Apple Announces September 12th iPhone 5 Event: “It’s Almost Here”

Apple has sent out a not-so-mysterious invite for its media event next Wednesday. Notice the giant “5” reflection.

Apple has officially sent out invites for its rumored September 12th iPhone event. The media event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco on Wednesday, September 12th. The invite itself features the number “5,” indicating the unveiling of the iPhone 5.

Apple is also expected to release iOS 6 alongside the iPhone 5. The rumored ‘iPad mini’ will likely not be announced until October.

Place your bets: “The new iPhone,” or “iPhone 5?”

  • djfurst5

Perhaps the “5” refers to 5 products/services that will be announced including the new iPhone, an iPad Mini, an official release of iOS6, and maybe even new iPods? This isn’t the 5th iPhone to be released, so I’m not so positive Apple will be calling the product “iPhone 5″ especially after they ditched the “3” when they released the new iPad earlier this year.

    YAY!

  • Nicholas Randio

I’m still thinking they’ll go with “The New iPhone” in lieu of the iPad as well. Who knows? It’s apple and they’ll do what they want.

  • baby_Twitty

from the hint, definitely iPhone “5.”

The ‘new’ iPad naming certainly are causing alot of confusion.
Especially when the less tech-savvy consumers wants to search for more infos online about the ‘new’ iPad, they end up getting results in forums or ebay etc etc about ‘new’ly bought iPad 2 instead.

  • justinrwalsh

The new iPhone, no doubt about it.

I think you are right when saying they wont be calling it iPhone 5.

  • djfurst5

The 5 could also refer to an October 5th release date of the new iPhone.

  • Ed_Kel

I’ve always said that the only reason why they changed the nomenclature on the iPad to match that of the Macs is because it’s a post-PC device; not an iDevice. The iPhone will still follow the number system.

Hey, you gotta eat that crow along with me and everyone else. Better give up now. Steve is dead and Apple has forgotten how to count.

I cannot see the full 5 in the shadows. I see the top of a 5…. help.

  • ddevito

I’ll always give Apple one thing (from a technical perspective). Their engineering SoC design and their UI engineering is top notch.

No matter how fast the Nexus 7, my iPad 2 still whips its ass in terms of sheer interface performance. I install two apps on my N7 and I get redraw. Hate that about Android. Jelly Bean doesn’t “fix” it, just makes it less noticeable.

we’ll see if this new iPhone can bring me back to the dark side. :p

  • breck

they will perhaps discuss 5 upcoming items on the 12th. the upcoming 6th generation iphone which will include the new iOS 6, will probably not be released as the iPhone 5, more likely as the new iPhone. just an observation.

  • Skywaytraffic

Seeing as it’s the 6th generation iPhone, the use of the giant ass “5” makes it pretty clear that’s what they’re calling it anyways. So stupid.

  • prometheus1981

I hope they call it iPhone 5 instead of “The New iPhone” that would be as idiotic as when they called the new iPad “The new iPad”. What will next year’s model be called… “The NEW new iPhone”? “The NEW new iPad”?

  • SamuelBrock

I think Apple made it clear. Phil Schiller said “we didn’t want to be predictable” when commenting on the “new” iPad. It would be predictable if they kept calling every product, “the new” or iPod …” (5th generation).
Without the number system, there’d be no room for a 5S :P

YOU MY FRIEND ARE BLIND :D

  • rvbberglves

it is real simple. It is the iphone 5. The reason the iPad was called ‘the new’ iPad is because they are going to segment the market with the iPad Mini. If they called it the iPad 3, what were they gonna name the mini….iPad 3 Mini?, iPad 2 Mini? The iPad will just be treated as all the Macs are. Since there is only 1 version of the phone released they are sticking with the numeric identifier.

No, seriously, you think that calling the 6th device the 5th device isn’t completely idiotic? You PREFER it over the truth? And you REALLY think that “the new” is part of the product’s NAME?!

The reason the iPad was called ‘the new’ iPad is because they are going to segment the market with the iPad Mini.

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

If they called it the iPad 3, what were they gonna name the mini….iPad 3 Mini?,

    Please be joking.

Since there is only 1 version of the phone released they are sticking with the numeric identifier.

    BUT THAT’S WRONG. It’s the 6th phone!

To me it simply doesn’t matter what they call it – iPhone 5, just iPhone or whatever – people are still going to call it what they want.

What really matters is the features and how good they are. I look forward to this iPhone and I think you will too after you see the list of features on this article.

Except that that list is completely unconfirmed. It might be true. Or it might be totally false. Or somewhere in between. Right now it is on the same standing as the name debate.

Say hello to the competition of galaxy s3..it doesnt have you tube!!
    http://www.thegadgetcode.com/2012/09/apple-iPhone-5-event.html

Sure it does. Just go to Safari and type http://www.youtube.com

That is if Google doesn’t have their standalone and full of ads version ready when iOS 6 launches. which I bet they will, or very shortly after.

  • technochick

    As always,

Apple can and will do what they want to do. Don’t ever make the assumption that Apple will follow any trend set by anyone, including themselves.

Everyone assumes that this next iphone will have to have to have a radical physical design change because the last design lasted 2 years. But it is possible, if it is what Apple wants, that this next iphone could look exactly like the two before it. Not taller, wider, fatter/thinner. EXACTLY the same. If that is what Apple wants.

Same with the naming. Apple could put whatever number it wants, or no number at all. They could go to how they label the computers and it would be the iPhone (2012) or iPhone (6th Generation) and next year will be the iPhone (2013) just like the iPad will be the iPad (2013) or iPad (4th Generation) and the computers are the iMac (late 2012) etc
