oh my go I think it's getting worse you know there there are other
0:08
ways you can start the show yeah LS you say something
0:15
encouraging maybe like a did you know Apple tip you know a Zen thought
0:23
yeah sounds great you know that the apple is the
0:28
same as the uh what's it called I should have been better
0:34
prepared for this oh video that's it I don't even have a flipping tweet lined up we are even more disorganized
0:42
than usual we're probably live that's okay I'll just fill it up with more obscure Apple trivia did you know that
0:48
the Macintosh Plus doubled the capacity of the floppy disc compared to the original Macintosh oh God 4K to
0:56
800k I think I remember that that's sad
1:02
probably happened right right right when I was like getting my first computer I do remember a point at which the
1:10
floppies got more space and what's the deal with the floppies 800k and then
1:15
1.44 megabytes they called the floppies floppy but then they had hard Diss and
1:22
then those were called floppies and the other floppies are just still floppies everything was floppy at that point but
1:28
not all the discs were floppy what's the deal with the Flop hang on all right well he's got one
1:35
back there we got Dave Lynch in the chat that one's for you Dave we got a properly floppy floppy disc right here
1:41
an actual floppy oh yeah man I remember those it's
1:47
crazy it's crazy big sleeve that it goes oh yeah of course got to keep it clean the dust
1:53
sleeves and now now
2:01
we got this look at this enormous ridiculous iPad
2:08
13inch I don't know man I don't know if I can do it I mean I love this thing I
2:14
really do actually love using this thing but I'm sorry about all the all the uh oh the camera just turned on that's
2:20
weird um yeah if only someone had warned you repeatedly but it's B hey look I did
2:25
my due diligence hey you can see you guys look at that I um I went to the Apple Store so many times and I went
2:30
back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and from a from just like a using an iPad in your lap experience
2:36
and editing photos and stuff and it's just you know awesome to have this much space but it is shocking how much of a
2:44
difference in size and I said all this stuff last week the 13 is the the 13 inch is over the 11 inch and and using
2:52
this thing in bed it's like my face being blasted with all the light from
2:57
this thing you know I bar fall asleep I'm looking Insomniac now uh and like
3:03
holding it in bed is just comically you know absurd it's like I can barely hold this thing up um I don't know man it as
3:13
much as I love having the extra screen real estate what you lose in wield ability and portability I just don't
3:19
know if I can do it I'm I have I'm giving myself one more week I might keep it I might keep it cuz like when you are
3:25
doing things with photos and stuff you know I the experience is incredible with all the real estate but dude I mean just
3:32
holding this thing just look at this thing look how big it is and it's so crazy how the form factor uh and the way
3:41
the screen is mounted makes such a huge difference cuz like this on a 13-inch MacBook Pro it feels too small for me
3:49
but you pull the screen off the keyboard and you got to just hold the screen and now all of a sudden I'm like this is way too big I want love the difference in
3:55
the the aspect ratios makes a big difference in like how big it actually is like it's it's bigger by like you
4:01
know sare in you know yeah you're right cuz like the I think isn't the isn't the
4:06
air 16 by9 I actually don't know the Mac all MacBooks I think are 16 by9 now or like
4:13
a little bit taller than slightly taller than 16 by9 but this is 3x4 you know it's like yeah a lot a lot wider so I
4:22
don't know I'm going to give it another tisy do from the chat I've dropped my 13-inch iPad Pro on my face
4:29
so so many times yeah I I I'm kind of worried that if I do that I'm going to wake up with a bloody nose it's just
4:35
amazing how see these small changes like two extra inches you know four extra ounces can drastically change the user
4:42
experience so much so that I'm like I don't even know if I want to keep this thing I might have to go back to the 11
4:47
in the 11 inch I don't I don't love it for
4:53
productivity but for portability and just using it in bed it is just like absolutely perfect I think what you have
4:59
to do is you need to go back to the Apple store and pick up an 11 in and if it feels too small I mean after you're
5:06
used to the 13 I still have my 11 in because I have my 2018 um iPad Pro so
5:13
true I don't know but I just you you you can't no one can describe to you how big
5:20
this thing is and how much different it is until you use it and then you're like I guess when you when you pick up your
5:25
2018 iPad Pro does it feel small or does it feel like H this is just right uh I have haven't touched it since I got this
5:30
to be honest with you so how many drinks can you fit on that like it hold about
5:36
six you're wine sir oh yeah for an experienced server do probably do s you probably
5:42
could do six I mean that'd be a tight squeeze man I think you'd be better off at four to be honest but anyway I digress so we'll see
5:50
if I keep it um but absolutely loving the 14-inch MacBook Pro absolutely
5:57
loving it and um you know people are saying it overheats all the time I haven't really stressed
6:02
it yet but mine my fans literally never come on for just regular usage I love having like the four efficiency cores
6:09
versus the two that I had on my um M1 Max and uh dude that anti-reflective
6:14
treatment on the screen oh my gosh the Nano texture I I mean like it just it just
6:20
melts you don't even know that it's there until you see that there's like a diffuse light behind you or something so
6:26
far absolutely love it but that's not what we're here to talk about well interestingly I don't see any new videos
6:31
from you I'm I'm checking my RS you you know what else we're not seeing is any
6:37
podcasts supposed to be out yesterday that's true oh don't you worry
6:42
don't you worry I've got some videos piped in they're in the pipe it's a long
6:47
pipe though I can't barely even see like the end it's like a little tiny pin dot you know with the light at the end but anyway um should we go ahead and get
6:55
this thing rolling we actually have a lot of stories to do God it's almost I know five o'clock
7:01
oh miss Co my dear did somebody say pipe oh no
7:09
Mrs de would stop you right there L don't encourage her Lis we got a
7:15
lot of Apple stories to do and we got not very much time to do them and it's
7:20
Friday and this show is already 24 hours late more so um than 24 hours late so we
7:27
should probably go ahead and just you know get the show over with um I mean create 26 now entertaining
7:33
production for you all to enjoy over the weekend we'll see if anyone listens to it over the weekend I don't know um let me go ahead and get things uh queued
7:42
up and we'll get the show rolling see I
7:47
