal old Ray-B band. We would There's no I I mean
24:06
I think they have a a light that comes on when they're they're recording so that supposedly you can tell if
24:12
someone's recording you, but uh I don't know. I don't know if I've ever seen anybody wearing them.
24:18
Yeah, I haven't I haven't seen Not that I know of. Anyway, yeah. What happens when the battery swells and it and it
24:23
crushes your skull? That was the problem with the with the the Samsung smart rings. Oh, I hear that. That was a horror show
24:29
tweet, that guy, right? Yeah. the in case listeners haven't heard, Samsung has like this new smart
24:34
ring out and because it's Samsung, the battery started swelling. But the thing is you they're swelling to the point
24:41
where you can't take it off your finger, but also you have to be you can't just cut it off either because like 75% of
24:47
the way around inside the ring is battery and you can't just slice through a battery or it'll explode and cut your finger off.
24:53
So it's like a special part that you have to cut off like absolutely. How did the guy get it off in the end?
24:58
He got it. Well, they wouldn't he the it uh it the story broke because he wasn't allowed on an airplane, was he? The the
25:05
the uh the the uh the um the stewards stopped him boarding the aircraft with
25:10
this potentially explosive ring. How did he get off? He got off in the end though, didn't they? They took him to an ER and I think they
25:16
said that they put on like uh uh like fluid, some kind of like uh lubricant or
25:22
something, you know, like medical grade lubricant to get this thing off of him. Wow. Can you imagine?
25:28
But then they sent Yeah, I know. It could be pretty scary, especially if this thing keeps swelling. And then they um But then they sent him
25:33
a goodie bag, didn't they? They all kinds of Great. Here's one for each finger.
25:41
God almighty. Yeah. I mean, that is a bit of a worry, don't you think? Like having those batteries so close to your eyes and your
25:47
face. Well, well, glasses you can just pull off your face.
25:53
Yeah. Didn't Didn't um Oh, it reminds of that Mission Impossible movie. Tom Cruz had a pair of glasses, didn't he, that that
25:58
exploded when he uh actually got a message. He got a message from the IMF or whatever from inside his glasses and
26:04
then remember he took them off and threw them at the camera and then they exploded. That was 3D.
26:09
Uh I I don't I don't remember the branding, but it probably was Samsung. Yes, I think you're right. Yeah, this is that was the John Woo one. They
26:16
were I mean this is an old movie now, like 10 15 years old or more. But uh Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I I don't
26:23
know. You think it's exciting or what? this news here. I mean, it's it's not exciting if you're uh waiting for a
26:31
cheaper, lighter Vision Pro. I honestly think this might be a better strategy, though, because how cheap do
26:36
we really think Apple's quote unquote cheaper Vision Pro was actually going to be? $2,000, that's still enormously
26:42
expensive. like they they scrapped that for a product that's even, you know, to to accelerate an even lower-end model
26:49
that's, you know, actually more affordable and has been proven in the market to provide utility to people,
26:55
right? Way more useful. I think this is honestly a smart move. like, yeah, they'll keep making the the actual Vision the Pro Vision Pro. You
27:02
know, they they they've got one coming out next month, and I don't think they've yet scrapped the the all the the
27:09
full, you know, redesign of that one that's coming like a few years down the road. But, you know, 2027, 2028, or
27:16
maybe two models in 2027 that, you know, are glasses that people will actually buy and use for
27:22
$1,000, 1,500. That sounds like a good move. Yeah. I mean, the timeline on this has always seemed crazy to me. Like it when
27:29
the Vision Pro came out and they're talking about, oh, eventually they're going to have this augmented reality glasses kind of thing, but it was like
27:35
years away and and other people are already producing them and it's just it's like why can't Apple I mean I mean
27:40
I realize that maybe they just can't do you know everything, but they have so many resources. You would think that
27:46
they would have been able to accelerate this, you know, earlier.
