Apple unveiled their new iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, the Apple Watch Series 5, an updated entry-priced iPad, and shed some light on Apple Arcade and Apple TV+.
So how does it all stack up? What has us excited, and what made us sad.

What's going on, everybody
0:06
Ian here for Cultive Mac. And now that Apple has concluded their buy-innovation-only keynote, and shown off some of what
0:12
they have in store for us over the next couple months, I thought it would be worth taking
0:17
a look at some of the best and worst things announced their buy-innovation-only keynote
0:23
Starting with Apple Arcade and Apple TV Plus. They finally gave launch dates and prices for both services with Apple
0:30
Apple Arcade launching on September 19th along with iOS 13 and coming in at just $499 a month
0:37
That 499 shares the service across you and all your family members. So family with a couple kids could definitely take advantage of that $5 price tag to have a ton of games
0:46
100 plus games at launch across all of their family devices without any ads or in-app purchases
0:52
to make it a much smoother experience. Apple TV Plus is also coming in at $499 and will launch on November
0:59
1st, the service has a fairly limited catalog, which we'll get to in just a minute
1:06
Then before you start off on your 499 a month subscription to Apple TV Plus, you do get a one-week
1:11
free trial, and Apple will throw in a full year if you buy a qualifying iPhone, iPod, iPad, Mac
1:18
or Apple TV product, meaning if you get a brand new Apple TV for your house, you get a free year
1:23
at Apple TV Plus to try out the service and see what Apple has to offer. Another thing in the awesome category of things Apple introduced at the keynote is the new seventh generation iPad
1:33
It takes the six generation iPad and it spreads it out just a little bit more
1:38
giving the device a 10.2 inch screen instead of a 9.7, a half inch increase and making the entire thing fit in the same chassis as the iPad Air and the old iPad Pro 10.5 inch
1:49
With the seventh generation iPad starting at that $329 price point or $29 for educational customers
1:56
It's not a massive upgrade as far as the hardware goes, but it is something that shows Apple's dedication
2:02
to improving the iPad and making it more competitive against Chromebooks, especially for educational uses
2:08
Coming up next on the list is the Apple Watch Series 5, which takes its place on the awesome things list because of the new Always On Display Apple showed off a lot of genius in the way they implemented this always on display with things like flipping the background colors on complications or the actual watch face
2:27
when the screen is not being looked at while also keeping some of those subpixels lit up
2:33
but dimmed so you could still see the time just at a glance without even to flip or move your wrist
2:38
In the past the screen would be black when you weren't looking at it. Now you'll be able to glance down at your watch or see it with
2:44
without having to actually flip your wrist up and still be able to read the time
2:48
or see your complications to quickly get an idea of what's going on. If you need to see more or want to get a better look at it
2:54
simply raising your wrist will bring everything back to full brightness, full color, and make it even easier to read
3:00
or even easier to see. Fourth of on the list is the iPhone 11
3:05
which replaces the iPhone 10R. Basically, this is Apple's entry point for the new iPhones
3:11
and it brings that starting price down to $699, dollars, which is a huge plus
3:15
It also adds in a second camera, doubling that of the iPhone 10R. So now you have a standard lens and an ultra-wide lens to complement it, both of which
3:24
are capable of shooting 4K at 60 frames a second, offer a new night mode, which lets
3:31
you take pictures in a very dark scene and have the camera use tons of software smarts
3:37
to improve the overall lighting in the image and make it something usable instead of something
3:42
that's just black. You also get Apple's extended dynamic range on both cameras, even when shooting in 4K
3:50
meaning you get better color and better contrast in your videos when shooting video
3:55
on the iPhone 11, and adds slow-mo for the front-facing camera because that's something apparently people want
4:03
You get a whole range of colors, including purple, green, yellow, red, black, or white
4:09
as well as a water-resistant phone up to two meters for 30 minutes, meaning it's going to be that much more resilient if you get the
4:17
phone wet. The final big thing shown off at the keynote that I think really impressed a lot of
4:21
people was the fact that Apple has finally figured out how to name their iPhone devices. They have