think we got everything we need I certainly hope so but there's no going back now and three two
7:56
one hello and welcome to the co Cassy best 30 plus minut Apple conversation
8:01
you're going to hear all week long I'm your host air Legend join me today the crack of his knuckles is often the last
8:06
sound riters remember before awaking days later in the San Francisco hospital room thankfully there RAR there's rarely
8:12
permanent damage but the forehead imprint of his pinky ring takes weeks to go away he's the managing ENT of C mat
8:18
oh L WS is here no pinky ring no pinky ring ah you took it off for the show uh
8:26
let's see here uh some people use fans or white noise to sleep but he says there's nothing like the relaxing sounds
8:31
of an apple image writer Matrix printer calm the nerves and send them right to La La Land writer for
8:38
C Morin Jun is here good evening I know this
8:44
podcast is a daylight and I'm sure we'll address that maybe but um I would like to apologize that uh my Cult of mac
8:51
Apple Financial earnings call live streamon was canceled yesterday sadly
8:56
the the gymnasts that I hired came down with lepr wow wow and just wouldn't be a cult of
9:02
mac Apple Financial earnings call live streamon without live gymnastics
9:08
lepry I'm I'm told they were uh shipped off to a leper colony I believe on an island in Fiji wow you know they have
9:14
any box that treat that now you should have let them know Well fun fact and this is true it's actually the same island that they shoot the love Island
9:22
TV show on so on one half of the island you have the the love Island and then the other part is a Lecy Island
9:30
is there is there actually a leprosy Colony still I have no idea I was like it seems like there shouldn't be but hopefully if
9:38
there is the participants of Love Island will catch it all right well look sorry we're late
9:46
um my fault I had some stuff going on this week and I was like I just I just absolutely cannot record this on a Thursday so here we are on a Friday
9:53
afternoon with uh this week's best alaur and you know what is that so bad I kind of prefer to have the ex extra time just
10:00
in case anything pops up which in today it actually did we have much better stories to talk about today yeah right
10:06
so I'm like maybe we should move it to Friday I just don't know if anyone will listen to it or watch live if we do it
10:12
on Friday but I guess we'll see um let's see here what are we talking about this week I have no idea because my notes
10:18
have completely disappeared oh yeah so we have got some bad news maybe Apple
10:24
has if you had any hope for the Steve Jobs Heritage Edition glasses glasses
10:29
they're officially dead now looks like apple has decided that ar ar glasses is
10:35
just not a possibility well the story is not all that it seems and we'll get to that oh great teasing also LS is going
10:41
to mind meld us I mean mind melt us stats from Apple's Bonkers um earnings
10:47
call only the interesting stuff he's assured us um it must have been great
10:52
because Apple stock is down again which is what I feel like always happens it works right what's that it's way it
10:59
works right I know because they announce Apple intelligence something that no one will actually ever use skyrockets
11:05
earnings call Bonkers earnings absolutely ah you only had the most profitable quarter in the history of the
11:10
world of business and no that's not good enough unbelievable uh let's see here oh
11:16
looks like apple has a plan to finally I know we've said this before I think this actually might be it to finally fix Siri
11:22
and apple intelligence H we shouldn't even put those in the same sentence together to be honest but um hopefully
11:27
this is the Real McCoy for for Siri because I've I've all but lost hope yes
11:33
carplay 2 is still coming out um Griffin's going to talk about that Lewis is going to show us the most bananas
11:39
case iPhone case ever made leave it to LS to find the good stuff all that and
11:46
plenty of tangents probably lots of bad jokes and at least one or two derailments on this week's episode
11:52

14:32
In This was it this was the store we always knew would come Apple has
14:38
officially killed any hope of AR glasses but the question is why Griffin's here
14:45
to tell us all about it look how sad he is well may not be any hope let's see um
14:51
Apple suddenly discontinued development of its lightweight AR glasses project this week according to a new report this
14:58
marks another adjustment and the company's pursuit of mainstream Weill technology the product the project known
15:04
internally as n107 aimed to create normall looking glasses with built-in displays that would connect to Mac
15:11
computers Apple's decision to end the AR glasses project came after multiple design interations and Technical
15:16
challenges according to Bloomberg sources familiar with the matter U as reported on by uh shark Burman uh unlike
15:24
the Vision Pro these glasses would have been lightweight enough to wear without a headstrap and wouldn't have included the eyesight
15:31
display on the outside initially conceived to pair with iPhones the team encountered issues with
15:38
processing power and battery life limitations a pivot to Mac connectivity aimed to leverage more powerful
15:44
processors in larger batteries but the prototypes performance fell short during executive reviews however Apple
15:50
continues to develop Vision Pro successors and maintains other Innovative Concepts including airpods
15:56
with cameras the company here's the key point the company hasn't abandoned its long-term Ambitions to create Standalone
16:02
AR glasses continuing work on fundamental Technologies like micro LED
16:08
displays so at first it sounds like Apple's killing AR glasses they're never going to do them um but when you read
16:15
into it it sounds like this product would have been analogous to like the xreal air glasses yeah you know when The
16:24
Vision Pro came out and everybody fell in love with Mac virtual display everybody was saying man Apple should
16:29
just make a product that's like tiny glasses and all it does is Mac virtual display well it kind of sounds like
16:35
that's what this product was and apple tried it and they realized it didn't work or meet their expectations for
16:41
whatever reason or another and they killed that but it does sound like you know obviously they're not giving up on Vision Pro they're still going to make
16:47
those they still have those products in the pipeline the Holy Grail product is still a Vision Pro class device that can
16:53
fit into glasses but you know we're not ready for that yet and they decided that well
16:59
just do Mac virtual display as a product didn't work either so it's not goodbye
17:06
it's just good buy for now I don't think they're gonna they're going to give up on this like you said but reading all
17:14
the all the uh contexts from Shark I I
17:20
mean the technolog is not there they weren't able to fit battery into the
17:26
