0:49
Dave yeah we we we got to do this live we couldn't wait we couldn't Louis demanded that we go live today he's like
0:56
the the people need a show we can't wait we can't wait any longer I can't wait any longer that's what he said to me it
1:02
already it already seems so old WWDC well that's true days ago so I'll
1:08
just go ahead and that one day was like two or three days so all the other cool podcasts are going on the wrong days of
1:13
the week so you know we're just following the trend and you know what there's no way we could have covered anything on day one it's there's just so
1:20
much to cover that I feel like it's good just to kind of give it a couple days so that we we know we can actually even
1:26
talk about oh let's go ahead and tweet the tweets the Tweet has been tweeted
1:31
it's a good idea ready that's the Jerry Seinfeld
1:40
version there you go Lewis prepare for the greatest retweet
1:47
of your life right there everyone says it's the best tweet what's the deal what's the deal with the
1:56
Tweet okay everyone we are going to go live early here we got a lot to talk about a lot to talk about and I I think
2:05
we witnessed one of the greatest WWDC of our lifetime I'm not even joking I was
2:11
just exhilarated from start to
2:16
finish someone uh kid Coen hey what's the website you guys use to rank your favorite shows oh that is uh flick chart
2:25
flick chart we should make that link available so that people can see our ranking although
2:30
the ranking that it currently has for us is wholly embarrassing there's no movies on there that I think any of us would
2:35
actually Place into our top 10 but we got to go ahead and uh keep that segment
2:42
going oh dude Steve I know what you're saying you're welcome kid Coan okay we're gonna go ahead and queue up Mrs
2:48
D and uh get this thing rolling oh Mrs
2:58
D Mrs d she clearly excited clearly excited about WWDC this
3:04
year oh yes I was my dear and that lovely helmet oh yeah that was fun wasn't it oh yes sometimes I make aleny
3:12
Weare helmet and nothing else that is an odd a that's
3:19
a that's an odd B don't you think L nothing for the helmet his bicycle
3:24
helmet probably I don't want to know the answer that it would have to be the bicycle helmet I would think that if he's going to have to wear the bicycle
3:29
helmet you also have to wear the the crazy bicycle shoes that make you clip clop around the room oh yes my dear both
3:36
oh gross okay Mrs D no one wants to hear about any of that we want to just get this show rolling we got to be rolling
3:42
out of here in uh in 35 minutes no wait
3:48
I take that back 85 minutes I gotta be walking these sweet buns right out the door and we got so much including our
3:56
man I'm excited to see who won this one our last episode predictions on what would happen I'm gonna be honest I think
4:02
I won Lis I think I won but I don't know I can't remember I can't remember I
4:08
didn't go look I almost cheated Griffin but I didn't I didn't look I promise
4:13
have the right uh results been uh certified by Price Waterhouse Cooper or yeah they've beened third
4:22
party I right now we just we're just takings might be contested a little bit but
4:27
uh all right let's get this thing rolling um in three two
4:36
one hello and welcome to the C Cast try
4:42
it again I'm do that one hello and welcome to K best 30 plus minute Apple
4:47
conversation you're going to hear all week long I'm your host last join me today he's been threatening and disciplining CAC writers
4:53
since Monday and the keynote to ensure they're properly motivated to keep the Articles coming he's the managing of C
5:00
oh Le race is here think sir's going to help me with this in the future AI powered uh taunt
5:08
that seems like it might be in near future also with us he can't admit this due to the ndas they made him sign but I
5:13
can tell you they used a scan of his head and scalp to craft the Craig Figi
5:20
skydiving helmet scen at the start of this week's keynote he's a riter at CAC Griffin Jones is
5:27
here maybe I'll be able to Di on those details when my NDA expires in
5:33
2049 when when Craig is dead which he looks great man he's not going anywhere
5:38
anytime soon I think Craig Craig needs to be the next CEO I'm going to just go ahead and speak
5:45
that into being I think it needs to be him man he has just got the Charisma and
5:50
the aptitude to do it that was one of the best if not I was just saying this to leis before we started that was
5:56
probably the best one of the best Keynotes I've seen and probably the best
6:02
Kyo opener that we've seen from Apple ever it was funny and entertaining and
6:09
great until they got to Tim Cook and he's like wow that was really fun I I had the exact same thing that W was so
6:17
cool and then it dropped completely flat they had built it up to such a degree
6:24
that it was I was having a great time and the whole concept was hilarious and them with the federi helmet was such a
6:32
delicious cookie and then you get the TC and his Comet was completely flat he
6:37
should have just said good morning and just not acknowledged it because exactly exact CEOs don't have human emotions and
6:44
they can't act that's exactly it man I mean some CEOs do he's just not good at projecting
6:51
and as as amazing as Tim Cook is Craig feder got the magic and dude that hair I
6:57
got to pull this up may seem like a tangent I actually don't think that it is dude okay well here's the helmet I
7:04
should have had this he's got leadership hair he's he he's got supermodel hair
7:09
that guy's hair is unbelievable I mean like look I know this is a tangent I
7:14
apologize most people most men lose hair as they get older so like even if they
7:20
don't go bald like they lose hair as they get older Craig feder rigi's hair is so thick and Rich it is an
7:28
unbelievable pelt it looks like a bare skin rug I mean you even commented on it
7:33
Lewis it looks even richer than it ever has I mean it's so incredibly thick and
7:38
Rich there are very few older men who have a head of hair like that I mean this is surpassed Kevin Bacon I can't
7:46
think of another actor in Hollywood that has better hair than this guy it is off the charts good he is incredibly
7:52
fortunate to have that hair he's got the personality he's got the aptitude he's got the hair man all you need is hair to
7:59
be honest all the other things are superficial if you have the hair there's a reason that we haven't had a bald
8:05
president since the Inception of Television people love the hair man it makes them feel good they like to look
8:11
at you and it makes everything that you say that much more important when people like the way you look I mean this Craig
8:17
is just aging like a fine wine if you go back to his first keynote appearance in 2011 he he's only like that was a long
8:24
time ago 13 years can do a lot to a person but Craig has only gotten better and better over time dude he looks he
8:30
looks incredible and and just like his level of playfulness in the whole thing I realized this is so in the weeds that
8:35
I can't even believe that we're even talking about this I feel like a sports caster except we're talking about an apple keyote how did I end up in this
8:41
place in my life but you know what we hear among our people and I know that you all actually might agree with the
8:47
commentary going on here anyway I just just to kind get us kicked off here I was so impressed Apple had an immense
8:55
Challenge on their hands to come in late like this and and work AI in in a way
9:01
that's practical and useful and easy to use it was a huge challenge coming in
9:07
from behind and dude they nailed it like beat for beat I I was blown away at the
9:14
features that they at that they showcased and they did it in such a condensed period of time to come in from
9:21
behind like this with all this functionality and I think that their
9:27
success was certainly reflected in the stock market their stock price for the first time ever surged past $200 a share
9:35
yesterday and now it's it's sitting at 2115 so I think in like the last week
9:40
yeah in the last week it's up 10% after years of going sideways this was the
9:46
thing that made Wall Street go yeah they've got something special here and
9:53
the Investments came pouring in and dude I'll just tell you I did a little stock price check last night
10:01
baby this morning they passed Nvidia and Microsoft did they really oh my gosh
10:07
you're right they're sitting at 3 point almost 3.3 um trillion market cap now
10:13
and Microsoft's been sitting ahead for a while man they really positioned themselves so well uh my I'll just do
10:21
this right up at the top because I was going to mention it for those of you that um that care not to not to brag but
10:27
this was something that we've talked about in past shows so years ago I don't even know when this was Lou were you
10:32
around when I started this whole stock price challenge uh I don't I don't know if I
10:38
was okay on the podcast necessarily right when it started but maybe I think it was I actually think I was because I
10:44
was annoyed that you you started with 95,000 instead of 100,000 I just wanted
10:50
you to do a nice round number you know sell a little blood pick it up to the right number so I'm still not sure
10:57
exactly how much I spent I think I spent $96,000 in Apple stock and it was just it was just under
11:04
$100,000 and and I converted a bunch of stock into Apple stock just to see what would happen and I've done updates over
11:10
the years well I checked it last night and I am sitting at just under
11:16
$200,000 now in Apple stock I made like $155,000
11:21
yesterday that's 401 okay and and funny enough I'll tell you
11:28
part of this money was money that I put into a brokerage account years ago like probably right before I started the
11:35
Apple stock Challenge and I dumped in like 15K because we wanted to buy a car
11:41
and I was like we're not going to buy it right away so I'm going to just put it in here and ended up buying Apple stock
11:47
with that money so about $155,000 I checked it yesterday I completely forgot about this account I completely forgot
11:54
about it I checked it yesterday guess how much is it worth just take a guess
12:01
with this is Apple stock only or this 100% Apple stock yeah and you put in 15 yeah I don't know
12:09
I'm gonna guess 30 it's a good good guess sounds like it would if if well
12:15
yeah I mean what you're saying the other one went up 100% so why would it not be about the same yeah well I bought it
12:21
before I made that oh long time ago uh yeah I don't know how long ago it was but it was before my other Apple stock
12:28
purchased it's worth $40,000 now I just checked this account and I was like
12:35
there's $40,000 sitting in here I haven't even looked at this account in probably two years because it's in a
12:41
brokerage account that I don't ever use it's not part of my retirement like 401K stuff and
