Apple had a strong quarter for MacBook shipments, with a year-on-year increase of 11.3 percent to bring Apple’s total to 4.43 million units.

In total, Apple ranked fourth on Trendforce’s list of notebook makers, overtaking ASUS to come in behind HP, Lenovo and Dell.

Overall, Apple holds approximately 10 percent of the global market share, behind HP’s 23.4 percent, Lenovo’s 20.1 percent, and Dell’s 16.4 percent. Only HP saw more quarter-on-quarter growth than Apple for the three months.

The report doesn’t break down the shipments into Apple’s different models, although Trendforce analysts note that the MacBook Pro proved especially popular.

Taken as a whole, notebook shipments across all companies hit 42.69 million units in the quarter spanning July through September, increasing 6.8 percent versus the previous quarter, and a year-on-year increase of 0.9 percent. For an industry many people have predicted to be shrinking, with the rise of smartphones and tablets, those are pretty impressive numbers.

During Apple’s most recent earnings call, Tim Cook said that, “We had outstanding results all around the world in each of our geographic segments, growing Mac revenue by 20 percent or more. We were also very happy with the success of Mac in the education market, where customer purchases grew double digits year over year.”

Of course, it’s worth noting that shipments and sales don’t always line up exactly. While companies like Apple tend to be pretty good at predicting demand for products, there are plenty of other cases in which businesses fail to do this, and wind up shipping way more products than they actually sell.
