let's hope and pray that worked oh no I think it failed horribly
0:06
I don't see anything this is going to be a catastrophe they're going to hate oh it actually worked no we're live
0:15
fantastic and we're live look at all these people waiting for us here we got Orlando we got Jeff crumpley we got John
0:24
Scott John Scott okay oh he wants Mrs D action oh don't worry she's here we got
0:30
cavan we got anth Towers yeah sorry a little bit of a delay there my friends you may notice that we have someone new
0:36
joining us and whenever we bring anyone onto the podcast it's always like 20 minutes of uh uh of uh trying to figure
0:44
out how we actually constructed the podcast cuz none of us remember anymore so it's a good exercise for me to
0:49
remember how we actually made things work and we got does anyone here know or
0:54
remember Charlie cell I do well besides you and
1:00
I'm actually impressed that you actually still remember things you're quite advanced in years now are
1:08
you no comment okay yeah we got Charlie here
1:14
and next week we may have another special
1:19
guest fantastic all right well let's just go ahead I've offended Charlie already he's completely gone mute we'll
1:27
see if he comes back yeah I I'm not speaking to you I've had
1:32
enough of you have fun okay that might make this episode a little bit more difficult than we expected so maybe just
1:38
direct your answers to Griffin if I ask you a question you can just speak to him yeah we'll speak through him okay that
1:43
sounds fine um I never agreed to this yeah well you're gonna have to moderate for us okay so I think we're ready to
1:50
roll I'm gonna go ahead Charlie I'm so sorry it's been so long since you've been on the show you're in for a real
1:57
treat we start off every episode with with like a um a very warm welcome from
2:04
from a very special lady that we all care deeply about she was in a movie
2:09
from a long time ago Mrs Doubtfire you probably never saw it nothing so we'll queue her up and um
2:19
we'll get this thing rolling although do I have all my I was never given an explanation I was just thrown into the
2:24
deep end I was like why does this happen before every show it just does it just does it's kind of hard explain you know
2:30
I figure like it's been so long do we even need to explain things anymore I I I feel like it ruins it if you explain
2:37
it too much I didn't I didn't find out until over a year into doing the podcast that my podcast that I am on has its own
2:44
Discord group that's talking about me yeah weal I was for a long time we were talking about you almost every day
2:50
making suggestions I can't believe how many people are here already we haven't even started yet all right let's go ahead and queue up Mrs D and uh we'll
2:59
get this thing rolling and oh Mrs D oh it's got It's got Charlie in the
3:05
box now I wasn't even expl planning for him to be there oh Mrs D you may have
3:11
noticed oh where's my delicious little Lis Wallace oh he's he's gone Mrs D he's
3:18
out on vacation oh that's too bad I wanted to send him some pictures of me and elcy in the
3:26
boar you know he mentioned that he got some un usual texts from some phone
3:31
number that he didn't recognize I didn't realize those are from you and now he's gone too I can't help but think that
3:37
might be a coincidence I'll have to follow up with him on that oh boy we got Griffin's eyebrows bouncing up and down
3:43
he might know something I'll have to follow with him after the show Mr d none of us none of us want to hear about that well Charlie might actually I know he's
3:50
into such escapades but for those of us with normal Central appetites we just
3:57
want to hear the Apple so if you don't mind let G get this thing rolling and we'll get this show on the road in
4:06
three hello and welcome to the cast the best 30 plus minute Apple conversation you're can
4:11
he all week long I'm your host join me today like a prisoner that escaped Alcatraz he's one of the very few culac
4:18
writers that escaped and live to tell the tale leis Wallace is still Fierce about
4:24
I can't even bring it up former riter from culac Charlie cell is here
4:30
[Music] nothing okay also with us you want hey
4:36
hi you realize it's an AIO podcast okay I about that part this is this this is
4:42
why I had to leave that's fine also with us you're just warming up he spends
4:47
almost as much time primping his hair as he does writing articles each morning
4:53
rer for C riing Jones is here good evening I noticed that you got
4:59
a haircut recently did I did you I actually don't I actually don't think
5:05
that I did I just you know the weather over here in Seattle's transitioning and uh I think that's
5:12
Halloween week yeah and yeah well it's part Halloween um and my hair transition
5:18
transitions with it I mean it's transitioning from being up here to transitioning to being on the ground there's that but uh and then also just
5:25
like what the weather like whatever the weather does my hair just changes with the seasons you know in Spring it's out
5:33
here in the wintertime it's down here in the summer time it's a little bit
5:38
flatter but I appreciate well well here in Ohio it's about time for the Harvest all all my Farmer neighbors are you know
5:46
harvesting their fields of corn really stuff like that yeah so now now when I go outside it it smells like uh what do
5:52
you call it gross like mulch or manure okay it's really lovely
5:59
don't you ever get used to that though and find it to be kind of soothing it's like ah it's like harvest
6:07
season now it smells like backyard I mean hey look it could be
6:14
worse you could live in Cleveland I joke I've never been to
6:19
Cleveland it is it I hear it's lovely I've never been uh I I've been to Cleveland and I have yet to discover
6:24
that fact okay all right well maybe maybe what I've heard about it is true
6:30
uh we got to start off with the massive huge Super Chat from Hugo last how much
6:35
did Charlie donate well that's a great question here you go I haven't seen any super chats coming in from Charlie but
6:40
Charlie if you want to talk we're going to need you to go ahead and plop down a super chat in the chat and then we'll
6:46
send it to you what's this for the Super Chat yeah the super chat some people
6:52
actually like the show and so they give us money for some reason yeah that that that the super chats are people who are
6:58
watching the live stream they basically just give us money and and it usually is only just one
7:05
person the great and generous and might and mighty Hugo last who thank you Hugo
7:11
last oh yeah every episode I mean and it also doesn't go to us it goes to Leander channel right well that's not true
7:19
YouTube YouTube takes a cut of it but then the rest goes to Leander so in his generosity he goes trying to support us
7:25
and he's just he's literally just giving Lander money which yeah it's so some ways will balance out but I'm sure
7:31
Leander is extremely appreciative of the money that he just actually he probably doesn't even know where the money comes
7:37
from it just goes into his pocket and and he just doesn't even know why it's there and he doesn't question it he just
7:42
spent it all on tea That's where his tea money comes from yeah we does spend your fortune on tea he's not drinking the cheap stuff I don't
7:49
think now actually that actually is probably exactly what he drinks so for
7:54
those of you who don't remember that's why his uh teeth are like all brown and rotting and falling out I think I think
8:00
it's quality of the tea the pesticides in there but we'll have to save that for a c cast off topic so for those of you
8:05
that don't know Charlie Man Charlie and I go way way way way way way back uh
8:11
Charlie was a riter at Colac years and years and years ago you preceded me I think Charlie I don't know when you
8:17
start really you might have yeah I see I was I've been there forever and then I
8:23
then I wasn't then I was again yep and then I wasn't again that's kind of in and out
8:30
I heard that you went on to do other riding escapades um and of course we have to mention that you have your own
8:36
Apple podcast that you do with with a former another former camac writer I'm
8:43
noticing a trend here I might be looking at my future uh Graham Bower and and what's that podcast called again that
8:50
that podcast is called Apple Core apple core and uh I get it Apple Core get it and it's a it's a we look at history
8:57
Apple history and then we we look deeply into it and then we take it apart and then we see how relev how it's well how
9:04
it reflects on what's going on at Apple today and it's quite good fun and Griffin is uh sometime actually quite
9:09
often guested oh You' G guess more than once yes yes we we have two with me in
9:18
it outstanding just keeps showing up and we can't I mean he's got such a cute face we can't kick him
9:23
out I mean I think he's probably like a six out of 10 but it's fine if you think that
9:30
I mean look at that hair I mean he's J takes him to at least an eight
9:36
and a half I if Like You cover the hair it's like yeah six but then like you take your hands away it's like whoa eight and it's like apple video podcast
9:44
but it it just just transcends everything guess it doesn't matter yeah it kind of filters
9:49
across my apologies to uh all of our listeners and and uh viewers are like
9:55
what is going on in this podcast um someday I'd like to come on but I know
10:01
that you guys broadcast at times that I sometimes can't make but we should talk yeah we're steps super late at night I
10:08
mean I am usually up pretty late anyway now I will admit that I haven't been invited
10:14
but I figured this should open invitation so I invited myself on that didn't stop