12:47
so and gee the price of cars has only gone up 100% you better go get a car
12:52
right now dude I know no kidding it's it still buys the same level of car as $115,000 did in 2020 better than not
13:00
having the well that's that's what's really funny we're so far off kilter here I'll stop um we need we need to
13:05
move on I do want to I I do want to do a quick Super Chat hi go last who normally joins us on the TW on a Thursday with
13:12
the $35 Super Chat you guys trying to trick me by going live on a Wednesday now he spelled b by buy which I think he
13:20
did on purpose because he's trying to buy our favor oh we're gonna have Hugo on we're gonna do something with him
13:27
maybe once the stock goes nuclear I can bring you on as my butler Hugo I don't know what you do professionally but I
13:32
presume you're probably a pretty good driver I'll pay you well we'll talk about it uh man
13:40
accepting applications yeah leis when you're ready to retire maybe you could come be my
13:46
driver think how much fun that'd be sounds awesome all right can't wait we're look we're way off kilter here um
13:54
before we keep going I do want to thank our sponsor for this episode how preent
14:01
is this how precious preent is this notion
14:07
is a place where any team can write plan organize and red ReDiscover the joy of play notion discovers I can't even read
14:14
today notion combines your notes and docks into one place that's simple and beautifully designed with the power of
14:20
AI built right inside not a separate AI tool or browser tab but you're like wait a second but but but apple is now
14:27
integrating notes integrating AI into their app dude if you want to use
14:33
tomorrow's features today you still need to consider notion even with the stuff that Apple announced notion goes Way
14:41
Beyond what apple is doing Apple's offering like a base level of features
14:47
but notion beats it and does stuff that the notes app could never hope to do like project management like being able
14:54
to build a Wiki that your team can query to get answers from and so much more and
15:00
there's a reason that so many people are switching to notion to manage their
15:06
projects to keep track of their lives to manage their businesses to work on projects together it just does so much
15:12
stuff that it is definitely worth considering if you're someone who's into
15:17
productivity and feels like your current productivity apps are not serving you and you also want the power of AI to
15:23
serve you head on over to notion.com cultcast try notion for free when you go
15:29
to notion.com cultcast that's all lowercase letters notion.com cultcast
15:34
and start turning your ideas into action and when you use our link you're supporting our show notion.com
15:42
cultcast notion.com cultcast okay let's Dive Right In with the big
15:49
story it's me right yeah it is me just making sure I need some AI on my side
15:55
helping me maybe I should get my neural link uh connected to AI that might
16:02
help AI powered Siri is the new face of Apple intelligence when I was watching
16:08
this kyot I was like you son of up they're going to change the name Siri and I'm going to have not voted for my
16:14
own prediction but they didn't do it they kept it a Siri Lewis I think they
16:19
did completely change The Branding like it looks completely different it has a new logo but the name is the same I
16:25
actually love the new branding and if this delivers the way I think it's going to I think this is the Siri that we always
16:31
wanted I really actually have high hops like for it being able to understand you
16:36
to understand the context that you're speaking of for it to be able to understand the words that you're trying
16:42
to use and perform actions for you of course I tweeted if it only did one thing I would be happy just understand
16:49
what I'm trying to say to you in dictation I honestly think that would actually be enough for me but dude I I I
16:57
was sitting there just kind of shaking my head thinking like this is it this paired with the power of chat GPT and
17:04
open AI is the Siri that we have always wanted what were your thoughts I see I
17:09
see you kind of like nodding over there leis your impression I me you know the demo looked awesome
17:17
yeah it you know uh it worked great in previous WWDC Keynotes as well when they
17:24
promised great Siri you know how much better Siri was going to be right so
17:29
we'll see I mean I have High Hopes I I they've pinned you know a lot of uh a
17:36
lot of their future on all this stuff right so it better work as planned yeah we don't know how it's
17:41
going to work until we actually get our hands on it that much is true but the reason it gives me so much hope is
17:47
because I believe in in open AI everyone's using them and I have a lot
17:52
of experience with their technology maybe not a lot but I have experience with their technology and it's it's so
17:58
it's so highly functional like it just predictably delivers the kinds of results that you would expect and that
18:04
was Siri big problem I'm going to go ahead and go to the story here and just read some of this to make sure I don't miss
18:10
anything uh in the keynote they said thanks to the capabilities of Apple intelligence AKA chat gbt this year Mar
18:17
start wait to be clear yeah apple intelligence isn't solely powered by chat gbt it's using Apple's Own
18:23
Foundation models okay that's fair but I do think that there is a lot of chat G
18:29
magic that is going into this do you think the only integration with chpt and open AI is like uh was at the very end
18:36
of the keynote when like you know if if you ask a question that Siri can't answer it'll it'll ask It'll ask you if
18:41
you want to ask chat jpt as well in the same way that like you know Siri will throw out to Woolf from alpha if you ask
18:48
in a math question all of the all of the Siri stuff is entirely powered by Apple's Own Foundation model and their
18:54
own in-house llms okay now that is something I did not understand
18:59
that is interesting so the chat gbt is only being activated when you ask it a question that's probably not being done
19:05
on device when you specifically give it I mean I don't know if you saw it but it
19:10
pops up a thing that says it seems like chat GPT could help you with this question would you like to ask chat GPT
19:17
there's a popup like a a guard rail like you you have to say yes ask chat
19:24
GPT well I just went full there I thought was a great way of uh incorporating uh soft you know not
19:30
software but AI that everybody is I don't know not about everybody but a lot of people have concerns about right uh
19:37
so I thought I thought it was brilliant I mean the way that they handled that so uh I didn't mean to derail I think this
19:44
is a lot better this way like my my concern going into this we we just can't
19:49
stick to the story this week we all have so many opinions but my concern going into this was that there were rumors that apple had developed an internal llm
19:57
for Apple employees use but they weren't going to release to the public and that the rumor was that uh the new Siri would
20:06
be like almost entirely built on top of chat gbt you know and that's what I was that's what I was scared of because like
20:12
you know apple apple philosophically it's it's like the Tim Cook Doctrine Apple needs to own and
20:18
control all of the foundational Technologies in their products and like
20:25
the the fact that they were able to pull this off and you know roll out their Own Foundation model like I watched the um
20:30
developer State of the Union that goes into more a little more technical depth uh on how this all works and it's really
20:36
impressive like they have this what they call the foundation AI model that's like One Singular model that they can keep
20:44
like persistently loaded into storage and then they have like these different plugins that they can throw on top of it
20:49
to turn the foundation model into an llm or the uh you know photo image transforming thing or the generative AI
20:57
stuff so you know they don't have to you know so it has a much lesser impact on
21:02
the battery and like the memory and all that anyways you you can go back to well
21:08
now I'm a little now I'm a little more dubious I think it's great because like
21:13
it means they can run it in another benefit is that they can run it entirely on device right and that's part of the
21:19
reason why it's only exclusive why it only runs on the very latest hardware
21:24
and only higher configurations of their very latest Hardware like they currently sell an like their most recent phone the
21:31
iPhone 15 can't run it at all it's only the iPhone 15 Pro because that's how
21:36
powerful like this these AI features are interesting in order to make it run on device well I do like that sorry go
21:42
ahead l no I should say I saw like uh Ming quo and some other people were talking about like oh it requires this
21:48
amount of dam I think it said is that right is that the right term I'm not sure like it it requires a certain
21:55
amount of ram to be able to work and that's why it has to be these end devices because Apple always skips on
22:00
RAM and uh yeah I don't know I mean so I don't know if they got into this but how
22:07
and here we go again H but how different is this new thing from the thing that is
22:12
currently the Apple you know AI running Siri how how did you get a feel for that
22:17
I mean did they address that like oh this is actually eight times better it's a completely different technology
22:23
because uh Siri as it exists today you know there's the part that
22:28
that converts your uh what you say into words then you know so you have like the the string of input like your question
22:35
that is uh interpreted by current Siri programmatically not using a neural
22:41
network and that means that uh it has to it it anal it has like a fixed set of
22:47
rules that it uses to like break apart the grammar and the syntax of your sentence and then it plugs that into and
22:53
it goes down like you know a manual checklist of uh well here are the possible things you could be asking for and these are the limited set of
23:00
functions that I can do on this information like every new request to S
23:05
like everything that Apple wants Siri to do has to be manually programmed in place both by Apple in order to parse
23:12
the sentence and by developers in order to make it do anything that's why Siri
23:17
that's why Siri is so terrible because like everything that Siri does has to be done in advance and like you know there
23:23
has to be like a designated path laid out for it to do what's great about this area is that it has an llm that can
23:29
interpret the context of what you're asking as a human and it's built on a
23:34
powerful new intense framework like it's basically exactly what I what I've been asking for on this show like uh there's
