hey everyone this is Michael from cult
0:06
to ma here and today I'm going to show
0:07
you how to get the most out of voice
0:09
dictation on your iOS device so both the
0:11
iPhone 4S and now the new iPad both
0:13
support voice dictation a lot of people
0:16
think that you know you can hit the
0:17
microphone button you can say whatever
0:18
you want to say and then you're done and
0:20
that's it but there's actually a lot of
0:21
different stuff that voice dictation
0:24
recognizes that you might be surprised
0:25
with a lot of punctuation all kinds of
0:28
stuff so I'm going to show you today how
0:30
you can get the most out of it so first
0:32
of all there's a lot of obvious stuff
0:34
that it recognizes such as this is a
0:36
sentence
0:38
period so you can see there it gets
0:40
periods now it also does things like
0:43
commas and Dot point so if you say IOS
0:48
5.1 it will get something like that also
0:51
if you want to put a dot between two
0:52
words it understands that as well so
0:54
that's something that not everybody
0:56
knows also do something like an ellipsis
0:59
and it will get that as well
1:01
Ellipsis so you can see there how that
1:03
worked now getting to some more advanced
1:05
stuff uh voice dictation will also
1:07
recognize new line and new paragraph So
1:09
if I would say something like this is a
1:12
test a voice dictation new line it works
1:15
pretty awesome period new paragraph I
1:18
really love voice dictation exclamation
1:21
point so if I move this down you can see
1:24
how it worked and it did the new line it
1:26
did the new paragraph and it all works
1:28
all together and while doesn't work all
1:30
the time in my testing you can also do
1:33
exclamation points and question marks
1:35
and you can also do inverted exclamation
1:37
points as well as question marks so
1:38
we'll try that
1:39
out invert exclamation point this is a
1:42
test exclamation
1:44
point so you can see there it did the
1:47
inverted exclamation point and the
1:48
exclamation point same works with
1:50
question marks as well you can even do
1:53
something like an ampersand I went to
1:55
the restaurant yesterday comma Ampersand
1:59
I had
2:00
a stake period so you can see what it
2:03
did there now this is something that I
2:05
tried to do when I first could use voice
2:07
dictation and I couldn't get it to work
2:09
and there's a little bit of a trick to
2:10
it so you can do something like
2:12
parentheses and brackets things like
2:14
that but you can't just say parenthesis
2:16
or bracket but what you can do is say
2:18
something like this this is a test open
2:22
parenthesis it's pretty neat Clos
2:25
parenthesis and it'll put in parenthesis
2:28
now if you just say parenthesis either
2:30
end it will just write out parentheses
2:32
so that's just a word of note so if I
2:34
would say this is a test parentheses
2:37
it's pretty neat
2:39
parenthesis it doesn't actually put the
2:41
parenthesis around it it'll write out
2:43
parenthesis in this case it said
2:44
breakfast I don't even know what that is
2:45
but anyways it will do that as well I
2:49
can also do Dash this is a test Dash
2:53
those work as well too period you how a
2:55
dash works now if you get into some of
2:57
the more advanced stuff even further
2:59
than that you can can actually specify
3:00
if you don't want it to put a space
3:02
between a word if it's a hyphenated word
3:04
and you don't want a space you can say
3:05
no space before the word and it will
3:07
eliminate any dashes or anything
3:09
hyphenations within the word you can
3:11
also turn on and off capitalization so
3:14
if you start a sentence and you say no
3:16
caps it will not put anything within
3:19
what you're saying in caps you can also
3:22
do all caps so if I say all caps this is
3:26
a
3:27
test so you can see there turns this
3:30
into all caps but if I specify all caps
3:34
on it will turn on all caps for the
3:35
entire selection and when I say all caps
3:37
off it turns it off so for example all
3:41
caps on this is a test all caps
3:45
off I can also turn on and off caps in
3:48
general so for
3:50
example caps on this is a test caps
3:55
off capitalizes every word so to show
3:59
you how can really tie this all together
4:00
and make voice dictation really work for
4:02
you I have a little example story here
4:04
that I'm going to dictate to the iPad
4:06
and we'll see how it works and it kind
4:07
of combines all the elements we talked
4:09
about Michael's story new line the other
4:13
day comma Michael was walking down the
4:15
road period he had walked 3.1 mil comma
4:19
but suddenly he stopped period looking
4:22
down at the ground comma he cried out
4:25
quote all caps on haha I found it all
4:29
caps off exclamation point end quote
4:32
there was an x on the road period open
4:36
parenthesis he thought that X marked the
4:38
spot for Treasure period closed
4:40
parenthesis he would soon find out that
4:42
he was wrong period new paragraph he dug
4:46
down until his hand was bleeding and
4:48
sore Dash nothing period he dug down
4:52
until he was covered in dirt Dash
4:54
nothing period in his blind ignorance
4:57
comma he kept looking for Treasure
4:59
period
5:00
eventually comma tired Ampersand
5:02
embarrassed comma he trudged home period
5:06
new line what a fool
5:08
Ellipsis so there you can see kind of
5:11
how it worked and how you can really
5:12
combine it all for one big story and of
5:14
course there's some errors in here it's
5:16
not perfect but I think it's in a lot of
5:18
cases for quick note taking things like
5:20
that and uh for punctuation too it's way
5:23
easier than typing but that's just my
5:25
opinion so there you go there's how you
5:27
can get the most out of voice cation on
5:29
iOS and I I think it's pretty cool so as
5:31
always if you have anything that you'd
5:32
like to see me do howu on make sure to