actual glasses I mean anything that if I asked you if this technology were possible you'd probably rattle off in a list not even having been involved in
17:32
the development team all the things that you're like I don't know I I don't know how they would get that to work those seem to be all the things that killed
17:38
the project yeah and like other people have been saying like well why don't you just why why can't you you know make a
17:44
lighter weight version of this product that he like plugs into my iPhone and just uses processing power of my iPhone and my iPhone's battery well I mean just
17:52
look at the battery pack of the Vision Pro compared to your iPhone it's like three times bigger than your entire phone so you get like 2 hours worth of
17:58
that and then both your Vision Pro and your phone is dead that's worse probably pretty fast yeah and once we saw the
18:06
Vision Pro I mean I think we talked about this maybe last episode or the one before once you see the Vision Pro you're like oh there's no way they're
18:11
making glasses like this is this Compact and portable as they can make it so much so that they had to put a battery pack
18:18
on your hip or in your pocket like how are they going to go from that to glasses that do anything close to what
18:25
Vision Pro does like we're looking at probably I I would guess at least 10 to 15 years before anything like that is
18:31
even close to being possible so for now they're going to just probably make Pro better and better I always come back to
18:36
like the Bill Gates quote that's like people overestimate what can happen in five years and underestimate what can happen in 10 years yeah like five years
18:44
after the original iPhone we had the iPhone 4S which was a nice phone but it was still kind of limited 10 years after
18:50
the original iPhone we had the iPhone 10 which is you know the modern smartphone that we still pretty much carry to this
18:55
day like so I wouldn't I think maybe 10 years we would have a much more compelling version of The Vision Pro but
19:01
like I mean you look at it and it's like an inch thick and like all of the computer part of the Vision Pro is like
19:07
between your eyes and the real world so like in order to turn the Vision Pro into glasses with a see-through display
19:14
they're going to have to move all of that computer stuff somewhere else and it's not like there's that much room
19:19
like between your eyes and your ears so or Shrink it all down so much
19:26
but I don't know man like a big problem a big part of this
19:31
problem is the amount of battery power that's needed are they going to make I think they said like in order to make
19:37
the glasses work it would need to draw a tenth of the power that like an iPhone currently draws I forget exactly what
19:43
like the measure was but it was it was a drastic reduction in power usage to make something like this work and I'm like
19:49
are we going to get to that point in 10 years like Battery Technology moves at a
19:56
glacial P Pace like there is there's not been any big improvements to battery
20:01
anything in I don't even know how many years 20 years um I mean they can make
20:07
their components more and more and more efficient but are they going to make it that much more efficient in 10 years like I just don't see it like I think
20:12
the best that we could hope for in 10 years is a vastly improved Vision Pro that's lighter and smaller and um and
20:21
and the battery pack maybe they could shrink it for that reason but an improvement in the battery pack I just
20:26
don't think it's going to happen so I I just don't see us with a vastly
20:32
different version of Vision Pro in 10 years it would be better and then like glasses I don't think there's any hope
20:38
so if you were hoping to get your Steve Jobs Heritage Edition you know glasses a
20:43
serious scoop that we had in this show um many many moons ago I don't know if
20:49
that's happening but then it makes me think well shoot maybe they were considering making like a Steve Jobs
20:54
Heritage Edition set of glasses or like those were like the test units that they had going around like as kind of like as
21:01
a goof right it's like oh they're like testing it with like these glasses that look like Steve Jobs glasses I don't know man I don't know and and for those
21:08
of you that don't know what I'm talking about I mean we had John proster on forever ago and he like revealed that
21:16
Apple was working on these glasses Steve Jobs Heritage dising glasses with TW is an awesome story I just wonder if it was
21:22
ever true and I'm not saying that he was lying but I I think like well why would
21:27
you end up with a story like that like either someone trolled you or apple was
21:34
just testing them and it was never something that was ever meant to see the light of day I don't know I mean if if they're making glasses you're gonna you
21:40
know it's the Johnny I design like philosophy they're going to try every different shape of glasses and I'm sure
21:46
they tried circular glasses it wouldn't look remotely like Steve Jobs glasses in the end once he put a computer in there
21:53
but you can try and I'm sure they did shoot well
21:59
we've been talking about this way longer than I thought we were going to so maybe we should move on to something a little
22:04
bit more mind melting am I right Louis oh M the Mind melter melted minds are
22:11
very popular these days yeah so um don't know if you ever had the the excitement of an Apple
22:18
earnings call I leave those to you Louis usually I sort of God we're sitting
22:23
there like you know with drool coming out of our sides of our mouth falling asleep and
22:29
trying desperately to come up with anything to say and this one yesterday it was just like you know factoid after
22:34
factoid metric after metric that was just mind-blowing and we just wow what the so we just decided to round
22:42
up some of the impressive numbers so start with apple hit a new all-time high
22:48
of 2.35 billion active devices 2.35 billion that's that's like
22:55
one for every 3.4 people on the planet just seems
23:01
shocking this this next bit I find this suspect Tim Cook says uh Apple
23:07
intelligence is driving iPhone sales in regions where available in the markets
23:12
where we had launched Apple intelligence they outperformed the markets that we did not Tim Cook said I thought about
23:18
this more and I think I figured out the pattern here if you look at China the
23:24
iPhone is underperforming in China this year and it just so happens that Apple intelligence isn't available in China so
23:31
I think it's just a matter of correlation where Apple's doing worse in China and they're you know still selling
23:37
iPhones in the United States and that that's all it takes to like build like some sort of correlation there like
23:43
intelligence is only in the US and like I mean officially English yeah it was it
23:49
was one of those weird things we like really okay anyway I should I should have held that one for later uh so the
23:56
uh gross margins at Apple report reported 46% for the quarter dang 46%