23:42
we're working on that by the way we're going to build in the intense engine and stuff don't worry we're gonna get we're gonna get to that yeah oh yeah like uh
23:48
like developers can like describe all of the features in their app they can describe like this button does this the
23:56
uh this feature does this and and then Siri can use the power of an llm to intelligently
24:02
map uh your question to actions it can take inside the amp and do it for
24:08
you yeah and and just for those of you that may not be familiar with the jargon like when we talk about intense I know
24:13
that sounds like it's like wow that's intense it's what are you trying to accomplish right what are you trying to do and llms are pretty good at figuring
24:23
out what your intent is like what action are you trying to take and then going and doing those things for you and it eliminates all the programming that has
24:31
to happen to identify like a clear path and like the steps that need to happen when you're trying to take an action and it just go it goes and figures that
24:37
stuff out on its own and so it's a lot more it can be a lot more scalable and
24:43
require less developer intervention to to make changes and as a certain set of
24:50
conditions change it can react dynamically and change its Behavior so that you're still getting the same
24:55
outcome that you want without this is basically the large action model that uh
25:00
the rabbit R1 that you remember that little device they bragged about having a large action model and it turned out to be a complete lie or the Humane AI
25:08
pin they they tried to do the same thing but you know it's it has to it has to learn about you over time the advantage
25:15
is that first of all Apple actually has the software Foundation to make a a large action
25:20
model that actually works because developers have been develop you know baking in intense Frameworks into their
25:28
apps like over the last 10 years and your phone already knows everything about you so like they already have the
25:34
pool of information to draw from like the other important element of what makes this work is comes from Spotlight
25:42
which is you know the intelligent on Device search thing if an app adds the
25:47
data inside the app to What's called the spotlight index like you know the Gmail app for example uh you you have all of
25:55
your emails on your phone uh Gmail can say to the system this is the content of
26:02
all the email on this phone uh so that when somebody searches you know Delta
26:07
flight from the home screen of their iPhone it can bring up the Delta flight
26:13
out of the email in the Gmail app that's another key part of this so and that's what
26:19
powers some of the new new series superpowers because you can ask for example this is the example they gave in
26:24
their keynote um play that podcast Jamie recommends so it can go into messages it can go
26:31
into the podcasts app um if Marco Armen implements this it'll be able to go into
26:36
the overcast app and you know piece together all these different Clues from all these different areas of your phone
26:42
and you know turn it into an action model an action that it can take so that it opens the podcast app and starts
26:48
playing it yeah being able to do stuff across different apps and well just to
26:54
first of all understand what your intents are and what you're trying to accomplish and being able to do things across apps and being able to understand
27:00
context like send me that podcast that my wife sent me from a week ago or whatever and like the fact that it could
27:06
even have a hope of doing that we could go on and on and on about Apple intelligence there's so many features
27:12
that they that they outlined I mean there's the writing tools that help you be a better writer there's the priority
27:19
notifications and also in mail where it's showing you the stuff that it thinks that you might want to see uh the
27:25
summary of long emails which I hope that I'll be able to do with my dad's text messages um uh there was just so much
27:32
stuff that it did and I just kept thinking to myself wow this is definitely the Siri it presuming that it
27:39
works now that I know that it's not powered by open AI which I thought that it was thank you Griffin presuming that
27:44
it works and apple actually got their llms fine-tuned this could be the Siri that
27:50
we always hoped for and imagine being able to say uh Lewis has a flight and
27:57
can't join the show today instead of has being capital h s it's h s leis wow what
28:04
wouldn't that be a breakr that's the that's the future I I want to live in and then there's like the smart replies
28:10
they talked about um being able to like be presented with a menu of um of
28:16
replies to questions within an email that you can like click on buttons to answer like there's just all sorts of
28:22
crazy wacky stuff that I'm excited to play around with um I don't know know I
28:28
was I was completely impressed what was your takeaway Griffin I know you kind of got in the details but like high level what were you thinking when they were
28:34
showcasing this stuff so over the weekend before the keynote I I put out a video that's like
28:39
my wish list for WWDC and you know virtually none of the actual features I asked for they implemented presumably
28:45
because theyve pulled in every engineer to in order to make this work for Monday but uh part of the AI stuff that I
28:52
wanted to see I wanted to know a few things in advance like apple really has a chance to different themselves from
28:59
the uh worst players in the market by telling by clearly telegraphing uh what
29:06
the training data for these features is you know what the energy impact on the world is going to be because again these
29:12
are traditionally with with some of the competitors very energy intense uh
29:18
processes that they're trying to do what the energy impact will be uh whether I can trust the data whether it'll be
29:24
private and apple being Apple they did very clearly Telegraph the the Privacy
29:29
angle and they they went into a lot of depth on the uh developer State of the Union about how the how they engineered
29:37
the uh private Cloud compute to actually be private and secure and basically as
29:42
close to open source as they can do uh it's very impressive I encourage you to read my summary article on it if you're
29:48
curious I won't get into the technical details here but you know they're very clear on the Privacy angle in follow-up
29:54
interviews I'm surprised they didn't mention this during the keynote because because in follow-up interviews they were very clear like with the talk show
30:01
live just last night they said oh no like part of the reason private Cloud compute runs on Apple silicon is because
30:08
Apple silicon is incredibly energy efficient like we've been making energy efficient chips that run on device for
30:14
you know 15 years now and so we're using the same energy efficient chips in inside our server Farms too and all
30:21
those server Farms are 100% carbon neutral because they're all powered by
30:27
solar wind and it's not like they're buying carbon offset credits after the fact which are usually kind of a scam
30:33
like all of their server Farms are like completely off the grid that's another good point where it gets a little sticky
30:40
and where where I'm kind of disappointed is when they talk about training data because especially for the image
30:46
Generation stuff um they said like a few people have
30:51
asked you know where where how are you training all of these images for all these you know art tools that you're
30:57
giving people and they didn't have a very good answer they said uh yeah we're just we're just scraping stuff online
31:03
basically which I'm kind of disappointed by like even even Adobe is saying is like explicitly clarifying that they're
31:11
licensing all the images that go into Power Adobe Firefly um but you know we're two for
31:17
three yeah that's that's pretty good in my opinion on ethics and I do love I
31:23
mean we got to move on from this but I I really loved how they explained to be a motion graphics artist
31:29
working for Apple who's like hey hey y'all we need a graphic that explains privacy in the cloud and and they they
31:35
delivered one that worked so beautifully but Apple's transparency
31:41
and uh showcase on like how they're going to integrate privacy into all this
31:47
I I found to be actually quite quite convincing because no one's really talking about any of this stuff I know
31:52
that Apple actually does care about privacy and I trust them with my data to
31:58
abuse it and misuse it they're probably the only company that I actually trust with it um there probably other ones out
32:03
there but certainly from like a large corporate perspective like I actually believe that they'll treat my data correctly and not abuse it so it makes
32:11
me want to use these features more anyway we got to move on there's so much other stuff to talk about and we got let's start the show we gotta be done we
32:19
gotta be done in an hour so I'm gonna send it to you Louis to talk about image playground this this was I made a list
32:26
of all my favorite features and I mean Griffin and uh as Lewis
32:33
panics this was one of the ones that made my list of things that I came away thinking like this is actually really
32:39
cool and I would I would probably use this all the time take it away gripster sure so in iOS 18 you'll be able to use
32:46
the power of Apple intelligence to generate fun relevant images in your text conversations that starts with what
32:52
they're calling gen Emoji uh adding add it to the list of weird portmantos of
32:57
emoji that they've tried to do over the years an emoji memoji maybe this one will end we'll see
33:04
from the keyboard you can create a new Emoji when you can't find the right one built in so if you're trying to send the ostrich Emoji or a trombone Emoji uh
33:12
well you can make your own and uh send it right along you describe what you want and you can pick from a few
33:18
different choices I think it's really cool how you know U at least in the examples they gave they all they they
33:25
all clearly look like you know apple design these emojis I really I'm really curious what the training data for this
33:30
is because like the the Apple emoji art style is a very specific kind of style
33:36
so and obviously these only work within messages and like supported third party
33:42
apps it's not like you can type a gen Emoji into mail in line with the text
33:48
because that's you know just these These are being generated as images you know they can't live mod modify the Unicode
33:55
spec on the fly like this but that's kind of nifty um here's where it gets a
34:01
little sticky and weird for me personally I was assigned to write the story and this is maybe like the one apple intelligence feature that makes me
