PlugBook: Guess What It Does

It's a plug. It's a book. PlugBook!

If I was to ask you what kind of product is the PlugBook, what would you say? If you guessed that it’s a power adapter in the shape of a book, then congratulations! You just won today’s Cult of Mac Cup Of Awesomeness, which means you can go have a drink alone in your local bar.

The PlugBook is also YAKP (yet another Kickstarter project), only this time the designer Dave Hakkens has actually done some work before coming to you and begging for money. Because of his labors with Designcord, a “Dutch company specialized in plugs, sockets and specially auto-rewind cables,” the product is ready to go into production as soon as it is funded.

The idea is a smart one. The PlugBook sits in your bookshelf until you find yourself short of sockets. Then it (literally) springs into action: you grab it, pull out the spring-loaded cable coiled within (3 meters or 10 feet) and juice up to two regular plugs and two 2-amp USB plugs.

When you’re done, you just press a button and the cable slithers back inside. It’s neat, ingenious and safe, thanks to overcurrent or overheating protection, depending on the model. Speaking of models, there is one for the U.S and one for the EU.

The minimum pledge is $25, which is a $5 saving on the eventual retail price. You can also choose between four colors, to match the books on your shelf.