24:03
gross margins yeah and and as Leander pointed out we we kind of crowdsourced this little post about this uh Leander
24:11
wrote businesses generally aim for 10 to 15% grow margins whereas you know like restaurants struggle to make 5%
24:19
um apples was 46% and uh the services division which
24:26
is you know iCloud and Apple pay and Apple tv plus 75% gross
24:33
margins that just shows you why they're pushing it so hard man yeah you you think back to when whenever Tim Cook
24:39
said that he was going to prioritize Services well I guess part of that is you can
24:45
just charge whatever you want for services you know and like people say well iCloud costs me $6 instead of $4 or
24:52
whatever you know it's like 75% profit and they did away with
24:57
the iTunes gift cards that you could use for discounts on Apple Services going to just throw that out there actually can I
25:04
just add real fast I it's kind of genus if you think about it in the absence of
25:10
Apple's next big product which everyone has been waiting for they kind of made Services the the next iPhone you know
25:16
it's like I don't know what the total revenue is for services um versus iPhone I'm sure it's a lot lower but just think
25:23
at all that gravy that they're making that they would not have been making and instead of selling you
25:29
you an iPhone that you absolutely have to have like let's just make it incrementally better and let's just
25:34
monetize the heck out of everyone who is already in our ecosystem with these services and let's raise the price of uh
25:40
Apple One bundle you know from $34 to $37 or whatever it was I don't think that was during this quarter but you
25:47
know like okay well that's a huge percentage increase and how many people said no I that's I'm stopping it no you
25:53
just said oh well there's three more dollars that Tim Cook has that I don't have once you've sold an iPhone literally everybody who wants one then
26:00
that's the only next move you can do unless you decide to make or you make a really great iPhone that makes them all
26:06
one upgrade again but yeah the ultimate slap across the face is just iCloud
26:12
photo storage like how expensive it is I I knew we were gonna get I I it's just mind-blowing to me that I'm giving Apple
26:19
$20 a month to just store my photos so that they sink across devices it's just
26:26
an outrage man and in in next year I might be going to $30 because there's no
26:32
end there's no end to it I mean you just keep taking more 4K video more photos and if like oh you you want to have
26:38
those available on all your devices pay up sucker you got to do it let's put in
26:43
let's put in a bigger sensor and and enable larger file sizes next iPhone no
26:49
next iPhone is going to be like 140 uh megapixels you know it's like you'll be able to take like 8 vide long and of
26:55
course I I wouldn't be me if I didn't mention what are you doing with those 4K videos absolutely nothing absolutely
27:03
nothing you can't watch them on your iPhone you can't watch them on your iPad your 4K Apple TV no can't watch them
27:09
can't watch them on your Mac can't watch them on anything you are literally just
27:14
putting those videos into iCloud so that you could take up more storage and then
27:19
pay Apple to store them and what are you doing with with them nothing the only way you could watch a 4K video on your
27:26
Apple TV is to download it on your Mac maybe your iPhone and then and then
27:32
AirPlay it to your Apple TV on your 4K television that's the only way to watch that 4K video that you took on your
27:37
iPhone I mean it's just it's absolutely mindboggling it it's and no one ever mentions it but me I feel like and I try
27:43
not to it cuz CU people just get annoyed I think but you take 4K videos so that you have high resolution memories for
27:49
the rest of your life not because you can't play them on your Apple TV like playing it on Apple TV is like the most
27:55
Niche you use case ever what are you talking about dude you're taking a 4K
28:01
video to preserve a memory you can't watch the memory in 4k there's nowhere watch you can I can watch I watch them
28:06
on my Mac all the time not in 4k you don't yes I do because my Mac has my Mac
28:12
downloads my entire library in Full Resolution do you have a 4k monitor yes I do I have a 5k monitor okay so so that
28:18
is one of the few use cases where it actually does work but that is such a
28:24
sliver of the user base that has a 5k monitor that has enough storage on their Mac to download the whole thing right so
28:32
in that instance yeah it's not a waste of money like you objected is like and I'm going to have all of these 4K videos in the future when you know eventually
28:40
it's not a waste for it's not a Apple TVs will be able to play them in 4k I hope they don't I hope so but I I mean
28:47
that's where they need to head but but the point is is like you you just affirmed my point most people can't do what you do
28:56
which is why it's a waste it's like most people are just squirreling away these 4K videos and they can't watch them
29:02
because they don't even know how first of all most people don't even know that the 4K the Apple TV
29:07
4K doesn't even play your photo your your library of photos and videos in 4k
29:14
it doesn't do that maybe the photos actually tested that recently like is that still true of the latest Apple TV I
29:21
mean as far as I'm aware we maybe someone in the chat can confirm this as far as I'm aware I mean it's been maybe
29:26
a few months Maybe four or five months since I looked this up but but yeah I'm and if you if you share a video in a
29:33
shared um um not a shared Library um in a shared album
29:40
720p Apple puts those videos to 720p it's just crazy and and and the
29:47
reason they probably do this is because they want to save money on bandwidth that's got to be why cuz every platform
29:54
known to man streams in 4k it's not like it's not technically possible it's just Apple doesn't want to do it because they
30:01
want that sweet gravy man TC wants the gravy he doesn't want you to have the gravy TC wants the gravy this his
30:07
favorite thing to put we we derailed your story here I don't think so we just improved
30:12
it well you're asking about iPhone sales well guess what they were down to you
30:19
know down to 69.1 billion oh no we're in
30:24
trouble how could What UN ful business it's a hobby uh you know Wall Street
30:32
always looks at iPhone sales as like it's like their main metric I think that
30:38
everybody cares uh uh one thing was different yesterday was that there's a new uh CFO Kevin
30:45
perek uh he brushed off the 0.8% drop calling iPhone sales quote roughly
30:53
flat he did a good job kind of s like an AI uh as he talked very smooth uh still
31:01
after all you know despite being down just a little bit which of course people you know Wall Street doesn't like uh
31:07
Apple still set an all-time record for iPhone upgraders and the active iPhone install
31:13