34:09
feel kind of uncomfortable you can create gen emoji that resemble the people you're talking to uh here's a
34:15
quote because Apple intelligence is aware of who's in your photo library you can simply pick someone and create a gen
34:22
emoji that looks just like them wish someone a happy birthday and you can generate a cartoon image of them
34:29
specifically that makes me weird um you can also create custom artwork of any
34:35
kind using a tool called image playground that makes it really easy it comes with a big variety of prompts that
34:41
you can pick from and because it all happens on device you can generate as many images as you want one after
34:47
another and you can get the results in just a few seconds uh this is available inside messages but you can also find it
34:53
in keynote Pages free form and it'll even have its own Standalone app and there's an image playground API for
35:01
third party apps to uh tie into it too it's kind of nifty like you know the
35:07
interface for it like in notes you can Circle A Sketch that you've done and have it turn it into a yeah I thought
35:14
that was super cool AI garbage looking image or you can also Circle an empty white space in your note and it'll look
35:21
at the context around it and try to come up with a brand new image that that fits in how do you guys feel feel about
35:29
it well I I mean so they I can't remember the exact things right but they said that they could generate images in
35:35
three different styles right animation I think illustration and I can't remember what the last one was SK sketch so so
35:43
you know this is to me it's kind of typical of what they've done right let's they they're they're narrowing the scope of what AI can do right because if you
35:49
go to like mid Journey or something giant nightmare you got to get on Discord you got to pay money you got to
35:55
get credits you got to use some Arcane prompt which you know once right but you
36:00
got to use that to do it then it like takes forever and then it sends you a text hey it's done it oh do you want did
36:07
you want it actually high definition I mean they so I mean and and that's super powerful
36:13
right you say oh I want a picture of Griffin that looks like it's painted by You Know da Vinci or Picasso or a
36:18
combination and it'll do it so but so Apple says oh let's just give them three let's give them three ways that we can
36:25
generate an image so it it cuts back the options but it puts it right on your device you don't have to jump through a bunch of Hoops I thought this whole
36:30
thing was cool I I don't know how I I never really thought about the whole thing about like using it to
36:38
create Emojis with your you know friends or enemies uh that could be a little odd
36:43
but I'm sure Apple will put something in place so that people you know people don't end up like weirding everyone out
36:50
or something I mean I wonder where they pull those pictures from actually is it does it come from your photo library or does it come from the contact image if
36:56
you if you match if you go into photos and you assign names to all of the people in your photo library uh like an obsessive weirdo like
37:03
I do then it'll use that as training data but but what about for instance uh
37:09
well I don't have any actual photographs of Fon in my my photo library but I have a picture of him in the contact contact
37:17
card right or maybe or you can just Google it and get some pictures from any of these videos and just take a screenshot and put it on your photo
37:22
library but I I just wonder how where exactly Apple's pulling that information from you know know because yeah what
37:28
happens if you only have like one or two pictures of somebody or none at allone only a contact poster or something I
37:34
mean it seems like that would kind of be fair game you know because the person made it but then again it's it's I mean
37:40
how do they get around oh you stole my contact poster I suppose when you create a contact poster Apple says that it you
37:47
know technically they they own it or something I don't know I I I don't have any idea about that I mean if you that's
37:53
one of the big problems though with all this AI stuff right they're training these models and all these things all these copyrighted images and all these
38:00
you know words that are not their words so it'll be
38:05
interesting apple apple did a great job of of saying here are all these amazing
38:11
easy to understand features that we're going to roll out later this year um but they didn't give you any
38:19
time to think about any of these complex problems that exist with this AI generate stuff right I mean that it it
38:26
was just also bubbly and user friendly we don't even
38:32
know if these are problems I mean the the definition of a problem is going to vary from person to person like all the
38:38
things that you just highlighted Griffin like those things don't bother me at all I don't care if someone creates a cartoony image of me I don't think that
38:44
any of my friends or family would care now maybe friends and family of somebody
38:50
else or maybe your friends and family would care but like these things seem like they're so uh
38:55
innocuous it's like oh you made a picture of me wearing sunglasses I'm so mad it's like I I don't know I don't
39:01
think that the I'm sure that the uh the Genai model that they're using is
39:08
probably got some serious limitations included in it it's not going to like hey I want you to create true you know
39:14
an image of Judy e Heath on a pole dancing it's like a doubt it's gonna deliver that although I should try you
39:20
know that's gonna be your very first clest isn't it I mean I mean but yeah you know if they if you say oh make a
39:28
make a what whatever you just said I mean what's it going to say oh no sorry I don't have access to that or it may
39:33
just do what all the other gen images do now they just don't make it for you you like some of them do tell you no but
39:39
some of them will make you an image and it's just like nothing that you even asked for and there's all sorts of problems like that with with image um
39:47
generation engine engines now and so it could be either or but I I yeah I I
39:54
agree this is like far down the line but I mean you know like let's say you said you know make a a gen Emoji of Salvador
40:01
doy where's it is it going to just say no sorry I can't do that or is it going to say oh here's this pcture this
40:06
copyrighted photograph that somebody took a long time ago that we scraped I I don't know I all it's super early days
40:13
for any of this right yeah and this is like the Wild West it's not even in the betas right it's it's none of this stuff is in the betas and this is the fact
40:20
that it's soad no no you go ahead the fact that it's so limited might uh help
40:26
them circumvent some of the ethical questions and that like you know can you ask for art generated in a specific
40:32
style probably not and so that then you know it it'd be harder for people on DV and art to say ah you you you copied my
40:40
my art style to you know to as training data in your feature like if you can't
40:46
ask for like you know to imitate specific art styles then you know that that sort of that sort of a gray area
40:52
that Dodges the question at least but you know for some people like another
40:57
a a broader question that I have and you know what I think is a more interesting question is like what happens if because
41:03
like a problem with the a lot of um llms and generative stuff is that like whether it has an answer or not it's
41:12
going to give you an answer because it doesn't actually know anything it's just trying to come up with an answer to
41:17
comply with your question like the most reasonably sounding response so what I'm really curious about is does the uh new
41:25
version of Siri if you ask it hey what time does my mom's flight land when she hasn't you know taken a flight
41:33
or a vacation in years what's it going to what's it going to respond to's it what's it gonna say yeah another
41:38
question that's super good question and and that's that's why I say like all this stuff looks fantastic in the demos
41:44
we'll see how it works because right now I can say hey Play song XYZ by some band
41:50
that exists and I can PR pronounce it perfectly three times in a row and it'll
41:56
never happen you know sometimes I mean you know certain certain songs for whatever reason it just glitches out and
42:03
won't work I mean that seems like a no-brainer thing that it ought to be able to do right now and I mean here's
42:09
the thing Apple hasn't talked about that at all it doesn't matter how smart Siri is if it if the speech to text hasn't
42:15
improved whatsoever between iOS 17 to 18 is that what are you concerned about that at all I mean I think everybody who
42:23
uses it is concerned about it because it it just keeps getting worse the smarter they make it the worse it works and so
42:29
now they're talking about like let's give it you know let's make it super smart Okay well what if what if it's like extra bad I mean I don't think they
42:35
would make it extra bad because it's already bad enough and they would be if
42:41
they if they release something that works worse than it it does now they're G to get hammered hammered by everybody
42:48
stock price going right back down okay we got to move on we've got 45 minutes left and we have a lot to get through we
42:54
got we got to go ahead and uh keep it moving but before we do I just want to give a quick shout out to my own product
43:00
which I think is quite high quality it should be something that you should consider for your own life if you have
43:06
cameras or lenses or if your glasses wear or you have an iPhone or an iPad or
43:11
a nice television C cloth. for the finest highest grade cleaning cloth that you're going to find anywhere in the
43:18
Galaxy anywhere in the entire galaxy these are it these are where you want to go and I'll keep this short and sweet if
43:26
you are ready to keep your devices sparkling clean I invite you to go to c.co pick up some for yourself and for a
43:33
limited time you can get a free extra carry cloth with code cultcast at
43:38
checkout at cult cloth. Lewis you're going to have to motor mouth your way through all these
43:43
features we can't spend the next 30 minutes on this I'm GNA give you I got a real quick question yeah it does cult
43:49
cloth is it now have ai power it's always been powered by AI in fact we we
43:54
had AI agents help design it so I didn't want to talk about that that's patented
43:59
so but you could read about it in the patent okay so yeah we've we've been far ahead of the curve uh excellent yeah I
44:04
didn't want to brag but yeah it definitely is all right let's talk about all the features coming to iOS 18 and how AI is
44:12