10:20
me okay I I just assumed that since we go way back just invite yourself that's how it works and Charlie and I went to
10:28
CES together I that might have been one of the last cs's that I went to in fact that may have been the last one that I
10:34
went to cuz I yeah maybe I might have done one more after that maybe that was the last one that was I mean that was the last good CES I think that might
10:41
after that I went downhill was that the one so far off base was that the one when they started they stopped doing
10:47
things in the Venetian and moved to like some Hotel way down at the end of the strip I forget which one it even
10:55
was yeah cuzz that's really I think it was that that's really it fell apart for me I was like this is like you used to
11:01
be able to spend like your time in like this beautiful hotel and it was like so fun to be there and there was so much to
11:07
do and then they moved it away from that hotel to like a glorified Motel 6 but it
11:12
was Vegas style and we went there and I was like dude the magic is gone this I I I don't want to come back if this is the
11:18
experience anymore and that was pretty much it for me I mean we had a view of a pretty pretty nice fairly empty car park
11:26
yeah it was empty and that was also the year I think that we went to that I don't know if you were there for that but we went to that Samsung event um
11:34
with it wasn't James Cameron it was um who's the dude that does Transformers Michael Bay Michael Bay I
11:40
always get those two confused Michael it was Michael baay it might be the same guy I've never seen them up close and I
11:48
don't know there was like a teleprompter error or something and we were all sitting there and the room got extremely awkward because he he like didn't know
11:54
what to say he was on stage during this presentation and he just straight up
11:59
panicked and this look of fear came over him and then he fled he I forget what he
12:05
said it was like I I can't do this and you L literally fled the stage and we
12:11
were all mortified this is happening and it's like a live streamed event and like
12:16
they didn't know what to do and so all of a sudden like the spotlight just goes back to like one of the CEOs or
12:22
Executives and he's standing there Frozen in fear he doesn't know what to say so they tried to carry on as Michael
12:28
Bay peeled out in the parking lot and make this and recover this presentation from
12:35
what had just happened and and it they didn't it was like completely awkward painfully awkward for the entire rest of
12:42
the show but you were you there for that I was there I I wasn't in that uh
12:49
but you were there for that c yes yeah I I was in Vegas I was I was around but yeah I was I wasn't in the Samsung event
12:54
Samsung event okay but I remember you coming out and and telling us all about it yeah that is one of my favorite
13:00
stories to tell from um yes anyway we're way out we're we're way out we we got all sorts of Apple stuff to talk about
13:06
uh before we dive in oh my goodness I didn't even load this up tis T tisk I
13:12
want to give a huge thank you to notion for supporting this episode notion
13:18
you're like what is notion I don't even know what notion is well I'm going to tell you that's what I'm here to do notion allows you to combine your notes
13:24
docs and projects into one space that's simple and beautifully designed and with
13:31
the new notion AI it has capabilities of multiple AI tools built in which means you can search generate analyze and chat
13:37
all inside notion uh the new notion AI is a single AI tool that does it all a
13:43
search across notion and other apps generate docs in your own style analyze PDFs and images and chat with you it can
13:49
chat with you about anything and uh I use notion in fact the other day I was doing a search I wanted to create a
13:56
product road map you know like it's a timeline of features that you want to introduce into a product and I wasn't
14:02
quite sure how to build like a really great road map and so I was just doing some research on my own to find tools
14:08
that you can use to do product road maps one of the top tools that came up notion I hadn't even considered to use it
14:15
because well I didn't consider it to be a tool that could do product roow mats it can it does so much stuff there's so
14:21
much stuff it is truly a Swiss army knife of stuff it is your document repository and more if you build your
14:28
wikis inside notion you can query those wi wikis so if you ever have a question on like what you're supposed to be doing
14:33
or how things are going to work you can just ask notion Ai and it will query your own Wiki and give you back the
14:40
answers that you saved which saves you a ton of time and helps you get back to work faster it just does so much stuff
14:46
which is why there are so many people who are transitioning to using notion for like managing their projects you
14:51
hear a lot of YouTubers using it for managing product or uh uh video schedules and and creating videos and
14:57
collaborating with their teams just just a really great tool you can try notion for free when you go to notion.com
15:04
cultcast that's all over case letters notion.com cultcast to try the powerful
15:09
easy to use notion AI today and when you use our link you're supporting our show which we appreciate notion.com
15:16
cultcast let's get into the first story of the day who's doing it Charlie we had
15:22
some big drops this week and we know now what's coming down the pipe for M4 Max
15:29
and looks like iPad Minis and stuff I gonna just give the story to you because I'm sitting here trying to do it myself
15:35
take it away okay it's that well everything is going to be going to M4
15:40
this year that's um and it looks like in according to Mark German Bloomberg's Mark Gman uh we're going to be getting
15:48
new M4 Power Max on November the 1st which will be a the low-end 14inch MacBook Pro uh and the well all of the
15:56
all of the MacBook Pros including you know the big ones the small ones the not so good ones the medium ones uh medium
16:03
ones and I mean but that's pretty much expected the I think the most interesting thing out of all of this is
16:09
the uh the Mac Mini because everything else is just going to be a you spe say
16:14
that yeah but I mean it is right I mean I know that you think that I don't think
16:20
that's the most interesting thing about this but I'm not going to get that's because you own always want to buy the
16:26
most the biggest most powerful CU it it it it pleases me greatly that
16:35
you know that about me cuz it's been a long time since we've talked and I do have this bizarre compulsion to always
16:42
get the absolute best that Apple has to offer even though I don't even need it if they made a 17lb 19inch MacBook Pro
16:50
with you know two M4 Ultras in it and it cost $18,000 there would be a small part
16:56
of me that would want to purchase that machine even though there's absolutely no way I would ever take advantage of
17:01
any of the features that it offered do you have trouble with your current MAC is it too slow for you
17:07
that's not a reason that's not a reason to not upgrade Charlie that's never a reason to not upgrade okay so no my per
17:15
my my current MAC does way more than I need and is sufficient it across all the
17:20
activities that I throw at it in fact I use um I stat menus so you can track like memory pressure and you can track
17:27
um CPU ization you can chart it over time so you can actually you can literally go look to see if your
17:34
computer is not meeting your needs and no the M1 Max MacBook Pro is probably I
17:40
mean that thing was so powerful when they released it it will probably be good for another three or four years now that all being said that's no reason not
17:47
to upgrade because guess what the M4 is looking to be one of the biggest upgrade
17:53
cycles that we've seen since the M1 and that alone yeah is going to be enough I
17:59
think to make the make the move you got to make think yeah I think the M1 was uh was obviously massive because we came
18:05
out of out of Intel and it was it was just a a huge huge uh upgrade in well in
18:10
everything performance the battery life went way up the things you know you didn't even need a fan in the low-end ones and I've got an M1 MacBook Pro the
18:18
fan never goes on on that I've had it for year well I've had it since it came out so several years now and these m4s
18:24
also look pretty pretty neat what makes the ma Mini specifically more exciting
18:30
than MacBook Pro is that it's giving it's giving two generations not just one it's currently stuck on the M2 so you're
18:37
getting a even bigger leap and the first brand new design and it's just a it's it's an
18:44
inherently more interesting computer because it's the Mac Mini and it's the best computer in the
18:49
world look the Mac Mini is a very cool computer you're succumbing to Apple's parlor trick here Griffin the fact that
18:57
it hasn't been upgraded in like 15 years and now they're going to toss it an M4
19:02
it's like that that's exactly what they're trying to do to get you excited like we didn't upgrade this computer in seven years and now we're putting in the
19:08
M4 and everyone's like wow oh yeah well you know all they're doing to the MacBook is just bumping the number and
19:14
putting the new chip in and you're you know everybody's losing their mind about that brand new computer well look I I'm
19:21
not saying that the Mac Mini is not exciting because I actually do think it is and I think for most people if you already have a computer screen
19:29
