Auroch Digital just announced the development of a digital version of a classic Games Workshop board game from 1987, Chainsaw Warrior, coming to iPad and Android soon.
The original board game is one of the only single-player board games I know of, putting you in the role of the only hope for humanity as scary creatures come flooding through a dimensional rift in the heart of Manhattan, circa 2032. Of course, you’re the guy that must come out of retirement to battle the evil monsters, which have already destroyed the world’s bravest and brightest. It’s up to you to chainsaw your way through wave after wave the evil hordes. Wait, that sounds like a video game, doesn’t it?
“It’s a game I played as a kid and loved,” said Auroch Digital’s Design & Production Director, Tomas Rawlings. “I see it as the pre-cursor of First Person Shooters when video games technology could not really do the first person or the shooting.”
Chainsaw Warrior won’t be an easy game, he said, comparing the difficulty to such modern classics in video gaming like Super Meat Boy and Dark Souls.
“The game has many ways to kill you,” said Rawlings, “and is unafraid to use them – which makes it all the sweeter when you finally win.”
Originally released in 1987, the board game version of Chainsaw Warrior was one of the best sellers of the time for Games Workshop, according to head of licensing, Jon Gillard.
Other Games Workshop classic boardgames that have been recently converted to iOS include Talisman and Warhammer Quest, as well as the upcoming Space Hulk.
As soon as the game is released on iPad, iPhone, and Android, it will head to Mac and PC if successful.
