Hello and welcome to the Comcast, the bestish Apple conversation you're going
0:08
to hear all week long. I'm your host, Lyanna Kaney. Join me today is Deg Griffin Jones. Welcome, Griffin.
0:15
Good evening. That always throws me off, Griffin. And also, uh, we have Lewis Wallace.
0:22
Good morning. Exactly. There you go. Well, we have a pretty exciting show to
0:28
do today. Uh we are waiting for our iPhones which are going to be arriving I guess today by the time the show comes
0:35
out. Uh I know. Yeah. I'm I'm pretty excited for these ones uh for the you know more
0:40
excited I think than normal. Yeah. I I got uh cosmic orange trepidation.
0:48
Oh, I can't wait to find out if that lives up to your expectations. You know, I I got to say that the pictures I've
0:54
been seeing of people using them, you know, in reviews and stuff, it actually looks like it might be orange.
1:00
Well, I the the I've seen equal people saying it looks really orange and it
1:05
doesn't look orange. Like it almost seems to be one to one. People see colors differently, right?
1:11
But, uh, interesting. And they not a lot of people have got their hands on them yet either. I mean, they're basing this totally on the
1:17
reviews and the, you know, the the the the stuff that's been published so far. But, uh, yeah, I, you know, c very
1:24
curious to see if that that that, you know, that lives up to your expectations. And then, of course, you're going to slap it right in a case,
1:29
so you'll never see the orange ever again. In fact, I tried to think I couldn't even remember what color my phone was. I had to actually take the case off to look at it.
1:35
I uh I hedged my bets. Oh,
1:40
orange case as well. Orange silicone. Silicone case. We'll see. I don't know. Might look stupid on
1:46
an orange phone. We'll see. Yeah, that's pretty bold. I can't wait to see that.
1:52
Apple says that they they made the the buttons on the new silicone cases even nicer once again. So, have you have you
1:59
clicked them yet or not? Really? Uh, still in the box. Haven't put it in the phone yet, so don't have the phone, but uh yeah, I
2:05
don't know. Can't tell. I love the way the I've been using the silicone case for a while now, the Apple one, and I I
2:10
really like it. Freaking bright yellow is what it is.
2:15
It does. That orange color. I mean, that's totally like nautical, isn't it? And and and sort of It reminds me that the the the uh the 80s sport, um
2:23
Walkman. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Although they those are yellow, but yeah, very bright.
2:28
Very cool. Well, well, we're going to talk this week about uh the new features in iOS, Watch OS, iPad OS, and also Mac
2:34
OS. Mac OS 26. Uh we have a surprise feature coming to the all new MacBook
2:40
Pro. This one's a crazy crazy story. uh how to fix a major problem in Mac OS Tahoe and whether or not it is time to
2:46
upgrade your phone, your iPhone. Uh before we get into the show, I'd like to thank this week's sponsor, which is Open
2:53
Case. Um Open Case is this clever iPhone case that's built for that has a a big
3:00
open space on the back of the case. So, it's kind of like a mix between a regular case and a bumper. And Lewis,
3:05
you have one. Why don't you let's have a quick look at this. Yeah, this is what it looks like. kind of, oddly enough, it kind of reminds me
3:11
of the uh iPhone 17 Pro design. It's got the big the the the big cutout is like
3:18
about as big as the uh white or white glass panel on the back of those. That's right. Exactly. And the cutout is
3:23
for is for Mags safe accessories. It's it's to to make it easier and better to put your MagSafe accessories onto the
3:29
back of the phone. It doesn't cover them up. It And this has several advantages. One, it stops them sliding around or shearing off um when they're in your
3:36
pocket. if you have a MagSafe wallet, it's not going to come um off when you put it in your back pocket. Um uh but
3:42
it's also better for charging, too. So, if you Apple recommends that when you put your phone on a on a Mag Safe charger, there shouldn't be anything
3:48
between the phone and the charger itself. And this problem solves that. Um and it comes with a some accessories. I
3:54
think you have a couple, right? Uh I don't think it necessarily comes with it. I think they offer it. I I I I don't
4:00
know about that, but uh they produce accessories including a a wallet,
4:06
which you know, you just slap it all these things in there. They fit quite nicely. Fit it into the back. There's a
4:13
This is funny. A a filler just in case you don't want to have the back of your phone showing. And a popsocket.
4:20
I never used a Popsocket, but I know some people love them. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my god. My mom loves her
4:26
PopSocket as my daughter. Uh, and you know the other advantages as well is that because of the cutout on the back,
4:32
they don't stick out so much. They they because they they're, you know, they they go right against the back of the
4:37
phone. Um, it makes it a little bit slimmer. So, um, yeah, this is the open
4:43
case. It's thinner, it's lighter, it's h perfect for the iPhone 17. If you're interested, then please go to
4:48

4:55
Once again, that's theopencase.com and promo code is cultcast for 10% off.
5:02
All right, very cool. So, Lewis, this is the craziest thing I've ever heard. Um,
5:08
in rumor, Apple rumor, uh, the new MacBook Pro might have a big change
5:14
coming next year. Yeah, they said it would never happen, but uh, the first OLED MacBook Pro could
5:21
add a touchcreen. This my god. This comes and this is this isn't just
5:27
you know like some random rumor from you know dark corner of the internet. This comes from one of our uh you know most
5:33
reliable analysts Mingchi Quo from TF International Securities and uh this is
5:40
what he he wrote on X. He wrote, "This shift appears to reflect Apple's
5:45
long-term observation of iPad user behavior, indicating that in certain scenarios, touch controls can enhance
5:52
both productivity and the overall user experience." So there supposedly Sam Samsung is going
5:59
to be uh supplying Apple with these touchsreen OLED panels that it doesn't say uh in this notes where it's going to
6:06
be. Yeah, I think it was coming out next year, right? I I I I uh like next fall,
6:11
wouldn't that be the best? Or I'm sorry, dub DC. That's the uh M6 model. I don't know if he actually don't remember if he
6:17
specified it's the M5 or the M6 one, but I think previous rumors indicated that the M5 is going to be a simple spec
6:22
bump. That's the one that we'll probably expect next early next year. And the M6 one, fall of 26, spring of 27 would be
6:30
the uh the M6 MacBook Pro. And that would be this model with the redesigned touchscreen. So, still still a while to
6:35
go, at least a year. Yeah, that that kind of threw me for a loop there. Yeah. So, that's what he says. He says, uh, slated for mass
6:42
production in late 2026. And, you know, the the the story that we've always been told, I don't know if
6:48
it's like a Steve Jobs quote or whatever, but it's always like, oh, you know, we No, this was been after Steve Jobs. It was probably like a Craig
6:54
Federiki quote, like, oh, you know, we tested this and we find that, you know, after half an hour your arms get too tired and it's just not a we're never
7:01
going to do it because it's not a good ergonomic thing. But I mean the thing is Apple has been making kind of
7:06
touchscreen laptops for the last 5 years. The iPad Pro with the keyboard case. And you know the thing is when you
7:13
have a touchcreen it's not like you have to use the touchcreen all the time. You'll use what's more comfortable for you. A MacBook you always have the
7:19
trackpad and keyboard right below it that you can use instead. The touchcreen is just useful for you know oh I'm just
7:24
going to reach over and swipe that thing or you know this happens all the time. you're showing somebody something on
7:30
your screen and they don't want to reach down in front of you and touch your touchpad. They just want to touch the screen and scroll or move this or tap
7:36
that. Have you ever used a a I mean, aside from an iPad, have you ever used a touchscreen laptop?
