Xiaomi isn’t exactly known for having its own ideas, so why would you expect it to act any differently when Apple introduced its innovative new 3D Touch feature for the iPhone 6s?
True to form, a new rumor coming out of China claims that Xiaomi has patented its own version of the technology. Because, of course it has.
The rumor comes from a well-informed Chinese leaker, although they don’t provide any additional information. As a result, it’s not known whether Xiaomi plans to develop this technology in-house, or team with a company like Synaptics to use its “ClearForce” tech.
Xiaomi has previously worked with Synaptics on the Xiaomi Mi4c, which utilized Synaptics’ ClearPad S3708 capacitive touch controller.
It should be noted that Xiaomi’s not the only company interested in bringing 3D Touch-style force-sensing displays to its next line of smartphones. Samsung is said to be following in Apple’s footsteps by incorporating similar technology into its 2016 release Galaxy S7.
Given that the Xiaomi report should still be filed under “rumor,” there’s no guarantee this comes to pass, of course.
With that said, given the company’s past history, the reliability of the tipster who shared the news, and the fact that this was one of the most-praised features on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus… well, I wouldn’t exactly be surprised to see it become reality, I’ll put it like that.