then I think the Mac Mini is probably going to be perfect for a lot of people but if you're looking for absolute
19:35
horsepower which I know Charlie's into both both horses and power both only
19:41
yeah both together and only together okay I I heard also separately so the M4
19:46
MacBook Pro is going to be like the single core performance boost I don't know is this multicore
19:54
that we're looking at or is this single core the single core performance boost that I saw and I don't know if this 25%
20:01
boost that we have here in the article if this is representative of okay this is representative of um multi-core which
20:09
I think is exciting but maybe not as exciting as single core because single core is a true representation of how much better the chip has gotten when
20:15
they just throw more cores in you can't necessarily take advantage of all the cores all at the same time anyway so like you may never see like those
20:21
performance gains but like the single core performance you will definitely notice and I think I saw it was like 17%
20:26
by maxtech which is a a a substantial increase in Horsepower especially coming
20:32
from M1 I think M2 was like maybe like 14% faster I don't remember the number
20:38
I'm just making things up M3 was like another 14 or 15% faster and now we're getting to like 17 to 20% faster single
20:45
core speeds like we're getting to a point where the M4 may be like 50 or 60% faster than the M1 Max MacBook Pro which
20:54
I I think that's pretty tempting even if that's the only upgrade that you get I I think that could be enough to lure me
20:59
away plus I think that it's going to continue running cool like the M1 Max like the M2 was kind of hot the M3 was a
21:07
little bit better but the M4 might actually be like the M1 like to your comments Charlie I don't know if I've
21:13
ever heard my fans come on on my M1 Max MacBook Pro I can't actually remember a time when they came on even doing heavy
21:19
lifting and video work like they just never come on the M2 and the M3 remind me a little bit of the early days of the
21:25
iPad you remember that when they first uh the first retina iPad came out and it was the battery took had a huge battery
21:32
in it to make up for the all the extra power that the screen needed and it would take a long time to charge and it would get it would actually get kind of
21:38
warm uh which you know which was something the iPad had never done and then soon the next one came out I can't
21:44
remember which one they placed the iPad three after like eight months M yeah that was it that was it it was kind of a
21:50
weird I had that one and it was a kind of a weird dog but it was but that retina screen was
21:56
amazing yeah it was I uh I know they also had the first iPhone just cranked
22:02
to the max as far as like what they were doing with the chips that they put in there I mean that thing ran like as hot
22:08
as they could possibly make it just to make that phone actually work so I don't know if we want to talk about this now
22:14
but there was a big leak this week I mean one of the biggest that I think I've ever seen and I believe that this was real um and we have it in this story
22:22
but I kind of feel like to Tee It Up maybe you should talk about the box that was leaked first cuz I feel like that
22:29
ties into this story Charlie about this Russian YouTuber who got his hands on the actual MacBook
22:36
Pro yeah I uh I've been following this um it's I mean it seems very weird that
22:45
okay so what it is is the MacBook the M4 MacBook Pro is out and about and somebody got their hands on it and then
22:51
apparently as now it's shown up on eBay for sale or something like this uh I
22:57
don't what was the story about the Box oh yeah there was an unboxing video showing the thing so it's actually retail packaging the actual box itself
23:04
leaked on Twitter like two or three weeks ago there were pictures from this you or from this um uh Twitter user
23:12
shrimp Apple Pro who had shown some pictures of like the actual box and and the specs of the MacBook Pro and then
23:20
flash forward to this week there was a Russian YouTuber first of all I went to
23:26
this guy's Channel he has like 12 million subscribers it is it is mindblowing to me how many huge channels
23:32
exist on YouTube that you've never heard of and and this guy is Russian he speaks in Russian his audience is all
23:37
commenting in Russian right Russian Channel massive Channel never heard of it um and the guy has a MacBook Pro and
23:45
people were saying he has the new one the M4 MacBook Pro and that's Bonkers if you think about it so he somehow got his
23:51
hands on it and people were questioning whether or not this video was legit but like the other interesting part of that is that Apple doesn't officially do
23:58
business in Russia they completely pulled out after the after they started the war in Ukraine how did they get there it's
24:05
weird well that's if you're gonna sell something dodgy though you're gonna I mean why not sell it to a Russian right what are they gonna do Sor sorry any
24:11
Russians listening so the specs that this guy has in this machine match the pictures of the box that we saw so I I
24:17
think that the box and this guy's MacBook Pro are related I think that this is actually the MacBook Pro and
24:24
this is the one that we're going to see which by the way it comes in space black um it has three Thunderbolt ports now
24:31
instead of two for the lower-end models uh there are some other minor improvements that I saw that may or may
24:37
not be worth mentioning I don't know it says that the M4 will have an increase of two cores to the CPU same number of
24:43
the as the GPU and even the base model uh which didn't previously come in space black but the base model will also be
24:50
bumped up from 8 gigabytes to 16 gigabytes of memory that was the other big thing right so like the Bas being
24:55
that it has higher memory so this is pretty much I think that's a a symptom I
25:02
think that's going to be standard across the across the the line though across the Mac lineup and because Apple's
25:07
having to bump up the Apparently bump up the memory to cope with apple
25:12
intelligence so you know they everything's getting more RAM and about time too because it's been
25:18
absolutely years since uh since they went from I think the base was 4 gab for
25:25
for half until forever well ridiculously recently is anyone anyone in the chat can uh look that up and tell us I think
25:31
it was I think the last computer that still shipped with it was that uh non rtina MacBook Pro that they shipped
25:37
until like 2016 or something like that and that still had four in it but most of the computers switched to eight
25:43
around 10 years ago I think which and it's been the same ever
25:49
since and you hear people say that it's enough I I it probably is for a very
25:55
small group of people my wife I thought was one of the people in that group and I bought her the 8 gig MacBook
26:03
Air and she constantly gets airor messages that she doesn't have enough
26:09
memory and all she does is use it for teaching and she browses the web she
26:14
uses Google Google Docs she like she is the person that you would think that that computer would have enough memory
26:22
for and she continually gets messages that she's out of memory so I hope that
26:27
this is something that they do across the board I mean for the price of these computers I feel like and you know this is just gravy for for TC there's no way
26:36
that an extra eight gigs of memory is going to cost is going to add any kind of
26:42
substantial cost to the price of but that's that's not why they do it well it's partly why they do it but partly
26:47
it's because that sweet upgrade money you know that's that's what it mean a tactic to drive you to a higher price machine
26:55
like that's why they do it and I would even argue that 128 gigs for the iPhone
27:01
is kind of becoming the new 8 gigabytes of memory um 128 gigs for storage is
27:07
like you run out of that so fast and the phone's taking 4K video it's like it doesn't take very long especially
27:13
because most people are not Savvy enough to know well most people will try to
27:18
transfer their old iPhone to their new iPhone which is actually a terrible idea because it brings all the crft with you
27:24
and all your photos that are stored on that phone come along for the ride really you should just start fresh and
27:29
download everything again so that all your photos stay in iCloud because otherwise you're going to run out of spa oh you're just going to be perpetually
27:35
out of space which maybe just maybe is exactly what T where TC wants you to be
27:42
because now you're primed it's like you're like oh man my phone's I just got a new phone I'm already out of space
27:47
next time I should get like the 256 version you know it's like the self-perpetuating problem and then
27:52
eventually you end up with a 2 tab iPhone and then that's full and now you're paying for the 6 terabytes of iCloud storage which is only like what
27:59
$40 a month yeah I pay for it seems reasonable doesn't it it worked on me oh
28:06
six I'm resisting I'm resisting what's that I think you pay for six Griffin I pay for I think two which is which is
28:12
what you get with that the Apple One $40 plan MH yeah same that's what I have but
28:18
I paid for it before Apple One existed I paid for the for the for the terabyte but then Apple one came along and it was
28:23
more it was cheap it wasn't very much and you can share it and it means I mean you can use it for so much stuff what
28:30
what what are the Apple uh Apple One services do you use because I I genuinely play the Apple news crosswords
28:36
like every day I do the guardian crossword I it was I use the Fitness
