Why you can’t get Angry Birds cartoons on your iPad

Answer: because the new standalone ToonsTV iOS app, for iPhone and iPad, is only available in Finland.

If you happen to have a Finnish iTunes account, though, you can now download your very own standalone iOS app to watch Rovio’s surprisingly broad offerings of animated entertainment, ToonsTV.

The games media studio responsible for the Angry Birds phenomenon has already had its own cartoon network for a while, with global fans able to watch their favorites on Rovio-created mobile apps, the Web, smart TVs, some set-top devices, and even on a few traditional TV networks.

This is the first time, however, that anyone has been able to download an iOS app specifically for the purpose of watching Rovio cartoons, along with a balanced load of classic favorites like Stan Lee’s Chakra The Invincible and Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock.

Whether this will expand to other countries is unknown, though game developers soft launch in non-US markets all the time. We hope it does, though, as the only way to see these cartoons on TV in the US is via Comcast’s Xfinity on Demand cable TV service. And no one uses that.