27:51
Yeah. I mean, do you then chart it like Apple announced the vision pro and WWDC of 2023. So between 2023 and these, you
28:00
know, actually useful glasses with a display in them in 2028, that's a stretch of five years, which is just
28:07
crazy, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, they got the iPod. I mean, the first iPod was like six months of development, eight
28:13
months of development, nine, you know, very very short, very very short timeline. uh because you know much much
28:18
less complex product but still nonetheless I mean you know when they when they want it I it kind of reminds me of you know the whole smart speaker
28:24
thing with Alexa when Alexa blew up on uh with Amazon right and you know Apple was kind of
28:29
struggling a bit then wasn't it with the HomePod and the home uh to catch up and of course the HomePod was a huge
28:35
not a huge bust but it wasn't it wasn't a big success was it I think it's been a sleeper success
28:41
your point is is good though it's it like they seated so much ground they waited so long to get out their first
28:47
product that everybody already had Alexa all over their house and uh
28:53
and Apples was way overengineered and too expensive and broke. I mean, mine still work. My my original
29:00
HomePods still work. They still sound good. I mean, there's there are things that are great about that product, but
29:05
you know, and there's that guy in Seattle who can fix them, right? Well, well, I sent them I sent him mine
29:11
because I did the farting. was doing the the uh the the the HomePod fart and uh
29:17
60 bucks he he replaced a capacitor and I think it was all it was really and sent it back just a capacitor
29:22
I think so yeah it was just some one dodgy one dodgy uh electro component that tends to go yeah fantastic really
29:29
good uh really good service maybe the maybe the move is not to buy a HomePod mini but instead to buy a broken
29:35
HomePod on Facebook marketplace or eBay and then just for like 10 bucks send it to that guy for 60 bucks and he got a
29:41
fulls size HomePod Not a bad idea. Not a bad idea. I I love the HomePod. I mean, I think it's They sound better than any
29:47
of the Amazon speakers that I've tried. Even the bigger ones, you know, like my mom's got a Show 10 and that's got a
29:55
bigger speaker in it. And I don't know, the HomePods are way way better. I mean, with a with a with a stereo pair of HomePods, it is a viable
30:04
stereo replacement for for a living room stereo. And of course, it's smart. It sounds f
30:09
fabulous. Smart. at least for me. Well, yeah, my wife was complaining
30:15
about it. She keeps on getting all the remixes and stuff like that instead of the original artist. And she was she was
30:20
Oh my god, she went on a 40minute rant about it the other day. It happened to me last night on the way to darts. I'm trying to ceue up a song
30:28
and you know it's a song with like a long cumbersome name. Did I get it exactly right? No, maybe not. But uh
30:36
what what they played was comp like it had one word, right? One word. It's like
30:41
for some reason it just took one word and I did this two times in a row. I I requested this song and
30:46
Chumba wumba. No, it was uh God, I'm embarrassed to even say what it was, but uh but it it
30:54
What was it, Louis? There's this it's it's actually Here's the problem. It's two songs. It's by
31:00
this band called the Kings and it's called uh this beat goes on slash
31:08
switch into glide and then it's like radio cut or something like that or
31:13
radio mix. I I can't remember exactly what it is but you can see that's a lot of words, right? So I said
31:18
plus you can't even remember what song you want. I mean no one is I mean I said those those things like
31:24
that. Uh, you know, uh, I and first time I said it and second time I even said by
31:30
the Kings. Both times it played a song called Glide by some band I've never
31:36
heard of. It's just not even close, right? Not even close. So, um, it it
31:42
ought to be able to like make some judgments. I mean, you shouldn't have to say the exact title of a song.
31:49
Yeah. I I was trying to listen to um Obsession. You remember the AIS song? Yeah. It sounds like the human league,
31:55
but it's actually a different band. You're you're my obsession, my desire. Yeah, you right. And I couldn't remember
32:01
the name of the song and I and I couldn't remember I have no clue what the name of the band is. And uh on the
32:07
first attempt I said play obsession. It plays something completely different by a completely different band. But then I said play you're my obsession because I
32:13
remember that lyric and it came up with it. Really perfect. Yeah. I was What's the actual title of the song?
32:19
Obsession. Just obsession. But you got to you got to say but there's a whole bunch of songs that Obsession right has
32:24
been recorded like by a bunch of different artists and I have no clue what the name of the band is. Animotion.
32:31
Yeah. H Yeah. Well, I mean my experience with it is more times than not not very
32:38
accurate. If if you're at all wrong with the title, it it will not help you out.
32:45
It's like oh no, sorry, you're wrong. Here's something else you don't want to hear by a band that you've never heard
32:50
of, which, you know, granted I'm not up on the latest stuff. Maybe this was a
32:55
absolute hit hit track in the UK right now. I I would I would not know. I'm not privy to that information.
33:01
More than likely. More than likely. Yeah. And it's great for playing the radio and stuff like that. I I have nothing but a great experience with my with my HomePods. You know, I play the
33:08
London radio, play the play the BBC all the time, different radio shows, different podcasts. It's it seems to
33:14
work for me. I have no problem because I've got beautiful annunciation and correct English stuff, you know. So,
33:22
probably makes all the difference. That That's why your wife struggles with it. It's your homebot is waiting to hear
33:28
the king's English. Yeah, it might be. It might be. Oh my god. Uh well, she is it all day, too. Uh and
33:35
you know, from what I know, uh well, what am I saying? She she she was she
33:41
was she hates it. I mean, when it works, it's beautiful, right? But but I what I really hate was
33:47
when there are people who come over and they've they've they've never seen a HomePod. Those people still exist and uh
33:53
you try to, you know, just do something very basic and and you just end up looking like a jerk because this thing
33:59
just like can't do it. And you're like, "Oh god." You know, the fifth time you try and do it and it's like eventually just pick up your phone and and type in
34:07
what you wanted here and have it send it to the HomePod. Well, when smart when uh did you see the new Alexa ones? I mean,
34:13
Amazon just rolled out a whole bunch of new Alexa products, didn't they? And they and now had a smarter Alexa and I
34:19
saw um one review that was kind of mixed about the smarter Alexa saying, "Yeah, it was all right." You know, not that
34:24
great. Uh I haven't experienced it yet. Don't you have to pay for it too or does it come free with Oh, it comes free with
34:30
Prime, doesn't it? Uh I I'm not sure. I know that Alexa got uh upgraded on our devices and and my
34:37
wife hates the new voice. In fact, in fact, she was arguing with it like, "Hey, can you go back to the old voice?"
