Deja Vu: iPhone 5 Spotted in the Wild? [Rumor]

iPhone 5 prototype spotted

Hold on to your hats, because the iPhone 5 may have just been spotted in the wild, again. In classic fashion, an anonymous tipster has snagged a not-so-clear picture of what he claims to be Apple’s next iPhone.

Taken in San Francisco, this picture is of an alleged Apple employee on his way home from work. The tipster in question feels very strongly that the device in the employee’s hands is an iPhone 5, and he just may be right.

The tipster sent in this juicy finding to 9to5Mac:

“He caught what he said was likely an Apple employee hunched over the device on the way home from work in San Francisco earlier this week.  He told us he was able to get a very good look at the device but the pictures he snapped “didn’t do it justice”.

According to 9toMac, this could really be an iPhone 5 prototype. It does seem to match the purported case leaks from yesterday.

“We contacted the tipster by phone and checked his background.  We believe he saw a totally new Apple device, probably a prototype iPhone 5.  He contacted us because when he got home, he doubted what he saw was legitimate until he looked at the green cases we posted.  Then it all came together for him.  Our tipster has had an iPhone 3GS and currently has an iPhone 4.  He knows his iPhones and iPods and this was like nothing he’s ever seen.  He said it would fit perfectly into the case below.”

Described as being almost “EVO-like” in screen size, this alleged iPhone 5 looks to be thinner and and slightly larger than the current iPhone 4. With rounded edges and a tapered back, the device is definitely too thin to be an iPhone 3GS and too rounded to be the iPhone 4.

“Our tipster wasn’t able to see the front/home button and the man holding the device was covering the Apple logo for all but a brief moment when the above picture was snapped.  It seemed apparent that he was trying to hide what he had more than the average smartphone user.”

It’s important to take these rumors with a grain of salt, but the idea of another iPhone prototype spotted out in the wild is very exciting. It wasn’t that long ago when a similar iPhone prototype was found in a bar— we all remember how fun that was.

One thing is for sure, this iPhone looks way better than the other “prototype” we saw this morning.

Here’s to the iPhone 5!

maybe its an iPhone 3gs….. jesus

  • King Black Bomb

    fail. Looks like a 3GS

  • john4043

that iphone looks like it has an case on it

  • Cholton1

hmm i wish the image was more clear. I can see it’s thinner, but it still resembles a 3GS to me :/

  • Glen Graham

    It IS a 3gs. C’mon.

The web is getting pretty desperate.

  • Karras

Am I missing something? How was he able to judge the screen size if unable to see the front of the device? If he was extrapolating from the perceived size of the rear that he could see, this does not seem entirely convincing.

  • Conor Kelley

It’s important to take these rumors with a grain of *slat*

  • mma589

how is it a rumor when there is a picture to back it up? a rumor is a lie or could be the truth that someone said?

  • mma589

cult of mac is getting pretty desperate

  • hisamueltan

    Looks like a 3GS to me…

  • heeloliver

holy shit a blurry pic of a 3gs lets move on people

  • Glen Graham

Take it back. I take it all back.
Did some reading around and changed my mind. It might actually be the Iphone 5 and here’s why:

The volume rocker is necessary because of the flater design. The apple logo is lower than any previous Iphone AND the flash is UNDER the camera, not to the right of it. It may have a case that gives it the appearance of a 3GS just like the prototype Iphone 4 had in the bar.

The guy who snapped the picture said the screen was as big as the Evo.
    That’s enough evidence for me.

I found this new apple blog and it great!

  • Zulvianes Budiman

from here it looks like 3GS’s :|

    zzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz cough cough uh…. ughzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • bav14

I found this new apple blog and it great!

  • Ann Phan

“as big as an Evo”? Please no.

  • John Branham

right cuz if it looks huge from the back, there’s still the chance it has a tiny screen……..

  • Hampus

Well we can’t see the volume rocker nor the camera and it’s flash and the logo seem to be just where it usually is.
I mean, sure if you see an iPhone with the flash beneath the camera it must be a new model, but without a even half decent picture that shows anything to back you up, well…

  • Hampus

Because a picture that is that bad can’t be used to back anything up.
It’s impossible to confirm that it’s an iPhone 5 or any of the details given, as such it is still a rumour.

  • Karras

You may note that they were quite specific in their assessment of the screen size, comparing it to a particular HTC model. I am unsure how this can be established when only the rear of the device is visible. A statement to the effect of “if the back is anything to go by, the screen must be very big” or similar, fair enough. But to go into such detail based on clearly limited information strikes me as a wee bit silly. The mockups doing the round quite commonly show an edge to edge screen but, unless this has been established to be true, there is scope for bezel to reduce this somewhat.

And assuming it is genuinely larger than the normal 3GS and not wishful thinking, is it at least possible that it was in a case? Not saying it was. It may even be the genuine article for all I know.

  • Matthew Snider

Still happy with my iPhone 4. May wait to see what the 6 looks like.

  • Bogie635

It looks like a case designed to make the phone resemble a 3GS. Note the slot at top next to the power button and the recess for the mute/volume controls. It wouldn’t be the first time Apple has used a case in this way, to disguise a new model as an old one. The phone inside is probably thinner than an iPhone 4.

  • John Branham

okay I can deal with that :) haha, but I think it’s also fair to assume in that case, but yes, he may have gone into “detail” too much.

  • John Branham

for starters… it was 9 to 5 mac.

  • mai duc chung

The usual idea is that you would use NFC to set up the link between the two devices and then do an automatic hand over to a different protocol for doing the actual transfer of data – eg Bluetooth, iphone 5
