Connect 3 displays to any Mac with these new docking stations

Plugable expanded its product line with two new triple display USB-C docking stations. These can add three screens even to Macs that are ordinarily limited to one external monitor.

The UD-3900PDH and UD-768PDZ docks also feature additional ports, including USB-A, Ethernet and SD card readers.

More screens = more productivity

Studies have shown that a second display increases productivity. Which makes sense — a MacBook screen with four or more apps open at once is very crowded. And for some Mac users, just a single external screen isn’t enough.

But that sometimes presents a problem. Many people might be unaware that the MacBook Air models that use the Apple M1 or M2 processors only support one additional display. A Mac mini with either of these chips can have only two displays. (The Pro and Max versions of Apple’s chips support more.)

Fortunately, accessory makers make docks that include workarounds for the limitation. Plugable just introduced two of them with similar but different feature sets: the UD-3900PDH and the UD-768PDZ.

“The two new docking stations launched today are designed to simplify compatibility for productivity power users who want to turn their USB-C laptop into a triple display workstation,” says the accessory-maker.

The UD-3900PDH offers two HDMI ports that support displays up to 1920×1200 at 60Hz and a third HDMI display enabled by DisplayPort Alternate Mode at up to 4K 60Hz. A DisplayLink driver download is required for Macs (and Windows).

The dock also offers five additional USB-A ports, SD and microSD Card readers, a Gigabit Ethernet port and 3.5mm analog audio input/output jacks. A USB-C port that connects to the Mac provides up to 100W of charging.

The UD-3900PDH launched Tuesday for $169.99 with a $20 off coupon.