34:43
She's like, "No, I'm sorry. This is the new if you'd like. I can turn I can turn on the Australian version." You know,
34:48
it's like it's just it's not going back. It won't It refuses to go back to the
34:54
original voice. And my my wife is not pleased. Do you know what it does? What is it? What's it supposed to do to the new
34:59
smarter one? I don't know. I think it's supposed to have more conversational abilities like uh not just one specific interaction.
35:06
You can have like an extended series of interactions kind of like what Apple's promising with Siri.
35:12
Well, it is so kind of remarkable these things. My dad, you know, would have been delighted by this stuff. He died 20
35:19
years ago, but he would have he would have been blown away by these new technologies. He would have been like he
35:24
would have it would have blown his mind. It would have been, you know, incredible. He'd be posting AI slop on Facebook.
35:31
I mean, it's it's all very sci-fi, you know, but can you imagine like uh you know, Spock saying, you know, computer
35:37
do this and it like, you know, send this and thing is now launching missiles toward blah blah blah. It's like, you
35:43
know, if if Siri was in charge of Star Trek, I mean, there's been some genocides going on.
35:48
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, let's get in there. That's slowly. It's getting there. I started using um Siri a lot
35:55
more in my AirPods and that that that was something I I I hadn't used a lot before, but I've been trying to train
36:01
myself. Um and you know, I had pretty good pretty good experience with that. I
36:06
actually I did it I got it to do something really complex the other day. I can't remember what it was though, but uh I was really surprised. It worked
36:12
really pretty well. Like send a text, you know, it's good for sending a text to a specific person. Um that kind of
36:18
thing. You know, you can you can get it to do a chain of things. Fairly simple tasks that that work.
36:23
Pleased with that. Sure. Some things work. Yeah, sometimes.
36:29
All right, let's talk about the new This is the big Well, this is not the highlight of the show, but this is the
36:35
the almost the highlight of the show. We're going to talk about a new massive breakthrough in mousing. And this comes
36:44
from our favorite the only person who still uses a mouse on the team, Lewis.
36:49
What? Uh, you're mouseless? Yeah, I got a I've been trackpad. Trackpad trackpad forever.
36:56
I got a I got a trackpad sitting right here. It's probably not even charged up. I just like never use it. Love the
37:02
mouse. Love the MX mouse. Well, you know, with your RSI problems. I used to have RSI problems, too. You
37:08
know, my mouse would be my hand would be at the end of the day of using a mouse, it' be a horrible, you know, frozen
37:14
claw. You must have been using Apple's magic mouse instead of instead of this beauty.
37:19
I've had a you know, every mouse under the sun, including this MX MX, you know, the Logitech MX Master Mouse, which
37:25
which we're going to be talking about now. In fact, I've had two or three of those over the years. You haven't had this one? No, I haven't had this particular one,
37:31
but uh no problem, no RSI problems at all since moving to a trackpad. I I I you know, I think I I think you should
37:37
you should charge yours up, Louis, and give it a shot. But anyway, let's talk about the new Logic has got a new MXM 4.
37:43
They updated the mouse with with kind of like which is like what took so long, you know, for this this upgrade. Right.
37:48
Right. Yeah. The the the big addition is haptics. They've got a uh
37:54
a haptic sense panel embedded in the thumb rest of the new MXM 4. Uh it
37:59
delivers subtle Thank you for finally saying the actual product name that we're talking about. We get around to it. Uh, it delivers
38:04
subtle, purposeful vibrations that punctuate your interactions with the mouse. That sounds interesting. Uh, you
38:11
can enable feedback when your cursor moves between displays, when connecting or disconnecting devices, use it for app
38:17
specific functions like hitting layout guidelines in Adobe applications. That actually sounds awesome. I can't tell
38:23
you how I struggle sometimes to get things line up and and I hope that works in all kinds of applications, not just
38:28
Adobe. Well, you know, the thing is I get that on my trackpad because haptic interactions.
38:34
Yeah. Okay. All the time. All right. Well, I I don't recall ever hearing one or feeling hearing one.
38:40
Feeling one. Uh let's see. So, this thing came out this week. Big bombshell in the mouse world. I mean, and I'm I'm
38:46
sure it's going to be popular. I mean, these are like the most popular uh mice on the planet as far as I can tell. I
38:52
mean, everybody Well, they in the setups post we've been doing. I mean, it's like MX mouse. MX mouse. And it's more popular than than
38:58
than the Apple Magic Mouse. I you know. Well, for good reason. Yeah.
