We’re now just hours away from Apple’s iPad 3 — or iPad HD — unveiling, which looks set to become the Cupertino company’s first iOS device to boast 1GB of RAM. Chronic, the iOS hacker behind the Chronic Dev Team, has confirmed that Apple’s third-generation tablet will get double the RAM of its predecessor.
Many expected the iPhone 4S to become the first iOS device to get 1GB of RAM, but it maintained the 512MB seen in the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2. Apple seems to have doubled that for the iPad 3, however.
Chronic reports that this news has been in plain sight since the beginning of February, when BGR first published some images of a debug report from Apple’s next iPad:
It’s been in plain sight since the beginning of February when BGR posted their exclusive photos of debug output from an iPad 3 development unit. The (full) last line says:
vm_page_bootstrap: 244276 free pages and 8396 wired pages
So, just do some simple math:
244,276 (pages) x 4,096 bytes (size of a page) = 1,000,554,496 bytes = 1GB (rounded)
The image in question can be seen at the top of this post.
In addition to 1GB of RAM, the iPad 3 is expected to feature a faster processor, better cameras, 4G LTE connectivity, and, of course, that long-awaited Retina display. Who’s excited?
