Photo Editing Has Never Been Easier
Apr 30, 2024
If you take photos on your iPhone, there's a good chance you've wanted (or needed) to edit them. Now, instead of running to the App Store for a decent photo editing app, Apple includes one right inside the Photos app on iOS... and it's REALLY good. Oh yeah - and it works for video, too. What's going on everybody, Ian here for Cult of Mac, and over the summer we covered
0:09
a bunch of iOS 13 features that made their debut this fall, but there were some that
0:13
we hadn't touched on yet. So to continue looking at those iOS 13 features, I thought it would be worth taking a look
0:18
at the updates to the Photos app, and in particular, the way that you can edit photos in the Photos app
0:24
Now, it's been said a million times over, but the best camera is often the one you have
0:28
with you, and for most of us, that's our iPhone. And if you're like me, you take tons and tons of pictures, but sometimes they don't turn
0:34
out quite the way you were expecting them to. Now that need to edit our photos has birthed an entire industry of third-party photo editing
0:42
apps, allowing us to tweak or modify or adjust our photos just a little bit to get them to
0:46
our liking. Now with iOS 13, Apple has taken a note from those third-party apps, and enhanced their
0:51
Photos app and the editing experience in the Photos app quite a bit to make it far more
0:56
compelling and useful to edit your photos, as long as you know what you're looking for
1:01
Now for the last few years, the Photos app has been able to do some really basic editing
1:05
like cropping or adjusting the brightness or contrast to kind of improve your pictures a little bit
1:09
But with iOS 13, Apple's really turned up the dial and given you a lot more features
1:13
to make your pictures look that much better. Now within the Photos app, you still get all those same basics you had before, but with
1:19
some new additions. Things like adjusting the sharpness, applying noise reduction, adjusting the warmth or tint
1:25
of an image, may seem like small things, but they can make a dramatic difference in how
1:30
your images turn out and how your pictures look when you post them to Instagram or have
1:34
them printed on a fracture. On top of that, there's also some new features in the crop menu
1:38
Now previously the crop menu was basically the ability to freeform crop, adjust the rotation
1:43
of an image, or apply a handful of pre-selected aspect ratios. Now in iOS 13, the auto crop feature will do its best to actually crop an image and
1:52
straighten an image while maintaining that important subject of the image. And you can also now adjust the skew of an image, so if it's a little bit off side to
2:01
side or top to bottom, you can actually tweak it to make things more accurate to the perspective
2:06
you were trying to achieve when you took the picture, which can be really helpful, especially
2:10
with the ultra wide lens on the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro
2:13
Another huge benefit to Photos and iOS 13 is the way you can actually now edit video
2:19
Now on older iOS versions, to do something as simple as rotating a video that you accidentally
2:23
took in portrait mode to be in landscape, the way that the camera and video gods intended
2:28
you had to export the video out to iMovie, apply the rotation, and then send it back
2:32
to your camera roll. On iOS 13, you no longer have to do that
2:36
In fact, Apple has extended almost every photo editing feature to the video section of iOS
2:41
13's photo app. This means you can now rotate, crop, de-skew, or apply color or stylistic effects to your
2:49
videos as well as your photos, meaning that you can get that exact video look that you
2:53
were looking for. And this makes photos incredibly powerful for both photo and video editing, something
2:58
that you couldn't do before without a third party app like iMovie, LumaFusion, or even
3:03
Apple's Clips app. Now for amateur photographers or even professionals in a lot of situations, the Photos app on
3:09
iOS 13 is good enough that it can actually be a really solid first level or even full
3:13
editing suite, depending on what it is you're looking for. But it doesn't have every feature you might need in a photo editing app, leaving a market
3:20
still for those third party apps. Adobe's Lightroom, for example, lets you do pixel by pixel adjustments to color or
3:26
style in an image. Both touch retouch or facetune allow you to do things like remove objects or blemishes
3:33
in an image, things you just can't do in the Photos app. And at the same time, on the video side of things, you still can't actually create
3:40
a movie in the Photos app. You still rely on an app like iMovie or Clips or LumaFusion to go through and actually build
3:46
out your videos. Now ultimately, the updates to the Photos app are really, really solid and a welcome change
3:52
They make it accessible for people to learn how to edit their photos and make adjustments
3:56
without needing a master class in photo editing. Now if you're the type of person who takes a ton of photos, either on your phone or with
4:02
your big camera that you then send those photos to your phone, and then you've been relying
4:06
on a third party app to edit your photos, it might be time to give the Photos app a
4:10
shot, especially for making those minor tweaks or minor adjustments just to post a picture
4:14
to Instagram or share it with your family. Let me know what you guys think in the comments down below
4:18
Be sure to give the video a thumbs up if you enjoyed and if you're using the Photos app. If you have a third party photo app that you prefer for whatever reason, let me know in
4:25
the comments down below. I love trying photo apps. They're one of my favorite things to play with on iOS