39:04
Yeah, that's true. Uh, you know, um, even on this the one I'm using, the MXM 3, which I've been
39:09
using for years. I mean, the the the the speed with which you can scroll down a
39:14
really long page is astonishing. The the like the way that the mouse or not the mouse, but the uh,
39:20
what do you call that little thing? Scroll wheel. Scroll wheel. There we go. the way that thing uh feels. It it kind of clicks
39:26
between things so you can move slowly, deliberately, or just like just race down a really long page. I mean, I I
39:33
love it. I don't know how people get by without it to be quite honest. Um this new one, uh Logitech claims two times
39:38
stronger connectivity. I haven't had any problems with connectivity with this mouse. 90% quieter clicks. Never noticed
39:44
that being a problem. Uh 70 days of battery life. That's a a pretty big boost. I think I have to uh probably
39:50
charge mine up like once a couple times a month at this point. Um
39:56
does it still do you still have to have a little um communicator, you know, with USB? No, they No, I think I when I wrote
40:03
about these things a long time ago. I mean, this is a while since this came out. Um you could get a regular version
40:09
with a dongle with like a USBA dongle and you can get a Mac version without one. And I was like, they're the same
40:15
price. Well, seems like it's better to just get the one with the dongle just in case, but uh the dongles are usually a little more
40:21
reliable than Bluetooth, especially if you have a, you know, desktop Mac and your Mac is actually far away from where
40:26
you keep your uh your your mouse. But, you know, they they have trade-offs. Yeah. I mean, if you wanted to use it
40:32
with a PC, maybe. I don't know. I mean, I remember using USBA port. Yeah. If you got a a MacBook, a recent
40:39
MacBook, you know, I I don't know. May maybe I I haven't actually looked at the specs on this. What does the dongle look
40:44
like on the MX4? Is it Is it still USBA? No, it must be a USBC. Surely,
40:49
you would think, but uh I don't know. I I wish I knew. I wish I'd checked that out before uh
40:56
started talking about it. Anyway, uh these mice really are super great. I I
41:02
mean, I feel about my mouse uh the same way I feel about my Apple Watch Ultra.
41:07
It's like I love it and it does everything I need it to do. And I also know there's like this whole other world
41:13
of stuff that I don't take advantage of because I'm, you know, too stupid to
41:18
figure it out or take the time to learn it or it's just new. And who who wants to learn something new? I don't mind
41:24
learning stuff new, by the way. But uh I I uh I started reading about this action rings thing that they've got in this,
41:30
which I guess works also with MX. I've never I've never tried it, but uh it's
41:36
it's Log this is what our post says. Logitech's answer for those who dislike repetitive cursor movements and menu
41:42
diving. The circular overlay appears anywhere on your screen when you press the haptic button, offering instant
41:47
access to files, folders, applications, and custom macros. Company claims users can reduce repetitive mouse movements by
41:53
up to 63% and save 33% of their time on common tasks.
41:58
So, I had never heard of this. I I just, you know, in the minute I had to prepare for the show, I did. It looks like that
42:04
works with uh the MXM 3 somehow. I I don't know if that's true or if that's just AI generated garbage, you know, in
42:11
the Google AI search results, but uh when I read about that, I'm like, "Oh, that sounds really cool." And then when I saw that works with my mouse, I'm
42:17
like, "What am I why haven't I tried this out?" So, uh more on that later, I guess. Good question, Louis.
42:22
More on more on that later. Well, let's talk let's talk about that next week. We can report back.
42:29
I I hope I can get my hands on one of these uh NX Master 4s because they uh sounds awesome. Sounds like a great
42:35
update to an already great device. Kind of like the Apple Watch Ultra 3. [Laughter]
42:42
Well, does anyone else do haptic feedback in mice? Have you ever seen a mouse with a with a with a haptic
42:47
engine? Not even Apple's does that. So, never heard of it. Doesn't mean it's there'sn't somebody
42:53
out there who's done it, but uh I haven't heard of it. Yeah, I I haven't been up in the world of mice for a long time, but um it seems
43:00
like kind of like you know what took so long. They've had it these kind of haptic engines in iPhones for what a
43:05
long a long while. Long time since the iPhone 6S. How do you remember that? My god.
43:14
He's got smart glasses on. I swear to God. Do you see him? He looked up to the upper left. He saw the
43:20
And how was it? That's 10 years old now, right? Yeah. Yeah. It does sound pretty awesome, but I'm not going to go back to mouse. Never.
43:27
I guess we should say uh it's available in four colors. costs $119.99.
43:34
What What are the colors? Oh god. Really?
43:39
Let's see. Uh uh rose gold. Jeez, I don't even see the colors
43:45
anyway. Orange. They have an orange. Here's a really exciting one. Pale gray.
43:51
Let's see. It's got to be a black one, I'm sure. USBC receiver. Oh, okay.