going to make our lives so much better than they currently are I can't I'll just let uh the silver tonged and
44:17
silver-haired Craig fedi explain it in one short sentence iOS 18 is a big
44:22
release that delivers more ways to customize your iPhone stay connected and relive special moments that's what these
44:30
eight three things it does three things it's the apple way here are three things that this does all right well let's move
44:36
on we're done okay let's see for some specifics let's see photos app he he said that the biggest photos redesign
44:42
ever uh AI photo editing tools allow for customization and organization uh you
44:47
know like putting together folders or whatever or bringing together images
44:53
from thing I me there's always some of this stuff in this already right but uh
44:58
somehow left out of our write up here in the notes is the fact that it's going to allow you to clean up images like zap I
45:06
love the picture they had the example picture they had of people on the beach with like some you know Joker in the
45:11
background with a metal detector it's just like boom tap it gone disappeared that's all great stuff all kinds of
45:17
things all kinds of apps already do that but it'll be nice to have that built into the photos app let's see messages
45:23
app text effects which uh let you um I don't know it's kind of like the
45:28
tapback effects that already exists for certain things but you know the words can jiggle there's going to be a certain
45:34
preset kind of things uh that so you can make your your text messages extra
45:39
eye-catching uh the tapback feature I just mentioned that that thing you know that's the thing that lets you put like
45:44
a gray heart or a thumbs up or whatever on a reply right to a thing they needed to
45:51
they needed to overhaul the system for adding emojis to messages forever like that I don't know how they arrived at
45:57
the decision to give you like five options for your message replies and gray and gray one of the worst
46:05
implementations of of uh Emoji reactions I've seen anywhere in the tech world and
46:10
so they finally fixed it I remember the first time I saw that I was like what why is that gray it's it's just weird
46:16
right I mean anyway so now they're going full color in iOS 18 and you can reply with any Emoji it's just going to be way
46:23
different way better uh let's see you're going to be able to schedule messages to be sent later that's G be awesome pretty
46:29
useful you know if you don't want to B someone at 12 a.m. it's great it's actually super now that this is like the
46:36
way that everybody communicates every single thing in the world now it's taking over email this is the way this
46:41
it's very useful you can say hey because I find myself doing that all the time like I I gotta send this text to this
46:46
person but oh my God it's it's midnight anyway so that'll be nice uh
46:52
let's see the last thing and this was for some reason Leander wrote the post about this he put this in the headline like it is the most exciting thing it is
46:58
interesting satellite messaging is going to be available in iOS 18 which works the same way as like the emergency SOS
47:04
via satellite thing does so if you're somewhere where you got no sell service you can still send and receive texts
47:09
which is kind of wild yeah cool uh let's see oh my God we have only just started
47:15
you're doing great okay keep going home screen home screen customization as somewhat as described you know you're
47:21
going to be able to change up your home screen a lot you're going to be able to move the icons around you know not you
47:27
the grid is gone you can put them wherever you want they did nice way of showing like oh you can use this with a photo so that the stupid app icons Don't
47:35
You Know cover up the fun parts of the photo uh there's also a way to recolor icons
47:42
you could go with light icons or dark icons color tinted icons uh this was
47:48
kind of different from the rumors you know the rumors I heard was like oh it's going to be like you can tint all your bank apps green or you can tank take uh
47:56
all your social media apps that make you angry and make them red right but no it's just like one color right
48:02
systemwide as far as I can tell from the demo I think it I mean it's cool but it does kind of create some funky looks to
48:07
the icons I think I don't think they look better when you color them I saw I saw quite a few um negative remarks
48:14
about that on X the it's worth pointing out that third party apps uh only have limited support
48:21
for that like it app developers will need to upload a new version of their app icon to make it work with iOS 18 and
48:27
make it look really good so right now it's only Apple apps that do it really well at this
48:32
point okay let's see uh control center everybody's favorite uh underutilized
48:39
way of getting into all the things that are most important you speak for yourself I it's it's appropriately
48:44
utilized in my world I use I love it I I know I know tons of people are like what's that yeah they never they never
48:51
use it I mean it's shocking but anyway uh it's it's going to be fully customizable which is also very exciting
48:56
right you can add and remove toggle switches from the new controls Gallery organize buttons across multiple
49:01
different pages of a control center you know with the easy like swipe that looked very slick uh let's see control P
49:09
control API is going to let third party developers add their own buttons totally awesome because I I use it all the time
49:15
too man I use I use control center all the time uh I didn't quite understand
49:21
this last part you use same controls to replace flashlight and Camera shortcuts on the lock screen it wasn't clear to me
49:26
what what you could what you could put there but any of the same controls that you can add to control center can also
49:32
use to yeah any of them you can swap out the flashlight or the camera I just tested this today
49:39
different lock screens can have different buttons on the bottom and even if you replace the
49:45
camera button for a different one like I don't know stopwatch you can still swipe
49:51
on the lock screen to get to the camera even if the camera button isn't there that's cool I mean it's it's always been
49:56
Weir to me that they've got these two buttons that have like you know like Prime Time placement on the iPhone and
50:02
they're just there right what is it h so anyway uh let's see uh moving on
50:09
Safari Safari is going to in when they I don't know what version this is I can never keep track of that is it do they
50:15
even give it a version number I don't care about such things yeah all right uh so it's going to be able to use machine
50:21
learning to automatically detect relevant information on a web page and highlight it for you like directions
50:27
summaries quick links to learn more about people music movies and TV shows sounds a lot like uh the way Google
50:35
already surfaces stuff like that right in their quick search results uh reader mode is going to provide a table of
50:41
contents and helpful summary right next to the article you might never have to read a full article again that's great
50:47
news for web Publishers uh let's see uh when Safari detects a video on the page
50:52
viewer mode puts it front and center while allowing full access to system playback controls like AirPlay and
50:58
picture picture I you know I somehow I must have crossed my eyes during this this part of the presentation I don't even remember seeing this but uh man I
51:06
mean sometimes I go to a web page I want to watch a video on it I can't even find the video our website too playing
51:11
somewhere so many ads and so much garbage anyway okay I don't understand why
51:17
airpods pro is listed here under uh iOS but uh I'll go ahead and talk it anyway
51:23
uh because I thought this was a totally a cool part of this presentation took like a minute or whatever but so airpods
51:29
Pro are going to gain the ability to answer calls or reject them by silently nodding or shaking your head that's
51:36
awesome dude yeah I also love the fact that in the uh thing when in the little stupid uh demo or whatever it says
51:44
STFU like like STFU that was my edit of it that wasn't in the keynote oh it wasn't in it no oh
51:52
TC you tampered with the video oh my God I I take it all back Griffin Griffin
51:59
dropped an sdfu in there let's see uh that's going to come in handy you know if you're on a uh and I have I've
52:05
totally understood you know you're on a the the picture they had was perfect you're standing on an elevator and
52:10
somebody calls you and like you don't want to say oh sorry Jim I can't I mean what I would do is just silence the call
52:16
with my Apple watch yeah but uh anyway it's kind of cool uh let's see final
52:22
thing here in this iOS section is uh the passwords app which we you know this
52:27
this news broke before the event but uh looks very awesome dedicated password app it's going to work on iOS iPad OS
52:33
and Mac OS basically repackages the iCloud keychain features into a userfriendly
52:38
interface um sorry dash lane sorry last
52:44
pass uh I I mean I use uh I use dashine every day I use password manager for
52:50
everything I it's lifechanging I still run into people who don't use password managers and I can't believe it I hope
52:56
this encourages everybody to uh because it'll be right there on your thing and it sounds like it's going to be free I didn't hear anything about any pricing
53:03
any of the stuff costing history it just sound like it's all going to be free and your iPhone's going to be better than ever and that's that's a honestly them
53:11
making a password manager is that that's probably a good thing for
53:16
Humanity it's also coming to Windows leis the app is coming to Windows man
53:22
I'm excited about that this is you know cuz you need to manage your Apple passwords on Windows too now they have
53:28
built the some extensions that help you do this on Windows which are good and they're slowly making updates to it but
53:35
I think this app is long overdue people have been using keychain for a long time to like figure out what their passwords
53:41
are and there is a passwords app with or section within the settings app that you can go to which I use all the time but I
53:46
don't know how people I don't know if people actually know that it's there and actually use it yeah it's definitely
53:52
kind of less known so like having an app that you can use to manage all your password words is definitely going to be
53:58
useful is that it is that all of them yeah that is all okay going to me now to
54:03
talk about iPads St most I think if not everything should take more than 30 seconds is well you missed one big thing
54:09
lo you missed one big thing I did what what well maybe two big things the first
54:15
big thing how about a big calculator leis a big old calculator come into the
