One of the coolest things about the current version of iOS, and one I show every new iOS user, is the way you can double click the Home button to bring up the multitasking bar. This shows a horizontal list of all the recently closed apps on your iPhone, making switching between their saved states super easy.
If you want something similar on your Mac, then you have to try AppsBar, a $1.99 app in the Mac App Store that does the same thing, only at the top of your screen.
Head on over to the Mac App Store to download AppsBar, enter your iTunes account credentials, and let it install on your Mac. You can find it in the Launcher, or in the Applications folder. Launch it with a click or double-click, depending on the location you’re launching from, and it will place a little icon in your menu bar (it kind of looks like a paint roller brush or one of those old fashioned flash bars for a camera).
Once you click it, a linen-background area will drop down from the top. There won’t be anything in it, since AppsBar just started. Once you close a few apps over time, and keep AppsBar running, the list of recently closed apps will continue to grow horizontally. You’ll also be able to scroll to the right to move beyond the screen. Neat!
Click on any icon in the arranged apps list and you’ll launch that app. Now you can launch apps just like you do on iOS.
With AppsBar activated, click on the little downward arrow (or military bars, depending on your perspective) to the right of the screen to access the Auto Start at Login option, as well as power-button icon to quit AppsBar, a globe icon to go to the AppsBar web page, and an upward arrow icon to close the options space.
For two bucks, this is a pretty sweet app, even though it needs a few more improvements to make it a must-use app, like a way to activate and navigate it with only the keyboard. Give AppsBar a shot, and let us know what you think in the comments.