43:58
Oh, that's nice. graphite, uh, white silver. What? White
44:05
silver, and space black. Why are you saying this? On Amazon. And, uh, they right now
44:11
they're even they're going for over list price, which is exciting. $134.99 for the space black. So, that's nuts.
44:18
Yeah. Incredible negative savings. Yeah. Anyway, let's see. Yeah. Special offer
44:24
119 back order. Oh, the Mac one is not backordered on their site. Oh,
44:30
maybe they made they must have made more. Well, let's move on before this segment falls apart even more.
44:36
Thank God. Thank God for the editor. That's enough mouse mousing for today. Let's talk about um our how-to for this
44:44
week, which Griffin is going to show us. And this is how to do a folder quick look. So, we've all had this problem before.
44:51
You're in the Finder, you're previewing a bunch of stuff. you know, you hit the space bar, you can get a little preview
44:57
of your various uh, you know, files on your on your Mac desktop, but then you
45:04
accidentally hit a folder and all you get is a big preview of the folder icon
45:12
and the name of it. Kind of useless, not as, you know, handy as clicking all of clicking all these files. you know, you
45:18
could get a nice beautiful preview of images and, you know, play movies and
45:23
uh, you know, text documents, but then you hit a folder and it's kind of useless. Well, there's a new Mac app
45:29
that was just released. I believe it's for Mac OS Tahoe called Folder Quick Look. Um, it's free on the Mac App
45:36
Store, data not collected, so it's not spying on all of your folders. Uh, it supports a bunch of accessibility
45:42
features, I guess. Um, actually, let's see what the compatibility is. Oh, it
45:47
actually runs on Mac OS Sequoia as well, 15.6 or later. So, it's completely free.
45:53
You download it. Only takes a moment because it's only 18 megabytes. And this
45:58
instantly fixes folder quicklook. Now, when you quick look a folder, you can
46:04
see a whole list view inside and see its whole contents. Uh, so you can sort by name, um, you know, date
46:11
modified, you know, the these are interactive as well. sort by size, preview, preview all these folders and
46:17
suddenly you get a whole list view. It even shows you the file path below it. So, uh, super handy. I I really
46:24
recommend everybody try this out. This uses like a feature called a quick look extensions. So, you know, when you
46:31
install Photoshop, you can get a preview of like Photoshop files or, you know, when you install Microsoft PowerPoint, you get a better preview of PowerPoint
46:37
files. All this does is it builds a little u quick look extension for, you
46:43
know, the the finder so you can get a quick look inside of your folders. You
46:48
know, no reason not to download it. Honestly, I think this is a new essential app that that I would
46:53
recommend everybody get. Um, super handy. Just came out this week, right? Yep. Just came out this week
46:59
from an independent developer named My Turn to Stump Griffin.
47:04
Uh, I did not look up that information. I have to bring it back up again. Uh,
47:10
the developer is listed as app ahead. GMBBH.
47:16
Ah, from Germany. Fold a quick look. Yeah, that's pretty handy. It's from Martin.
47:23
Martin. There we go. Apphead Studio. It's completely free, huh? There's no uh like
47:30
no inapp purchases, no no purchase price. All free. So, that's a solid recommend.
47:35
Mhm. I wonder if Dave uses it on his killer standing desk,
47:43
which is so this here's the real highlight of the show. Thank god we finally got to it.
47:50
This is our setup section where we're going to be talking about um the desk that is used by one of the cult writers,
47:56
Dave Snow. Uh and he just got this um he's he's been doing a lot of tinkering
48:01
with his setup and changing things around. He's actually I mean because Dave writes setup posts. He actually has
48:07
setup posts going back through his history of his setup starting when he like just first started writing for us
48:12
and was writing on like some crummy Dell laptop on a just a pile of stuff on a desk. You
48:19
know, he's he's he's really turned him his own workstation around here. Oh wow. We should do that. We should we
48:25
should contrast with like how far he's come. Look how far he's come. I mean look at this thing. For those that can't
48:30
see this, we're looking at a straight ahead picture of this um really nice looking standing desk. It looks like it
48:36
has a bamboo top uh made out of or or it's a at least veneered with bamboo. It
48:42
looks it has a different treatment at the front um to the rest of the desk, but it looks a really nice big desk. And
48:49
he has got uh his MacBook Pro. I think that's a 14inch MacBook Pro, which he bought. I don't know. Is it an M4?
48:55
He wrote about that, too. An M4. And that is a 14 in and it's attached to a a very nicely.
49:01
Any idea what that monitor is? What is the monitor? Oh, it's two. He's got two 5K a logic clarity displays on monitor
49:07
arms that actually might be the 16 inch because looking at zooming in and looking at the grill, it looks like the grill around the keyboard is a little
49:13
wide. So, I apologize. I I can't really tell.
49:19
Oh my goodness. Well, we we'll we'll we'll we'll look into that afterwards. But these Alogic
49:25
these these Alogic uh monitors are super nice, aren't they? These are these are definitely um alternatives to the uh
49:32
Apple Studio Display. These are 6K. Um they're a lot cheaper, too. I think Sorry, not 6K.
