How To Jailbreak Your iOS 5.1.1 Device With Absinthe The Right Way

How To Jailbreak Your iOS 5.1.1 Device With Absinthe The Right WayClick here to see Cult of Mac's full jailbreak archives!

The latest Absinthe untethered jailbreak for iOS has finally been released. After months of waiting, you can download the Chronic Dev Team’s free Absinthe tool to jailbreak your iOS device in a matter of minutes.

We’ll show you how to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 the right way in this guide.

How To Jailbreak Your iOS 5.1.1 Device With Absinthe The Right Way

Step 1: Make sure you have your SHSH blobs backed up using the free TinyUmbrella app. It’s available on both Windows and Mac. Saving your SHSH blobs is essential for downgrading back to your previous iOS firmware version if something should go wrong during the jailbreak process. Basically, if you don’t complete this step, you could end up — worst case scenario — with a bricked iPhone.

Step 2: Back up your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to either iTunes or iCloud before you go any farther. You want to make sure you have a recent setup to restore to if something goes wrong. While jailbreaking isn’t that dangerous, you can never be too careful.

Step 3 (Optional): Now that you have a backup (we recommend using iTunes and not iCloud to backup for the quickest results), clear the iOS device you want to jailbreak. Only do this if your device does not already have a tethered jailbreak installed. Erasing your device will make the jailbreak process much faster. You can manually clear your iOS device by navigating to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings.

We also recommend that you backup your Cydia apps if you were previously jailbroken.

Step 4: Download the free Absinthe jailbreak tool.

Step 5: Connect your iOS device to your computer via a USB cable and open Absinthe.

Step 6: Click “Jailbreak” and let Absinthe do its thing. It may take a little while. Your iOS device should say “Restoring in Progress.” Make sure not to disconnect or quit Absinthe while this process is happening. Cydia will then be installed on your Home screen.

Jailbreak not working for me on 4S.  Gets stuck about 2/3 of the way through the process and then recovers itself. :(

    Has this worked for anyone?
(not complaining, as this is all free and awesome, just curious)

It’s not working for me on my iPad 3 WIFI running 5.1.1
It says “restore complete, unplug and plug back in to try jailbreak again”.  Tried several times to no avail.  Ughhhh….

Does anyone know why whenI hit run as administrator it still wont run the program?

  • mannyotr

Question….  does Absinthe require one to enter DFU mode?  Reason I ask is because my phone’s sleep/wake/power button is broken.  Does not work at all.  So if I have to set the phone into DFU mode using the sleep/wake/power button, I am screwed.

  • Mark Ackermann

Haven’t gotten it working on 5.1.1 iPhone 4S 16GB Verizon.  Can anyone report that they got it working?  Seems like a bad sign that none of the writers can confirm that it works.

  • maxvey

seriously…it seems like absinthe 2 is not working as of now…. looking at peoples comment, me and all the rest of the pipol has an issue regarding the jailbreak because it keeps restarting over again…somethings wrong….i tried it with my windows pc first then cydia does not appear, with my mac, i get error code-5 device not supported which in fact i have an ipad 3 5.1.1 .

  • Josh Yates

Glad I’m not the only one…it goes through the process for me and then says that the restore was completed…and to retry the jailbreak.  So…something is most definitely wrong.  I’m just glad I started with my iPad 3 instead of my iPhone 4S. I don’t need a jailbreak on my iPad, but on my iPhone…I need my jailbreak.  I’m on 5.0.1 on my iPhone, 5.1.1 on my iPad.  Whew!!!

  • Daniel Cho

UPDATE!!!  I fixed the issue by doing the following:

    - Connect your iPad to iTunes

    - Skip the option to restore from backup and continue to set up as a new iPad

    - Restore (erase) your iPad using iTunes (involves iPad connecting to Apple servers to obtain IOS 5.1.1

    - Run Absinthe and run the jailbreak.  This worked the first time!  (Just so that you know, I used the SETTINGS app to incrementally update from 5.1 to 5.1.1 and I’m thinking this causes issues somehow.  Good luck everyone!

