Bumbling around the Web, I just stumbled on Smay’s blog, where he’s written a good description of his “Mac Lust.”
“I want one of the new MacBook Pros. I have a couple of computers at work; a year-old Dell here at home; a perfectly good ThinkPad. I do not need another computer. But I want one. I have never used a Mac. Don’t look forward to having to learn a new operating system or move back and forth between Mac and PC.
I want a Mac because they are cool. And all the cool kids have them. They are sexy. There is no logic or reason at work here. This is happening in the lizard part of my brain. I’ve thought about sneaking over to St. Louis to the Apple store and putting my hands on one of the new MacBooks. But that’s like saying I’ll just lie down on the bed next to the super-model, but we won’t “do anything.” If I walk in that store, I’ll walk out $2,500 poorer. So I’m holding on. Like a junkie trying to survive the shakes and chills and maybe in the morning I won’t want that fix.”

Maybe Macs need to be more like supermodels, i.e. they’ll get their bouncers to remove you unless you’re rich enough to enjoy them.

LOL. i had to fwd that on to a Switcher here in the office. she gets techno-lust as badly as i do.
I did exactly the same thing last Xmas. Even though I have a perfectly ok laptop I went into the shop just to have a look at an ibook and came out a 1000 euros (plus change) poorer.
on the bright side I’m writing this in a street cafe able to use the local wifi connection without any hassles about the batteries going dead on me after a couple of hours.
Especially after just seeing the new 17 inch MacBook Pro, who could resist one
I’ve been on the fence about 17″ vs. 15″ but I’ve finally decided to pull the trigger on the smaller of the two. Just hope I don’t end up wanting the 17″ too!
Mac Lust: One Year Later

Last April you posted on my burning Mac Lust. I bought my first Mac (as you knew I would) and have become increasingly annoying (and productive) ever since.
I promised myself I wouldn’t turn into a Machovah’s Witness, going door-to-door on Saturday mornings, handing out Mac literature.
But friends and coworkers read my blog and peeked in my office and –when they thought I wasn’t looking– gently stroked the MacBook Pro.
And now, one by one, they are trekking to the Apple Store in St. Louis (2 hours drive), “just to look.” And they all come home with a Mac.
Our CEO was the latest convert.