54:21
iPad I already use calbot so whatever I don't think I really need a calculator but I know a lot of people don't want to pay for it so whatever now you have a
54:28
calculator app coming to the iPad with a bunch of new math features which looked pretty cool uh it has a math notes
54:35
feature that takes advantage of apple pencil allowing users to type or write out mathematical expressions and see them uh instantly solved in their own
54:42
handwriting man that was some we're not even we can't even SC they had almost
54:47
two hours of succinct video editing to get all these features out there there's no way we could possibly even cover all these but like the handwriting features
54:53
that they showed where you could like Scribble out notes and have them be deleted oh yeah that looked awesome do math problems finally caught up to the Newton
54:59
in 1994 on that regard oh geez yeah it's like the Newton but better but there's just all sorts of cool stuff that they
55:05
built in uh that I think are going to make using an apple pencil on the iPad way more compelling like if you were in
55:10
school and you were like taking notes you could solve math problems within your notes that seems like it'd be kind
55:15
of useful you're also getting the uh the Calc app as I mentioned but one of the big things that no one is talking about
55:22
that I was stunned that no one's even mentioning are the new new AirPlay features that allow you to take control
55:29
of another person's device and finally fix things remotely that has been so
55:35
sorely needed for so many years I mean not so there's two features that they highlighted like you could draw on their
55:41
screen which that alone is hugely helpful and just be like hey click on that this one here to take it to the
55:47
next level and have you just be able to request control of another person's iPad or iPhone and just do the changes for
55:54
them I'm actually not sure if this is a good a bad thing cuz now my parents can call me and say fix my iPad right now
56:00
they just don't bother cuz like he's not coming over to fix my iPad today but now they wow will learn that they can do it
56:05
remotely so an immensely useful helpful feature for the IT people those of us
56:12
out there that are our family's it people like being able to do this now I didn't see that this feature was added to uh Mao AOA I'm presuming that it is
56:21
it's already in there is it you can take control okay I I guess I never get asked to fix anyone else's Mac so it's only
56:28
iPads cuz all my family has iPads so being able to do that is going to be uh
56:34
immensely helpful I think that's it yeah is it just iPad or is it also iPhone
56:39
it's it's iOS and iPad OS yeah it's both um they had to they had to put something
56:45
in the iPad section you know yeah if you go to the Apple website showing the
56:51
features for like Mac OS iPad OS iOS it's all the pages look exactly the same
56:57
they're all getting the same features which I believe is a point for me so actually I can't remember how I voted so
57:03
I I don't know uh I can't I can't read Griffin's face either he's either laughing at me or he's like yep you
57:09
nailed it bro you nailed it I can't tell what a poker face he has you can't tell you can't read him uh all right send it
57:16
over to you L do the mac and then we'll wrap up with Vision Pro and then our
57:21
predictions yeah so Mac OS uh Clear Lake is I'm sorry Ma macino you
57:30
mean Mac OS Sequoia uh it's going to you know they were pretty light on details
57:37
about things that coming in this too but uh the big thing they kick off was was iPhone mirroring which is quite strange
57:43
iPhone mirroring enables you to W wirelessly mirror your iPhone's display on your Mac with just a tap you can
57:50
troll your iPhone directly from your Mac and use all installed iPhone apps even
57:55
better Mac OS seoa can mirror your iPhone's notifications so you can take action on them directly this is a I I'm
58:02
having a hard time wrapping my head around this one actually uh I don't know that I necessarily needed to control my
58:08
iPhone from my Mac I was trying to Envision what problem this solves because it's not like it's hard to just
58:14
pull up your iPhone and and like the I'll give you an example right now right now I'm using my iPhone and continuity
58:20
camera so that I have a high quality camera while we're doing this video call but I can't use my phone because it's
58:25
right so if I have a notification come in I can I can open the app from my Mac
58:31
that's great there's one another one as pointed out in the thing is if if you're using your iPhone in standby mode you
58:37
don't have to like wow I mean I a lot of people like so so enamored with standby
58:43
mode that they just couldn't bear to like bust out of standby mode uh I'm
58:48
sure there are reasons why this is uh amazing it looked cool but I I'm having a hard time imagining I felt exactly
58:55
like you did I was like boy talk about left field man I did not see this feature coming and I I I don't know what
59:03
their what I don't know what motivated them to expend the engineering resources to make this work because it doesn't
59:10
seem like it would benefit a lot of people and I couldn't really think of a lot of examples where I'm like oh man I
59:15
really wish I could access my phone for my computer it's usually the other way around actually I want to access my computer for my phone cuz my phone is
59:21
always with me but there is one use case that I thought they showed that looked interesting is there's a lot of people who create
59:28
content on their phones and this would make it easy for them to create content
59:34
on their Mac and then and then use their phone to like upload the content or or
59:40
manage their social media or whatever so for production actually could be really useful but there's another example like
59:47
if you're if you have a phone with a broken broken screen you can you know your screen breaks you can fin like copy
59:53
that is interesting yeah it's like it gives it gives life to your device that um it didn't have before so that's four
1:00:01
I'm sure plenty of smart people come up with ways to use this and I can't even Envision but I don't know chat let us
1:00:06
know are we missing something with withing I thought that was a wack like an odd thing to like promote as like the
1:00:13
key highlight of maos Sequoia Flex that's like a great way for
1:00:19
them to flex on how like it's another advantage of Apple silicon because like they develop technology on one platform
1:00:25
and they can bring in as a different feature to other platforms like I think it was like one
1:00:30
or two years ago they implemented like like they they spent a lot of engineering resources making sure that when you screen share Mac to Mac that
1:00:38
it's it's much higher quality lower latency and that's they've been able to turn that
1:00:44
uh that feature set into you know uh screen sharing from a between a Mac and a Vision Pro and now screen sharing
1:00:51
between an iPhone and a Mac I thought of number five how many times have you taken a pict picture on your phone and
1:00:58
you go on the Mac you want to put that picture in there you go to your fo's library it's not there and you say
1:01:04
update it says up last updated one minute ago you took this picture yesterday still not there so there's
1:01:10
there's a fifth thing right there I'm sure there'll be again and and
1:01:15
you know what else you ask why they put all this engineering resource I'll bet you anything that this is just the first
1:01:24
feature that they roll out related to whatever they did that came up with that feature yeah there's probably a whole
1:01:30
road map there okay let's keep it moving I think that uh oh no there's one more thing as Griffin points out uh they uh
1:01:38
they've got they they they've changed the way that window management can work on on the Mac you can drag a apps to the
1:01:43
corner of the display and Mac OS seoa will suggest a tiled position so you can
1:01:49
like turn your your Mac into a beautiful bento box of of uh of of Windows right
1:01:54
which actually sounds pretty good you can also use keyboard shortcuts to arrange apps from the keyboard I I didn't actually see exactly how that
1:02:02
worked either I mean there was a lot going on during that uh that big thing so H see let's also there's there's some
1:02:08
uh new wallpapers which I have a bunch of images inspired by classic Mac OS
1:02:13
operating system so that's I I just said Mac OS operating system my God oh my God
1:02:21
that's it okay good job hey I I'm going to go uh
1:02:27
type in my pin number we gave you all the machine yes we gave you all the
1:02:33
stories that required you to motor mouth you did a good job you got this pretty quick yeah all right we got to talk about
1:02:40
Vision Pro briefly uh Griffin as much as you want to mention about it since you're the one with the Vision Pro and then we'll move on to our predictions or
1:02:47
the conclusion these are just the these are just the top features there's a new feature called spatial photos that are a new way to enjoy pictures in full 3d
1:02:55
they use machine learning to convert two dimensional photos into a spatial photo and they announced this part before they
1:03:02
named dropped Apple intelligence so they said machine learning not Apple intelligence new hand gestures let you
1:03:07
open the home View and control center with just your hands so you don't have to reach up and click the digital Crown which is uh you know I actually found
1:03:14
kind of annoying after a lot of time you can just like hold your hand up and then this little bubble appears then you
1:03:19
either tap your fingers to open the home view or you spin your hand down to open control center I think that's kind of
1:03:25
neat and Mac virtual display which lets you use a virtual monitor with your Mac is
1:03:30
bigger and better you can make the screen ultra wide or the equivalent of two 4K monitors side by side W looks
1:03:37
cool that looked that even made me say wow that looks cool apparently in order to like they
1:03:44
the reason they weren't able to do this before and the reason why you can only do one display at a time in the past is
1:03:50
because like it it just takes a lot of uh bandwidth in communication between the Mac and The Vision Pro but now like
1:03:57
they're like fiated rendering the screen to like compress it over over the air
1:04:03
between the two devices and that's why they're able to get more screen real estate out of it huh interesting okay
1:04:09
what else coming later this year at an indeterminate point and uh there are a few more features that you can read on apple.com but that's all I want to
1:04:15
highlight here all right any that you're excited about here you know it's honestly that the I
1:04:22