7:44
I've Yeah, I've used them occasionally for work. I had to, you know, deal with PC laptops unfortunately and some of
7:52
them had touchcreens. I had one a long time ago and I, you know, frankly, it's it's handy at times to be able to just
7:57
touch a screen like that. And uh I I still find myself actually doing that sometimes with my laptop when I'm
8:04
actually using it as a laptop. Well, that's I was wondering. I wonder if they noticed that people a lot of people are starting to try, you know,
8:09
they reach up to touch their screen and then they realize they remember, oh, no, that's right. It doesn't work like that because I mean, a lot of a lot of young people
8:15
who grew up with iPhones and iPads, they just expect every screen to be a touch screen. Even televisions, I don't know
8:20
what they expect to happen when they touch a television, but they they they want something to happen.
8:26
Yeah. Yeah, it it does make a lot of sense. But of course, you know, they've said they denied many This is an old Steve Jobs trick, too, isn't it? You
8:31
know, denying that you're making something. Oh, no, we're not going to make a we're not going to make an MP3 player. No, we'd never even think about that. And then, you know, two months
8:37
later, oop, iPod. Uh, and then so Craig Federa, I think he he said several times, haven't they? And and John
8:43
Turnis, all the example executives, whenever asked about this, they said, "Oh, no, no, no, no. Yeah, we're not going to we're not going to be doing
8:48
this. And and then, you know, like you said, it comes from Mingchi Quo, so this is not some sketchy rumor that, you know, is easily
8:55
dismissed. This is this is more than likely the case. So, kind of the one thing I wonder though, do you think it'll be a detachable screen? So, it'll
9:01
be uh you know, like because a lot of the ones, the touchscreen ones now, you can take the screen off, can't you? So, it clips into the keyboard so it's
9:09
actually a dual uh like an iPad device. Yeah. I don't know if that's I don't know if that's maybe the most
9:15
common. I know like Microsoft makes like their Surface laptop that can do that and there's like a few ones and most and
9:21
the convertible ones that like you know flip the screen around. I don't know if that's what Apple's terribly interested in because it it does come with a lot of
9:28
design compromises because then the screen has to be super thick but then the bottom also has to be super thick
9:33
and because you know it each of them have to have a battery in them. I don't I don't know if that's Apple's style
9:38
necessarily. It'll just be like a regular MacBook but with a touch screen. Well, and of course then if you did detach it, you'd have a Mac iPad, right?
9:46
Which which wouldn't make any sense. Their solution is we already make that. It's called the iPad Pro. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
9:53
Well, uh, and the Touch Bar was kind of like a step in this direction, wasn't it? Um,
9:58
that's what maybe when I was, you know, reading the story, that's what I started thinking about is the touch pad. I I I
10:03
missed that. Or what was it called? Touch bar. Touch bar. I can't even remember now. Touch bar, right? Touch bar. Yeah. I I I seen a lot of
10:10
people actually waxing nostalgic about it, too. You know, oh no, I miss a touch bar. It was really cool. I mean, I I didn't I
10:17
almost never used the laptop as a laptop, but when I did, I was like, "Wow, this the way that it changed uh
10:23
you know, kind of like the uh dynamic island, right? It it changes depending
10:28
on what app you're using or what you're doing." And uh I mean, that was a slick piece of hardware. I I I'm really kind
10:35
of sick that Apple gave up on that so fast. The kind of bizarre thing is that, you know, everybody liked it at first
10:41
and they're like, "Yeah, you know, this is a great first step. I can't wait to see how they improve on it in the next one." And Apple just refused to improve
10:48
it in any way whatsoever. And so naturally, like by the third year, people are like, "Yeah, this is why are
10:54
we still doing this?" You know? Yeah. I think, you know, my memory of it is that was universally hated.
11:00
And that's why the style just seems a bit strange now because, you know, where were you at the time? you know, they no
11:06
one spoke up in defense of it. It was all hate hate hate and and uh and they must have seen that I bet reflected in
11:13
the numbers of sales, you know, like I bet there must there probably were poor sales. That's probably what, you know,
11:18
made the decision more than anything else. I would have thought it it wasn't exactly a scientific test because they didn't change one variable.
11:24
That was also the same time that they went all in on the butterfly keyboard and all in on USBC five years before its
11:30
time. So, it it just got, you know, thrown out with the bath water. But I mean, I never lived with one. I had the 2015 MacBook
11:36
Pro for arguably too long. But the one thing I was always jealous of the touch bars is that you could use the touch bar
11:43
with the like the the video player scrubber to skip through YouTube ads. Oh, okay.
11:49
YouTube was never able to patch over that. So, I think I think that's still available. That's a very That's almost worth buying
11:54
one just for that, isn't it? It's um I I liked it because it was easy to choose an emoji. It was like I like
12:00
the emoji picker on it. Yeah. and and also the the you know the adjustments like screen brightness and and stuff like that. The the those kind
12:06
of utilitarian uses. Yeah. So this is crazy. I uh you know this is um this is probably many years
12:14
too late but better late than never. Looking forward to seeing that. The new Mac there's another part of this rumor,
12:20
isn't there? The the affordable MacBook which is going to be coming early next year. Is that right?
12:27
Yeah. supposedly mass production at in the fourth quarter of this year. So either you know late this year or early
12:34
next year. Yeah. So that won't be getting a touchcreen even though it uses an iPhone chip which the iPhone S uh system SoC
12:41
the system on a chip presumably it would be able to run a touchcreen but it's not going to get a touchcreen. So pay up for
12:48
the more expensive MacBook Pro to get this this cool feature. Yeah. I mean that that's absolutely
12:53
going to be made out of like you know parts bin parts. It's not going to get the touchcreen before before the MacBook
12:58
Pro does, you know. So So do you think that this is going to be on all devices or will be an optional
13:04
thing? Like will every MacBook Pro have a touchcreen or just, you know,
13:10
the MacBook Pro touch? I mean, my understanding is that it's not a terribly expensive
13:17
component to just add a capacitive layer on top. Well, they're gonna they're gonna have to change Mac OS, aren't they? I mean,
13:23
there's going to have to be changes to it to make it touchscreen friendly. I was wondering how I I have not
13:28
downloaded Mac OS 26. I I don't know how much it moves in that direction.
13:33
I mean, yeah, things have gotten a lot bigger in Mac OS. Bigger and easier to touch with a finger. They they wouldn't have to change as
13:39
much as you think. If you stick with like the default screen resolution that the MacBook Pro ships with out of the box, the menu bar on the Mac is actually
13:46
bigger than the menu bar on the iPad already. A few user interface elements are like that. like you know the the I
13:53
I'm pretty sure like the uh traffic light buttons on the new you know most in Mac OS Tahoe that have gotten bigger
13:59
and rounder those are those are big enough to tap with a finger I think that's over Apple's like you know
14:04
supposed 40 point limit for like the smallest touch target a lot of things have gotten bigger in Mac OS so you know
14:10
they've already made those changes it's hiding in plain sight that's like the one big complaint I've
14:17
seen from people using Mac OS 26 like oh everything's too big and I'm like sounds like they're
14:24
working toward a touchscreen, getting ready. I'm I'm disappointed it's going to take
14:29
like oh my god, you know, like another two years. But but uh it's an interesting change. And of course, yeah,
14:34
typical Apple as well. Deny it until you do it. And then talk about how it's the most amazing thing ever.
14:41
I know how they invented it. All right, let's move on. Let's talk
14:46
about everything new in iOS 26, including some hidden features. and Griffin is going to give us a tour of
14:51
that. Let's check it out. Sounds good. So, I had a big article
14:56
published over the weekend or no, earlier this week basically collecting
15:02
every single new iOS 26 feature I could find. Um, so I'm not going to go over
15:08
all of that now because it took me an hour to film the video. It was only seven already. I'm not going to do it again.
