If you believe iPads are not just for keeping the offspring entertained during car trips, there are numbers to back that up.

Half of the top ten paid iPad apps are “productivity tools,” in other words, apps that grown-ups use for work.

According to Distimo, a start-up that analyzes app stats, the top two paid iPad apps in April are word processor Pages and Goodreader, a large-file PDF enabler.

Pinball HD is the only game in the top five paid apps at spot no. 3, followed by note taker app Penultimate and presentation app Keynote.  (You can download the full report here.)

The top free iPad apps also include work-friendly downloads such as iBooks (no. 1), Sundry Notes Pro (no. 6) and Calculator XL (no. 9).

This goes against the trend in the Apple App Store, where the majority of paid applications in the Top 100 Overall during the entire period of November 2009 – April 2010 fall into the Games and Entertainment categories, Distimo reported.

Top apps, paid and gratis, for iPhones on the other hand are dominated by games. Top paid iPhone apps are all games or entertainment, lead by Doodle Jump, while the top free apps include just one “productivity” app — the Opera Mini Web Browser.

It’ll be interesting to see if more adults start handing their iPads over to games (and maybe to the kids) as the device ages.
