Players become students at Hogwarts and engage in magical duels against dark wizards in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, which launched Tuesday. It’s a collectible card (CCG) and massively multiplayer (MMO) game, and is free to play — with in-app purchases.

There are versions for iPhone and iPad. (Android too.)

Go on a new wizarding adventure in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened

The Harry Potter-themed movies are over, while the TV series will arrive sometime in the future. So the best way to have new adventures in the Wizarding World is through video games.

The latest of these, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is set 10 years after the Battle of Hogwarts. Players take on the role of a young student at the famous school of witchcraft and wizardry. The game offers the classic experience, including the Sorting Hat, classes, the Forbidden Forest and more. It’s populated with familiar faces from the original series as well as new characters.

Players learn spells that can be cast in the form of cards. Learning to use these in winning combinations is the secret to success in increasingly challenging trials … and duels with other players.

The game isn’t a retread of the books/movies. Warner Bros. promises “a brand-new story in the wizarding world. Each year at Hogwarts will bring a fresh arc and different adventures to explore.”

If it isn’t obvious, this is a blend of a role-playing game and a collectible-card game. There are 70 spells available at launch.

“From the intricate mechanics of the collectible card system, to the linework of the game’s art style, we have collaborated with Warner Bros. Games on every aspect of development to ensure an authentic adaptation of the wizarding world in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened,” said Ethan Wang, SVP of NetEase, who developed the title in collaboration with Warner Bros. Games.

It’s a free-to-play game, which means the developers make their money through in-app purchases. Prices for these range from $4.99 to $99.99.
