hey everyone this is Michael with cul ma
0:06
here and today I'm going to show you the
0:07
new maps application in iOS 6 and I'm
0:10
running it here on the iPad uh but this
0:12
is also pretty much exactly the same on
0:14
the iPhone as well just thought I'd show
0:16
it to you on a bigger display so if we
0:18
launch up maps here you can see that it
0:20
immediately looks different it's no
0:21
longer based on Google Maps and it looks
0:23
quite a bit nicer the interface has been
0:25
simplified things like that so if we
0:28
zoom in we can see that now everything
0:31
is based around Apple's own custom
0:34
interface so they choose how the maps
0:37
look um so it's pretty interesting now
0:40
you can immediately see that some
0:41
different gestures are supported you can
0:42
use two fingers now and you can swipe up
0:44
and down like this and you kind of get
0:46
this 3D View and you can see Apple's
0:49
headquarters and you can even do some
0:50
rotation if you use two fingers and you
0:52
can see this is the front of Apple's
0:53
headquarters now another thing you can
0:55
do is you can switch over uh to
0:58
satellite mode and now this brings
0:59
brings you into the pretty amazing 3D
1:02
mode actually it crashed here you can
1:04
see it's still in beta obviously but
1:06
we're going to go
1:08
satellite and we're going to zoom in
1:11
here so now we're in Satellite and this
1:13
is Apple's headquarters now I have about
1:15
a 20 megabit internet connection here
1:17
and you can still see how slow it is uh
1:19
so this is a lot of data this is pretty
1:22
intensive but it performs pretty well um
1:25
even on the iPad so if we zoom in here
1:29
and pan around we can see Apple's
1:31
headquarters and it really looks
1:33
remarkable there's some weird things uh
1:36
that don't look quite right and some
1:38
kind of weird artifacting and things
1:40
like that but all in all uh it's pretty
1:43
amazing and you can see here's the front
1:45
of infinite Loop now there's a couple
1:47
things I can show you here that are only
1:48
available on the iPhone uh such as turn
1:50
BYT navigation and traffic and really
1:52
even if I had the iPhone here I'd still
1:54
have to go out in the car and drive
1:55
around to show you so it's not really
1:57
practical you can see all that stuff on
1:59
Apple's website and there's some
2:01
screenshots uh there's also a compass
2:03
button here and it realigns you whenever
2:05
you hit it looking under here you can
2:07
also see that uh this data is powered by
2:10
TomTom uh so that's pretty interesting
2:13
obviously you can also show traffic
2:15
things like that uh these are all things
2:16
that are always available in the maps
2:19
and we also have a satellite hybrid and
2:22
standard view like you saw before also
2:24
take a look at directions here so for
2:27
example I'm going to start at
2:30
I'm going to start at one infinite Loop
2:32
and I'm going to end in Redmond
2:34
Washington I'm going to take a little
2:36
trip to
2:37
Microsoft so now if I hit the route
2:40
obviously it'll do the route for me and
2:43
it says 13 hours 854 miles so you can
2:46
see uh that now you can do routes on
2:51
here this is not something new uh but it
2:53
just looks a little bit different
2:54
because of the new maps app and of
2:57
course you can tilt up and down like
2:59
this if you hit this button down here
3:01
you can see the directions and it gives
3:02
you the route and then from there you'd
3:04
be able to hit start and navigate so
3:06
that's pretty much iOS Maps the new
3:08
version on iOS 6 in a nutshell uh once
3:10
you go in and you really play with the
3:12
3D mode it's pretty amazing and
3:14
especially if you're looking at
3:15
landmarks and stuff they got some really
3:17
good data and it looks really nice and
3:19
it's really remarkable and I can't wait
3:20
for this future to debut in Fall I think
3:23
I might actually start using the maps
3:25
app on iOS now a couple more things
3:27
let's say you go to a specific
3:30
company or a place or a restaurant or
3:32
something like that such as Apple here
3:34
now if you hit the information button
3:36
you see this kind of New View and it
3:38
shows you you know the location and
3:40
image and you also see the address and
3:43
everything it just looks quite a bit
3:44
nicer now also this works with Siri and
3:47
Siri is now in the iPad so if I ask Siri
3:49
something
3:50
like find Italian restaurants in
3:54
cero okay one of these Italian
3:56
restaurants is in cerino CA Siri will
4:00
now give you these restaurants here and
4:01
you can see it looks a little bit
4:02
different with the new maps app and I
4:04
can select one of them and I can look at
4:06
a whole bunch of information it's a lot
4:08
nicer than it was before and uh let's
4:12
say I want to look at the map it'll take
4:13
me there and like I said it shows you
4:15
the reviews on Yelp I can hit this
4:16
information button it shows me the map
4:19
up there it shows me the website and
4:20
everything like that and an enhanced
4:21
view so that's about all for the new
4:23
maps application in iOS 6 and there's a
4:26
lot of cool new features in iOS 6 and
4:27
I'll be doing couple more videos on
4:30
so make sure to stay tuned for those on