was hoping they would do a little bit more with vision OS but um you know honestly the gesture is probably gonna be enough to carry me
1:04:28
through through the year that one gesture oh yeah it's it's so much easier pick the blueberry invisible blueberry
1:04:35
and then you drop it in the bucket and picking your hands are on your lap like and you have to reach up and tap it when
1:04:41
you just want to it's such an e like going home is such an easy gesture to do on the iPhone you're you're you're already holding it in your hand you just
1:04:47
swipe up with your thumb like on the vision probably have to it's like a whole arm movement it's it adds up over
1:04:52
time you know can't have these arm movements no got to go full sedentary uh before we move on to our
1:05:00
predictions I at least wanted to Rattle off my list of the things that stuck with me these are some of the features
1:05:05
that we've already talked about but maybe there's a couple in here that we didn't really talk very much about or about so this these are the things I was
1:05:11
like wow that would seem like something I would use uh I actually did include iPhone miroring in there I thought that
1:05:16
was a wacky one but I was like I feel like I might find that useful in some way um the fix Siri obviously at the
1:05:23
very top of my list image playground I think I'm going to use that actually quite a lot gen Emoji I think might be
1:05:29
my most used feature like being able to do a custom um Emoji for any situation is super useful uh one thing we haven't
1:05:36
talked about is in the photos app you can do um in photo and video search
1:05:41
thanks to Apple intelligence you could search for things like inside of your video or inside of your photos show me
1:05:46
pictures of me on a bed covered with rose petals from 1999 finally I'll be able to find that
1:05:53
picture that I took that I was one of my favorite pictures but it's gone now um Siri product knowledge being able to
1:05:59
query uh using Spotlight asking how to do things and have it provide you step-by-step instructions this is kind
1:06:04
of like a classic llm feature that they've added in there will be helpful for all the noobs and plebs clearly not
1:06:11
something that users of our caliber would need but you know I'm happy for all the other people uh message tap pack
1:06:18
obviously with the Emojis responding with Emojis I you know I use um a feature that almost no one knows about
1:06:25
if you hold the message and then click add a sticker you can reply with an emoji but most people it's like a magic
1:06:32
trick they don't know how you do it they don't know how you get an emoji attached to a message so I
1:06:37
feel uh you know lofty and skillful whenever I do that in a message I pride
1:06:44
myself on my ability to answer a message in a creative way it's something that I do you know it's not a big no big whoop
1:06:49
as they say um me sending messages later also super useful because sometimes you
1:06:54
want to respond to someone when you finally get back to their text message pardon my Ser sometimes your
1:07:01
co-workers live in an inferior time zone three hours in the past and when you want to send a text in the first thing in the morning it's like oh well it's
1:07:08
only 3:30 a.m. for them I can't do that that'd be rude yeah and sometimes you need to send a text to your coworker but
1:07:14
like a grandma who goes to bed at 6 p.m. they're probably already in bed so then you're like should I send this text message because they might be sleeping
1:07:20
already even though they should clearly be awake but you want to be sensitive to their elderly needs you know what I'm
1:07:25
saying um and then there's the passwords app obviously we red discussed that one that was a big one in my book hey here's
1:07:32
here's one that we haven't discussed this is like one of the low the low lights is you'll be able to unlock doors
1:07:38
automatically as you approach them for those that support this feature so if you have a lock that supports homekit as
1:07:44
you approach it will just unlock for you which I'm sorry did they say that that's one of the features finally allowing
1:07:50
that to happen yeah they uh like every other they highlighted that in uh
1:07:56
in the Keynotes like you know when they show like a big old Montage of all the things you'll be able to do with the icons I think that was one of them and
1:08:04
then another one that I thought was pretty cool the new Apple watch widgets they're going to finally be allowing new
1:08:09
widgets to show you new insights on your Apple watch and I was like oh yeah that's actually pretty cool we haven't even touched on Apple watch out of all
1:08:16
the updates that they announced the ones for the Apple watch were kind of the least interesting to me uh I'm not
1:08:23
trying to track sounded kind of cool yeah I mean yeah I guess if you're into like tracking every minute detail of
1:08:30
your health and bodily functions then maybe that's something that would be useful to you y I mean it it is the same
1:08:38
old thing of like persistent persistent monitoring of your health right and saying hey you know you may not have
1:08:44
noticed this but your heart rate's been up for you know the last four minutes or not four minutes four days I don't know
1:08:51
and I know heart rate is maybe not a good one because I think you already get those with with the heart but I mean all these different things that they can
1:08:56
just crunch the data and say hey you're trending in this way perhaps you might want to you know change your lifestyle
1:09:03
or visit your doctor yeah I think that's I think that's great so there you go
1:09:08
that was my list um we made it through all of it we got 20 minutes left I can hardly believe it and I'm just I'm an I
1:09:16
guess I have I have one question for the for the two of you which betas have you installed or which do you plan on
1:09:23
installing zero I have installed zer betas I have to use the phone in my day-to-day life I can't do that to
1:09:29
myself again I don't have a burner phone to to run it on I can't risk it with a Mac because I got to do things like this
1:09:35
podcast and my iPad is not worthy my iPad is finally my f iPad has
1:09:44
finally timed out really not going to get the updates the great blue screen in
1:09:49
the sky huh it's very disappointing wow not that old yeah I'm might go I might
1:09:57
have to go get a new one I mean honestly like some of that stuff with the handwriting made it actually look like
1:10:03
I've never really owned an apple pencil and when I have borrowed my wives it's like oh what what is this chicken
1:10:08
scratch completely useless to me but I don't know man it seems like with the advances in the pencil and with this I
1:10:15
can't remember what the the new feature is called with the uh what's it called like jot text or text type or type type
1:10:24
scribble I I can't remember what they called it but it had some kind of word but anyway sorry I didn't mean to derail
1:10:31
that's fine I was just going to say I'll probably run iOS and iPad OS those are my two go-to cuz my iPad and my iPhone
1:10:37
are not Mission critical and my God you can do with your phone I well I'll definitely do it with my iPad I will
1:10:44
probably do it with my phone but I may wait until the second do they have a public beta out by the way is it already
1:10:49
out it'll be out in July they wait until a few revisions and they'll you know
1:10:55
yeah so that they iron out some of the bugs it's a pretty it's a pretty so I'll I'll say I'm on the iOS beta purely
1:11:02
because I have to to cover this stuff to make videos and all that I I wish I wasn't it's honestly my least favorite
1:11:08
part about my job but you know if that's my least favorite part about my job I have a pretty good job uh but so I just
1:11:14
have to deal with a barely functioning phone for three months it can be kind of annoying I mean stuff definitely breaks
1:11:19
and then that's why I don't do it on my Apple watch cuz then like the heart monitor all of a sudden stops working for a month it's like dude this is too
1:11:25
annoying I can't deal with this the worst part about the Apple watch one is that installing Apple watch software
1:11:31
updates is incredibly annoying like you have to do it overnight it has to be plugged in it has to be over a
1:11:36
particular charge level it's like the moon has to be in the right phase like and you have to do that every two weeks
1:11:43
when there's a new beta like that's a pain in the ass and like there there's not enough in watchos this year to make
1:11:48
me convinced to do that but yeah yeah so I'm on iOS I'll I'm on Vision I
1:11:53
installed Vision OS I haven't played around with it yet I'm going to at least wait for the public beta to do the Mac
1:11:58
OS one but another point is that I probably have to try the Mac OS beta because my Mac is the only product I
1:12:06
have that can run Apple intelligence my phone is too old because I didn't buy a phone last year so wow too late now too
1:12:13
it's like well you know can you imagine if you bought an iPhone 15 and you're left out in the cold yeah like Ed Ed
1:12:20
Hardy bought an iPhone 15 plus he can't use any of these God man that I mean you
1:12:25
know brilliant motivator for buying upgrades yeah it makes you wonder too
1:12:31
how many of them are limited because of marketing reasons and how many are limited because of technical reasons
1:12:36
yeah it really is technical reasons only the iPhone only the A7 Pro chip is
1:12:42
capable of it like it because it's just it's just so demanding all right well let's wrap this
1:12:48
up and move on to our prediction conclusions I got to know I just got to
1:12:55
no we were I was going through that key now and I was like ah like we definitely had a question for this and I can't
1:13:00
remember how I answered or how Lewis gut punch after gut punch I just don't know so I'm gonna send it over to
1:13:07
Griffin should I share are you gonna share it's on your website right Griffin yeah it's on the website I actually just noticed a problem with my with the the
1:13:14
dark mode of my website it's just it's just a text color I pushed that fix while we were vamping and talking about
1:13:19
the betas but uh I will go through the results here can we're going to do one
1:13:25
by one okay uh sure yeah iOS gets free placement of home screen icons iPad OS
1:13:32
doesn't that is a point for Lewis and I because we we both correctly guessed
1:13:37
that it would be coming to both of the devices at the same time breaking the trend airon is at I'm gonna have to go
1:13:43
back and review the record on that I thought I voted yes but okay you did not new apis for colorful systemwide themes
1:13:51
surprisingly the new icons have no API with the at all it's just like a thing that you upload an xcode there's I don't
1:13:58
honestly honestly I thought that's what they were going to do so I don't know why I voted yes because I didn't think that was going to happen but here we are
