hey everyone this is Michael from c ma
0:06
here and today I'm going to show you how
0:07
you can upload any file you want right
0:09
to iCloud so as of now Apple has really
0:12
tight restrictions on what you can and
0:13
cannot do with iCloud U apps can use it
0:17
just to transfer files and data between
0:19
you devices and things like that but you
0:21
really can't use it as a Dropbox and a
0:24
lot of people complained about that
0:25
because they liked the concept of idisk
0:28
and they like Dropbox and you really
0:30
can't do that kind of stuff with iCloud
0:32
but I found this little workaround that
0:34
you can actually upload any file that
0:36
you want right to iCloud so in this case
0:39
today I'm going to show you both an
0:40
image and a video but you can also do
0:42
this with audio and PDFs I've tried both
0:45
of those and even full directories full
0:48
files so really any file you want will
0:50
work it's a little more in-depth than if
0:52
you just transfer something to Dropbox
0:54
but if you just like using iCloud it's a
0:56
really handy way that I'll show you
0:58
today and although it doesn't work with
1:01
your iOS devices you won't be able to
1:02
transfer your files to them it does work
1:05
between Macs or even PCS so it's pretty
1:09
neat so the first thing you're going to
1:10
have to do is open up a web browser and
1:12
in this case Safari and you want to go
1:14
to icloud.com and log in so once you're
1:17
in iCloud you're going to click on the
1:19
ior app right here and you might be
1:21
wondering here oh no do I have to have
1:23
keynote Pages or numbers that I I work
1:26
Suite No you don't have to have any of
1:27
that you don't have to have it on your
1:29
Mac or on your iOS device we're just
1:31
going to use it uh because it's what
1:34
facilitates the transport of files to
1:36
iCloud so when you go to upload a
1:39
document from this iWork panel normally
1:41
we would say you can upload either iWork
1:43
Microsoft Word documents orain text so
1:46
this workaround takes advantage of that
1:48
so what we're going to do is do this
1:51
image first I'm going to upload this
1:53
right to iCloud so if I right click on
1:55
it I'm going to want to click compress
1:58
so now that you have this compressed
1:59
file you're going to want to rename it
2:01
and in this case we're going to put txt
2:04
on the end hit enter and it's going to
2:06
give us this little dialog box and we're
2:08
going to select use. txt so now we've
2:12
turned this image essentially into a
2:14
zipped file and then a text document and
2:17
if you look at it you can see that it's
2:18
all just jumbled up text it's really
2:20
meaningless you might think you've
2:21
corrupted the file but you actually
2:23
haven't and this is where iCloud comes
2:25
in I can go back over to Safari here and
2:27
I can hit this little gear icon in the
2:29
corner hit upload document and from
2:31
there I'm going to look on my
2:34
desktop and right there is the file you
2:37
can see it's plain text you can hit
2:38
choose and since it identifies it as
2:40
text it will upload it right to iCloud
2:43
there it is in my documents now this
2:45
also show up on pages for iOS if you
2:49
have it but you won't be able to do
2:50
anything with it there if you open it
2:51
it'll give you an err so what you can do
2:53
though is if you log in to any other
2:55
computer and you go to
2:57
icloud.com you'll be able to see this
2:59
and in here and this is where it acts
3:00
like a Dropbox cuz I can select this
3:02
file I can hit download and hit text
3:05
it's going to download it's only going
3:06
to take a couple seconds here and now
3:08
I'll be able to go into the finder go to
3:11
my downloads folder and here you can see
3:14
that same file is I've just downloaded
3:15
off iCloud now all I have to do is
3:18
rename it back to what it was so if I
3:20
take off the txt hit use. zip and all I
3:23
have to do is unzip the file and you can
3:26
see there's my image so it's a little
3:28
bit of a workaround and it's a little
3:29
bit messy but essentially you've just
3:31
use iCloud as a Dropbox and I think it
3:33
works pretty neat so to show you how you
3:35
can do this with more than just images
3:37
I'm also going to show you this movie
3:38
here and uh it works pretty well as well
3:41
so once again I just compress
3:43
it and add txt to the end and we'll
3:46
upload it and I'll show you exactly how
3:49
it turns out so I hit the gear I hit
3:52
upload and I can upload my video right
3:57
to iCloud now while this is uploading I
4:00
just mention that because you don't
4:01
really receive any visual warnings about
4:03
how much space you have left it's easy
4:05
to fill up iCloud if you do it this way
4:07
because you only get 5 GB free to start
4:10
with so now we've uploaded this I can
4:11
download this too and it's going to
4:13
download the movie I just uploaded so
4:16
now this is downloaded I can go into my
4:17
finder window again I can go to my
4:19
downloads folder and here we go again
4:21
and I can just rename this so this would
4:24
be really nice if you just uploaded a
4:26
entire directory full of files as you
4:28
wouldn't have to do this for every file
4:30
and it still works the same and you can
4:31
see it
4:36
works so you can see that it actually
4:38
did work and I just transferred a video
4:41
over iCloud so that's how you can upload
4:43
any document to iCloud and use it as a
4:45
drop box and I think it's really neat so
4:47
if there's anything that you'd like to
4:48
see me do a howto on make sure to send
4:50
