Turn Your Car’s Vestigial Ashtray Into A Handy iPhone Dock
Here are two things that are probably true: you don’t smoke, and you own an old, disused iPhone dock. Here are some things which are almost guaranteed to be true: You own a dock connector cable and a 3.5 mm jack cable
And if you live in the U.S, and you haven’t yet achieved enlightenment and switched to a bike, then you almost certainly have a car. Put these things together and what do you get? Jalopnik’s neat DIY in-car iPhone dock.
Jalopnik’s Jason Torchinsky took the pull-out ashtray in his old Beetle and, using the guts of a disused dock, a few cables and a little bit of drilling, turned it into a retractable iPhone dock/shelf, complete with power and sound hookups. The exact instructions are going to vary depending on the layout of your own automobile, but the general principles are the same wherever you try this.
If I hated the environment, wanted to find a way to dump a few hundred bucks into gas, insurance, parking and so on every month, and above all hated being thin, then I’d probably buy a car. And if I did that, I’d probably make an iPhone mount just like this one. Or – better still – I’d take up smoking again.