1:14:05
the Heat of the competition mistakes were made we're all wrong there iPad OS gets
1:14:11
standby uh Lewis was the only one to be accurately pessimistic on
1:14:16
that new iPad OS power features exclusive to M series iPads holy cow
1:14:22
nothing we get nothing leis is gonna win with two points Vision
1:14:28
Pro unlocks and integrates with iPhone no we get nothing Well Lewis does he got a point
1:14:35
for that he gets a point for that I I mean us as users features us okay US Vision Pro users we got like you know
1:14:43
NE unbelievable that they didn't add add that although you know what maybe they did add it but they didn't talk about it
1:14:50
I wonder if that's a possibility it's I I went through the uh detail developer like um all right show
1:14:58
like what do you call it release notes in the developer app to confirm somebody did your due diligence okay all right
1:15:03
tvos gets more than 20 seconds of attention they somehow they came up with a feature and they talked about it dude
1:15:09
and they made time for it I am I am zero for six and LS is four for six this is GNA be a
1:15:16
sweep how how good are you feeling right now H there's still time still time to make my comeback baby yeah so after the
1:15:23
software section LS has four points I have one Point airon has zero points this is unbelievable going on to AI
1:15:28
features I'll stay in advance we did a little better with this section okay notification and conversation
1:15:35
summaries we all get a point there that was pretty obvious AI
1:15:42
feature I just love that Griffin owns a triangle could find it stole a triangle
1:15:49
from my brother oh my God he stole it new conversational voice assistant is no
1:15:56
longer called Siri this was some speculation in advance as we spoke about this didn't happen we all get a point
1:16:01
there I'm feeling very object object recognition and lookup from the camera
1:16:07
Wooh uh this wasn't rumored I don't know why I voted for it but airon gets a point Papa he's ahead object removal in
1:16:16
photos uh Aon and Lewis get a point here I voted against it because I thought you know maybe Apple would go along with
1:16:22
their philosophy that like a photo is a photo and it is a real depiction of the world but no you can just edit your photos cut out your X from a picture
1:16:30
that you have you know world's your oyster at least you can't generate brand new images that don't exist and that's a
1:16:36
clear line they drew but anyways that's a that's a point for the two uh co-hosts there image and video upscaling that
1:16:43
didn't happen that's a point for us all code completion and xcode another
1:16:49
great new feature we didn't have time to talk about that but like Swift assist I'm really excited to you know dig into
1:16:55
that and see if it can help me actually get my two apps into a shipping State point for us all son of a gun L is going
1:17:01
to win some features are limited to the iPhone 15 line another point for Lewis
1:17:10
there uh because how can we have said no to that oh wait wait wait sub features
1:17:16
are Fe are are to the iPhone 15 like the nonpr
1:17:22
well some features are limited to the new iPhones and that is the the spirit of the question yeah I don't remember
1:17:28
how we framed this question cuz this one seems obvious what I thought was going to happen is that there were the rumors
1:17:34
that there was going to be like the on device stuff and apple was going to be you know investing all into all of this
1:17:40
Cloud infrastructure and so I thought that if you have a lesser iPhone like an iPhone 14 or 13 that uh it would be
1:17:49
entirely cloud-based and none of it would run on device but no if you don't have the very latest Hardware you can't
1:17:55
use it at all and so God it seems so obvious in retrospect yeah yeah all
1:18:01
right most features available only with a subscription we all voted no surprisingly no features are locked
1:18:09
behind a subscription or pay wall of any kind as far as we can tell they're all available for free so you get I was
1:18:14
amazed by that yeah several headline features are
1:18:19
coming later when I wrote this pick I I I thought I should re WR it to be like
1:18:25
several headline features are coming next year but um because I I bet a lot of
1:18:31
these features aren't coming here until like 2025 with like iOS 18.4 or something like that but as written we
1:18:37
all voted for coming later and so we all get a point there okay we're running out of
1:18:45
space yeah miscellaneous Vision Pro is coming to more countries we all knew that was happening we all get a
1:18:51
point any other Hardware products are announced nope none none not none none
1:18:58
whatsoever Apple announces partnership with open AI this is the uh one thing that I get on I can't believe I said no
1:19:05
to this this was a tough one right we we we did talk about this one because you like you know they're G to be working
1:19:10
with them but you don't know if they want to give them credit yeah like they they name dropped open AI once yep and
1:19:18
it was basically just to explain chat DBT by open Ai and they brushed on into the rug and I was actually very surprised that in follow-up interviews
1:19:25
they explicitly state that they that they're going to tie in other partners in the wait a second wait a second so
1:19:31
shouldn't Lis and I have gotten this correct because we said yes and you said no but you gave yourself a point and you
1:19:39
gave us no points but they did announce a partnership because they they didn't announce a partnership they announced
1:19:44
like an open AI feature is integrated with it that's a part that's a partnership okay what I meant when I
1:19:51
wrote that is that like they would they would actually have like open AI like name on the screen and say we've partnered with open AI or like you know
1:19:58
we've integrated like deeply with open AI to bring this new feature and that that's not really what they did they brushed it under the rug and they've
1:20:03
explicitly and they even undercut it by saying that they plan on tying in with different providers yeah but they
1:20:09
announced that they partnering with chat GPT which is open ai's product I mean they effectively did announce a
1:20:16
partnership with open AI well the the the rumors very strongly indicated that there would be chat GPT features yeah
1:20:22
but they didn't but like you know I I was saying they're not going to they're going to
1:20:27
try and mention open AI as little as possible yeah well they did mention them as little as possible okay well we can
1:20:33
move on I well I'll Reserve this one if Griffin I can take the hit I think at this point but I disag Griffin and I end
1:20:38
up tied we're coming back to this okay I I will say it it doesn't affect the scor okay well it doesn't seem like doesn't
1:20:45
seem like it will okay let's keep it moving AI is said more than 40 times no
1:20:51
they said it as little as possible and by by the time they mentioned it they came up with their own term for it uh
1:20:57
that's a point for Aon the keynote runs over 1 hour and 48 minutes it was at
1:21:02
like an hour and 45 so uh airon and I get a point there and Le is trailing then we get
1:21:10
love you leis maos 15 is named Sequoia uh we came
1:21:16
up with a a variety of guesses that I think are we come up with some pretty good names they're pretty good I do
1:21:21
agree maybe they'll use them next year I'll probably reuse them even a place is there a place in California called seoa
1:21:27
California you know I it's like seoa national park I think what it is dude it's like is that even a place is there
1:21:34
a seoa county or no it's seoa National Park it's all that's the thing it's that's they they convention yeah
1:21:43
well I mean Big Sur is a place okay it's a you know I don't know they did not
1:21:52
it's like they always went by counties right I mean I don't know what they're who knows what was the other one like
1:21:57
half dome or something I can't remember what it was called I'm mildly nauseous scrolling
1:22:03
down to the winner is Section I don't even a look at this let's just you know what let's just go
1:22:10
ahead the winner is Lewis with 14 points trailed admittedly pretty closely by Aon
1:22:16
with 12 and me at 11 I'm actually surprised that it's that close because I thought Lewis was just sweeping it
1:22:24
uh with 17 points each listeners Ryan Peterson and Al won the audience score
1:22:33
unbelievable I hate losing to the audience but it happens time but why does it keep happening
1:22:38
Lou and I should explicitly mentioned that we're going to do an off topic at some point where I dive deep into more
1:22:44
statistics and interesting notes from the audience admissions we got a lot of audience submissions so I'm probably gon
1:22:49
to keep doing Google form it's a lot easier to submit a lot of people actually guessed seoa really kidding
1:22:56
yeah that is so both of those winners got the name correct and you know if you take Lewis's score of 14 add three
1:23:03
points to that if Lewis had correctly gotten seoa then he would have matched the audience scores why because that wild card
1:23:09
question is worth more yeah yeah oh I didn't know that I don't think you told us that I did it's it's in it's at the
1:23:15
top of the page the correct name is worth three points I didn't read this page three points will be awarded for a
1:23:22
correct wildcard guest he's got me dead to rights leis unless he just added that before we started
1:23:29
broadcasting okay good job Lewis oh thanks I'll give you your due
1:23:35
congratulations you son of a why does this keep happening I don't know leis doesn't even
1:23:41
read camac how does this keep happening it's it's clearly because uh you know
1:23:46
you laid out all your oh no wait we took care of that that crutch excuse you had
1:23:52
yeah yeah yeah this all real time pretend like you weren't wearing like some kind of
1:23:57
earpiece like you on a debate stage waiting for the answers to come in you had a whole team of people feeding you
1:24:02
this stuff I mean come on like I know you you got an angle I'm not sure what your angle is leis but I'm going to
1:24:07
figure it out you could be sure of that I think I fig I think he was listening to your microphone and he could hear if
1:24:14
you were typing three letters or two letters you could type whether you're typing yes next time I'm gonna mute my
1:24:19
mic while I type my answers Lewis that's period yeah man obviously I wanted to
1:24:27
you know follow your answers I know I know that's what you wanted to do but
1:24:33
couldn't do it I mean maybe that's why he ended up ahead it's like he couldn't quite figure it out so he was just guessing and you just landed on the
1:24:38
right answers I think that might be what happened anyway that's it that's all the codcast
