hey everyone today I'm going to show you
0:10
how you can bring serial likee
0:11
functionality to your Mac with OS 10's
0:14
built-in speakable items so speech
0:17
technology is all the rage these days
0:19
especially with the iPhone
0:20
4S and many are asking when Siri will
0:23
come to the Mac little do most Mac users
0:27
know OS 10 already includes some type
0:30
type of voice control system not quite
0:33
as advanced as Siri but it can do a lot
0:35
of the functions Siri can do and it can
0:37
also do several that Siri can so to set
0:40
this up and enable it all you're going
0:41
to have to do is go up to your Apple
0:42
logo menu and select system preferences
0:45
inside of system preferences you're
0:46
going to want to click on the speech Tab
0:49
and here you can see speech recognition
0:50
and text to speech and then right below
0:53
that you have speakable items you can
0:55
turn that on or off so if we turn that
0:57
on you can see right here this little
0:59
microphone pop up
1:00
and it looks vaguely similar to the Siri
1:03
interface in a way so you have a couple
1:06
different settings here and of course
1:07
you can tweak what microphone you're
1:08
using if you use an external one you can
1:10
do that as well now you can also see
1:12
there's a listening key and this is
1:14
because there's two different ways to
1:15
have the computer to listen to your
1:17
voice so you can either listen only
1:19
while the key is pressed or listen
1:20
continuously with a keyword or the
1:23
keyword can also be
1:24
optional now I found that if you use a
1:27
keyword you can say something like Siri
1:29
what what time is it it's 6:56 and it'll
1:33
tell you so you can use a keyword and
1:34
then it'll be listening continuously now
1:37
if you CH choose the keyword to be
1:38
optional and you don't have to say it I
1:40
found that just by talking know playing
1:43
music even just noises will sometimes
1:45
trigger the speakable items so I found
1:48
that it's best to either have a keyword
1:51
which can be a little bit annoying at
1:52
times I always have to say the keyword
1:54
or my favorite is to listen only when
1:56
key is pressed and that is by default
1:58
escape and of course you can change that
2:00
right here so in this case you can see
2:02
the microphone is inactive until I hold
2:04
down the Escape key and then it starts
2:06
listening now under the commands tab you
2:09
can see all these different command sets
2:10
and I have them all selected to get the
2:12
most functionality you're going to want
2:13
to have these selected now once you have
2:15
this little microphone floating here you
2:17
might say that's a little bit annoying
2:18
to always have sitting there so if you
2:19
just double click on it it'll slide
2:21
right down into your Dock and you can
2:22
see it still works when it's in my dock
2:25
so I can still say something like what
2:27
time is it it's 6:58
2:30
and it knows uh so now there's no
2:33
immediately obvious way to see what kind
2:34
of commands you can tell it but if you
2:37
select this little triangle right here
2:39
you can open speech commands window
2:41
alternately you can also say show me
2:44
what to say and it'll open up the window
2:46
as well these are all the different
2:49
commands you can say and there's all
2:50
these different just tons of different
2:53
commands so if I want I can say
2:54
something like empty the trash empty the
2:58
trash and I can hit empty trash and it's
3:00
going to empty the trash for me just
3:02
like that so there's just tons of
3:04
commands you can read through them once
3:06
you kind of know them it's easy that you
3:08
don't really have to have the speech
3:09
commands window but once again you can
3:11
always just say show me what to say and
3:13
it'll tell you and of course up at the
3:14
top here you have your speech command
3:16
history of what you've said so one of my
3:19
favorite things is the commands with an
3:20
address book and these commands are a
3:22
lot like some of the stuff Siri does so
3:25
for example I can have something like
3:26
iCal open here and if I look under the
3:30
address book commands I can say
3:32
something like meet with Michael steber
3:35
at 12: a.m. on
3:40
Wednesday Wednesday November 16th 11 has
3:44
been added to your calendar so it's
3:46
going to give me this little
3:48
announcement or whatever and then you
3:49
can see right in IAL it's made a new
3:52
event for me and it says meet with
3:53
Michael ster on Wednesday November 16th
3:56
at 12:00 a.m. so I can also email things
3:58
to people so let's say I was on a web
4:01
page and I saw something interesting and
4:02
I just copied it in this case I'm just
4:04
doing it and texted it but it's the same
4:06
thing and I wanted to email this text to
4:08
somebody well whatever is on your
4:10
clipboard you can email so I can say
4:13
something like mail this to Michael
4:16
steber mail this to Micha message to
4:19
Michael steber with your selection and
4:21
you can see that it will open up a new
4:23
mail window and it'll automatically fill
4:26
out to who it's from and you can put in
4:28
your own subject line
4:30
and then it pasted the text that I had
4:32
copied so it it'll do that all for you
4:35
now these commands can go on and on and
4:37
on and you can see here under front
4:39
window it gives you the types of
4:41
commands you would use for the front
4:42
window so if I select iel you can see
4:44
the things change and I can say
4:46
something like add event add event and I
4:50
can do stuff like that if I'm in text
4:51
edit I can say bold bold and it bolds
4:54
the text there's just all these
4:56
different things and once you learn the
4:57
commands and you just kind of look
4:58
through them it's very easy to follow I
5:01
can say open my
5:04
browser and it'll pop me over to my
5:06
browser where I can even select stuff
5:08
for my bookmarks so I can say apple
5:11
apple and I'll load up the Apple
5:13
homepage so that's just some of the
5:15
stuff you can do with speakable items
5:17
which comes bundled with Mac OS 10 and
5:19
can really bring that Siri experience
5:21
over to your Mac at least to some extent
5:24
and of course if you want to tweak
5:25
things even more you can go under text
5:27
to speech and you can change your system
5:29
voices the default is Alex but you can
5:32
choose from all these female voices as
5:33
well as some other male ones and with
5:35
that you can really personalize
5:37
speakable items and get it to do exactly
5:39
what you want so there you go there's
5:41
how to use speakable items in Mac OS 10
5:43
to bring serug functionality overare Mac
5:46
if you have anything that you'd like to
5:47
see me do a howto on make sure to send
5:49
me an email I hope you found this video