    Found on another forum:
“Tried “Erase All Content and Settings” then Absinthe 2.0 severel times with no luck… it failed (and recovered each time).

Used “Restore” in iTunes, configured as a new phone with a dummy name
and waited untill iTunes was finshed syncing with the phone.
Closed iTunes, started Absinthe 2.0 and jailbreak was successful

Restarted iTunes and restored from previous backup.”

Trying it now, and will report back if it works!

STEP 3 WORKS SO WELL! DO IT!

  • Bryan Bodine

Worked just fine on my 4S.  I did a backup but did not erase all settings and content.  It took about 10 minutes for it to complete.

  • Alexa Lee

the software wont even download to my computer….wth :/

  • Lane Jasper

Worked great for me on my iPad 2 5.1.1 REMEMBER you have to update to 5.1.1. Turn off iCloud and sync locally and be patient as cydia’s servers are getting hammered.

Trying to restore iPad 3 with iTunes…and it’s saying that the iPad can’t be restored with the requested build. ARGH!!!  I had updated over the air instead of through iTunes.  Last time I do that!

  • Lane Jasper

iPad 2 5.1.1 not a problem, worked on first try.

  • MorningZ

doing a full restore of 5.1.1 ipsw and then using Absinthe worked for me (i was getting the same “recovery” stuff going on)

Oops…TinyUmbrella had set to check with Cydia for restores…fixed it there and now I’m restoring through iTunes…we’ll see how it goes!

  • Josh Yates

There we go…after a restore through iTunes, Absinthe jailbroke my iPad 3 pretty quickly.  So…restoring all my content and my iPad 3 is FREE!

    Confirmed!

Do not restore using the iPad, even though the instructions say so; use iTunes.

Now I’m off to mod and tweak the hell out of my iPad 3! :D

The problem was that we (myself and others who commented) were following those instructions. Restoring through iTunes seems to be the key difference.

not working with my iPad2 wifi, same message something gone wrong….

  • Jeff Hardy

Not working for me on iPhone 4S….follow steps religiously, process says it completes, looks like it has restored the device, and no Cydia icon. I have done it three times. Looks like this is not ready for prime time yet

  • Nate Webster

I was getting the hmm something must have gone wrong and then recovering error until I tried what Daniel choose said you must restore using iTunes and then run absinthe for some reason the method of erasing content and settings doesn’t work for most people.

  • Koban4max

it supports ipad1, iphone 2, and ipod 3..

iphone 4, 4s and ipad 3 is later date.
  • x6herbius

Restoring to factory settings through iTunes confirmed to have worked for me.

  • chrisgodby

Jailbreak not working for me on 4S.  Gets stuck about 2/3 of the way through the process and then recovers itself. :(

UPDATE: Like other users, I actually had to click “Restore” in iTunes and set my 4S up as a new device with a dummy name.  Then I was able to jailbreak successfully!

  • KarrieLyne

Worked perfect once I did the restore from iTunes vs just doing the reset on the phone like the directions indicated. Thanks to all those involved!! :)

  • UWishprod

Great article guy!  I just did this on Windows as well, check it out.

Jailbreak successful…however the BigBoss source is not working, and I can’t download Winterboard. Maybe there are bugs and stuff? It’s highly annoying. Can’t download ANYTHING

  • marauderAbroad

Absinthe 2.0.1 update fixed my problem, anyone having problems should try that.

With so many jailbreakers using the Absinthe jailbreak tool, the Cydia repos are getting slammed by the high traffic. Give it some time and try later when their servers aren’t so busy.

  • nthnm

Done. Fiiiinally. I haven’t jailbroken since the days of going to the website and pressing “jailbreak.” All from your phone.

  • technochick

seems like a lot of work for something that no one has proven to me I simply MUST do. I really don’t care about having a movie as my wallpaper, or icons that spin and bounce around the screen, I don’t steal apps from others and I’m not so lazy that I can’t handle two more steps to turn off my bluetooth, wifi etc. Nor do I need to know my GPS location every moment of the day
