We’re coming up to four months since the public release of iOS 8, and according to Apple’s own stats, 68 percent of users are now running the latest version of its mobile operating system. This is up five percent from one month ago — most likely buoyed by the massive number of iOS device activations which took place over the holidays.

iOS 7, meanwhile, fell 3 percentage points to 29 percent of the total active iOS user base, while earlier versions of the OS now hover around 4 percent. (Yes, we know those numbers add up to slightly more than 100 percent: it’s likely due to rounding-up the figures involved.)

Leading up to Christmas, analysts predicted that Apple would sell a massive 71.5 million iPhones over the holiday season, which no doubt is continuing to have a big knock-on effect in terms of iOS 8 adoption, due to the fact that it comes preinstalled on the handsets.

Potentially slowing adoption down is the large amount (around 2GB) of storage required to install the mobile OS on phones: an issue which has even resulted in a class action lawsuit against Apple. Despite efforts to improve it, iOS 8 also runs slowly on older devices such as the iPhone 4s and iPad 2, which has almost certainly put some users off upgrading.

By comparison, this time last year iOS 7 was installed on 78 percent of iOS devices. While iOS 8 numbers aren’t quite so impressive, however, they’re still a world away from the numbers seen elsewhere. Looking at the fractured Android ecosystem, for instance, one recent report suggested that fewer than 0.1% of Google Play users have upgraded to Android’s latest mobile OS, Lollipop.

Next to that, iOS 8 adoption has been a landslide victory for Apple.