15:13
But, um, you can find that in the show notes. I'm going to call out some of the more hidden features in iOS 26. First of
15:21
all, there are new icon styles on the home screen. When you're you're customizing your home screen, you tap
15:27
the edit button on top. There's a new menu with more options there. Now, you can actually edit the wallpaper right
15:33
from the home screen. So, that's handy. Uh you can tap customize. And if you want, you can turn all of your icons
15:40
clear. You can have a clear dark or a clear light style so that they're all, you know, rendered in liquid glass.
15:47
Oh, cool. Yeah, perfect. And it affects your widgets as well. There's also a new tinted icon style. I
15:53
think the the tinted style was introduced last year, but uh it started from like the dark icons. Like the
16:01
tinted icon style was based on the dark icons and so it looked kind of ugly in my opinion. But now there's new light
16:06
tinted style which works better with like pastel colors if you want like you know light pink or light red or it it is
16:14
a little buggy like it it doesn't update every icon all all immediately. That's great. So that
16:22
little uh iPhone icon that was down there that you can you can change it so
16:27
it matches the color of your iPhone case, right? Yeah. If you have your phone in a in a
16:33
colored in an Apple case or you have, you know, the the blue iPhone uh from the from the customize menu, the
16:39
same menu where you customize the the color of your icons, there's a little case button. I currently don't have a case, so it
16:46
just turns them clear. And I have a black iPhone, so it doesn't give me that option, but uh yeah, that that's an
16:51
option as well. There's also an eyropper where you can like pick a color from your wallpaper. Wow.
16:56
Like I want that exact light blue and then it'll pick that for all your icons. Crazy.
17:02
I like that look. Um, you see that with Apple Watch quite a lot, don't you? People match the um the face to match
17:09
their strap. So, if you have a yellow strap, you have a yellow face. And I I think that looks really good.
17:15
That looks It's It's a really really good look. So, you can do that too with your phone. That's That's awesome. That's really cool. They actually have a case button.
17:21
Mhm. Mhm. Yeah. I I read about that and I was like, "What? I thought I thought I was reading some kind of nonsense, but it's
17:27
actually true." Yeah. Yeah. Because that that's the thing with Apple cases. They they always
17:32
sent like that little bit of information about the case to your phone so that you know when you attach your you put your
17:38
phone in your silicone case like the whole the whole phone screen turns yellow for a second. And now they figured out a a second use for that
17:45
feature. Um the problem I have with the the clear and tinted icons, I think they look cool
17:51
on the home screen because I'm very familiar with my home screen. Uh, as soon as I go to the app library, it's
17:57
like you're just seeing a whole screen of like nothing icons and then it all
18:02
the fudgeibility gets thrown out of the window. But, um, I do think is this because third party developers need to update their apps in order to be
18:08
compatible with this or No, it's because you're just looking at a whole screen and everything is the same color. Oh, I see. Yeah. Yeah.
18:13
It's hard to differentiate them. That's a high tens of um Do you remember uh we uh there used to be a there was a
18:20
it was a popular thing, wasn't it? A few years ago, people would organize their home screens according to the color of the apps.
18:26
Yeah. And um at first I thought that was a little bit odd, but then I it made total
18:33
sense to me because I think that's how you that's how I recognize apps is primarily by their color. That's how I do it on my personal home
18:39
screen. This this home screen, if you're watching the video right now, is a home screen that I switch to just for the purpose of doing videos so that nothing
18:45
personal reveals on my widgets. But uh yeah, I I absolutely do that. I organize them by color. Like you'll notice on my
18:50
doc, which is the same as my regular doc, that I have all blue icons down there. We have more new features. For
18:56
example, in messages, you can now create a poll between a group of people. And
19:03
this, I think, is going to be super handy. It's from the, you know, plus menu on the side when you're choosing an
19:09
attachment to a message. And then you can just type in multiple choices like where do you want to what do you want to get for lunch? You know, burgers,
19:15
spaghetti, pizza. It's a little limited on options.
19:21
There's no like settings. For example, everybody always only gets one vote.
19:26
A lot of times if you're you're trying to work out a group and you're trying to figure out like, you know, what would be the best food that everybody was it
19:32
would be interested in, you really want the ability to pick multiple options if you're okay with multiple things. Also,
19:37
you can't lock down the options. So, as soon as you send a poll, the other people can add their own options. um
19:44
which might not always be ideal depending on the situation, but uh it it's better than nothing. You know, it's handy having that feature built in. So,
19:51
you you send a poll, it shows up as, you know, yellow like multiple choice. You just tap one and uh there you go. You
19:57
you can vote. You can also send a poll just to one specific person and not a group. I guess
20:05
you could use it just to present somebody with a few options of things. That's going to be fun. I I look forward to playing around with that. Mhm. You
20:12
can also set message backgrounds. Apple sort of breezed over this in the uh in the keynote, but here's how it works.
20:19
You know, you just tap the person's name on the top and then, you know, there's a backgrounds tab. Just like you can rename a group or you can add an icon
20:26
for a group, you can you can choose the background and it's automatically set for everybody. They have a few built-in
20:32
ones like water or aurora or
20:38
sky and Oh, they even have multiple options for that. So you can pick, you
20:43
know, clear sky, sunrise, dawn. I'm actually just all animated, the clouds move.
20:49
Yeah. Yeah. Or, you know, when you do the when you do the ocean one, like the
20:54
the water is animated, the aurora borealis are animated on the screen, and
20:59
you have different colors you can choose. Um, you can generate one with image playground for some reason. I
21:06
don't know why you would. Six-fingered sloth. Yeah. Yeah. Uh or you can choose a
21:11
photo. It It's kind of buried among the options like it just says photo and it already shows a picture. So you might
21:17
think, well, do I have to pick that photo? No. If you tap on it, it brings up the photo picker. So that's uh that's
21:24
how that works. A big change is the toolbar in Safari got minimized again,
21:31
shrunk down to just the bare essentials. And you know when you scroll it disappears so you only see the address bar. But by default you have the back
21:38
button, the the page menu and then like the three dots menu. Um and I think a
21:44
lot of people are confused by this design because uh they think oh it's two taps to get to my tab overview. I have
21:50
to tap the three dot button and then tap all tabs. That's actually not true. Just like before you can swipe up on the
21:56
address bar to see your tab overview. Or you can swipe left and right just like you're swiping left and right between
22:02
apps. You can swipe left and right on the address bar to switch between your tabs or you can swipe right again to
22:08
create a new tab. Stuff like that. It takes a little bit of getting used to, doesn't it? Yeah, it does take some getting used to,
22:14
but if you don't want to get used to it, you can switch back to the old one. You go to the uh settings, you scroll at
22:21
the bottom to tap on apps. Then you scroll all the way down to tap on Safari. And then you scroll down again
22:27
and you can pick the uh bottom tab bar that was just like the one in iOS 18
22:34
where you have the full range of buttons and the address bar on the bottom. Or you can pick the top tab bar which is
22:41
you know how it was before. So you have the full range of buttons on the bottom and then the address bar on the top. So,
22:47
I I got to admit, I'm having a little bit of difficulty getting used to the uh the compact one.
22:53
I actually kind of like it. It looks less cluttered. It kind of stays out of the way. Uh I think when it has that
23:00
effect where it's floating on top of the website, it looks kind of cool. But I I And all of the same features are there.