4:26
the iPhone 8 anchoring the lineup at a very affordable $449. They keep the 10R around in the lineup
4:33
at They also have the iPhone 11 starting at just and the new iPhone 111 Pro models starting at depending on screen size
4:46
Now, if you've taken a look at some of the big hits of Apple's iPhone 11 event
4:50
here are some of the misses, the not so great things that Apple showed off on stage at its event
4:56
Starting again with Apple TV Plus, and there's a lot of things that we'd like to see
5:00
just out of Apple TV Plus as a service. We don't know what the full lineup's going to look like
5:04
only know about a few shows coming to the service. And for $4.99 a month, even with that one week or even one year, free trial, it seems like
5:12
there's a lot of room for growth before the service is really ready for the prime time
5:17
Disney Plus is going to launch just a few days after Apple TV Plus does
5:22
Disney Plus is going to have a massive back catalog for only a couple bucks more a month
5:26
So it's hard to say whether Apple TV Plus is going to succeed or be something that's worth it in the near term
5:32
It doesn't mean it couldn't be great in the long term, but we're just not sure where it's going to land right now
5:38
The next thing that was kind of a letdown on Apple's event was the Apple Watch battery life
5:43
Now we saw huge changes from the original Apple Watch all the way up through the series 3 and 4 with extended battery life, better two-day battery life
5:54
And now with the Series 5, Apple has basically said, what we had last year is what we can offer again
5:58
Now, yes, there are things like the Always On display that are going to be using more power
6:02
than the watch has ever used before. Looking at the other fitness trackers on the market like Fitbit, those devices can last several
6:10
days on a single charge. So the Apple watch lasting a day, a day and a half
6:15
Even two days is really kind of on the weaker side and it will be great to see Apple really
6:19
push the envelope on what the battery in the Apple watch can do
6:23
Next one of the list of things that are total letdown is the loss, the death of 3D touch
6:28
Now with the 10R last year, Apple replaced 3D touch with haptic touch
6:32
basically replicating the experience of 3D touch by just long pressing on the screen
6:38
and then giving you a little haptic buzz when the actual action was happening to make it feel
6:43
like you were pressing something, but it never was quite the same as the actual experience
6:47
of using pressure to create a different type of touch. Now with the iPhone 11 which like I said replaces the iPhone 10R haptic touch is still there but on the 11 Pro models Apple has gotten rid of 3D touch in favor of haptic touch
7:03
meaning if you've gotten used to using 3D touch for all kinds of different shortcuts
7:07
now that's gone and it's kind of a letdown, especially for somebody like me who uses 3D touch quite frequently
7:14
Next up on the list of things that totally bummed us out
7:18
This is the name for the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Yes, they're actually calling it the iPhone 11 Pro Max, and that is a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad name
7:29
Last up on the list of things that Apple showed off at the keynote that were total letdowns, total bummers, total misses, things that were maybe even arguably bad, it's the use and attempt to make Slofis a thing
7:43
Anyway, Apple decided to try to coin the term Slofi as a slow motion selfie video, which I'm
7:52
sure is going to catch on now just like an emoji and iMessage stickers and iMessage effects
8:00
We might be okay. Anyway, that's pretty much it for Apple's iPhone event
8:05
That's the good, the bad, the surprises, the not-so surprises, and the kind of just downright weird things that happened at the event
8:14
All in all, we're pretty excited about the new Apple Watch and the new iPhones
8:18
The new iPad is going to be great for the educational market, and we can't wait to try out Apple Arcade and Apple TV Plus when they launch later this year
8:26
Let me a comment down below and let me know what you thought of the iPhone 11 event. Hit the thumbs up button if you enjoyed the video
8:32
Hit the thumbs down if you think Slofi's are going to be a thing. Make sure you subscribe with the channel and hit the notification bell so you don't miss any of our videos as they come up down the road
8:41
I'm Ian for Cote of Mac and I'll catch you guys in the next one. Why can't we just call things what they are, slow motion selfies, or slow motion front-facing video
8:58
Like, why does everything have to have a name? I'm never saying that again
9:09
That, as Marquez said, that was the first and last time I'm saying it, that's it
