Love the idea of a Thunderbolt docking station but hate the idea of paying $1,000 for an Apple Thunderbolt-equipped display? Then why not save yourself $750 and opt for the Matrox DS1?
The dock, which is $50 cheaper than Belkin’s Thunderbolt dock, packs in DVI, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, audio in and out, as well as a power connector. What it doesn’t have is a pass-through Thunderbolt port, nor Firewire or a place to plug in you MacBook to power. Neither will it let you hook up a modern Apple display.
Still, as a way to just come home or get to the office and just plug in a couple cables to connect your entire setup, the convenience of a Thunderbolt dock is hard to beat.
Available soon.