23:05
Like you tap the three dots button and you tap bookmarks. You can get to your bookmarks and reading list. And uh you
23:11
can share by actually tapping and holding on the address bar. you have, you know, quick actions where you can
23:16
close and share or move it to a tab group. Well, that's probably the biggest use cases for me is sharing stuff, you know,
23:22
when when I go into the um into the menu bar, you know, that's probably the thing I do the most. Yeah. So, you just click and hold on the
23:27
address bar and it and you can do it all in one motion. You can tap and hold and then just swipe up your your thumb and then you can get to the share menu.
23:33
No, I same same thing. I do that all the time and I was kind of struggling with it, you know, and the the exact same
23:39
example you're talking about switching to other open tabs. So, that's good to know that there's other ways to do that.
23:45
Mhm. This actually does tie into another new hidden feature. If you can now share
23:51
something to the reminders app and it'll work with Apple intelligence to
23:57
automatically generate suggestions of things you can add based on what you're looking at. So, for example, I had a
24:03
recipe open in Safari. I tap share, share to reminders, and then because I'm looking at a recipe, it automatically
24:10
lists out all of the ingredients for that recipe. Good god. So, I can add it to my store list and I
24:15
can just go down the list, add all of these things to my to my reminders list. What the
24:20
Yeah, it's pretty cool. Or, you know, you're looking at a how-to article on Cult of Mac, need to remind yourself to
24:26
do something, you can go, you can hit the share button. And I guess I can try
24:32
this out. Hit the share button. shared to reminders app and then it'll, you know, pick out all of the uh oop it'll
24:40
crash or it'll or it'll crash your iPhone. There you go. That's more like it.
24:46
Oh, that's fun. Yeah, it's a beta, everybody. No, it's not a beta. It's actually a released operating system.
24:51
It's kind of hard to believe, but um Yep. Uh maybe wait until 0.1,
24:57
but it Well, it would give you the steps of the how-to there. Hypothetically, yeah. Yeah, if you
25:02
wanted to do that. But like the recipe thing, that's that's an excellent use case for it. One more that you can do uh
25:08
in the photos app, you want to look up an event, you look up, I don't know,
25:13
like a football game or a concert button at the bottom center and you can see uh you know information about the the photo
25:20
you're looking at or you can swipe up. Uh so then you can see ah this picture was uh taken at uh you know this
25:26
particular football event in Peyton Stadium. Yeah. or a a concert photo. Swipe up on
25:33
that. And uh in this particular example, it's showing me the the wrong concert event. I think because there were
25:38
multiple music acts happening at the same time around the same street corner. And uh this picture that I took at an
25:44
Alice Merin concert, I guess, is not as famous as the uh concert next door. But hypothetically, if I went to see nothing
25:51
more instead of Alice Merin, I could look up details of that event as well. I guess I'll do one more. in the passwords
25:57
amp if you accidentally overwrite a password and you know oh no
26:03
I forgot what that password was I it asked me the security code and it overwrote the password now now the
26:09
password is just lost well in the passwords app you can now view the history of a password so you tap the
26:15
view history button after you look it up and you can see oh it's changed six days ago that's what it used to be or you know that's what it was before that um
26:22
it's not showing it on the screen sharing because it wisely hides passwords when you're when you're doing screen
26:27
mirroring, which is what I'm doing here on the on the video version of the podcast, but you can see old versions of your passwords, which is super handy.
26:35
Well, and where was that button? Oh, view history. I see it. Okay. View history right under your password. Yeah. Yeah, definitely handy.
26:41
So, that that that's that's one of the one of the one of the features you want to teach everybody. And if you want to see the full list, I've uh got it linked
26:47
in the show notes, right? There's a lot of stuff, isn't there? This is a big big update. How are
26:52
um I presume some of the people around your life, you know, family, friends
26:58
have maybe asked you about iOS 26. Have What do we think the the general public reaction has been so far?
27:05
Well, to be honest, I haven't had one question about it from anyone in my family. No, no one.
27:10
No one. A couple of people at work asked about it, but yeah, and I I thought it was great. I like it. I like it a lot. I
27:16
thought I like that liquid glass. Um I like that. Um, you know, it uh I like the new look.
27:24
It's funny because when the beta first came out, there was a huge backlash. Oh my god, I hate it. And then it lasted
27:30
for about a week, everyone criticizing it's illegible. I can't see anything. Then about a week later, the tide
27:36
changed and and everyone was was starting to praise it like how much they'd like to. And we're seeing the same cycle now with the general public
27:44
that um we're seeing that we're in the hate phase. People are complaining about how much they can't see things, how
27:49
everything's changed. And and I'm sure in a week, like give it by next week, everyone's gonna be loving it. So, that
27:56
was that was one funny thing I noticed. If you look in the comments on my iOS 26 video, like there's a lot of comments
28:02
like this update is so ugly. I hate it. The spacing is freaking awful. You know, everything Android has had over a
28:08
decade. Glass thing sucks after such hype. So disappointed. The whole is looks just ugly. The glass stuff is
28:16
everywhere. It's just ugly. Like, right. It It does have a kind of an unfinished feel to it. I mean, there's things that
28:22
I just I I'm scrolling through. I'm like, geez, I you know, I waited out the beta. I I never because I don't want to
28:29
compromise my, you know, most precious tool in my life, my iPhone. Uh I waited till it was, you
28:36
know, ready for public consumption. I'm just I think it's not quite not quite
28:41
all polished up. uh is some of the some of the ways that the glass stuff looks like we end up seeing like two three
28:48
layers of text and it's just I I find that really just kind of ugly looking. I don't know.
28:54
Are you going to turn it off? Uh no, I'm going to keep using it for a while, you know, just like the Safari
29:00
stuff. I find those those that Safari seems like the biggest change to me that seems like whoa, how does how does this
29:07
work now? And I, you know, I I'm so used to doing those things every single day that and now it works in a different
29:13
way. So I find that jarring, but uh I I'm sure I'll get used to it. And it
29:18
doesn't doesn't seem like it's terrible anyway. So um but I swear there's a lot of animation glitches.
29:24
Like you some things just like refuse to animate and they just suddenly flash from like light to dark or suddenly the
29:30
the fun little like cross fade at the bottom will just appear with no animation whatsoever. And it's it's
29:36
especially bad on the Mac in some of those like catalyst apps like podcasts. There are so many bugs in in the podcast
29:43
app on Tahoe. I I like the way like the little um fast forward and rewind uh arrows in the
29:49
podcast app animate now. I mean, there's stuff in there that looks really cool, but it just kind of seems like it's not
29:56
quite polished up and and ready for release. Um I can't get used to that new
30:01
camera icon. Every time I see it, I think of Howal from uh 2001.
30:08
Oh, right. Uh I was s I was where did my camera go? Where did my camera Oh, there it is.