28:42
Plus which I like most days I do yoga from Fitness Plus um I use the music I
28:47
don't use Apple TV much because the app is so bad and because when you watch it on the iPad it's darker than watching it
28:53
in any other video service so I have my own uh my own ways of of getting video
28:59
um and what else is there and then all the storage I guess that's about it yeah
29:06
and backup I mean I use uh I use iCloud ioud iCloud drive and iCloud backup
29:12
which is fantastic I know we all do I mean what a racket man they're making so much money on that and there and once
29:18
you're in there there's no way out there is if you're in the family plan it's even worse because you know if you want
29:25
to jump yourself you can kind of deal with it and it's a bit of a hassle but no big deal but then you've got to tell everybody in your family oh you got to
29:31
move all your photos you got to you know you got to stop you got to take your playlists over to Spotify or title or
29:36
something and like no way so you're stuck you're stuck yeah and if you run out of space all sorts of stuff on your
29:43
machine will stop working like you won't be able to send text messages I mean there there there's a lot of stuff that's tied into how much space you have
29:49
available I've been trying to figure out a way around this um as somebody takes a lot of video and photos I am trying to
29:56
figure out how I can store my my my photos I keep in in in uh
30:02
the photos app videos though I've been trying to skirt the photos app because
30:09
they automatically get piped into iCloud which takes up all your storage way faster and I'm like how do
30:15
you what what is out there that allows you to store all your videos makes them as accessible as photos does makes them
30:22
easy to um uh stream on your Apple TV I
30:28
mean there's just nothing man there's nothing I mean Apple has it so locked in their Serv so good there's nowhere to go
30:34
tell let me give you a let me tell you Ean like level remixes said in the in
30:40
the YouTube chat let's go Nas and it's a good idea that if you try you have a sonology yeah I have a
30:46
Synology and it's still not as good put everything on yeah but here's the problem
30:53
with to download anything it's already there that's true that's true the problem though is when you go to access
30:58
it and the Synology is so underpowered when it comes to streaming 4K content
31:04
and if you're taking 4K videos you store them on your NZ yeah they're there but if you want to watch them you can't
31:10
because the genius thing that that that Apple does is it it converts it transcodes all of your videos and it
31:16
will give you the one that your bandwidth can handle the Synology doesn't do that if they would add that it would it would be much better but not
31:23
only that is can't you put Plex on this anology then oh even worse yeah I do
31:30
have Plex I've tried Plex I've tried the sonology photos app there's another there's another app that is actually
31:35
worked pretty well called Infuse that I think I love that I use that every day
31:41
okay so that one work that's what I used to watch everything that's one of the best ones that I have found for actually encoding your videos on the hardware in
31:47
which you're watching it Plex oh my goodness I'm a Plex premium um uh member
31:54
what a dog and like all of their photo video functionality that they used to promote has taken a huge backseat like
32:01
they are really focusing on basically becoming like the next like tub or um
32:08
Amazon uh freey like they're trying to become a video streaming site which I'm like dude I paid you for a license to
32:15
manage my content and now you've like abandoned all those features and you're focused on ad supported streaming
32:22
content which I can get from any of these other services that exist why did I pay you so there's like no good way to
32:28
do this and I have been on a search like I'm not I'm not even kidding for 18 months I have been on this search to like figure out a way to manage content
32:36
outside of the photos app and and have it be accessible from all my devices and
32:41
to be able to stream 4K content to my Apple TV because I want to watch it on my TV not even the Apple TV 4K streams
32:49
your personal content in 4k you're going to just make me get on a tangent I'm already on one I won't go down that
32:55
road I think we're uh I think we're going to off topic I when we talking about the the the leaked M4 welcome back
33:02
Charlie so the I just got one more thing to say about this this MacBook Pro about how whether it this leaked one that
33:09
showed up in Russia I think it could be legit be for the reason that uh it's
33:15
fully boxed which makes me think it's you know falling off the back of a FedEx truck or something a UPS truck but uh
33:22
you remember Apple started um surface shipping lots of things uh that's their one of their things that they're doing
33:28
to take down their carbon footprint instead of flying everything across from China in a plane so they I think maybe
33:35
having this uh yeah they've been bringing stuff across on a ship and you with the max you can kind of do it
33:41
because these are going to look exactly the same as the previous Max apart from they're going to have M4 written on them so you know the box it's not like uh you
33:46
know a new shaped iPhone that's going to be you know it's almost impossible to to ship without and and stockpile without
33:54
somebody seeing it uh so yeah maybe this one just kind of went missing I did hear
33:59
a theory that like maybe there's like some like sort of under there probably is like some sort of underground
34:04
pipeline for people in Russia to be able to like buy Black Market MacBooks and all that and they just accidentally got
34:10
an unreleased like a truckload of unreleased MacBooks not even because the box is the same and they didn't even
34:16
realize and then it fell into the hands and became this whole story of the YouTubers getting them and selling them
34:21
on eBay I don't know what happened but this is certainly one of the biggest leaks
34:26
that we've seen and now the benchmark scores are coming out of course and we know that it uh is going to come in um
34:33
in space black few weeks right all right what's that nothing I thought you were
34:39
GNA say something else and uh I was just trying to finish a sentence so carry on well you were wrong but I appreciate
34:46
you trying yeah I was and uh and now we know about the three Thunderbolt ports um which on the Bas model wouldn't have
34:52
been possible before and uh I I'm on the fence on space black I have to be honest
34:58
I don't every time I see the new space black I feel like it's not a great color so I might go back to Silver for the
35:03
first time in a long time um I really love the space gray the space gray that the M1 Max came in I also wasn't a huge
35:11
fan then I saw in person and I was like wow this is actually very beautiful and understated um but space black I feel
35:17
like is a little too dark and I'm bummed that Apple actually got rid of space gray to switch to space black so we'll see which one I go for it sounds to me
35:23
like I'm the only one really interested in partaking of this new machine that's the way sounds I don't want to put any words in your mouth
35:30
Charlie but no I I I'm sticking with the one I've got it's still more than enough for me I it still feels new and you got
35:37
to remember my last Mac was an iMac that lasted for me for 11 or 12 years so uh
35:42
but so before I finally got rid of it and uh yes I'm happy and I'm also using
35:49
a a 2012 MacBook Air with Linux running on it and that's a there we go that's the
35:55
Charlie I know yeah I'm surprised you have it running on an
36:00
iPad I tried okay it's not possible for for years
36:07
Charlie tried to convince us that working on an iPad for productivity was a normal way of of of living your life
36:13
and it sounds like you finally came around sounds like you I was wrong yeah
36:18
you didit you did make it work you did make it work it just yeah I mean it worked it worked it and and it's it's a
36:24
lot better now than it was when I was doing it then it was a real pain uh now it's a lot easier but yeah it's just not
36:30
there it's just so much easier to do a lot of if you're doing if you're working with a lot of different things at once it's just a lot easier to do it on a Mac
36:36
yeah and and that was kind of always my position for me that's why I never wanted to do it I'm like yes you can make it work but it's so much work it's
36:44
like there's so there's so many compromises you have to make and especially for the type of work I was
36:50
doing at that time like you needed to have access to multiple windows all in the same screen and be able to move them around and so for me like it it it I
36:56
could never make it work for my use cases and now here I am with the M1 Max it's it's totally everything that I
37:03
probably need Griffin's editing the show now I'm not even doing YouTube right now I keep thinking I'm coming back baby I'm
37:09
on my way and I want to re re um boot my channel and for that I would actually
37:15
need um to start editing videos again but to be honest I think my M1 Max is
37:21
probably everything that I probably need even for doing 4K editing how much RAM have you got in there 32
37:28
gigabytes and storage uh two terabytes it's a great machine that's
37:34
going to be fine I know I mean it yes if if we're dealing if we're looking at what I actually need I think that's
37:40
probably true but I would love Wi-Fi 7 that would be nice I would why not get
37:46
the faster exp some black some space black spray paint and just do it yourself yeah okay I hadn't considered
