It’s good to be the king, isn’t it Steve? Especially when standing next to Damon Albarn, lead singer of The Good, The Bad and the Queen. Damn. Steve is relishing this DRM-free breakthrough with EMI:

“We are going to give iTunes customers a choice–the current versions of our songs for the same 99 cent price, or new DRM-free versions of the same songs with even higher audio quality and the security of interoperability for just 30 cents more,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think our customers are going to love this, and we expect to offer more than half of the songs on iTunes in DRM-free versions by the end of this year.”

Hear that, other record companies? They’re Steve’s footsteps — you’re all prey. His smug grin is coming for you.

I never expected it would happen so fast. It hasn’t been two months yet since Steve Job’s “Thoughts on music” saw the light. This is GREAT news.

A lot of people are missing what’s really happened here. Jobs took the EU coming down on DRM and lack of interoperability, and instead of letting it turn into a years-long ordeal like MS’ antitrust trial, he flipped it over as a business opportunity. Who the hell makes money on threats of government interference? I don’t want to play chess against this guy.