30:13
Um a few bugs as well. Like on on the I had a pretty popular post on Master John
30:18
earlier this week cuz like I was I was having a phone call and the contact picture I had for the person I was
30:24
calling was a picture of them like wearing like a light jean jacket and it was outdoors and it was slightly overexposed. So the bottom half of the
30:30
picture was really bright and white. Uh and it didn't change the the phone
30:36
controls to black. So half of the buttons are just completely illeible. Like I know the mute button is on the
30:42
right, the FaceTime button is in the middle, but you couldn't see it at all. The icons were just completely blended
30:47
in with the background. And it's a good thing we don't have um Graeme on the show because he would be completely ranting about the
30:52
accessibility issues that this brings up, which is actually is a good point really, isn't it? I mean, this is probably one of the the the most
30:58
substantial criticisms about it. You know, apart from people saying their aesthetic, you know, I I don't like it because of this, that, or the other,
31:03
because the way it looks, but, you know, for usability, um, they there are likely a whole host of issues. Although,
31:10
actually, I haven't seen that many complaints. Have you? Yeah. Yeah. A a lot of people are
31:16
complaining. It is a big step back in accessibility for that reason. And yeah, you can go to settings, accessibility,
31:21
display, reduce transparency, and that replaces the glass effect across the whole system with like the frosted
31:29
blurry effect that was in it before. But, you know, it's a setting that more people are going to have to be familiar
31:34
with, I suppose. Yeah. Right. If you want to turn it off, we have a post about that, don't we, on the site about how you can you can turn
31:39
off liquid glass. So, if you don't like it that it is actually quite easy to turn it off. Yeah. All right. Let's move on to um iPad OS
31:45
26, which um is probably the biggest UI revamp since 2010 for the iPad. It's a
31:54
huge huge change. Uh and of course, the big marquee feature is it now has windowed apps. So, just like on a Mac,
32:02
you can instead of it uh taking over um full screen or Apple's weird clutches, split screen stuff like that, you can
32:09
put the window wherever you like. um and uh have multiple apps running in
32:14
different windows and you can layer them all up and make a complete mess out of your your home screen. It's a more complicated system that's
32:20
just built out of the very simple rules of drag the bottom corner of a window to resize it and press the you know traffic
32:26
button controls to minimize or close or make them bigger. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And that that's
32:31
one thing that you I've been using it and to be honest I've been mostly using full screen apps. Um, I don't use my
32:38
iPad for work, so I'm usually, you know, reading, um, looking at stuff on the
32:43
web, doom scrolling, watching Netflix. So, there's only been a couple of occasions when I've actually had to try
32:49
and pull up different windows and and it it was very, very easy, very, very intuitive, easy to line. Like, I never
32:55
did like split screen and it was always I could never really get, you know, it was such a clutch, I could never really, you know, get it to work nicely. Um but
33:04
anyway, so this one is is is is is much easier to use and a couple of times I've had a couple of apps up, you know, cut
33:11
cut and pasting from one to the other. Work very well. Uh the one thing I do find sometimes is that when in say in
33:18
Safari, uh I hit I try to hit the back button and instead of going back it
33:24
resizes the window. It's like on um you know it it it it moves a window around. So I find that a little bit jaring
33:30
sometimes, but it's easily you know super easy fix. double tap the window again or tap the window again and it pops right back to where you want it.
33:36
So, uh it's um yeah, you know, windowed apps, I mean, people have been wanting
33:42
this forever and finally they got it and I I've seen nothing but but praise for it. Nothing but you know, love. People
33:49
love this, especially like I uh Ed Hardy, who's a one of the cult writers. He's a Mr. iPad uses he's been using an
33:55
iPad Pro as his main machine for years years and years and he's totally in love with this. be absolutely delighted over
34:02
the moon with it. So, it's a very very cool change. Uh, another one is they have a menu bar now. So, just like on a
34:08
Mac, you know, in an app, there's a menu bar at the top. They'll bring up a whole bunch of different controls. Got to say, haven't used it once. Um, but again,
34:17
something that I'm sure uh Ed would love. Um, the new files app. Um, this is
34:23
another big change that it brings another more Mac-like feature to the iPad which is um, uh, you know, getting
34:31
to your it brings a file management finally to the iPad. And it's the same as on the iPhone, right, Griffin?
34:38
Yeah. Yeah. And this is long like the files app has long been like just a more limited version of the Finder. I mean,
34:46
uh, but now now a bunch of the pro features have come back to it like um, open width for files. it no longer just
34:51
tries to intuit it what the app is that you want to open a file in. Like if you
34:57
ever both have an emulator on your phone and also like the the popular Delta
35:03
emulator, but also write, you know, plain text files in Markdown. I think I don't remember what console it is, but
35:09
there's a there's a particular video game console that uses a MD file extension that's also shared with Markdown files. MD for Markdown. Uh, so
35:18
it it would keep telling me, "Oh, yeah. Do you want to edit this text file in Delta for the Nintendo DS?" No. No, I
35:24
don't. Okay. But now you can open width. So you can say, "Oh, yeah, open this text file in Runstone. Open this ROM file in in
35:32
Delta." So that's a huge huge plus. It now has the uh rename multiple files
35:38
feature that was on the Mac previously. So you can do that. If you're in the column browser, you can resize each
35:44
column. It's not just a fixed width anymore. If you're in the the list view, you can it has like the little
35:50
disclosure arrows where you can tap to expand a subfolder without, you know, tapping in and going into a separate
35:55
view. So, big upgrade to the files app. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um much more like as
36:01
well. So, if you're familiar with the Mac, you know, it's it's a it's a it's it's going to look look pretty good. And the preview app as well. They're going
36:06
to the preview app has been brought to the Mac. Now, that is the one the preview app is probably one of the most
36:12
used apps I use on my Mac. Uh, use it every single day doing all the um stuff in the newsletter, comments and stuff
36:18
like that. Uh, adding signatures. So, that's a definitely a welcome addition as well to the iPad. A great great for
36:24
adding signatures to PDFs and stuff like that. Super super easy. Great for having just like a built-in PDF reader, you know, editor. You no
36:32
longer do you have to like figure out Adobe Acrobat or whatever the hell other PDF scummy app you can find on the app
36:38
store. You can just go to you just open the preview app and you know drag two files in and merge them into one
36:44
document or mark it up and have somebody to somebody sign a document with a pencil. Like super handy.
36:50
And I like the new look of the iPad OS as well. You know like I actually got really excit you know I think it looks it looks really good on the big screen
36:56
the liquid glass. I think it looks better than it does on the on the iPhone. And I like it. I like a lot on the uh the iPad and I I almost get a
37:02
little kick out of it when the the stupid, you know, numbers come up and I got to type in my code or whatever. Uh it it uh it looks very handsome and and
37:09
and the new home screen as well, the home screen improvements. Like I actually fiddled around with that and I put a really big clock on it and it's
37:15
oluded by the picture I have uh on my wallpaper. It's a good looking good looking update and mine's running on an
37:21
old 2018 iPad Pro which uh you know it runs it super snappy. I haven't had any
37:28
performance issues at all. Um, of course I'm like I said, you know, I'm I'm using it just to just to browse the web and
37:33
and and lightweight stuff. I'm not doing anything heavy. Uh, but but you know, for for for I think that's a use case
37:38
for a lot of people and it's been absolutely fine. It's been really good. I think that 2018 iPad Pro has got to be
37:44
one of the greatest of all time iPads, if not one of the greatest of all time Apple products because it came out of the gate with a brand new design that's
37:50
stuck through the whole iPad lineup for years and it's had just incredible longevity with it, too. So that's
37:56
Yeah, I've seen people I've seen people say that. Yeah, it's definitely as well. Hall of Famer. It's up there with the iMac and everything like that.
38:02
I don't know if it's I don't know if I'd say up there with the iMac, which literally saved the company from bankruptcy, but you know, it's a good
38:07
one. I'll give it that. All right. It's It's a little further down the list, but it's it's up there. It's up there for sure. I'm excited to review the, you know, the
38:13
next iPad Air that they come out with to to try all these things out for myself. Right. Totally. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, the iPad
38:19
lineup is is gorgeous now. Um even the entry- level iPad. I mean, that's an incredible value. I thought the iPad
38:25
lineup wonderful. I haven't actually Have you seen the new iPad Pros as the super the super super super thin ones.