49:39
Oh, okay. Yeah, bigger one. 5K. So, um Dave reviewed these as well and he likes them. One of them is in in he's got one
49:46
in landscape, one in portrait up to the side and then of course he's got the the uh the MacBook screen and he's got these
49:51
two nice uh bookshelf speakers or computer speakers. At first he he he
49:57
ordered an under desk shelf. He likes putting the open MacBook Pro up on his desk and that was mostly so that he can
50:04
get the Touch ID or at least it's it's useful for doing Touch ID. It's a no-brainer there. Um oh they're Edifier MR3 speakers.
50:13
Edifier makes really nice stuff. Um, he's got this thing called Uplifts glass desk blot. What's that?
50:19
It's just like a little glass plate. Looks like a like a you know a rather I
50:24
don't know how big it is. Looks like it's about 2 ft wide and like 18 inches deep. It's just like a big glass plate that you that he has his computer and
50:32
trackpad and mouse and everything sitting on top of so that uh I guess the any sweat from his palms doesn't
50:38
discolor the nicely varnished surface of his desk or anything. All right. Preserves it, you know, like like a
50:44
little placemat for his uh computer. I see. Got it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He has so I was looking at this. He has
50:50
just so many pointing devices. I mean, now that he has the MacBook Pro sitting open, uh he's got his MacBook Pro
50:57
keyboard and trackpad, another keyboard, another trackpad, another mouse, and a
51:03
palm rest with a built-in pointing device. So that's like six combined pointing devices all open on his desk
51:11
surface. Wow. Yeah. It's a Wobb key, which I I completely can't every time I look at that I I want
51:18
to say wobbly key. A wobbly rainy 75 mechanical keyboard. A Contour roller
51:23
mouse red wireless. Logitech MX Anywhere 3 mouse for Mac and a Magic Trackpad 2.
51:29
So, the Contour Roller Mouse Red Wireless is a really interesting device because I hadn't seen Dave reviewed this
51:35
and he is in love with this thing. It's supposedly an anti- RSI uh mousing device which
51:42
it's like a big leather wrist pad except in the center of it there's almost like one of those think pad like track point
51:49
things in the middle. So, uh or I guess it's more like a track ball. It's got like a little roller and like buttons
51:54
around it. But, uh it it also doubles as a wrist rest. So, you know, it's right between where your where your thumbs would be. Um, the the 75% keyboard
52:03
mechanical keyboard is a good addition cuz, you know, you get all the letter and number keys and page up and page
52:09
down and the arrow keys in a normal arrow key layout, but you don't have the, you know, number pad in the way.
52:15
So, it's, you know, minimal distance between your keyboard and mouse. But, right, he's he's just got way way way too many
52:23
things open. I know. Why? Why has he got a trackpad on the right and a mouse on the left and like you said the you know the thing in
52:29
the middle? He's left-handed. What's he using the trackpad for then? For all for all the gestures. So, he
52:35
gets the best of both worlds. He has the gestures on his trackpad and he also gets the uh left-handed mouse. And he
52:40
doesn't have the Logitech MXM 3 because I think that's explicitly a right-handed mouse, but he has the uh ambidextrous
52:46
one that's, you know, symmetrical on each side. I see. I I I have just a few little nitpicky
52:52
comments here. Here we go. Look, because uh he has so he has his his center monitor on a monitor stand,
52:59
but he doesn't have it high enough for the speakers to fit under that monitor, which then means that uh his two
53:05
monitors, like his vertical one is like it looks like there's a foot of distance between his two monitors. Like that's
53:11
just a huge gap. He's got to be like turning his neck all the way to the right to look at that that right monitor. Um, so I mean if I were him, I
53:19
would I would scooch that center monitor up, bring those speakers in, and bring the monitors a little closer together. Uh, his desk has a little, you know,
53:26
like the the hole in the surface that you're supposed to route the cables through. Uh, he hasn't done that.
53:32
They're a lot of cables are just like sort of the cable management is awful. Dave, he just has everything hiding behind
53:37
that MacBook Pro. Like the open MacBook Pro lid just hides like a string of cables falling to the ground.
53:43
Oh, that's You ain't seen the rat's nest. If you think that's a rat that it just looks like the ultimate pristine
53:50
cable management compared to the mess I got at my place. Yeah. And well and plus it's in it looks
53:55
like it's in a down position. So is Dave is are you really standing Dave? Is he
54:00
I think there's a different image in the post that has it in in the standing position. That's what's great about standing desk. Uh the little, you know, thing on the
54:06
right there. You make it go up, you make it go down. It's just, you know, so you have a varied stance throughout the day.
54:12
Well, I had a standing desk and I think I put it up once and then I put it down again and then I sat at it. Well, I mean my my recommendation is
54:19
like, you know, I always feel a little dangerous like raising and lowering a desk. What I did at my my my former job
54:25
when I actually had one of those, a real job. Imagine that. Uh I had them just permanently raise my desk, just like
54:32
install like longer metal legs on it. And then I just got a tall chair so I didn't have to move the desk. I could
54:38
just transition between standing and sitting by either sitting in my chair. How much? How much sitting?