base let's see everything else is up to Max Max sales jumped 16% to just under 9
31:19
billion damn 9 billion uh you know Tim Cook said that
31:25
the uh M4 MacBook Pros are quote so compelling that it's driving both
31:30
upgrades at the Double Digit level and it's driving switchers at a double digit level there's a lot of talk of upgraders
31:35
and switchers yesterday I mean you think about it and like there was a giant wave of Max sales around 2020 you know for Co
31:42
and all that a lot of people working from home buying laptops and you know the M4 is a great time to upgrade from
31:48
an Intel Mac so I bet it's a lot of Intel Mac switchers upgrading to M4 on the first for their first time if I had
31:55
to take a yes and if you went from an Intel to an M4 oh dude I was talking to a guy this week
32:01
he's got he's got a 2011 um MacBook and I was like you're using a 2011 he's like
32:08
it still works I'm like dude your mind's going to be scrambled when you move to like like an M4 anything you you are
32:16
going to be absolutely Blown Away you're probably going have to take a day off to recover I mean the increase I mean just the
32:23
increase in speed going from the M1 to the M4 I was like this is actually no ible and I use ice menus too and I get
32:31
great satisfaction from seeing that I have four efficiency cores now instead of just two love it per performance cores don't even do
32:38
anything for me yet they haven't need to turn on yet let's see uh iPad sales also up 8.1
32:47
billion dollar last quarter um here's the most shocking part of that uh it's
32:53
not because of the M4 iPad Pro with the OLED screen Tim Cook said quote iPad
32:59
overall grew 15% for the quarter and it was more driven by iPad Air and the entry-level iPad than it was a top level
33:06
iPad it's not surprising I was surprised by that their their hiring gadgets are just so
33:12
expensive now you know it's just crazy let's see just couple couple more
33:18
points here uh iPad and Apple watch uh more than 50% of sales were to new
33:25
customers not upgraders so they keep bringing new people in uh and then finally you know you're talking about
33:31
Services how much Services makes yeah it's a fraction of what um iPhones make but it was up 14.4 or sorry 14%
33:39
year-over-year for a new record high they you know new record high new record high new record high alltime high over
33:44
and over yesterday uh in the past year Apple has seen nearly 100 billion
33:52
in revenue from services and that's just like pure man billion yeah that's the 75% % profit margin yeah so pretty
34:01
shocking uh final thing um prexa they are well over a billion paid
34:07
subscriptions a billion paid subscriptions wow I bet a lot of those are just iCloud photo storage yeah I
34:14
mean the gateway drug could be you know literally nothing but um that's just a lot of people writing
34:22
well writing a check you know H being debited or you know every every single
34:27
every single month and I bet the biggest expense there has got to be production of Apple TV Plus shows I mean what else
34:33
costs a lot of money to run the services aside from the infrastructure that they have to run anyway building solar to run
34:40
the the server Farms um and I I don't even think I mentioned this you know once again Apple set an all-time Revenue
34:47
record you know I mean the most Revenue they've ever brought in then of course what happens stock Falls but there stock
34:53
Falls one one last note that I want to point out is that the the wearables categor is interesting to me because if
34:59
you think through it what's in the wearables category uh the airpods Pro 2 that have that are now 3 years old um
35:06
the airpods 4 which are a good product and are probably carrying the whole thing uh Apple watches which in the
35:12
United States have fewer features than the old ones because they're still missing the blood oxygen sensor and The
35:17
Vision Pro really don't forget the airpods max set of products there got
35:22
got a USBC man that had a just really the same five years yeah
35:28
yeah it's true um I mean although I would like I would say uh airpods Pro got significantly better this year
35:35
thanks to that firmware update dude and uh airpods 3 got better too remember
35:40
like when I first got them I was like you know I'm just not super impressed with the active noise cancellation on
35:45
these and I would use them in the car and it felt like there were like these weird audio artifacts remember talking
35:52
about this okay airpods isn't that airpods 4 airpods 4 thank you with ANC
35:59
and I mean they did they don't fit in my ears as good which I don't love like I had one fall out of my ear for the first
36:05
time ever um which is kind of a bummer but right down a SE great thankfully I
36:11
was able to catch it but that has never happened to me before and the shape is definitely different than my um airpods
36:18
2 but I took the airpods 4 on my on my
36:23
trip to Washington DC you know what else I brought my airpods Max oh just in case
36:30
cuz I'm like I I get flight anxiety I'm like I I don't want to have the airplane noise and I was like but you know what
36:36
I'm going to just bring these because they're so much more convenient and try them out
36:43
and I didn't take the airpods max out of my bag they just stayed in my backpack
36:49
the whole time I Ed the airpods for the entire flight and they worked I mean not as well as the airpods
36:57
Max you obviously but they worked dang good I mean I I would take them in and
37:02
out and like the amount of white noise reduction I would say was probably 85 to
37:08
90% it just all of a sudden melted away all that airplane noise and all those
37:13
weird artifacts that I used to hear when I first got them they are gone I don't hear them in the car anymore I don't
37:20
hear them on the airplane I don't hear them when I'm wearing them around I think they improved them in some way and
37:27
there so good that I'm like okay I am I'm not going I'm going to St my I'm going to sell my airpods Max I just don't even need them anymore they sit in
37:33
a drawer and I don't really I don't really listen to enough
37:39
music that I Want to Break these things out and wear them all the time and I'm
37:44
going to just use the airpods 4 now for my flights and everything so they're
37:49
dang good man like the active noise cancellation on those is actually pretty good
37:54
now I've never tried is that the the air Max probably haven't depreciated at all because the new ones are pretty much
38:00
exactly the same yeah I don't know I wonder how much my airpods Max are worth like I'm going to guess like maybe 300
38:06
bucks I mean they're great headphones I just yeah I just I just um I just don't
38:12
need them I never use them anymore and in fact after I reviewed them I was like I don't know how often I'm actually going to use these they literally just
38:18
sit in a drawer they could fund um my my uh M4 Max MacBook Pro purchase which
38:25
definitely stung St earbuds and earphones are in in the like one product category that I'm not