37:54
that as a viable solution but that would be a lot cheaper wouldn't it and it
37:59
would probably help the resale value don't you think when I think I would I mean I would buy it yeah well look maybe
38:06
we can work something out for for 200 bucks I'll I'll paint it space black for you we can even do the one with the the
38:13
the the glitter undercoat so it's nice and sparkly for you oh yeah yeah I'm into that all right deal all right look
38:19
before we move on uh get a wife don't even G blandon's talking about dongles
38:25
here in the chat can we get the moderator in here I don't know everyone to hear the word dongle me we we got to get that word
38:32
banned we can't do we can't we can't talk about dongles can't talk about dongles um before we move on something
38:40
that is not a dongle and won't immediately infuriate you is the cult cloth are you familiar with cult cloth
38:47
Charlie I should send you some although you're in Europe oh man the shipping is going to be a killer shipping to Europe
38:53
is outrageous mhm the cat cloth this is like Apple's cleaning cloth but but not
38:58
cleaning cloth but but cult is that right the cult version yeah I I have heard some people say that they use
39:04
these on their very expensive coatings on their apple um on their Studio
39:11
displays now I would never endorse that because I I've never I've never tried that and those crystals that are adhere
39:17
to that screen are like $1,000 upgrades so I've heard some people say it works I've never tried it uh tried it at your
39:23
own risk I will say though that we just upgraded our carry cloth to version 2.0
39:30
dude it is so much better it is so and the last one was great this one's even
39:35
better I'm getting ahead of myself though if you need a way to keep your gadgets your glasses Charlie look at
39:41
look at your glasses I can barely even see your eyes oh that's better maybe it was just the light are they it was the
39:47
light I keep my glasses I'm very I'm fanatical about keeping my glasses clean and maybe I do need one of these I I'm
39:53
going to I will send you some free of charge all you have to pay shipping is which is $75 uh you live in Barcelona it's going
40:01
to be extra and uh maybe I'll have it delivered by your nude mailman that might cost a little bit extra though I'll look into that Co he does it for
40:08
free he does it for free now which com an understanding you don't want if you don't want him to he just shows up there with especially if I don't want to he's
40:15
like I got a package for you my friend so C cloth is the absolute best way to keep the gadgets in your life um your
40:22
glasses your cameras your television your MacBook Pro your iPad absolutely Spark sparkling clean like the day that
40:28
you bought them they are continually surprising at how well they work they just work so well they they are the best
40:34
they are the best there is nothing better out there our cooth Duo has a dual fiber design and uh the like the
40:41
front side has a a short fiber actually you could consider to be the the backside if you want I guess there's not really a front or a back there's just
40:47
two sides there's a short fiber design that's really great for keeping your screen cleaned it especially if you want
40:52
to use a little bit of screen cleaner like the the fibers won't soak up um too much the screen cleaner which is what
40:58
you want when you're cleaning a screen and then there's a long fiber design which is just like an absolute destroyer
41:04
of grease and gme them on your keyboard uh bigger surfaces um the back of your
41:10
or the top of your MacBook Pro your television screen I mean absolutely anything it just reaches down into all
41:16
the cracks and crevices I always joke it keeps the cracks in your life sparkling clean that is actually true so I got
41:22
this new um iPhone case and you can see it kind of has like a rim around it
41:28
and no normal microfiber cloth can clean in the depths of that crack there's just
41:34
absolutely no way but Coco CL can all the Little Fibers reach down in there and pull everything out and the the
41:41
cracks my cracks my friends are sparkling clean how about yours how about your cracks that's what I want to know and if you want to partake if if
41:50
I've convinced you or if you're just like you know what I don't even care about the co co cloth I just want to support the show um which when you buy
41:56
Co cloth you're doing both head on over to co cloth. co cloth. like I said you you'll get our new car cloth 2.0 which
42:04
develops like this cleaning patina as you use it which makes it even more effective um on the go and it will also
42:11
have the power to reach down into your cracks and pull out all the grime C cloth. and use code codcast to checkout
42:17
with any order $20 plus you'll get an an extra carry cloth which will be the new version um with your order just use code
42:25
codcast at checkout c.co we've sold thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of these so
42:33
you're going to be in good company and you know what I I think I've only ever received like two returns ever I mean
42:40
people just don't were they filthy they really really are they stained uh no they were actually um pretty much brand
42:47
new I think one of them the person had moved or something and so like the pack just came back to us and then one of
42:53
them I think we had run low on stock this happens all the time way too often
42:59
and the guy just got his order really late he's like I he's like I got something else I just don't need these anymore so he returned them so but I
43:06
don't think I've ever received a return from anyone that has been disappointed with the quality so because they're just
43:12
that good I mean like I say I always I'm sorry I feel like I'm broken record there's nothing else that's better there
43:18
is nothing else that's better I have never found anything that works better which is why people don't return them because they're just that good
43:24
absolutely um cleaning potatoes all all day you can clean your apples you can clean your other fruits and vegetables
43:31
now I wouldn't use them on your on your delicate Electronics after that but I've had people clean their cars they work
43:38
great on dashboards um if you're in the mood you can fashion them into like a loin cloth
43:44
of some kind and wear that in the summertime maybe that's a suggestion we can make to your nude friends Charlie
43:50
you're you're close and personal nude friends that traversed Barcelona with no clothes on maybe we should tell that
43:56
story but I feel like we don't have time um no yeah let's just move on and forget that it ever happened Griffin
44:03
should we send it over to you to talk about iPhone SE does anyone care probably not but
44:08
we're gonna talk about it well there is there is one interesting part of this story uh the iPhone S4's in-house Apple
44:15
5G modem could deliver major power savings uh the the iPhone se4 will have
44:20
a new design that'll ditch the home button and it'll sort of uh mimic the iPhone 14 in that regard it'll use a lot
44:27
of that design but it will stand out for being the first product in Apple's portfolio to use its in-house 5G modem
44:34
um a report from Mac Rumors says that it'll have the iPhone 16's a18 chip and
44:40
support 8 gigabyt of RAM for Apple intelligence uh it'll have the a 48 megapixel rear camera and a 12 meixel
44:47
front shooter so it'll it'll be getting a big camera upgrade first one in a while uh but it'll have their Apple's
44:54
new modem the company spent billions of dollars developing its own 5G modem following the acquisition of Intel's 5G
45:00
business in 2019 Apple's baseband will handle cellular wifi Bluetooth and GPS
45:06
connectivity allinone on the iPhone se4 The Source claims the new modem will
45:12
reduce power consumption boosting battery life and depending on its performance in real real world use apple
45:18
might expand it to the other devices in the coming years so this this has been sort of like off and on for a few years
45:24
there there rumors that like uh they had to renew their relationship with qualcom for extra few years because their their
45:31
their mod of team was just lagging behind but it was sort of like a will they won't day thing and it seems like it might actually come true um the
45:38
iPhone se4 will have a spring 2025 release uh given the major upgrades for
45:44
the model it might support a higher price tag than the current 429
45:49
price go I know that for many in this audience that this phone doesn't uh
45:55
appeal to their sense of taste but it's good to know that for those of you who are price conscious like this is an
46:01
option sorry Charli I cut you off I was just going to say that I agree with Griffin that this is an interesting that
46:06
the that the modem is the most interesting part of this because it Apple has been trying to make their
46:12
modem for for years and years and years uh like you said and the fact that it
46:17
might be going into other devices do you think that maybe once Apple finally you know gets
46:24
this thing rolling properly and then they were going going to start building the modem into the into the chips into the system on a chip which is going to
46:31
mean it uses a lot less power and that they will finally start putting in
46:36
Max this is my prediction that's pretty cool my wish that's pretty cool I mean
46:42
if they can make it draw if they can get it to
46:47
draw how do I phrase this if they can fix doesn't draw a lot of power thank
46:52
you for saying what I could not say then I think that that would be a real possibility I think there' be a lot of
46:58