54:44
Well, I I I didn't have to go through like a fiveminute ordeal of waiting for this mechanical thing to lower and like
54:49
mess up all my wires. I could just sit sit down or, you know, stand up. Clearly never used a standing desk.
54:55
Well, I I find standing it just hurt my back and I just felt more uncomfortable than my and then my bloody feet hurt and
55:00
so I just went back to slouching and and you know, I'm quite happy with that. So, do you stand now or sit? What's your
55:06
Well, that was my old job. Uh since I since I work from home and I I built this whole studio and the tables for
55:13
these, I now sit all the time. But yeah, right. You know, I alternate between uh sitting at my desk uh at my Mac and uh sitting
55:20
on my couch in the Vision Pro. So I've got a a combination sit setup.
55:27
Well, the couch. Yeah, that's um Yeah. At least it's comfy. Mhm. I I
55:34
You do you still stand, Leo? Yeah, most most all the time. sometimes like if I'm sick or tired or you know
55:41
particularly tired or something I'll sit down a little bit but uh yeah mostly standing. Um
55:46
any has it helped? I I think I feel way better all the time
55:52
in general than when I was sitting all the time. Well, now they say that like stationary standing isn't isn't good enough. You
55:58
need to be if you're standing at a standing desk, you need to have like one of those little little like walking pads like you know minimal track treadmills.
56:05
I don't think I'll be doing that. If you if you look at this company that uh Uplift, this company that Dave, you
56:11
know, got this standing desk review, uh they have one of these things. I I remember we had one of these back in Cult of Mac Office in the old days. I
56:17
don't know if it's the same company, but uh a bamboo motion X board. It's like
56:23
it's like a platform that you're supposed to stand on that has like probably circular thing on the bottom.
56:29
Yeah. curved bottom or I can't actually see this thing, but uh it you stand on it so that you're not completely like
56:35
stationary, right? It's like you kind of wobble wiggling throughout the day. Wobble. I I don't know.
56:43
I remember when that was in the office, I was just like I can't I can't get used to this. I can't uh I I understand like that
56:50
probably uh you know works your core makes It was like a burpee, wasn't it? Like
56:56
you know at the gym but a wooden version. I know. It hung around the office for about 10 years and no one ever used it and I finally
57:01
chucked it out. Wow. Uh if you want to nitpick about Dave's uh setup, look at that. He's got
57:07
that beautiful uh center of that desk. It it goes in um in slightly, right? But you a concave
57:16
front edge. And he's got the glass the glass thing that comes out over it.
57:22
Mhm. like uh you know, I don't know, like one of those uh things at the Grand Canyon where you walk out over the edge
57:27
of the Grand Canyon. Oh god, that horrible. Yeah, that viewing platform. Yeah. And know he's got this beautiful station
57:33
that's beautifully lit and then like immediately to the right of the desk is just like a chair with stuff on it and a
57:38
pile of stuff in the corner. So, uh Well, nothing's centered. The rug, you know, I didn't want to mention the rug, but
57:44
yeah, the rug. Well, he's going to hear this. He's going to come after us.
57:49
and and I mean his even his computer isn't centered on the the uh the desk, is it? It's all skewed off the wall.
57:55
It's centered with the the painting next to it because that the monitors are blocking. Well, I I think the point is Dave didn't
58:01
spend, you know, four days getting his uh his thing picture perfect so he can take that one perfect Instagram shot. He
58:08
actually uses his desk. And as you mentioned, I mean, it's been a quite a transformation over the years. It ain't.
58:14
And I mean, let's be honest, it ain't that easy to change things up, like change your desk, change all these things. I mean, you you kind of put
58:21
stuff in place and then you're like, "Wow, I really should have done this." And everything you do, like, I don't
58:26
know. I I find it tiresome. True enough. It's not a bad It's a nice setup. It's pretty clean. It's like, you
58:31
know, he's got what he needs and nothing more. Uh, looks effective.
58:36
Yeah, definitely. He's very productive, so that's true. It definitely works.
58:42
I'm really fascinated by so he he he just has like, you know, a presumably like safe uh image of his work that he
58:49
does. So he's got Slack on the external monitor, but then he has like these two windows to the right on his right
58:56
monitor that just look like text edit windows. One of them has like a big table in it. One of them is like some
59:02
text document. I can just barely not read it. And that's really frustrating to me. I really want to know what's on what he has on those screens. Like is
59:09
that like a planning document where he plans articles? he's writing or I don't know. It's fascinating.
59:14
Instructions from MI5. Yeah. But then he has like he has nothing on his MacBook screen on the
59:20
bottom like and it looks like he's writing in the CMS. Mhm. I'm sure he's just copied it into there.
59:27
Big no. No. Of course. I do it every time.
