With Jony Ive being a self-proclaimed mechanical watch fan, it’s fascinating to see how the Apple Watch design language borrowed elements from traditional Swiss watches — and now how Swiss watches are starting to resemble the Apple Watch.
Luxury watchmaker H. Moser & Cie’s is the closest yet, looking virtually identical to Apple’s smartwatch with its rectangular chassis, crown, band, and even 38mm size. It’s name? The Apple Alp Watch. We’re not even kidding.
On its website, the Swiss Alp Watch is described as being, “inspired by the modern design of smartwatches, [although it] is entirely mechanical.” The description continues by noting that:
“The Swiss Alp Watch does not allow you to make calls, or send messages to share the latest gossip; it does not give you the option to send beautiful sketches you have created on a two-inch screen or to share your heart rate.
It does much more than that: it lets you reconnect to what matters in life. It takes you back to sharing emotions with your nearest and dearest without a filter, interface or embellishment. Most importantly, it is something you can pass on to your children one day without having to upgrade it!”
With a price tag of $24,900, the 50-piece limited edition timepieces are more expensive than even the top tier Apple Watch Edition, but they’re certainly attractive. All the same, it’s pretty hilarious that after having Swiss watchmakers denigrate Apple’s watch efforts early on, everyone’s now jumping on the Apple Watch bandwagon.
Then again, they have to do something about those falling Swiss watch sales…