38:30
I played with them in stores but not much more than that. But it is pretty insane how how thin they are. Right. I know. Madness. Madness. Like
38:36
you know the air before the air. Uh also is you know big big revamp in
38:42
watch OS 26 too. And I've got it running and like it very much. Uh we also looked
38:47
at this didn't we? We did a big post about all the new watch OS 26 features. And again Griffin is going to give us a
38:54
quick tour of some of the new stuff. Let's have a look. Yeah. So, we've got a workout buddy,
39:00
uh the the new little little live coach that that that talks you through as
39:05
you're doing a workout. Um when you first do a a workout after updating to
39:12
watch OS 26, it's kind of like blink and you miss it. Like the the setting only appears there once and you know it says,
39:18
"Oh, would you like to enable workout buddy?" And I accidentally tapped the wrong button. But um it's easy to
39:23
I think I had the same problem. Yeah, it's easy. It's pretty easy to reenable it, though. Um, if you then open the
39:29
workout app and you're scrolling through your list of workouts, uh, I think you have to like wait a second for all the buttons to appear, but then it's like
39:35
the button on the bottom right. We actually just discovered this immediately before we went live on the show. You tap that like
39:41
bell icon. It looks like a bell for some reason. And then you can enable workout buddy again. Um,
39:48
and as I mentioned before, I mostly use workouts on the watch when I'm mowing my
39:54
lawn, which I do as an outdoor walk. It's the closest approximation to doing
39:59
a push mower, I guess, even though I'm walking at like 2 miles per hour. Did work out, buddy? So, you got time to
40:05
step it up, buddy. Uh, well, it's interesting. uh what it tries to tell like the stats that it
40:12
tells you to encourage you when you're doing a really not very impressive workout.
40:18
You start off and it says, "All right, time to go. This is your first workout this week. It'll be the my only workout
40:23
this week." But it tries to say, "Yeah, keep it up. You're going to close your rings."
40:28
Whatever. And then when you hit your first mile marker, it's actually a setting where you can choose like the
40:34
split or like the stats or how often you want it to chime in. By default, it'll chime in every mile you hit. And the
40:40
first time you hit the mile marker, it'll like give you all these cheery stats like, "Oh yeah, you did hit that
40:46
mile in 28 minutes. You burned not very many calories, like 150 calories."
40:51
And those are the obvious ones, but then it like keeps going. It's like, and you know, you've just done your 500th
40:58
workout hour this year, or you've just done this, or you've just done that. And it goes for quite a while. Like
41:05
sometimes it'll have like 20 30 seconds of like just cheerily reading off stats
41:10
to you. Sounds annoying as could be. Yeah. And how did you feel about it? Was
41:15
it annoying or was it motivating? I mean when when I'm when I'm mowing my lawn like I don't really need
41:21
motivation. Like I have to finish the whole thing. I'm not going to give up halfway and I'm not going to be like,
41:26
"Oh yeah, yeah, got to do it. Let's let's finish. Let's mow this grass." Like it's getting done at this speed.
41:32
going to do it regardless of what it tells me or not. But um I don't know, maybe I should go
41:38
for a run with it and maybe I'll have a different tune. But after the first one, it then starts to like interrupt you a
41:45
little shorter. It'll be like, "Oh yeah, you just completed your next mile. This was your time. Come on, go for it." And then, you know, third time it'll be like
41:52
it'll say, "The end is in sight." And it's like, "Well, I'm only halfway done with the lawn." Like I still got to wait. You don't know how long I'm going
41:58
to go. But it'll, you know, tell you when you close your rings. It it it it does smartly like interrupt
42:04
your music and then, you know, resume it after it's after it's done talking to you. But there's like a little like few
42:12
second delay between it stops your music and then for just long enough for you to think, "Oh, did one of my earbuds come
42:18
out and do I need to push it back in?" Like for just long enough before it starts talking to you to to think that
42:24
maybe something's gone wrong. But yeah, it catches you every time. Yeah, that's an interesting feature. I
42:30
can see how it might work for some people, but I was I was really interested to try it out. I've been riding my bike, you know,
42:36
like every week and and like you, I think I I must have dismissed it and and
42:41
I went looking for it. I was like, how do you turn on workout button? I couldn't find it anywhere. So, it's actually good to know that, you know,
42:46
like you said, when you first go into a workout, wait a minute, and then four buttons appear in each corner and it's
42:52
the bottom right corner to to reenable it again. So, I've reenabled it. I'm looking forward to using it. I need some encouragement when I'm racing my bike
42:58
through the streets of San Francisco. I'm curious if it'll work on you or if it'll just infuriate you greatly.
43:04
Yeah, me too. Because I'm not much of that, you know, like I'm really curious to see it, too. I'm I really would want to try it out. I'm going to try it out
43:09
this weekend. Oh, actually this weekend I'm going to be reviewing the new iPhone. So, no bike ride for me, but uh uh next week I'll I'll try it
43:16
out. I I'll go on a long ride up to Marin and see what it says. Well, I've got a I I mean, all of this is, you
43:22
know, framed around how I can make this part of my work. I've got to test the the heart rate thing on the new AirPods.
43:28
So, I'll be I'll be I'll be But it's also not time for me to mow my lawn. I'll probably be going for a jog or
43:33
something. I don't know. The shortest possible jog. Good luck.
43:39
Uh I haven't tested this new feature because it's exclusive to the newer Apple watches, but there's the new uh
43:47
gesture called wrist flick. So, how you used to have to like, you know, turn your wrist towards you to show the time,
43:52
you can do the opposite of that. Flick your watch away from you to dismiss a notification and I think that's
43:58
available on the Series 9 and newer and Ultra 2 and newer. Have either of you use this feature?
44:03
I didn't even know about it. I have not tried it. I just now did it and it's like I don't have a
44:08
notification. So, I can uh shoot you a text. Yeah, sure.
44:14
Have you ever used that wrist any you know the the finger stuff, Louis? the double tap. Yeah.
44:19
Yeah. You know, once in a while doing dishes or something, you need to tap something. Yeah. It's No, I don't find
44:26
that to be I I still find it hilarious that that was at one point a uh you know, like a marquee feature. Wow.
44:33
This is the brand new feature. Uh tapping in the air.
44:38
Great. Yeah. Notification silence. So, I notified you anyway. It it it uh I got the notification and
44:44
uh Yeah. Yeah. Went right away. That's fine. I mean, sure. Actually seems it's actually kind
44:51
of appropriate, right? It's like, get out of here. Yeah. Yeah. Flick it away. It's kind of like how they they say that
44:58
like Scott Forestall came up with shake to undo for the original iPhone. He's like, well, you know, if you accidentally do something and you just
45:03
like shake your phone out of anger, then it'll give you the option to undo it. Is that where it came from?
45:09
Yeah, I think so. That was that was how they came up with it. Yeah, that's a great feature. That's a that's a that's one hidden feature that
45:15
I've used over the years many many times. Many many times. Yeah. There's a new a new gesture for it where I think you can swipe with three
45:21
fingers left or right. And it usually interferes with like the interface of the app you're using, but it'll also
45:27
show you an undo button. So Oh, okay. Okay. Cool. Good one to know. Um that's not a new feature. That's just
45:33
uh let's see. There's also the notes app on the Apple Watch which is
45:39
I mean my my strongest use case for opening the notes is you know usually writing something down in a table and
45:45
notes on the Apple Watch doesn't support tables but it does support like basic list views and you know text and stuff
45:52
like that. So you can do that if I know some people who keep their shopping list in notes rather than reminders. So this
45:58
could be this could be handy for them. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I use the notes app quite a lot. It has a whole bunch of use cases. really good for like, you know,
46:04
digital hoarding. Yeah. Storing stuff away. And but the search works pretty good. So, you know, uh it
46:11
it you can find this stuff again if you kind of remember what keywords you were using. Um I've got about I've got I've got
46:16
hundreds and hundreds of notes. Um but so so it's a great app though. I think it's very very useful. I keep all kinds
46:22
of stuff in there. Uh reminders to I've even use it, you know, to-do list, stuff like that.