38:32
particularly excited about buying used it's kind of like shoes I don't like buying used shoes or underwear
38:39
definitely not underwear I wouldn't either but dude people there is a market for
38:45
secondhand um airpods on eBay people buy them man yeah I I'm sure they do
38:53
wouldn't want to be what I do but you know what I mean if you can get like I mean they they us it cleaned but can you can you perfectly
39:00
clean a pair of airpods when they've been in your ears no just every time you put it in at
39:05
least for the first week you'd be going where's this been everyone's got uh different levels
39:12
of hygenic comfortness if that's a word comfortness
39:18
yeah okay all l oh oh Lo's eyes twitching he didn't like that one like K
39:24
that's not a real word his hands slowly going towards this crop the airpods 4 continue to be one of the best devices
39:30
that Apple released last year man I mean that case I'm not going to go on about it again but I have lost them so many
39:38
times and had to Ping the case and that sound is so loud that you can definitely hear it and go find it um it's just been
39:47
so so so useful and it's so much more compact than it was before I mean dude and then you get the ANC which actually
39:54
works and works well enough to use it on an airplane for like a 6-hour flight actually it was longer than six- hour
39:59
flight cuz my on my trip home from Washington DC I love this we have layover
40:05
okay and uh we were flying to Charlotte North
40:10
Carolina I don't know where Charlotte North Carolina is do you if I if I showed you a map could you point to it
40:17
so general area oh Griffin's nodding I'm dubious but I look at it when we're like
40:26
an hour away from leaving on a map and I was like wait a second they're flying us an hour and a half in
40:32
the wrong direction we're barely going west at all and we're going south so we
40:38
have to detour almost an hour plus in the wrong direction which just adds more
40:43
time to the flight which is the exact opposite of what you would want especially having flight anxiety so now
40:49
I'm like all nervous because instead of having to fly you know 5 hours home which is probably what would have been
40:56
if we had gone the correct Direction now we get to fly six and a half or whatever ended up being and there's
41:02
headwinds but at least I had my airpods uh four to quiet the baby crying you
41:08
know four rows behind me direct flights are fun direct flights you know what that's what my wife said I'm I'm all for
41:15
direct flights okay but let me ask you this question you have a direct flight
41:20
or you have a flight with one layover how much extra are you willing to spend
41:26
to have the direct flight what's that worth you now keep in mind this is a Nuance question because I think the
41:32
price you're willing to play also depends on how long the flight is right or or or how much extra time you're going to be spending in the air what's
41:40
the answer leis don't get it wrong $120
41:45
120 okay 120 you're gonna you're you got a layover in your future what
41:52
Griffin oh the Jose with the money bags he says 250 man
41:59
250 you can find you could find direct flights usually most places you can I
42:04
mean it depends on how when you're booking your ticket and where you're going and stuff but like for me our
42:10
tickets were already 450 per person which is not bad to go from Washington to Washington um but the direct flights
42:18
were like 1,200 1300 really oh I'm sorry that was total that was total like the direct flights were probably like $600
42:24
$700 and I was like yeah I just I'm like to save a couple hours you know
42:30
I I mean if you stop at an airport AR aren't you GNA you know well I know for
42:37
sure that I'm going to spend at least $30 just getting a beer I had thought
42:42
about that yeah layovers don't really bother me I mean God I hate them I I
42:48
also work for Leander Cay so I have more time than I have money so I kind of forced into accepting a layover if it's
42:55
a cheaper flight but I don't know I think it's a big deal they're paining they're expensive and and there's that
43:02
that increasingly probable probability that your flight your second flight's
43:08
going to get delayed or your first going get delayed you're going to miss the connector I mean there's nothing worse than missing missing the thing you know
43:16
I've had that happen on you know international flights and it just throws your life into chaos that actually
43:21
happened to us on the way there you're sitting there in the tarmac you're going hm we I was supposed to get there 45
43:29
minutes before my connecting flight and we're now 40 minutes late yeah and
43:34
you're just going what am I going to do and you're praying that they hold that second flight because there's enough
43:40
people on your flight and you get there one time I ran I ran like the I don't
43:46
know it seemed like a mile trying to get to a a connecting flight and like
43:51
sweating in yeah in Phoenix in my my Apple watch is you know I'm getting the
43:56
fast heartbeat alert you know like hey watch out your heart might be about to explode and uh and I I show up at that
44:03
desk and I'm sweating and I'm like what you know oh no no we just shut the door I'm like open the damn
44:11
door they wouldn't do it and then you know and then I watched as the people behind me you know slowly cuz I was the
44:17
first one there I ran as fast as I could and uh you know you know what ended up
44:23
happening I ended up having like a three three different connections on my instead of just going directly where I
44:28
was supposed to go had to go two other places and you know in Europe you know just it was just terrible yeah on the
44:36
way there we were supposed to land in Chicago which dude is like straight line
44:41
from Washington to Washington DC Chicago is like right in the middle and when we're at the airport I was noticing that
44:49
my boarding pass had changed and I was like what the heck is this and I go to look at the email and the Chicago flight
44:55
had been delayed by 3 hours which means we would have missed our connecting flight with Washington DC so instead
45:02
they automatically updated us to fly into Dallas which again wrong
45:08
direction and instead of getting into Washington DC at I think we were scheduled to get there at like 11:45
45:14
p.m. we got there at like 1:30 or 2 a.m. you know now it's eastern time so for us
45:20
it's like you know not that not that late anyway but we were literally traveling the entire day to to get there
45:26
and then the entire back we had to layover in um Charlotte for 3 hours we
45:32
had to wait there for three hours and I was like we're sitting there at the airport I was just me and my wife and I was like I got to watch like a whole
45:38
Lord of the Rings movie before we even get on to the six-h hour flight like what the heck am I supposed to do for
45:44
the next nine hours of the day terrible like I didn't I now I did download like
45:50