people who would be interested in having a cell modem in their MacBook Pro or whatever Mac they get I mean why not
47:03
right that would be so good in an iPad I mean it's it's one of the things that makes me take an iPad on a trip instead
47:09
of a instead of a Mac because you just can just pull it out and whip it out and stop playing with it oh boy look I don't
47:15
know why they haven't done it yet isn't it kind of perplexing as to why we don't have this in a Mac at this point it
47:22
seems because especially since the Apple silic transition like that's that like
47:27
it is basically just an iPad like it is architecturally identical to an iPad but now I think they will have literally no
47:33
excuse once they start making their own chips what what what stuck out to me is that like people have only been like
47:38
talking about this in the context of like the cellular connectivity but I didn't know that they want they want to
47:45
include cellular Wi-Fi Bluetooth and GPS all in the same chip I don't know if
47:52
that was that's a new detail or what but yeah I haven't could be a huge consolidation
47:57
MH and it yeah I mean I guess it makes sense maybe this is why it's taking them so long to do
48:03
it those things maybe I'm just misunderstanding how how the article is written or maybe our our writer maybe
48:10
maybe something is Lost in Translation there but that would be huge definitely not our writer definitely not our writer all right
48:17
certainly not uh what do we got next oh should we talk about Apple
48:24
intelligence Griffin the the Marquee feature of the iPhone 16 and 16 pro and
48:32
pro Max I just can't get enough of it boy what a great addition to the phone so happy I to the iPhone 16 you know us
48:38
both Americans know that Apple intelligence is wonderful well I've never tou Charlie have you tried it uh I've never I've
48:44
actually never touched it so I I should have renounced my citizen Citizenship and also moved to Europe um and I was
48:51
just making that comment a little sarcastically because they announced these features alongside the iPhone and
48:59
it seems like we're going to get a small handful of them this year and the rest are going to launch seemingly for the
49:06
iPhone 17 so we got duped big time but we do have some coming down the pipe well you know I mean I mean the
49:13
important thing to know is that like you know even people who are buying their iPhone 15 or 15 Pro or people who are buying the iPhone 16 are going to keep
49:19
those phones several years like it's only a very small minority of people who are you know who it's a very small
49:25
minority of people who actually buy a new phone at every single year so yeah uh and also you know we we justest
49:31
about how Europe isn't getting these features but uh you're not you're not missing that much I'll be honest I mean you're missing I view it as a bonus no I
49:38
think it's better I'd rather not I don't want them and the fact that I I won't have to worry about uh switching them
49:44
off they just won't be there I'm very happy about that I'm sure they'll be collecting your data in the undercurrent
49:50
of your phone activity anyway you just won't see it happening directly yeah so that's
49:57
clearly not true but go ahead griffet under the story uh you know the these features are in the iOS 18.1 beta and I
50:03
had a piece on on cul of Mac over the weekend it was it was pretty big where I just tried out i' I've tried out all of
50:09
the the new features and you know the video is a really this is a really good video to watch because you can see all of them in action here but um I'm going
50:16
to summarize the the top ones here so like they have the writing tools these like proof read or change the tone of or
50:22
like reformat your text and these are available like anywhere that any app that has like the standard textt field
50:29
you know that brings up a keyboard pretty much so like all of Apple's apps and pretty a lot of third party apps
50:35
some of them might have their own weird uh text input method where it doesn't work in but pretty much everywhere where
50:40
you can write you can use the writing tools um the proof reading rewriting and
50:46
summary stuff do it's decent I don't know if I'll use it too often because I'm already a professional writer but um
50:55
what I what does really impress me is its ability to restructure like ordinary
51:00
writing into a table like just select you know bring up the writing tools on
51:06
an article or like a draft or like a piece of notes or an email and then you select everything and then you like you
51:12
know switch change the format to a table and it'll reorganize the information across like a two-dimensional Matrix
51:18
like columns and rows and all that and organize it and yeah we're really missing out over here in Europe huh
51:24
yeah time to move M you have to build a table Yourself by hand like a peasant um
51:32
table peasant uh the notification summaries are pretty good uh they have like I'd
51:38
say about a 90% hit rate usually it can like accurately summarize a big string
51:43
of texts that you get in a row but like occasionally it's missing like that one important piece of context and comes up
51:49
with something totally wrong and it's kind of hilarious when he gets that but like isn't that doesn't that make itth
51:55
not worth using I mean if if you have if you can't trust it 100% then how can you use it as a how can you rely on it as a
52:00
tool it's like if you were using uh I don't know Photoshop and every once in a while you know it would uh just not save
52:07
a layer or something oh we don't need that layer that's fine well well when it's wrong it's so terribly wrong that
52:13
you immediately know something is up like if you're like for example if you have like a group chat where like a
52:18
bunch of people are talking about like the plot of a show and it summarizes them and it like summarizes them as if
52:23
they are real events that have happened you can be like oh okay nobody I know was actually actually like you know died
52:29
in a Calamity in an airplane crash recently so that's probably you know not something yeah in in this case is
52:35
actually kind of funny I've seen some stories about this uh but as as a general idea you know if if you're using
52:41
this to reply an email to your boss or something and it makes up something about how you've been sleeping with your
52:47
boss's I don't know husband or something like this then well and and you don't
52:52
proofread it because why would you bother proofreading it you're already too lazy to write an email then uh off you go you're
52:59
fired yeah thanks Apple intelligence yeah thanks Tim thanks T
53:06
Apple let's see there are the in photos there's an image cleanup tool that's a I
53:12
would say on par with like the uh intelligent repair tool in pixel Mater or so so like you know it this is a this
53:18
is a tool where you can edit a picture and you can just like Circle something and it'll remove it from the image and
53:24
it does it does okay if like it you know the the thing you're erasing is like a small like blemish and it it doesn't
53:31
overlap anything important in the image it'll do whatever you ask it to so you can like take a picture I have an
53:36
example in there of like a a picture that someone took of like one of the one of the balloons during the Macy's
53:43
Thanksgiving Day Parade and like the balloon is obviously like the middle half of the picture but I I circled it
53:50
and and it just filled in with a building but really poorly okay it'll do whatever you ask you to but I'm sure it
53:57
will but the question is does it look natural or not no um like if you if you
54:02
zoom in it looks pretty obviously uh messed up but one thing it doesn't do is
54:08
it doesn't replace faces if you if you Circle a face it'll just pixelate whatever the horrific results were
54:14
underneath oh which can actually be kind of an interesting feature like if you
54:19
want to post a picture to social media but one person wants to remain anonymous like I guess if I were to uh post about
54:27
this very podcast recording on Mastadon I could I could Circle Charlie's face and I would pixelate it and keep him
54:32
keep him anonymous there yeah that actually is interested in this this reminds me of uh last time I saw Aon
54:39
when we were at the at the uh um Las Vega CES he had an app and uh oh yeah
54:45
what it would do was what was that app called it was called nudifier n what would do tell us what it
54:53
would do we had so much fun with that app I mean it was you could use it for unnecessary censorship so you would like
55:01
it would you would draw like an area of the image and it would it would basically make it look like your
55:06
appendage had been uh had been pixelated over and we had tons of fun with that
55:12
app we were using that app people were asking us to stop like please stop using this app because we were posting the
55:17
pictures like the culac Instagram uh experiments and unnecessary censorship dude that that that app I think is still
55:24
around I should download it because it's been far too long different days I think yeah that might be true and uh we had a
55:31
ton of fun with that app now I'm now I got to look is nudifier still in business let's just see it they well now
55:37
when you hear an AI powered app called nudifier my mind thought that was something completely different and much
55:42
worse which is a yeah that's true no God that's what you're gonna find way more
55:48
way more innocent than it sounds oh man I think it's gone you know it was a niche app it was
55:54
a niche app um but boy was it funny we had a great time with that app yep I
56:00