46:28
And it's really full featured now. My god, it does so many things. Mhm. Uh so it doesn't support tables. It
46:33
also doesn't support drawings, but I think you can, you know, obviously you're not going to like doodle on your wrist, but you can look at them if a
46:40
note happens to have an included drawing from your iPad or iPhone, but uh yeah, pretty handy there. And uh there's all
46:47
the hidden for more hidden features in Watch OS 26, you can look at the full article. All right. Actually, you know, I was I
46:53
wasn't talking about notes on my watch. I've never actually once looked at it on my watch. Okay. For some reason, I thought we were
46:58
talking about the iPhone. I completely forgotten. In fact, I didn't even know you had notes on the
47:03
watch. That's what we're saying. It just got added. Yeah. Yeah. It's just brand new. Yeah. You know, it seems like a if you use the notes app,
47:10
it seems perfect to have it on your wrist, right? Because if you're out doing something, you don't have your phone with you, which
47:17
almost never happens, but uh nice to be able to add a note. Sure. or know you're on the phone talking to somebody and you
47:24
know you can just like jot down a phone number or an email just on your wrist which is slower and more complicated
47:30
than just doing it on your phone but now you can. Yeah. Well, that the horrible keyboard.
47:35
Goodness me. Yeah. Wow. Wow. Cool. You're right. There they all are. 1600 nodes.

49:09
back to Griffin again. Uh, Griffin's got a how-to. This is how to fix app updates in Mac OS Tahoe. So, if you have a
49:16
problem with app updates, here's how to fix it. Mac OS Tahoe came out earlier this week, and people started to notice something
49:23
broken in the Mac App Store. And once it was pointed out to me on Mastadon, I realized, oh, yeah, this is broken for
49:28
me, too. Um, App Store updates just don't appear in Mac OS Tahoe for me. I
49:35
haven't updated any of my apps since I installed the beta months ago. though uh for some reason like you know you try to
49:41
refresh you try to sign out and sign back in again the Mac app store won't give you any updates I don't know why
49:46
this happened I don't know how Apple didn't catch this but uh there is a solution if you want to update to the
49:52
new Mac OS Tahoe versions of all your favorite apps there's a third party app
49:59
a utility that somebody makes called latest um this reads through all the apps on
50:06
your Mac and just gives you an integrated way to uh update them. You can just hit a button there. I don't
50:12
know how it works exactly, but it it does work pretty well. Um it's like free and open source. You can trust the code.
50:19
A lot of people use this. Like this is one this was, you know, the recommended way that I saw people talking about. So
50:25
you can find this at just max.codes at that URL. You can download it for
50:30
free. You know, it's it's fully notorized and everything. And uh I'll give a quick demo here. You open it,
50:38
it's pretty quick. It'll show you all the available app updates on your Mac. Um, so you know, my amstream, the email
50:44
client, you click on it, you can see the release notes that are probably pulled from the app store or wherever it comes
50:50
from. And then hit update, it'll update it. Noir, this is a Safari extension. Hit update. Um, and when I first ran
50:56
this after, uh, you know, doing the proper like final update to the released version of
51:02
Mac OS Tahoe, like this is just like packed with all these apps that had, you know, been sending out updates all summer that I never received. So, you
51:09
know, Croissant, this this definitely came from the Mac App Store. You know, you tap update, it'll do it there.
51:14
There's a refresh button in the upper right where you can check for new ones. I'm not entirely
51:20
sure how it works, but it works really well. So, if the Mac App Store is broken on your Mac, you should probably check it after you update to Tahoe. And then,
51:27
uh, honestly, my recommendation is don't update to Tahoe yet. But if you do and
51:33
you find that you're not getting app updates anymore, uh, check out this as an alternative. Well, that was one of the things we noticed this week was that a lot of
51:38
people, you know, like uh, rushed like headless, you know, chickens to up uh,
51:44
download iOS 26, but then update the Mac. No, wait a second. No way. you
51:50
know, no one's no one's up no one's jumping in. They're all waiting for um you know, 26.1
51:56
to uh to update, you know, let's let's make sure that all the uh the uh the bugs are ironed out. And of course, it's
52:03
a good point really, I think, although because a lot of people are saying, you know, obviously they use their work their Macs for work and and this is too
52:09
risky to to uh to to mess up their workflow. So, they're going to wait for the the first big update for the of Mac.
52:15
When's that going to be, do you think? Uh when have they done it in the past? How long's it taken? Usually like 0.1 comes out in like October, November, and
52:21
then point two is like the big one and that comes out in December. And then I think I think around like
52:27
three that's when they start to include the new emojis and that's when they start like you know forcing people to update rather than like allowing it as
52:33
like a you know a thing you can manually choose in settings. 3 is like the really stable one. Um, and
52:39
honestly, if you're okay running, if you're not like excited to be like wowed away by Liquid
52:45
Glass on the Mac, which it isn't really that impressive anyways, I would wait on the Mac. Uh, I don't know about that. I liked it.
52:51
I liked it a lot. I I was really I was so totally delighted with mine when I first downloaded. Whoa, this looks
52:56
awesome. Welcome to the future. I couldn't wait to dive in and then of course like nothing worked. So, I
53:03
haven't been able to use it. It's very clear that Apple was playing like emergency lastm minute cleanup on iOS.
53:09
Uh the Mac still has a lot of bugs in it that were have been present there all summer. So that's
53:14
and they haven't cleaned them up yet. Mhm. How many tickets did you file? I I gave up on filing tickets. I I I did
53:21
a few at the beginning, but like the feedback system is is so broken that I I
53:26
I didn't have the patience for it beyond the first few weeks. Too bad too bad. I found a bug on on the workout app on the Apple Watch.
53:33
Actually, when you do a um when you launch a workout, uh for me, when it when I select outdoor cycle, it doesn't
53:38
have the start button, I have to scroll down and then back up uh scroll down then back up again for it to for it to
53:44
show up the controls. And I was I was actually tempted to file that. I was thinking about you when I was thinking about it. But then
53:50
then I went out for a ride and I completely forgot. So that's fair. Should have made a note.
53:55
I I know now. I will. I definitely will. I definitely will. Uh let's move on to
54:01
our um question from our reader which comes from um sorry our viewer Helm HM
54:09
and it came in the Discord channel. So Helm says, "I've been running the beta. It's looking and performing great. System is a lot quicker."
54:15
Which beta are you running? Yeah. Right. Uh but he anyway he's
54:21
asking, "Can someone for the love of me give me a reason to upgrade this year?" And he's talking about upgrading his phone. So I'm running an iPhone 14 Pro.
54:28
Uh, and this is year three for me, which is uh unprecedented, but you know, it's still super fast. So, he uh Hel, you
54:35
know, why should he why should he what's a good reason for him upgrade his his phone, the iPhone 14 this year?
54:41
Orange. Apple intelligence.
54:48
That's right. Yeah. But the Apple intelligence stuff, you know, it's it's it's getting it it there's a lot of really really useful use cases for it, I
54:54
think, aren't there? you know, like um I I don't use the image playground or the the gen mo people genoji. I know maybe
55:01
I think the reason to upgrade is is for the cameras. It seems like the cameras the the the bigger sensors on the pros
55:08
across the line now 48 megapixel sensors on all three of the main cameras uh is
55:14
is is a good reason to upgrade. I mean the new tele the the the zoom photos are tele is it telephoto?