almost the entire first two seasons of um of uh Star Trek the Next Generation
45:56
so I did have that with me but I'm like how many you do those Seasons what why
46:01
would you do those Seasons this are the worst the show dude um one of my
46:06
favorite episodes ever I think is season one I think it's season one I don't know
46:12
I like I like to go in chronological order and and and you're right I never actually make it past season two because
46:18
I I I'll watch season one and two and then I'll wait for so long that I feel like I need to start over again anyway
46:24
so yeah do lounge access Wesley from the chat lounge access that's that's the dream right there kick back eat some um
46:33
eat some honeydew melon have some coffee you know but I don't have lounge access
46:39
man I don't fly off enough to to war that can we please move on I'm
46:44
sorry this guy this is the best part of the show all right let's see here where
46:49
are we okay I'll um I'll do a driveby on this one so everyone get ready to jump
46:56
and hide are you ready did I already do this one no oh my God no we've been stuck on that
47:02
story I don't know what are you feel like we did it I feel like we did it all right drive by here it comes um apple is
47:09
pulling out the big guns to fix Siri and apple intelligence no way no way you say well
47:17
let me see here there we go so it may finally happen we get the
47:23
Seri fix that we have all been working for why do we think that might be a possibility well Apple just appointed
47:29
seasoned Apple executive Kim vorath to spearhead improvements to its artificial
47:35
intelligence capabilities and Siri according to a new report VOR a 37-year
47:41
apple veteran she been there for 37 years played crucial roles in launching
47:47
both Vision Pro and the original iPhone now she's been named vice president of program management at Apple's AI or in
47:53
Apple's Ai and machine learning division according to Bloomberg known for her ability to troubleshoot problematic
47:59
products and successfully bring major projects to Market boras move represents
48:05
Apple's commitment to closing the AI capability Gap with competitors um blah blah blah blah blah
48:12
blah blah blah okay nothing else really interesting in there so this might be the person that we need to drop the
48:19
hammer to whip these developers into shape I mean it is astounding to me that that Siri has been as bad for as long as
48:25
it's been bad and it's the missing piece you know like they've got all the Apple intelligence stuff you can't use AI to
48:33
fix Siri there's got to be a way there's got to be a way so hopefully in the next year just keep getting worse I swear to
48:39
God just the other day I yelled at my home home pod you know play uh play some
48:44
specific song what does it do it plays something like completely not it's like
48:50
it's right there you have all the data you have every song name available why can you not play the song name I just
48:57
said in clear English with enunciating even can't be done sometime my favorite
49:04
example is like when I was talking about that thing and I was like you know so and so has to go to the blah blah blah
49:09
and it changed has to Capital H SS [Laughter]
49:16
hos because everything's about avocado hos avocados I was like you've got to be kidding me how bad could this possibly
49:23
be like that it doesn't understand the context and all a sudden it switches has for hos I mean dude I I find it I it's
49:32
actually embarrassing you know like we had friends over the other night and I said to the homep Pod play something and
49:37
it's just like laughable you know everybody's like that's you know it's we
49:43
we all just cracked up it's like how I I it it actually sometimes torqus me off
49:48
so much I'm just like I feel like throwing them out the window if you have an artist in your music library with
49:53
numbers in the band name or anything whatsoever you can just give up right there it's never going to get it
49:59
right it's amazing it's amazing how bad that that particular thing is because that is not really complicated from a
50:08
doesn't seem like it from a data perspective yeah I'm with you there but you know what there is hope for
50:15
leis carplay carplay too I'm a huge carplay offici andado now I don't know if you
50:21
know that about me glad you got on the train oh dude love it Absol abolutely
50:27
love carplay once you got it there's no going back right right Griffin am I right yes so you know what even be
50:34
better than carplay carplay 2 oh like the next iteration Apple says the Next
50:41
Generation carplay refresh will provide quote the ultimate iPhone experience for the car uh while Apple carplay currently
50:48
only controls your I um sorry well carplay currently only controls your car's infotainment system its next
50:55
iteration will provide content for all the driver screens including the instrument cluster and apple showed this
51:02
off at car this next generation carplay at WWDC 2022 uh two and a half years ago and it
51:09
still hasn't shown up Apple previously mentioned that the first vehicles with carplay 2 would be announced by the end
51:14
of 2024 but um I don't know if you oops haven't noticed but that has not happened yet yeah um but Apple says they
51:23
haven't given up on the N big carplay update in a statement to Mac Rumors they've said quote we continue to work
51:30
closely with several automakers enabling them to Showcase their unique brand and visual design philosophies in the next
51:36
generation of carplay each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will
51:43
support the next generation of carplay so delayed but it's still coming don't don't worry about it I hope that they
51:49
don't end up giving up on carplay because I I I can imagine that the car manufacturers are resistant to it um um
51:57
but it's just such an absolutely terrific product and I I don't really know what Apple benefits from it um I
52:04
wonder if they're trying to charge like a licensing fee to all the car companies which dude pay Apple the fee like to not
52:12
have to design the system on your own and just give it to Apple and have them make something that people actually love
52:18
using it integrates with the devices they already own is such a great user experience no joke I I would
52:25
seriously have to think about buying a car that didn't support carplay in some way shape or form like when I was
52:32
thinking about buying a not a used Honda a brand new Honda um I wasn't even sure
52:37
I wanted a car that didn't support wireless carplay which of course only their better models do um which is funny
52:44
because like that carplay computer carpod go which I've talked about here on the show they sent me one to review I was like it supports Wireless carplay
52:51
and it's great it's like such a good aftermarket product Rock Solid reliable I've had so few problems with it I'm
52:57
actually shocked how good it is and uh how come it can support wireless car
53:03
play but in order to buy a Honda Civic you got to get like the ultimate tier model which is like $88,000 more just to
