UK-based Redditor linden_park just updated their setup while working in the early development phase of a new life simulator game set in space among multiple planets and space stations. Covering all that intergalactic territory, it helps to have both wide and tall screens.

A spare two-screen setup

Linden_park works on a silver MacBook Pro in tandem with one horizontal and one vertical  screen, both 27-inch LG 4K UHD monitors running at 60hz. The first connects with the MacBook pro via USB-C and the second tethers to the first via USB-C to DisplayPort.

“The main difference between the two is that one has USB C which has been awesome due to no longer needing to plug an additional charging cable into the MacBook,” linden_park wrote in reply to a comment.

In response to concerns posted by other Redditors, linden_park noted no problems over a couple of years running 4K monitors over different versions of macOS.

“It’s not quite as sharp as the retina screen built into the MacBook but it looks sharp enough for sure,” they said. “The 4k is a game changer, so much desktop space, totally worth it. No issues at all as long as your MacBook is capable of running the resolution.”

Dual-monitor mount

To allow for easy swivelling of the displays to change the vertical angle whether sitting or standing at the adjustable desk, linden_park uses an ER Gear Dual Monitor Mount / Arm.

However, the mount is apparently not designed to move the monitors up and down on the fly.

“You’ll need to use a tool to adjust the arm tension and then move it,” linden_park wrote. “You’ll be able to push them back and forward easy, though, without the use of any tools.”

HomePod speaker

Similarly, another user experienced more issues than linden_park has in regard to use of the HomePod speaker via AirPlay, saying the sound freezes “half the time.”

“Once in a while the HomePod glitches out, but not so regularly,” linden_park responded. “I use AirPlay. There’s a small delay whenever playing/pausing any content, would not be good for any form of gaming. But for watching YouTube and listening to music it works great.”