59:33
All right, let's move on. Let's talk about uh the question. And this week we have a great question comes from Rob on
59:38
Macedon. Griffin, what's his question? Uh, he wrote to me in a in a DM personally to get his question on the
59:43
show. He writes, "I'm disappointed. How did you not give LK crap for buying the
59:48
Pro again?" Again, lol. He swore he'd get a standard or the Air. I've signed
59:54
up for Masttodon specifically to ask you this. PS. Love the show still. Zero
59:59
Glistener. I think he intended to write OG, but uh he wrote zerog, so I guess he's listening in space on the
1:00:05
International Space Station. Zero Glistener. But at least he loves the show despite
1:00:11
our complete inconsistency and total waffling and just making stuff up as we
1:00:16
go along. Well, like I said to Griffin earlier on like uh I I I have only a
1:00:22
very vague memory of these promises that I made. I remember talk about this. I I remember calling it you're going to
1:00:28
buy whichever phone is the last one Apple talks about and they ended on the Pro and that's ended up that's what
1:00:34
Oh, is that the reason why? Well, the the real reason I did it is because, you know, when we were planning out the
1:00:40
release schedule and what people were reviewing, the the one that no one was getting was the regular Pro. Like the
1:00:45
Pro Max had already been taken, the Air had been taken, the regular phone had been taken. So, I I sacrificed really
1:00:51
for the sake of this, you know, this this uh this organization. I I was forced to buy this Pro when I really
1:00:59
wanted to get something else. Actually, I would have been happy with any of them really, to be honest. Um uh but I I I I
1:01:04
now that I do have the Pro, I'm actually quite happy that I got the Pro. Um the cameras are amazing. You know,
1:01:11
that they really do make a difference, but I would have been I would have been happy with the with the regular one. I'm pretty sure. Yeah. So, sorry, Rob.
1:01:18
Um I hope this explanation satisfies makes sense.
1:01:23
Okay. Well, you said you Oh, everybody else is signing up for you. You haven't written any reviews so far. It's not
1:01:28
like you're going to write up a review of the the regular pro. Well, hold on. I wrote a review of the I wrote a review of the tech woven case
1:01:34
which I haven't published but I have kind of written it. No, I didn't. Didn't I write a review? I
1:01:40
re reviewed I wrote something. You wrote blurbs about all the reviews that we wrote for the newsletter.
1:01:46
Yeah. Anyway, um well, this is I have a huge, you
1:01:52
know, media empire to run. can't be um you know uh digging into reviews
1:02:00
that um plus I'm terrible at them.
1:02:06
So anyway, it's a mercy that I stayed away from the reviews. Anyway, well, thanks Rob for listening to the show and
1:02:11
thanks for signing up on Macedon too. Hope you enjoy Masedon. You and Griffin and three other people can uh talk about
1:02:17
it. Uh anyway, I think that's let's wrap it
1:02:23
up there. That's all the uh podcast we have for you this week. Thanks so much for listening.
1:02:29
If you want to hear more, Lewis is on Twitter, Lewis Wallace. Griffin's on Macedon and Blue Sky at dgriffinjones.
1:02:36
And uh I write the cultmack today newsletter, which um you can find at newsletters.cultmack.com. And highly
1:02:41
recommend you sign up for that. It's a great way to get all of the cultmack goodness in your inbox every day. It's a
1:02:47
fab newsletter. It's a really great way to to, you know, to to to see our content. And we have all these amazing
1:02:53
features too in the newsletter like um tweets of the day. Baby, daily Steve Jobs quote and a daily
1:03:00
poll which is my favorite part. I love the daily poll. Yeah, people love the polls. The polls the polls do great and the and and the
1:03:05
comments or the commenting system is horrible but um if you if you leave a comment I mean we always put the reader comments in at the at the bottom. Yeah.
1:03:11
And the polls always get a lot of you know they're popular. People like the polls. Um Lewis and I should do a better
1:03:18
job of dreaming them up. Um, apart from that, we uh, yeah, the polls. Oh, and
1:03:24
uh, wallpaper of the day. That's a great one. I like that. No one else seems to like it, but I do. So, it's in there.
1:03:30
Anyway, send us a send us, uh, you know, a text link. Send us at the top of the show notes or on YouTube comments.
1:03:35
That's a good way. Or even sign up for Masteron. Um, uh, if a couple of people sign up, you could double the double the
1:03:41
user numbers there on that platform overnight. Uh, and send us your comments. You know, we'd love to we'd love to answer your questions. Well,
1:03:47
that's been the Cult, the best hourong conversation you're going to hear all week long. New episodes of the Cult come out every Thursday night. And we want to
1:03:55
thank you for listening and we'll catch you all next time. Have a great weekend, everybody. Goodbye. See you.
1:04:02
All right, cool. That wasn't so bad. Yeah. And did we bring it in on time?
1:04:08
Uh, I have an hour and 10 minutes, so you know. Okay, not too bad. On time.