53:10
get the wireless car play of course we all know why they want the gravy they want the gravy talking about like why
53:15
Apple does it I think it's one of those things that doesn't directly make the money but it does contribute to the
53:21
feeling of oh well I really like my iPhone because I have carplay I could get an Android phone but I mean I already know how to use carplay and
53:27
that's one of my favorite features I don't know if I would like that as much I'll just stick with an iPhone again like same thing with like why Apple made
53:34
a web browser like make money on Safari but it's like oh well you know I I
53:39
really like using Safari and you know I I should buy MAC because I like Safari or you know oh Apple made a web browser
53:45
I should switch Del and try that out again you mean it's like the uh the $5 Costco chickens man just keeps keeps you
53:52
in the membership well I mean that that is a product that they do make money on so the $5
53:58
chicken I mean you're talking about a product that they that they literally sell whereas my point is like well they
54:03
don't actually make money on carplay yeah I'm saying that Costco doesn't make money on those chickens like there's no
54:09
way that you could sell a fully cooked chicken for $5 and make money on that like a chicken just a just a uncooked
54:17
chicken at Costco is like you know $16 how are they making money on the $5 one
54:23
when it's cooked same chicken but it's cooked makes no sense man they got to be but they hope that it'll get you in the
54:29
door and to buy other stuff or or so I've heard uh all right we're so this is
54:35
one of my favorite episodes we ever did I I don't know if anyone else will enjoy it but like these tangents are the best
54:40
man these these are my gonna listen to it because it's a day late is true so we can just talk about whatever we want okay where are we what do we got next um
54:48
oh we're almost done leis you've said so little on this
54:53
episode come on now um but this is it you get the best story of the week right
55:00
here this is your favorite huh the the headlin is the most bananas iPhone case ever it really should be the most banana
55:07
iPhone case ever look at that case look at that beauty this is this is the new uh Andy
55:16
Warhol how do you pronounce it with it's an X by Casi collection okay uh anyway
55:22
casify has a Andy Warhol collection they've got this ridiculously large banana-shaped iPhone
55:30
case looks like the the cover of a Velvet Underground if you remember that image I don't but it's classic
55:38
image classic image uh look at look at the back of the case we got to describe
55:44
this for people the back really really Des so the the case itself I they didn't have the dimensions in the thing but
55:50
it's got to be like I don't know 10 inches how big would you say that is the
55:55
the the edges it's at least twice as big as the iPhone at least twice as tall as the iPhone I'll make sure this is the
56:01
chapter artwork for for those of you listening if you're podcast supports chapter artwork but like if you can't look at it for whatever reason look at
56:08
the back of your phone and look how big the camera bump is and then then look at this image and you'll see that like this
56:14
is a a case that turns your iPhone into a banana shape that looks like it's twice as tall as the phone itself in
56:21
like a large you know Eclipse shape like shape like a banana except it's like way larger than an actual banana it's huge
56:29
bright giant Yellow it has to fit your giant rectangular phone in the middle of that large curved shape it looks
56:36
protective actually CU all the material on the top and the bottom of the banana it would your pH if you phone is in that
56:41
it would gently float to the ground the thing almost probably like flap like wings I love the back you just basically
56:48
snap your phone in this huge ridiculous banana shape it's just crazy um so let's
56:54
see they also have um uh like airpods cases and more
57:00
traditional i iPhone shape cases uh based on Andy War soup yeah the the the
57:08
classic you know Campbell Soup can kind of thing dude I I have to admit I do not
57:14
I do not get why people think that this is interesting artwork like it's a
57:19
Campbell Soup can you know oh I don't I don't understand what so
57:25
Avant gar about this well when did it come out in the 60s I mean it was uh you
57:32
know interesting and and obviously it's it's I mean cultur
57:38
culturally uh relevant had a big impact because we all still know it right well at least I do um I do too I just never
57:45
understood why we all still know it yeah well it's just it's just weird right I mean it was just weird art and and
57:51
Warhol was a strange dude a lot of weird things like the tomato soup can airpods
57:58
case come on that's tempting but the thing is all these things are really expensive too like that that banana
58:04
iPhone case $106 you could buy a bundle that has
58:09
everything I mean they've got Mac covers and iPad cases and all kinds of oh my gosh the entire set down from 728 $672
58:19
at least they give you um free shipping yeah yeah it's something else all kinds
58:26
of permutations on the uh tomato soup can and the banana and the brill pad box
58:31
so F you know if you look at those things you'll recognize them I suspect anyway it's just just goofy justu that
58:39
that is the I think that may be one of the crazy it's definitely one of the craziest IPO cases I've ever seen I
58:45
think you might be right and who would ever carry such a thing I don't know is
58:51
this whole thing just to be like collector's items probably would be my guess the Andy warhall estate was like
58:57
got to keep that money coming collector bundles and things yeah all right pretty
59:03
pretty nut um not bananas about the price I'm saying L yeah not not much
59:10
appeal to $106 iPhone case once again you've outdone yourself
59:16
and with that we going to go ahead and wrap it up there I was trying to come up
59:22
with another warhall pun but there's some ripe jokes there a
59:28
hello um yeah I think all in a bundle
59:33
I'm drawing a blank but those are all just making me want to end the show even even quicker uh that's been theast the
59:40
best 30 plus minute Apple conversation you're going to hear all week long I want to thank everyone for listening and
59:45
for hanging out live hope you all have a great weekend and we will see you
59:52
guys next time
59:58

1:00:04
can't abely nothing I don't even know what Brillo
1:00:11
is what no I don't know you don't know what a Brill pad is oh is that what it is is that like
1:00:20
steel wool with the soap in it yeah exactly exactly I haven't seen one of those like
1:00:26
30 years what they still make them I guarantee you they still
1:00:33
do oh yeah the original soap bad there you
1:00:40
go well my friends I think we're going to go ahead and slide right out of here
1:00:45
but a peel joke kind of it doesn't want uh thanks for hanging