don't see it that's too bad 2013 was a different time I'm going to skip over a few of these let's see Siri now has
56:07
extensive knowledge about Apple products they've trained Siri or some sort of
56:12
language model on the Apple support documentation website you know so you can ask it h how do I share a Wi-Fi
56:19
password and it'll like instantly pop up like instructions that are you know I read over them very clear very easy to
56:27
understand uh really could put me out of a job if we're not careful but then I asked it how to customize the camera
56:34
control and it didn't work at all it just gave me Google search results yeah so it seems like they haven't trained
56:40
the feature on the iOS 18 version of the uh iPhone user guide yet and I was
56:46
thinking like this is actually this might actually be a recurring problem because like apple updates like their
56:52
their support documentation like the very same day that a new software update is released or a new phone is released
56:57
or products are out but it takes a lot of time to train and test these like
57:03
large language models and and this feature especially I can imagine so like it I think it's going to be a recurring
57:09
problem where every time there's a software update it'll be like an extra month or so until siries product
57:15
knowledge is updated so it's kind of annoying as well because that's the time when you really need to help with the new stuff yeah
57:22
yeah so I guess it just goes to show that everybody should continue finding their how-to and guides at cul
57:29
of.com okay beautiful please we work that in there that's important yeah please please keep going there we need
57:35
all the clicks that we can get and you know even if you don't need to go there just just go there anyway just stop by
57:40
refresh a few times and then you can leave a few times each day just come refresh click on an add or two please
57:47
and then also that yeah yeah so there there are more features I think I think I ran through like the the most
57:52
interesting five but if you want to read about the five more you can check out the article of the video I've been I've been moderately impressed I feel like
57:59
it's a good first step they'll be rolling out like the the actually interesting or at least the most interesting stuff later which is the the
58:06
allegedly smarter Siri and image playground which is gross but I'll have to talk about at some point I guess the
58:13
Siri thing's going to be is going to be so important for me I really hope the
58:19
dictation gets better I feel like it's as bad as ever in iOS 18 and they've
58:26
said nothing about improving the dictation I know I know which I think that's got to be improved though I mean that's one of the things that uh like
58:32
chat GPT is so good at I know it's it's it's it's outrageously good and you
58:38
would think that if they're going to be adopting gpts into their OS like that would be I mean
58:46
out of all the things they could possibly do with AI like that's the one Marquee feature that everyone would I I
58:54
would imagine would think is obvious it's like let's make dictation and the phone's ability to understand you so
59:01
much better and this is your because it doesn't matter how smart Siri is if Siri doesn't if Siri can't accurately
59:06
translate what you're saying in the first place and I guess I will revisit one more feature there's a there's a new
59:11
like call transcription and like notes transcription feature that's Apple intelligence powered and it's it works
59:19
fast but it doesn't work very accurately like I get much better results using whisper than using the Apple int
59:27
live like whisper I think it might be an open AI product okay but it's it's their
59:34
like speech detex thing I use it like literally every week for making the subtitles for my videos you know I
59:40
export out a final cut then I drag that video into uh like there's a Mac app
59:46
like interface for it called Mac whisper that's great like even even the smallest
59:52
whisper model is so good around punctuation and capitalizing proper
59:57
nouns like it's so good at that if you just pronounce something the right way like go to settings accessibility
1:00:04
whatever and it can just tell from the tone of your voice that oh this should be capitalized and this should be punctuated a special way wow whereas
1:00:12
meanwhile Siri can't even set a timer yeah yeah or or the example I always use
1:00:19
is like I was telling it a sentence with the word has in it like he has to go to the store and it changed has into like
1:00:26
hos Capital H SS like the avocado and it's so dumb it doesn't even understand
1:00:32
the context of the words that you're using within within your sentence what okay what did he have to
1:00:38
go to the store for was it an avocado I mean that yes he was going to get avocados so maybe it was super
1:00:44
intelligent no I don't remember and that example was completely made up but it
1:00:50
had nothing to do with the store at all like there was absolutely no reason why it should think that I'm trying to use
1:00:57
um the name of a of an avocado instead of the word has absolutely no reason it
1:01:03
does that kind of stuff all the time you would think they'd be able to dial that stuff out but we'll see um all
1:01:11
right I think we've got well I was going to mention when it
1:01:17
comes to Apple AI Apple intelligence otherwise I'm saying apple apple
1:01:23
intelligence um there was a story out this week by an unknown writer with a small
1:01:29
audience name Mark Gman and this article was actually
1:01:34
pretty good he talked about a bunch of things um when it comes to app I keep
1:01:40
calling it Apple AI Apple intelligence just just just do it should I just roll
1:01:45
with apple AI I'm just gonna do it do it sounds great all right Apple AI he says that they have plans to release it
1:01:52
October 28th uh at least some of the features um in iOS
1:01:57
18.1 and if Mark's saying October 28th I think it's probably going to land
1:02:03
October 28th so you won't have to wait that much longer to try Apple intelligence for yourself now there is a
1:02:09
rollout schedule there is a product roadmap and not all of the Apple intelligence features are going to be
1:02:15
included in this first roll out um I think the ones that maybe you you enumerated here in your story Griffin
1:02:22
like those might be coming I actually don't know and app all of those features are going to be an 181 okay I guess
1:02:29
that's how you got access to them because you're using the beta so Apple even though they they positioned this
1:02:36
the the Apple AI as a Marky feature it didn't ship with the phone we still
1:02:42
don't have it we don't know what features are coming and when like we know we're going to get some on October 28th according to German but it seems
1:02:49
like they're going to roll out for the rest of the year and this kind of ties into the point of his article which was
1:02:56
I'll scroll up to the top here so for those of you watching Apple slowly moves away from its annual product release strategy um I'll save you having to read
1:03:03
the whole article although you should it's pretty good but essentially what he's saying is Apple just has way too much stuff they can't keep on these
1:03:10
yearly release schedules anymore and they are slowly moving away from doing these big releases once a year to kind
1:03:16
of um uh staggering the releases so that they're happening over the course of the
1:03:21
whole year and there's not going to be like this big dump of products and software all at one time like we have in
1:03:27
years past because there's just no way they can keep up with the Cadence because they have so much stuff I mean look how many OSS they have now and how
1:03:33
many products they have now and it seems like they're already kind of straining under the weight of what they're trying
1:03:40
to accomplish we didn't get a new Apple watch Ultra this year we just got a new color now maybe they were never planning
1:03:46
to release a new release new Apple watch Ultra but they did in previous years they went from Apple watch Ultra 1 a
1:03:52
year later to Apple watch Ultra 2 um and then we went Apple watch Ultra 2 to Apple watch Ultra 2 new color which by
1:03:59
the way go look at it first if you're thinking about buying it I thought it looked absolutely beautiful in the
1:04:05
pictures I went and saw it at the store didn't love it didn't love it decided
1:04:10
not to buy it I was super excited to go get myself a new Apple watch Ultra and
1:04:15
decided to stay with the the the natural titanium so just throw that in there for
1:04:20
um good measure so we may this may also mean that we get
1:04:28
releases for some products on a more regular basis like apple seems to be
1:04:33
doing MacBook Pro updates more often than they used to because they used to do those like once every like two years
1:04:39
and it seems like now we are getting them every like 8 to 12 months so it seems like things are in like this weird state of flux which in some in some ways
1:04:46
is actually good for us like I would prefer that they do a new mapup Pro once
1:04:51
every you know 10 to 12 months um as opposed to their putting their efforts
1:04:57
into the the big the big products the iPhone and the the MacBooks everybody they're in control of
1:05:03
their own destiny with the Mac because of Apple silicon they can they can release their most important products on
1:05:08
the schedule that works best you know the the the the the MacBook Pro is the
1:05:14
iPhone of the Mac lineup it's it's the bread and butter it's the one everybody buys that should get an update every
1:05:20
