this is Apple's campus and this building
0:02
here is infinite loop to the entire
0:05
ground floor is home to Apple celebrated
0:07
industrial design studio very few people
0:09
have been aside even some of Apple's own
0:11
executives are forbidden from going in
0:13
there it's so secretive the designers
0:15
call it the studio behind the iron
0:16
curtain I'm going to take you on a tour
0:18
this is a map of the studio
0:20
showing the basic layout it's based on a
0:22
sketch from one of the designers who
0:23
worked there for nearly a decade
0:25
we also dug up the blueprints for the
0:26
building and use it to make the floor
0:28
plan let's go take a look here's the
0:31
front door it's a big heavy door it
0:32
opens onto an entryway line with
0:34
stainless steel this is the presentation
0:37
space it's dominated by some large
0:39
wooden project tables which are used to
0:41
present prototype products to executives
0:43
this is where Steve Jobs gravitated when
0:45
he visited the studio which is almost
0:46
daily when he wasn't traveling the
0:48
presentation tables look just like the
0:49
live tables in Apple's retail stores and
0:51
this is in fact where they got the idea
0:53
each table is dedicated to a different
0:55
project there's one format books and
0:57
other for the iPad the iPhone and so on
0:58
they used to display models and
1:00
prototypes or whatever Johnny wanted to
1:01
show jobs and the other executives the
1:04
models are covered at all times with a
1:05
black cloth to stop anyone from getting
1:06
a peek let's walk over to the left here
1:08
this is the kitchen the heart of the
1:11
studio it's well equipped there's lots
1:13
of food and snacks and there's a
1:14
high-end espresso machine that the
1:15
designers use to make coffee all day
1:17
long it's dominated by a big wooden
1:19
table this is where the designers gather
1:21
at least twice a week for marathon
1:22
brainstorming sessions all the designers
1:24
must be present unless they're traveling
1:26
no exceptions including Johnny the brain
1:28
storms are where they hash out whatever
1:29
the team is working on sometimes it's a
1:31
model presentation or a discussion about
1:33
new iPhone colors the brain storms are
1:35
the key to how they work it's their way
1:37
of getting a mind meld of being creative
1:39
and sorting out tough problems there's
1:41
always a lot of sketching going on
1:42
outside the kitchen is designers
1:44
workspace there are about 20 designers
1:46
at work here although the team has been
1:48
hiring recently so there's probably
1:49
several more they work at 5:00 on tables
1:51
with Lowe dividers the space is lined
1:53
along the wall with a large frosted
1:54
windows there's no way to look inside it
1:57
looks empty here but it's pretty chaotic
1:58
there's stuff everywhere high in bikes
2:00
kayaks basketball hoops there's boxes
2:02
and samples and materials it's loud and
2:04
energetic there's always music playing
2:06
and designers playing soccer or goofing
2:07
about in skateboards let's take a walk
2:10
over to see Johnny Ives office
2:12
this is Johnny's office it's the only
2:15
private office in the space but it's not
2:17
that private it's a glass cube it looks
2:19
just like the glass of the Apple stores
2:20
there's big plates of thick glass held
2:22
together by steel fixtures it measures
2:24
about 12 feet by 12 feet
2:26
it's almost bare there are no pictures
2:27
of his family or Design Awards there's
2:29
only a desk a chair and a lamp but
2:32
that's his custom made by his friend
2:33
Mike Newsome his leather chair is a
2:35
supported chair from the UK it's one of
2:37
his favorite designs this is usually
2:39
back except with 17-inch MacBook and
2:41
several colored pencils for drawing he
2:43
doesn't use an external month or any
2:44
other peripheral equipment next to
2:46
Johnny's office is a large computer
2:47
assisted design room this is another
2:50
glass lined space the CAD room is home
2:52
to about 15 K designers or surfacing
2:55
guys the surface guys make 3d computer
2:57
models the light has always kept love
2:59
they literally sit in the dark when the
3:01
designs have a sketch they'll go in
3:02
there and get one of the surfacing guys
3:04
to turn it into a 3d model the software
3:06
so sophisticated it can be used to build
3:07
photo realistic models of products and
3:09
the designers can play around with
3:11
different colors and lighting conditions
3:12
and features and configurations if the
3:14
designers want to see what it looks like
3:15
as a real object they send a CAD file to
3:18
the machine shop next door here at the
3:21
far end of the space is the machine shop
3:22
or the shop the shop is for also funded
3:25
by a glass wall and divided internally
3:26
into three rooms separated by more glass
3:28
walls this is where the designers make
3:31
models out of foam and other materials
3:32
to see what the 3d computer models look
3:34
like when they're made into real objects
3:36
the civil high-end computer-controlled
3:37
milling machines and drills and lathes
3:39
over to the right is a finishing room
3:41
where the models and photo types are
3:43
sanded and painted it contains a big
3:45
paint spraying booth about the size of a
3:46
car Jonny's team makes hundreds of
3:48
models they make models of everything
3:50
buttons the details of cases but as the
3:53
product development process progresses
3:54
they will outsource the model making to
3:56
a specialist outside firm when he was
3:58
alive Steve Jobs loved coming here
3:59
because he could see everything the
4:01
company did all the products and
4:02
whatever was coming up for the next
4:04
three years they never had PowerPoint
4:06
presentations they just walk around the
4:07
tables playing with the models and this
4:10
is a studio behind the Iron Curtain