55:21
Telephoto. Yeah. Oh my god. Telephoto, if you're English. Yeah, right. Teley, the new telephoto.
55:28
The telephoto. Uh, they look great. They look way better. I've seen some comparisons to the iPhone 16 Pro, uh,
55:35
which has a smaller 12 megapixel sensor. Uh, and it's a it's a massive difference
55:41
from what I've seen, you know, from the samples I've seen. You you can they look they look they look great. They look
55:46
really fabulous. And that that that I think is a good reason to update. Uh, my advice is if it's already super fast,
55:52
don't. Just don't. You can just not. And you can save like, you know, $1,300. Just don't upgrade. And, you know, going
55:59
into iPhone review season, I've been pulling out all my old iPhones from my box and I was, you know, going through
56:04
them and like my iPhone 7 Plus is still like zippy fast. It's on an old version of iOS. But, you know what? There's
56:11
really no reason I had to update from the 7 Plus to the 12 Pro. There's no reason I had to update the 12 Pro to the
56:16
16 Pro. Like, it was still perfectly serviceable. done fine at the time that I upgraded last year and you know just
56:22
just don't update put put that thousand somewhere else. Yeah, good point. Good point. I mean if
56:28
if if speed and and utility is is is your you know your metrics then yeah, why not stick with it?
56:34
I mean that phone's going to last for uh in fact people were were were saying this week that the iPhone 6 and 6S uh
56:41
got security updates this week, didn't they? From uh 18.6. And these are 10-y
56:47
old phones. Um, uh, Android I think supports, uh, clarify. They don't run iOS 18, but
56:54
Apple does release security updates like as far back as like 17, 16, and 15. And
56:59
I think they released a security update for iOS 15. Yeah. But 10 year, the point I was
57:04
trying to make is that they're still supporting 10-y old phones with security updates, which is, you know, that's that
57:10
that's that's good practice from Apple. I mean, that's great. That's fantastic. They're keeping these things around
57:15
10-year-old devices and they're still making sure they're getting security updates. I mean, that's that is really good. I think fabulous customer, you
57:23
know, service. Mhm. So, your iPhone 14, I mean, maybe you can upgrade in 2033 or whenever it is.
57:32
Uh, I'm upgrading. I'm looking forward to getting mine tomorrow. I'm super excited about it. Actually, probably more excited about than any other phone
57:38
in recent memory. I think these these things look awesome. Uh, in fact, I kind of want I want every one in the lineup.
57:44
I I I'm disappointed I can only buy one iPhone. Uh, I'm really tempted to buy all of them all the way up and down the
57:50
line. They look awesome. Which one did you buy again? Uh, the Pro. Just the regular Pro. What color?
57:55
I can't remember. Deep blue. No, actually, I think I went for silver. I I was I I I was really tempted by the
58:03
deep blue. I was really That looked I think that looks gorgeous, but I went for the silver instead. And uh if people
58:08
are choosing to upgrade this year, what's a what's a great way they can what's a great way to do that?
58:14
Yeah, if um if you do want to upgrade, I mean, we cult runs a really good buyback program uh in partnership with a company
58:20
called My Phones Unlimited, and we buy back all of your old Apple gear, including AirPods, which um Apple won't
58:26
take, Apple won't take it, they won't even take a trade on AirPods. They won't accept them at all. So, if you're looking at the new AirPods Pro 3 uh and
58:34
you have an old pair of iPods AirPods lying around, we'll buy them and we'll buy almost any pair of AirPods work if
58:41
they're working. So, um this is a good way to get cash, too. Like, you know, um a lot of people who do take AirPods will
58:49
give you a credit, but if you want cash, we pay uh cash for AirPods. Um uh it's a
58:55
great system, too. It's it it's uh what you do is you go on the website. If you go to cultmite.com, scroll to the bottom
59:00
of the page, click on um the icons at the bottom there and submit uh the
59:06
details. You'll get a quote, you know, the price that we'll pay for your AirPods. Uh and a couple of days later,
59:12
you'll get a box which is prepaid with um some bubble wrap. So, you can put
59:17
your old AirPods into the box and just pop it back in the mail. It's super super easy. It's all prepaid. It's all
59:23
done for you. You don't have to go to Office Depot or go hand up an envelope or anything like that. Uh and then uh
59:29
after it's received uh we take a look at it, see that it's in, you know, the condition that it's described. Uh and
59:34
then you'll get um a check, an old fashioned check if you like in the mail or uh an a bank transfer. So it'll you
59:42
get paid electronically. Uh and it's super fast, super easy, very very very convenient. You don't have to really do
59:47
anything except um uh you know submit some details on the website and then put
59:52
your old AirPods into a box and uh and get your money for. And again we we we do all kinds we buy back all kinds of
59:58
stuff. All our Apple gear, you know, everything from um Apple Pencils, Magic Keyboards, iPads, Macs, MacBooks, um
1:00:05
there's all all kinds of Apple gear we buy back and it's a really good service, really convenient, really easy to use.
1:00:10
Uh, and again, if you want to uh take advantage of that, go check it out on the Cult of Might website and scroll to the bottom of the page and look at our
1:00:15
buyback uh subsite. You don't even have to scroll to the bottom of the page. It's right up there in the the header.
1:00:22
You're right. I forgot about you can you can look for the in the menu
1:00:28
at the very top of the website. Yep. It's a good service. Uh I think we actually do a good job with the with the
1:00:34
buyback stuff. Uh so I think that's it. That's all the codecast we have for you this week. Uh if um Oh, hi us. Yeah,
1:00:43
please hype us. If you're watching on YouTube, hit hit the hype button. Hype us up. Please do. Please do that. Yeah. Um
1:00:51
that'll that'll that'll uh that'll allow other people to discover this this magnificent podcast that we put out
1:00:57
every week. Uh anyway, if you want to if you want to carry on the fun, Lewis is on Twitter at
1:01:03
Lewis Wallace. Griff is on Macedon and Blue Sky Driffin Jones. And I write the cult newsletter today every day. Uh and
1:01:10
to get that you go to newsletters.cult.com and sign up. It's that's a really good newsletter as well.
1:01:16
The price for sure. It's free and it's a great newsletter. We do a really good job with it. It um
1:01:22
it's probably the this one I can say for sure is the best Apple newsletter you're ever going to subscribe to. So I
1:01:29
encourage you to do that. Uh send us a text uh on the show notes or on YouTube. Ask us some comments. We'd love to
1:01:35
answer you answer your questions. Send us new iPhone questions. We're getting the new iPhones next week on the show. So,
1:01:41
right. Yeah, that's a good point. Yeah. If there's anything you want to know about the new iPhones, yeah, we'll be able to answer them. And between us,
1:01:46
we're going to have we're going to be reviewing, I think, the whole entire iPhone lineup, but almost all the new products, I think, that Apple's putting
1:01:51
out this this week. So, watches, AirPods, the lot. So, if you do have questions about the new products, yeah,
1:01:57
please do. Please ask ask away. So, that's been the Cultcast, the bestish long Apple show. Conversation you're
1:02:03
going to hear all week long. Uh, new episodes come out every Thursday night. I'd like to thank you everybody for listening, watching, and we'll see you
1:02:09
next next time. Have a great weekend, everybody. See you. God. So, Leander, are you going
1:02:15
into the Apple store tomorrow to pick up your phone? I thought it was next week for some reason. And I thought,
1:02:21
yeah, but yeah, tomorrow, right? Yeah. I looked at the I looked at the calendar this morning. I'm like, I'm
1:02:27
like, are you joking? This is like this weekend, not next weekend.