year you would think so you would think so now that's one product I'm not gonna be upgrading every year but maybe every
1:05:27
two years or something so anyway we'll link to the story in the um show notes if you want to check it out there's some
1:05:34
good intelligence in here um from my close personal friend Mark Gman who
1:05:39
almost came on the show a long time ago long long long long time ago but I think I scared him away when he was a scrappy
1:05:47
young writer which he still is I think he was when he was at when he was at 9 to-5 M that's where he used to be yeah
1:05:54
yeah that's right got we extended our friendly arm across the bridge and he slapped it away he did he swatted it
1:06:01
away and uh I haven't spoken to him since I'm not sure what I did wrong Mark forgive me what have I done nothing I
1:06:09
think that Mark is I mean great writer I know we joke
1:06:14
about him all the time where where would we where would we be without Mark but I think the thing that makes him not want to come on the
1:06:21
show is that we smile so much I think that that that action with his mouth
1:06:26
going upwards instead of just like you know like downward like that I think it might be painful for him or there's something about it that he seems to have
1:06:32
an aversion to and so he just doesn't want to come on because like what if we say something that he finds to be mildly
1:06:38
humorous and his face tries to make that shape and he's just like a he's like in pain you know and now it's like this
1:06:44
weird awkward that's why Tim Cook doesn't do podcasts either he would have to he would he would feel compelled to
1:06:49
convey a human emotion which dud as I said before CEOs are incapable of have you noticed that when Tim Cook told it's
1:06:55
a little like the a puppet like the th like the Thunderbirds looks like his
1:07:00
Jaws moving but it's not actually Jo you know straight up and down yeah that's an interesting
1:07:06
observation oh man yeah Tim Cook looking natural just try to imagine that I don't
1:07:12
know if I've seen it uh it reminds me of that Meme where was he at was he at the Oscars or something there's there's like
1:07:19
a a literal meme that you can find of it where they made a joke about him and the camera cuts to him and he the face that
1:07:25
he was was making was one of the most awkward painful faces I've seen any human express it was like like you know
1:07:34
like he was trying to like make a like a smiling face but he just couldn't he couldn't actually Muster that because
1:07:40
those muscles had been so unused for so long right like he he couldn't reactivate them in that moment and it's like the same face that
1:07:47
he probably gives to leakers that they've captured you know the last the last time his his face smiled was when
1:07:53
he opened his first spreadsheet on an Apple 2 when he was like you know 12 years old oh the joy a the unimagined
1:08:02
Bliss of I can make my own shirs or when uh Fox conon finally conceded and let
1:08:08
him have that that 0.001% or uh point one cent of a
1:08:14
discount you know on that one component that they've been negotiating for like 17 years all right look we'll wrap up
1:08:20
with this we're way out out in the weeds no one even knows where we are I'm not sure we'll or find our way back but I do
1:08:26
want to do a follow-up airpods 4 so I really need to make a YouTube video
1:08:32
about this which I can't because I don't have an M4 Max MacBook Pro so I need that machine first but I'm I'm trying to
1:08:38
pull one together for my YouTube channel but in the meantime I did an update basically like a full-on first
1:08:43
impressions review of the airpods 4 and what I thought about them they're a
1:08:49
great product kind of quirky the ANC has definitely has problems so following up on that last point the ANC so if you
1:08:57
will recall from last episode one of the problems that I had been
1:09:04
having with thec version of airpods 4 is this weird fluctuation in volume right
1:09:12
and we were thinking maybe it's the conversation awareness well I have an
1:09:17
update I turned off all the transparency everything you know transpar
1:09:22
transparency mode off active noise cancellation off all the features off it is still doing it there are really weird
1:09:31
waves of volume uh increases and decreases where the volume is actually
1:09:36
not going up and down the airpods themselves are actively raising and
1:09:41
lowering their volume is this happening to anyone else does anyone in the chat have the airpods 4 like it seems to me
1:09:47
like it must be a software problem but it happens all the time and I there's a
1:09:53
there's a there's a setting where they will automatically change the volume for you uh depending on what's going on
1:10:00
around you so yeah that's the conversation awareness isn't it no no it's different adaptive audio setting
1:10:05
the Adaptive adaptive audio is turned off it's turned off it's really easy to see which of those modes are turned on
1:10:12
and off um when you uh press and hold the airpods volume in Control Center and
1:10:19
I have everything turned off and it's still happening it used to only happen when I had conversation awareness turned
1:10:25
on or adaptive audio whatever but all those things are turned off and it's still happening and I don't know if it's
1:10:31
a software bug or if there's a problem with my actual airpods but it's driving me nuts man I I'll be walking down the
1:10:37
road and all of a sudden the the audio ducks like 40% and it thinks that
1:10:43
something's going on and and then there's nothing and then it cranks it way up and it makes it even louder than it was than the the volume I was
1:10:50
listening to so personalized volume says kfn from the CH you're going to love our
1:10:57
new personalized volume you just don't know what's going to what volume level it's going to be I don't know man is
1:11:04
that a real feature I now I can't tell if you're trying to troll me or you're actually Mak maybe it's like one of the hearing protection features maybe I
1:11:10
don't know are those on the regular airpods okay caveman's saying no that's the setting the personalized
1:11:18
volume okay is that under airpod settings or is that under sound settings
1:11:23
I don't know loudness alert I don't know he says no that's the setting that
1:11:29
can adjust the outside volume the outside okay the volume that that yeah that's that's what I was
1:11:35
thinking about uh I I like that it's it's like when you there's the the one where the noise
1:11:42
cancellation kicks in more what's that's what's that adaptive audio Yeah so uh
1:11:48
which is like transparent until something noisy happens and it's supposed to kick in but there's another one where it actually increases and decreases the volume depending on what's
1:11:54
around you and I uh and I quite like that so if you're if you're boiling the kettle for a nice cup of tea governor oh
1:12:00
yeah that's how we speak uhuh uh then uh yeah sometimes it will it will crank it
1:12:07
up I find it happens most often with quick things like if you turn on the tap to fill up said Kettle oh then uh then
1:12:13
it'll do it then or if a car goes past or something like that well it's use that last example because that's exactly
1:12:18
the types of scenarios where I feel like it's the most finicky is like I'll take my
1:12:23
airpods out I'm going on a or something I'm walking on a busy road and cars pass by and it seems like maybe that could
1:12:30
trigger it so where in the settings am I looking to adjust that this is a PSA for everyone listening by the way like if
1:12:36
I'm sure we're helping someone somewhere because this is it can't just be me that this is happening to and it's driving me
1:12:42
it's driving me berserk well assuming they can actually hear us and their airpods aren't turning
1:12:48
this part of the conversation down out you never know TC doesn't want you to hear this Charlie's busy I know you all
1:12:53
can't see him because all we have I'm pulling up my uh the settings on my phone I'm going to have to uh hook up
1:12:58
the iPods to them because you can't settings with okay well now you've given me something you've given me help and that's more than I had before yeah
1:13:05
because I was I'm not goingon to look at it now because it might steal my audio from my from my microphone and ruin ruin this that's fine let's just go ahead and
1:13:13
oh of course now that I hit the music there's like we just our audience increased like 50% um we're going to go
1:13:18
ahead and wrap it up there that's all the cast we have for you guys this week caveman saying there's also loud sound
1:13:25
uction okay I've got some research to do settings airpods under audio control there's a switch okay that's where it is
1:13:30
settings airpods under audio control uh we're going to go ahead and wrap up there that's all the C Cast we have for
1:13:36
you guys this week but you know what the party continues in the cult Club where I really need to get that rebooted again
1:13:42
is there any interesting chatter going on in the cult Club Griffin I'm sure there probably okay I need to hop in there and if you want to join us in the
1:13:48
cult Club you can for a measly five bucks a month if you just if
1:13:53
you would just unloosen your your your grip on that $5 and just let it float up
1:13:59
into the air and Float over to me and have it go into my pocket and also every month after that and then also yeah
1:14:05
every month after that you'll also spend the $5 you can stop if you if you don't want to do it you can go to un fork.
1:14:11
cast.com but if you want to support us go to support. thecast doc.com support.
1:14:17
cast.com or ctof 95 macrumors.com the lawyers have not communicated with me in
1:14:23
